Accidental Kavetham
I am 70k into my Scaraether fic now, and thought it would be a fun little game to count how many times Al-Haitham and Kaveh forgot that they aren't the main subjects of this fic.
It is - It is a lot.
Excerpts Under the Cut!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When they step into the chamber, they are not the only visitors present. Aside from the Mahamata, who is standing off to the side of the Grand Sage’s desk, there’s a blonde man in flashy clothes and with a feather in his hair. He stands bent forward, with his hands braced on the desk. Seated in front of him is, presumably, Al-Haitham.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Good morning, Panah,” she greets the man in a whisper. “I take it that Kaveh is in rare form today.”
The Mahamata huffs, and then shakes his head in defeat. “They’ve been at it for half an hour already,” he laments quietly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“ – cannot expect me to have the place cleaned on my own. I know you don’t believe me when I say this, but I have work to do just as much as you do – And with deadlines, to boot!” Kaveh seethes. “I know I have let this fly in the past, and the timing is questionable, but – ”
“But,” Al-Haitham cuts in, “Now you have the pent up frustration of feeling left out during a great time of change. And you’ve decided to take it out on me. Rather than rationalize everything and find a solution, you have decided to lean on your emotions and use your ideals as a crutch once again.”
Something in those words must have struck a nerve; Kaveh recoils in response. He stands straight and swivels around. Even with a hand covering his face, Abel can see the anger and the hurt that has twisted his features.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To his credit, Kaveh seems to be rather faithful to his god. Though he still looks akin to a kicked dog, the man nods obediently before stepping away and quietly beginning to count. As he does, Abel and Buer step up to the desk. At first, Al-Haitham’s eyes do not leave Kaveh’s back. Though most of his face betrays very little – Abel thinks he sees something soft and concerned in his eyes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Abel has never quite seen himself as a comedian, (even if Celestia might think otherwise); even with his biting sarcasm. But Buer laughs as he shares his honest insights. “The Acting Grand Sage is emotionally constipated and needs to help his husband with the chores,” he tells her. “And Nabil needs to take gods less seriously. I thought he would crumble on the spot while he was speaking with you.”
Tears are in her eyes as Buer says, “You’re not wrong about Nabil, but – ” She chokes on another hiccup and tries in vain to wipe at her eyes. Her cheeks are rosy from all of the laughter. “Al-Haitham and Kaveh are not married,” she explains. “If you asked them, they would say they were not even friends.”
At that, Abel scoffs. “They could have fooled me,” he gruffs. “They bickered like an old couple.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaveh, dangling from over the banister, smiles and walks away. Aether passes a glance to Cyno, and he asks, “So, he’s in a good mood; how long do you think before he starts fighting with Al-Haitham?”
Cyno snorts, and he says, “Depends on how much wine he’s already had. If he’s buzzed by the time the food arrives, he’ll be far too clingy to be able to argue.”
“They need to just kiss already – ” Paimon grits.
“Paimon – ” Aether scolds. “That’s none of our business.”
“It’s true, though!”
“Give it time,” Cyno cuts in, as they make their way up the stairs. “You could say they mate like sloths – they take it slow.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tighnari, however, is more of a diplomat than anyone would probably give him credit for. “Abel, I’m glad to see you join us,” he says with a warm smile. “You already know Cyno, but have you been acquainted with Al-Haitham and Kaveh?”
Abel is about to answer, when the Acting Grand Sage beats him to it. “We have, yes – though, I imagine his first impression of Kaveh may not have been a good one,” he says with a sideward glance to the man beside him.
“And now whose fault might that be?” Kaveh bites. “Huh, Al-Haitham? I wouldn’t have been so riled up if – ”
Before things can devolve so prematurely, Tighnari clears his voice and says, “Knowing you both – I imagine the blame falls equally between the two of you.” Then, with a chuckle, he says to Abel, “Then I am certain you’ve seen their worst. If you were still willing to come tonight, then that means you’re a better man than me.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“My mother sent another letter this week,” Kaveh says quietly. His eyes search the depths of his goblet, as if the wine holds all of the world’s secrets. “She and her husband are considering fostering a child, she told me.” Al-Haitham’s hand finds Kaveh’s back – and perhaps that demonstrates the weight of this, that he will not shrug away Al-Haitham’s touch.
“No mention of visiting, like she implied last time?” Tighnari prods. When Kaveh shakes his head, Tighnari tsks. “Kaveh, I know this doesn’t quite ease what you are feeling right now – just remember that it is a her-problem. You aren’t what she’s avoiding.”
Kaveh lets out a humorless breath. His smile is hollow and pinched when he says, “I know. And I think that’s what makes it feel worse. I’m not enough for her to push through it.” Al-Haitham brushes away the hair that falls in Kaveh’s eyes, after he shakes his head. “It has been years. She said that she – that she was doing better. Why can’t she at least meet me halfway?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Al-Haitham and Kaveh are just ahead of them, and Abel watches as they walk together; weight leaned into each other, with Kaveh’s head on Al-Haitham’s shoulder.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beside him, Paimon snickers. But Kaveh simply hums. “I ought to bring some flowers home today, too. But what to pick…?”
“You could try something that Al-Haitham will like,” Paimon suggests. She tilts her head innocently and asks, “What’s his favorite flower?”
