As part of New Haven’s burgeoning experimental music scene, Stefan Christensen plays regularly with Headroom as well as members of Mountain Movers, Alexander and Nagual. His solo album The Upcoming Flame, on the Bruit Direct label, pays tribute to inspirations including Loren Connors and the New Zealand-based Xpressway label. But, as Bill Meyer points out, he doesn’t just reflect his influences, but rather “draws into his sources’ strengths and molds songs that are just as misshapen, stubborn, and undeniable. He plugs his jack into their ungrounded outlets and noises just as jagged and acrid smoke out of his amp.” Here he writes about ten of these “ungrounded outlets” and what they mean to him.

The first song by AG that really shocked my system years back now. This one never stops to amaze me.

Faust—“Flashback Caruso”

Killer song from the largely non-song oriented Tapes album.

Cat Stevens—“Here Comes My Baby”

I've loved this version of this song since I was a kid. It still makes me happy today.

Pearlean Gray & The Passengers—“I Don't Want To Cry”

Pearlean Gray is from Connecticut. I pulled this 45 at a local record store years ago and never stopped listening to it.

Mountain Movers—“My Eyes Are Always Heavy”

Had to sneak in my best friends. It would take many paragraphs to explain why I love this song so much. “The sleeping pill worked and now I'm always sleeping” is the best lyric.

Tori Kudo—“Sings Jutok Keneko”

I couldn't find what I was looking for online (Tori/Jutok collaboration) so this will have to do. This ones pretty darn special too though.

Tommy Jay—“I Was There”

I've had the good fortune to become friends with Tommy the last few years, after many years of being enthralled by his work. This was the first song of his that really blew me away.

Hamad Kalkaba & The Golden Sounds—“Lamido”

Totally unstoppable track. This gets a lot of play at home, in the car, whenever, wherever.

Jim Shepard—“One Percent Of Nothing”

The recent ever/never 3xLP has this massive personal hero at the front of my mind again. This obscure one goes in line with that record's theme and has long been a favorite.

Crystalized Movements—“Hall Archer”

Released on a 7" comp by my good friend Joe in 1990. Insane and underappreciated track from CT's #1 export.

HAMAD KALKABA『HAMAD KALKABA & THE GOLDEN SOUNDS 1974-1975』

　どうしたらこんな音が出るのか。音楽とは音質である、といわんばかりだが、まさにそうかもしれない。時代から国、暮らす地域その周辺まで、聴き進めるにつれイメージがどんどん遷移される。ここではカメルーンであり、時代は70年代。その中盤に活動していた歌手のハマッド・カルカバが残した3枚のEPで構成された本作。つまりベストでもアンソロジーでもなく、“彼のすべて”というのがポイントだろう。現代に再評価されるべくしてされた、その肉厚な音質が時代を超越してたくましく鳴り響く。アナログ・アフリカが先行リリースしたコンピ『ポップ・マコッサ』の続編といえるものだが、マカッシ～ズーク寄りだったそれに対し、より粗削りなガンジャル（国内北部の舞踊音楽）をベースに、フェラからの影響だろうブラス・アンサンブルとの対比によるファンクネスがたまらない。いや、個人的にはフェラ以上にツボだったが。text by 若杉 実 (月刊ラティーナ2018年1月号掲載)
