Chapter 1:

Religious people often talk about critical situations being the work of God or the Devil. I’m not a religious man, but as I sit in this moment, I have these same thoughts. How on earth did I get here? How on Earth am I going to move forward from this?

I shake my head and grin as I grab four files and toss them across the desk toward her.

“What do we have?” she asks, immediately transforming into Special Agent mode, flipping through the top case file.

“Four deaths, spread across the Pacific Northwest. All women—various ages—all died of heart attacks unexpectedly without pre-existing conditions.”

“Hmm,” she says as she flips through the file. She is both meticulous and swift when processing information, a true pinnacle of efficiency. “Mulder heart attacks are unfortunately quite common in women.”

I throw another pencil at the ceiling as I wait for her to catch the common link, the countdown playing in my brain… three, two…one —

“Wait,” she demands. “The heart attacks all occurred during the act of sexual intercourse?”

“Yep.”

“Well, that is rather odd. But, still, about one-tenth of one percent of people die during consensual sex,” I notice her cheeks blushing now, her gaze dropping, and her hands fidgeting. Her body shows signs of nervousness as she talks to me about this, but her words are one hundred percent Dana Scully, MD. “Sex can be very strenuous.”

I chuckle, leaning back in my chair and propping my feet on the desk. “Dr. Scully, how many of those one-tenth of one percent of people dying during sex would be women with no pre-existing cardiac conditions?”

“Well,” she stalls. “I agree. It is an anomaly.”

“The computer picked it up,” I say, grabbing the files back from where she’d laid them down.

“Computer?” she asks.

“You know, the new TI-6969 the boys have down in the lab with the profiling algorithm. It looks for connections in seemingly unconnected cases. And it hit on this.”

She rolls her eyes and scoffs. Oh, how I love bantering with this woman.

“So I’m assuming we are heading to the Pacific Northwest, Mulder?”

“Plane leaves at eleven.”

been thinking about your thoughts on book lovers since ur blog became emily henry discourse night. i’m someone that likes emily henry books but i think the issue is the stories she’s telling are like litfic or women’s fiction stories but then she has to like fit them into a romance novel. so like book lovers is this really tender story about the like trauma of grief and having to raise your younger sibling and like shaping your life and career around that to the point of unhappiness, even years after that shaping became unnecessary, shoved into this little teehee premise of like wouldn’t it be so silly if the heartless big city other woman from the hallmark movie got a small town romance teehee. and i’m not opposed to a romantic subplot OR a flat out romance novel but in book lovers the romance unfolds in these weird almost gimmicky ways around the heart of the story which is the sisters. so then it becomes like hey why are you here. about the romance. in the romance novel. anyway sorry about this i just couldn’t get it out of my head or figure out how to articulate my thoughts about it until now. all love<3

i agree! in both of the books i’ve read of hers (book lovers and happy place) i think she has very compelling main characters. (in happy place i felt genuinely moved by the main characters pov and her problems with her parents. and in book lovers i really had high hopes for the way her character was described before the execution killed it) BUT then the romance doesn’t have the same draw. and isn’t incorporated into the book in a way for the connection OR the tension to land. (happy place was a bit better than book lovers tho) if it was chic lit or the romance was a subplot it would be different. but the issue with emily henry is her books ARE romance novels at the end of the day. so when the romance falls flat…the parts that are admittedly done well can’t really make up for that. -for me at least!

also i think another thing is her main characters are very interesting but No other character truly is. including the love interest. which is what truly hurts any sort of connection. like i have read and watched sooooo much mediocre NONSENSE (i’m self aware) that i have a drive to want better for bc the interpersonal relationships in them just /slap that Hard/. but in emily henry’s books that concept is nonexistent. every relationship you see play out on screen, including the friendships (looking at happy place) do not pack a punch. at all. they never have me on the edge of my seat hoping for a resolution or happily ever after or whatever

which is why these books don’t even make me mad when they’re not good. bc i don’t Care about any relationship to be like i wish this was better </3 they deserved more </33. i’m just perplexed by why these books keep getting lauded as the pinnacle of contemporary romance. when they are Nothing of the sort

