The kiddos drove off 15 mins ago and it's so quiet. We had a nice weekend. They were supposed to leave "Cheeto" aka Rosie our 22 month old granddaughter with us while they attended a "My Morning Jacket" concert in Atlanta. Except the concert got Covid cancelled Wed so they drove up Friday evening and spent the weekend with us.
We grilled strip steaks Friday night. Yesterday, we did a mini-brewery tour in Louisville. Starting at Atrium, because they open at 11:00 and have an excellent outside space for the rugrat to roam. We enjoyed an excellent Belgian blonde ale there and my daughter particularly liked a blueberry lemon sour. From there we walked down the street to the Idlewild Butterfly Farm. I took away six ounces of filleted Monarch and and six ounces of ground Tiger Swallow. Kidding! What kind of monster eats butterflies...or lambs or calves...lol
Out next stop, Logan St market, was across the street and is an eclectic bizarre but maybe not always so diverse. We sat down at Wild Hops and ordered the wet hopped Pilsner and a shot of a Bombergers. The Pils was good enough to take away, the whiskey was different enough to make me consider buying a bottle but after noticing it's distilled and bottle in Kentucky, nevermind. Bombergers is historically/properly a Pennsylvania whiskey and that's where it should be made. A couple of NY lawyers bought the name so...
Lunch was at the ever delicious Eagle where we ate a bird and half slathered in spicy honey and quite a few fixins. From there the girls went off to find material to make Rosie a turtle for Halloween while the SIL and I walked down to the little known and infamous "Back Door for a beer."
On an early Saturday afternoon it was mostly regulars. I asked how long they'd been coming and the answers ranged from 10 - 30 years. They were friendly but not especially interesting. After one beer we walked a half block to the Gralehaus which to our dismay wouldn't open until 5. Nevermind, two blocks further was the newly opened Hi-Wire Brewing.
It was wide open and energetic with people and dogs. When we sat down at the bar, it was just past 3:00. Our bartender, Alex mostly stayed in front of us and talked. She was originally from California but had lived in Louisville for the last five years. She currently also worked as an assistant brewer for 3rd Turn and had previously worked for Akasha who wanted her back. I had a real funky beer I liked enough to take home in my growler. The girls showed up after two beers to collect us.
Our last stop was West Sixth in Nulu Market Place. We had a newly brewed and mostly unremarkable ESB there and headed home. We picked up a pizza at a local shop near home. I doctored a slice with hot pepper flakes then mostly napped until time for bed. Old folks.
This afternoon at lunch, I opened that growler of funky beer and poured myself a glass. To my surprise a largish winged insect floated in my glass. This was noticed by my SIL and daughter. Yes, of course I'll drink it, I'll just remove the beerfly. No way to know when that got in there. I wash my growler fastidious but it may have got in while it was drying. A second winged intruder appeared in my next pour. The kids wondered could it have been in the keg? Yes, bugs love beer but for them it's often a fatal attraction.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN 🎃
"I can't go through the Haunted Wood, Marilla," cried Anne desperately.
Marilla stared.
"The Haunted Wood! Are you crazy? What under the canopy is the Haunted Wood?"
"The spruce wood over the brook," said Anne in a whisper.
"Fiddlesticks! There is no such thing as a haunted wood anywhere. Who has been telling you such stuff?"
"Nobody," confessed Anne. "Diana and I just imagined the wood was haunted. All the places around here are so--so--commonplace. We just got this up for our own amusement. We began it in April. A haunted wood is so very romantic, Marilla. We chose the spruce grove because it's so gloomy. Oh, we have imagined the most harrowing things. There's a white lady walks along the brook just about this time of the night and wrings her hands and utters wailing cries. She appears when there is to be a death in the family. And the ghost of a little murdered child haunts the corner up by Idlewild; it creeps up behind you and lays its cold fingers on your hand--so. Oh, Marilla, it gives me a shudder to think of it. And there's a headless man stalks up and down the path and skeletons glower at you between the boughs. Oh, Marilla, I wouldn't go through the Haunted Wood after dark now for anything. I'd be sure that white things would reach out from behind the trees and grab me."
"Did ever anyone hear the like!" ejaculated Marilla, who had listened in dumb amazement. "Anne Shirley, do you mean to tell me you believe all that wicked nonsense of your own imagination?"
"Not believe exactly," faltered Anne. "At least, I don't believe it in daylight. But after dark, Marilla, it's different. That is when ghosts walk."
"There are no such things as ghosts, Anne."
"Oh, but there are, Marilla," cried Anne eagerly. "I know people who have seen them. And they are respectable people. Charlie Sloane says that his grandmother saw his grandfather driving home the cows one night after he'd been buried for a year. You know Charlie Sloane's grandmother wouldn't tell a story for anything. She's a very religious woman. And Mrs. Thomas's father was pursued home one night by a lamb of fire with its head cut off hanging by a strip of skin. He said he knew it was the spirit of his brother and that it was a warning he would die within nine days. He didn't, but he died two years after, so you see it was really true. And Ruby Gillis says--"
"Anne Shirley," interrupted Marilla firmly, "I never want to hear you talking in this fashion again. I've had my doubts about that imagination of yours right along, and if this is going to be the outcome of it, I won't countenance any such doings. You'll go right over to Barry's, and you'll go through that spruce grove, just for a lesson and a warning to you. And never let me hear a word out of your head about haunted woods again."
Anne might plead and cry as she liked--and did, for her terror was very real. Her imagination had run away with her and she held the spruce grove in mortal dread after nightfall. But Marilla was inexorable. She marched the shrinking ghostseer down to the spring and ordered her to proceed straightaway over the bridge and into the dusky retreats of wailing ladies and headless specters beyond.
"Oh, Marilla, how can you be so cruel?" sobbed Anne. "What would you feel like if a white thing did snatch me up and carry me off?" Anne of Green Gables - A Good Imagination Gone Wrong - Chapter XX

