Okay, I have a genuine question for anyone familiar with Maori culture, haka, and/or Aotearoa historical practice, because I've been trying to google and not getting any helpful answers.
So the video of Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke performing a haka in Aotearoa/NZ Parliament in response to a recent bill has been all over my feeds. I understand why she protested the bill, I know the historical significance of the haka and what it is, I absolutely get (and enthusiastically support!) using the haka in this situation.
My question is, when she starts chanting, multiple other MPs join in with her, both in chanting words and in doing hand/arm/physical motions. Is this particular haka something that other people would be taught? Is it like a hymn or something similar, where you would probably learn it in a cultural setting and recognize it if someone started saying the words in any other setting?
Basically, how did everyone else know the words and be able to join in once she started the haka, and how do you distinguish one haka from another?