Well i've talked about him a fair bit on my Pahkitew Posts, so i'll just repeat it here:

Dave's a really pathetic excuse of a teenage boy and i love him for it. He is soooo convinced he's completely normal and everyone else is 'so weird' when he's the guy who got a panic attack after getting grease on his hands. I also like how he's a huge hopeless romantic. The pinnacle of romance for this dude is hallmark movies and romantic comedies for sure. I also think him being a little bitch is fun to explore but not executed the best in the show? It's been a hot minute since i watched the first few episodes, bear with me. I like how badly he takes being rejected in Hurl and Go Seek, he acts like he just got divorced after ten years of mariage it's pathetic and sad and funny to watch... And should've been executed better imo. Would've been funnier if he tried really hard to sabotage Sky in any way but failed miserably imo. Make him pathetic-er.

I've also already discussed Skave and my opinion on it so i'll elaborate again: love that it's doomed and that you can tell exactly why it's doomed from the start; it's their inability to communicate what they want out of this to the other. It's not even just the fact Dave refuses to listen to Sky's but (and it is a huge problem) no. They're both running on romance expectations that they want to have or reach, but they never really tell the other about them or really seem to care for the other as a person - Sky just thinks Dave's generically nice and with how introverted Sky is you cannot tell me Dave fell for her because of her personality - which makes the moment when Sky rejects Dave in Hurl and go Seek that much better. Shawn's like, the opposite of Dave in so many different ways, but they're still friends and try to help eachother out in the romance department which backfires horribly because they are both teenage boys who fucking suck at it. I like their dynamic :D

Cue a cheesy, cute fall in love scenario between Steve & Y/N, those two simply being pulled towards one another. Sparks fly and they let their feelings guide them.

Following a beautiful kiss as the pinnacle of that love story comes the bad awakening the next morning. Strange people arrive and take Y/N & Natasha with them. Yelena who was able to stay hidden then has to bear the bad news:

They aren't just random girls fleeing out of the neighboring country. Y/N is the heir aparrent to the thrown, set to find a suitable match and elope at the end of the week when their country holds is annual christmas ball; Natasha the crownprincess and second in line.

Steve deeply in love and not willing to let his girl go that easily ropes his friends and Yelena into an elaborate plan to sneek into the ball and reunite with the woman he fell in love. But there is a twist.

At the day of the ball the crownroom is filled with potential suitors. One after another stepping forward to introduce themselves and woo the heir aparrent.

It is when Lord Rumlow from one of the provinces of the Hydra kingdom is about to introduce himself when the royal horns toll and an attendant announces nervously:

A murmur goes through the crowd as guards sprint to push between the King of the enemy Kingdom and the princesses.

WITCH ON THE HOLY NIGHT

now this is peak. the most gorgeous tm work by far i have to say its simply an incredible read all around. even tsukire did not look or work or sound as good as mahoyo did even tho it came out almost ten(?) years after

on the story front i loved it too with a special shoutout to soujuuro being one of my favorite characters in TM (i say this often not my fault type moon keeps releasing bangers)

however mahoyo has two issues for me:

the story is clearly incomplete: i dont mean its just nonsense or whatever but when nasu said its the first of a trilogy you can just feel that in the story with alot of things being left in the air. this wouldnt be an issue really if mahoyo 2 wasnt basically dead....

i didnt vibe with the slice of life scenes as much as i usually do in nasu works: this isnt a flaw in the story more so i just didnt like em idk how else to word that

mahoyo is a great read however and i highly highly recommend you read it or else

the vn is split into two with a near side and far side.