Confessions from a former Idlewild and Soakzone employee
#2: I used to work the hay maze during halloboo (Idlewild's Halloween weekends) it was the worst experience I had working there. I Had to be a babysitter and I was not allowed to scare anyone (but I did do it from time to time due to sheer boredom) the problem with Idlewild is that they don't allow us to use smartphones when I clearly needed it. Also they had a soundtrak of kids bop Halloween songs that would loop so it would drive you up a wall. I liked silence a lot more but apparently the managers loved that soundtrak because I had to listen to it three years straight. However nothing could compare to the last day I worked there we were outside instead of in a pavillion area. The hay had mold all over it... Which is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I even took pictures which I still have on my phone. I complained to my manager about this and this is what he said
"we spray the mold with a chemical so it won't hurt anyone..."
Afterwards I never went back to that amusement park after that incident...

A small Riverside amusement park whose innovative founder designed early Knott’s Berry Farm rides and befriended Walt Disney a decade before Disneyland debuted will soon be filled again with the joyous sights, smells and sounds of summer.
Castle Park will reopen on Friday, April 9 after being closed for more than a year by state COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
“We have shown Castle Park can offer a fun, clean and safe environment for our guests to enjoy an outdoor family outing or socially distanced get-together,” Castle Park general manager Ken Withers said in a statement. “We cannot wait to offer the full Castle Park experience very soon.”

California theme parks can reopen at 15% attendance capacity in the red/substantial tier 2, 25% capacity in the orange/moderate tier 3 and 35% capacity in the least-restrictive yellow/minimal tier 4 of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Riverside County — home to Castle Park — has reached the orange tier.
Online advanced reservations will be required for single-day tickets and passholders. No walk-up tickets will be sold at Castle Park due to state guidelines.
Castle Park has brought back more than 100 employees ahead of the reopening with plans to hire an additional 100 in the coming weeks.

Leading up to the reopening, several Castle Park buildings and attraction queues were repainted, rides underwent annual refurbishments and additional seating was added for outdoor dining. Two attractions — the Little Dipper coaster and Motorcycle kiddie ride — have been retired. The Buccaneer Cove water play structure will reopen at a later date.
The 30-acre amusement park’s 27 rides include classics such as the Spider, Scrambler, Tilt-a-Whirl and Kings Crown wave swings. Among the rarer rides are a Gravitron centrifugal force flying saucer, a Ring of Fire super looper thrill ride, the dragon-themed flying scooters and a children’s whip turntable ride. The park’s coaster lineup includes the Screamin’ Demon and Merlin’s Revenge. Castle Park’s Antique Car Ride used to operate at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park.
The queue for the park’s lone dark ride — the shoot-em-up Ghost Blasters — has been moved outdoors to accommodate state guidelines. All attractions will seat riders six feet apart to promote social distancing. Riders from the same family or party may ride together.
SEE ALSO: Thousands turn out as Six Flags Magic Mountain reopens after yearlong pandemic closure
Castle Park was founded in 1976 by Bud Hurlbut, a Southern California theme park pioneer who designed several early rides at Knott’s Berry Farm and used his Riverside park as a proving ground for new attractions.
Hurlbut began designing custom miniature trains in 1943 and opened the Hurlbut Amusement Company a few years later in Santa Ana.
Hurlbut’s first attractions in 1945 were at Crawford’s Kiddieland in El Monte — which featured a Ferris wheel, boat ride and miniature train. Hurlbut struck up a conversation one day with a regular Kiddieland visitor named Walt Disney — who became a friend and would go on to open Disneyland a decade later.
In 1955, Hurlbut partnered with Walter Knott on a gentleman’s handshake and began operating an 1896 Dentzel carousel at what would eventually become Knott’s Berry Farm theme park. Hurlbut went on to design the 1960 Calico Mine Ride and 1969 Timber Mountain Log Ride at Knott’s.
SEE ALSO: Which Disneyland and DCA rides will be open — and closed — when the parks return
During Halloween 1973, Hurlbut donned a gorilla suit to scare riders on the Calico Mine Train, helping give birth to Knott’s Scary Farm. Hurlbut brought the haunted event concept to Castle Park, which hosted its first annual Halloween Surprise Party in 1977.
Riverside would have had a 65-foot-tall replica of the Statue of Liberty along the 91 Freeway in 1982 if Hurlbut had gotten his way — but the city denied a proposal that would have transformed Castle Park into Liberty Park.
Hurlbut sold his interests in Knott’s in 1984 and threw himself into Castle Park. During the 1980s, the Riverside park added a merry-go-round, bumper cars, Scrambler, Tilt-A-Whirl, Whip, wave swings, log flume ride, swinging ship and the former Knott’s antique car ride.
In 1999, with Hurlbut in his 80s, Castle Park was sold and the park’s founder was honored for his lifetime of service to the theme park industry by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Hurlbut died in 2011 at the age of 92.