while the near side is really good with arcueid and ciels route (ignore how ciel was actually really fucked over even in her own route its laughable and my girl deserved better) the far side is so much more better and really is where the soul of tsukihime and shiki the main character lies

FSN is simply tms best work all around. while i prefer tsuki over it and find the tsuki side of TM more interesting FSN overall is much stronger on most fronts but especially its main characters

this is how you do it folks. the story was elevated on nearly every level and if it was the complete story id say its the best ever in existence ever forever fr. its just that good.

there are three things i really want to point out:

while maybe goin overboard i really liked the buffs all the characters received and in general the whole worldbuilding is so much better now with idea bloods and principles and vampire hierarchies and arcueid inflation scenes (heh) its just epic

ciel got a so much better route that actually feels like a ciel route and not just arcueid route 2 electric bugaloo (and getting fucking cucked)

noel is peak

this is peak type moon and when red garden comes out it will be even BETTER especially with satsuki route because satsuki deserves it

there are some other short stories i havent mentioned like garden of avalon, notes, MAGNITUNING (look it up you wont regret it) its all great and worth the time of reading

RP Starter: Project Hallmark

Project Hallmark. It's the cheesy nickname you've given to circumstances that have led to this--December 20-23 at a local hotel.

I step into the lobby and take it all in. I can count on the fingers of one hand, with fingers to spare, how many times I've actually stayed in a hotel in my lifetime. My family wasn't big on travel, and even when we did travel, there'd usually be a family member or friend at the destination willing to let us crash under their roof. Carpet, sheets laid over linoleum or tile, and nests made of winter jackets were what I got used to. It's 'cuz of this upbringing that I see hotels, no matter how grand, as some pinnacle of luxury. Even now, in my late-twenties with enough funds to afford a couple of nights at a hotel, I've never been able to justify blowing half a month's rent on two nights at a hotel.

There's a coffee shop to my left across the lobby and the scents coming from it are divine. My stomach rumbles and I gently rub at it over my felt coat. I debate whether or not to stop for a hot Mocha and maybe some pastry with chocolate in it.

Juggling three jobs has resulted in 'meals' becoming a pipe dream. Odds are, I grab something quick just to keep me on my feet. Most of the time, that's a simple breakfast sandwich--an egg and maybe a piece of bacon shoved into an English muffin or bun about the size of my palm. It's not much, but it's affordable and convenient enough to eat while on-the-go--rushing to catch a bus or while getting my uniform on for the food-job. My current jobs are at a fast-food restaurant (aka food job), a glorified intern around 4 days a week for a community service association (aka 'Office job'), and an unofficial side-gig doing crafting stuff for friends and acquaintances. Due to my hectic schedule and the crafting gig taking every moment not spent at either of my official jobs or in transit we keep missing each other. During the rare hours we're home together, I'm either super concentrated on some craft, or I'm asleep at my sewing machine. The lack of significant couple-time led to you working on Project Hallmark--basically, a romantic get-away. Hotel, good food, and spending intentional time together.

My stomach grumbles, reminding me that the last thing I ate was a fried egg on a piece of bread that I had put together around midnight the night before, having found my growling tummy too uncomfortable to allow me to sleep. It's currently just passed 5PM of the next day and I left the office after a day of giving impromptu presentations and getting projects and planning sorted out and down for approvals in the new year. A fussy sponsor for a project our office is spearheading decided to show up and act like a big shot and I spent 4 hours listening to him shout irrelevant buzz words and basically trying to suggest 15 other initiatives we should have been working on rather than the singular initiative we've been funded for. All in all, a frustrating and annoying day. I got out of the office just in time to make a mad dash for the bus that was fast-approaching, only to receive a text from you telling me to get off in downtown rather than take the bus to the other end of the city to go home.

As hungry as I am, my watch flashing 5:40PM at me makes my decision for me. Room 815 awaits and as divine as coffee and pastry sounds right about now, I'm actually excited for whatever it is you have planned for us.