With the reopening of the Riverside park, Castle Park will extend all annual passes for the number of operating dates missed during the pandemic closure. Castle Park’s new $150 Platinum Annual Pass for 2021 also offers admission to Raging Waters water park in San Dimas as well as sister parks Kennywood (Pennsylvania), Idlewild (Pennsylvania) and Lake Compounce (Connecticut) — if you’re planning a theme park road trip later in the year.
Castle Park will follow the now-familiar “new normal” of COVID-19 health and safety protocols with limited capacity, required masks, temperature screenings, social distancing, enhanced sanitization and cashless payments. Hand sanitizing stations and signs reminding visitors of COVID-19 safety measures have been added throughout the park.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN and happy 20th anniversary to Outkast’s “Stankonia” LP. This is their best, in my opinion. Although they never released a bad one until their last one “Idlewild”. I miss them. I wish their label would just set them free or fucking PAY THEM! @vinylmeplease just released a sweet pressing of this one, but this is the @recordstoredayus pressing from a couple years ago. [Now that I finally have all three books in front of me, I can finally prove I’m not crazy about Halloween’s natural hair color changing between the first book and the rest:
“In real life, it’s a little different, right? So much for my orange hair.” -Idlewild, page 178
“[...] clean-shaven with natural orange hair and charcoal eyes.” -Edenborn, page 198
“But there’s something about you specifically, if you don’t mind my saying. The bright orange hair, maybe.” “Never trust a redhead.” -Everfree, page 16  (and later: “Deuce and I shared the same DNA [...] Amidst all the screaming and running, a flash of orange hair.” page 110

Welcome back to Catie talks shit (this time it truly is shit...)
Hey fellow Latrobe peeps you want your childhood ruined by shady business practices then you are in the right place people... cause Idlewild the children’s amusement park that you used to go to is actually hell! I know cause I worked there for 4 years... (I don’t want to go back but my parents are wanting me to go... fuck those guys...) anyways but working at idlewild is pretty much everyone’s first job if you live in Latrobe and what a job it is...
The most shady of practices was letting 14 year olds go into work for an even lesser pay.... it sucked... especially if you were working food... never again let me tell you working at foods especially the cyclone was the worst... if you were unlucky you would have to go into the hell box (Dip n dots) and it was not fun... you lost your mind and back posture in that booth with no freedom...
Later on they eventually realized I could never stand in one place and put me into the sweeper position... I love it, I can move around and I don’t have to be in one place but you have to clean up melted ice cream and vomit... worst part of it all was the Halloween event. I had to run the hay maze which is not so bad when you are inside but outside oh my god... the hay maze was moldy and was in a dangerous spot also the worst part of the hay maze was... you had to listen to the same damn soundtrack on loop until your break or until your shift was over...
I think majority of you know about the whole incident where I kid was injured on one of the roller coasters. Well... it was probably more on the line of the employee’s fault. They should have known better then to put to kids in the same car together... Also Idlewild’s managers are either careless or relentless.. they can either be the nicest people you have worked with or... satan in disguise... and the employees get along pretty well as they all have common interest in getting the fuck out of the park... or they are complete assholes... and when you are done they pop up at your school...
But the worst part about Idlewild for me is everyone’s privileged children... I hate how many children will not listen to the employees or will do things (like drop funnel cakes in front of a sweeper and watch as they clean it up...) and the adults are not innocent either... there some adults who swear at their children in the park... I once saw a guy get arrested for bringing in alcohol... to the park... it’s bad when the adults are worse than the children...
Also I don’t control the rides and I don’t want people to ask when the rides are going to be open cause IDK! I don’t control the rides... the ride operators control the rides and i’m just there to pick up trash... so to all of you who think it’s okay to boss around a bunch of kids to meet every one of your commands better listen up cause I ain’t doing shit if you have not earned the respect.
#respect the employee