“As far as I know,” Kaveh scoffs, “he doesn’t really have one. That man has such a questionable eye for beauty.” Absently, he taps a finger to his chin. “Though, he does seem to tolerate Padisarahs the best, when I bring those home. And they’d look lovely with some Mourning Flowers, for contrast…”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Abel knocks on the front door to Al-Haitham (and Kaveh’s) house, he half-expects for there to be no reply. It is midday, and he is well aware that the Acting Grand Sage should be working at this time – even if it is a weekend. And Kaveh, for that matter, is often out of the city on days like this one; when the sun is out and there is nary a cloud in the sky. The perfect kind of day for sketching, he’d been told.
So, when he instead hears a loud crash from inside, and a panicked yelp – Abel can’t help the confusion that he feels.
“Nobody’s home!” Kaveh calls out. “Oh – I mean – fuck – ”
Abel rolls his eyes at the absurdity, and he calls through the door, “I was looking for an interior designer, but since there’s nobody home, I guess I’ll just ask Al-Haitham instead – ”
The door flies open, and Kaveh stands in the frame sweaty and red-faced. “Absolutely,” Kaveh pants, “not.” He runs a hand through his own disheveled hair and then says, “Let me get my shoes, and I’ll be right there.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Through the chaotic white noise of his thoughts, Abel hears a knock at his front door. He stands to open it, and is taken aback moments later to find Al-Haitham standing before him. “We need to talk,” he says without preamble. “May I?” Abel is too confused to think straight, so he just wordlessly moves out of the way to let Al-Haitham step in. He closes the door behind them, and he watches as Al-Haitham takes in Abel’s new furnishings. “Kaveh did a good job,” he says mildly. “It does look more lively in here.”
“You said we needed to talk?” Abel finally speaks. “I can’t imagine it was only to come comment on your partner’s interior design skills.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“May I ask you why?” Al-Haitham presses. “Kaveh is worried about you. He doesn’t know, but he suspects. I have watched him pace and ramble over you for a few days, now.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tighnari and Cyno come with cards and dice, and Kaveh brings with him a cooked meal to share. Al-Haitham has a bottle of wine to pair with the meal that has Kaveh smiling proudly at him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After one particularly high-stakes victory, in which Al-Haitham claims the crown, Kaveh cheers and throws his arms around his partner. Uninhibited by the liquor in his belly, he draws Al-Haitham into a deep kiss and giggles against his lips. The song changes to something deeply romantic and energetic. It is an Inazuman melody, one Abel very vaguely remembers from his younger days. Kaveh takes a liking to it, and he pulls a stunned Al-Haitham to his feet with him. They fall into a sloppy dance together, led mostly by Kaveh’s sheer excitement.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaveh cries in a chair nearby, with Al-Haitham’s hand rubbing circles into his heaving back.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is hard to tell after that, if Kaveh is laughing or crying, or both. Al-Haitham manages to pry Kaveh away, and doesn’t even flinch when Kaveh latches onto him.

Diary of a Junebug
Keeping memories by making models of our travels and using old mementos to explore the past
It’s funny how much can change in a year without realizing it. Even without any drastic, life altering changes, when you look back exactly one year ago, things are almost always different in some way. For example, one year ago from this moment, I haven’t yet met most of the people visiting the camp right now. And one year ago, I’m pretty sure we were all in different phases of life.
I’m not the kind of person who looks too deeply into the past with nostalgia tinged glasses, I’m more of a focus on the present type. Though it’s nice to look back and see how far you’ve come, what you’ve accomplished, learned, and all that. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that you were once there and now you’re here. Sure, there were a lot of twists, turns, and mistakes, but that’s part of the experiences that shaped you into who you are today. Sounds trite, I know, but there’s some truth to it.
If anyone knows all too well about the passage of time, it’s Raniya. I can’t imagine how disorienting it was for her to have to readjust to the outside world after being trapped in the ruins for so long, unaware that centuries had passed since her disappearance. While she’s pretty much gotten over that show - it didn’t really take her that long, she said - though there are times when it really hits her like a ton of bricks that the life she once knew and the people she had grown up with are no longer there.
Finding her assistant Aliphelia and the letters her mother and sister left for her is one of those “brick things”, as she called them. It’s just something she’ll have to grieve and accept, much like life in general. You gain some, you lose some, that’s just how it is.
This event’s kinda special because we’re looking back on past adventures and making mementos out of them. By that, I mean we’re making miniature models of some of the places that we’ve traveled to, which is a fun challenge. For a beginner like me, my models are very much on the simpler side, just enough to recapture the essence of the place I’m trying to recreate.
Take Adrikha City, for example, since most of our visitors are from there. Obviously, with it being a big city and all, there’s no way a miniature would capture everything or else it’ll be super cluttered. So I stick with the big stuff that makes the city distinctive, like the giant tree at the center and notable places like Dharma and the bazaar. Though I think the bazaar itself deserves its own mini because that place is huge and very lively!
Talha’s got a lot of experience building models so we’ve been going to him for help. Raniya’s got a lot of experience too, though she’s more mechanical stuff while he’s in architecture. I mean, I’d better be used to building all kinds of stuff by now, but still, it’s nice to work with some experts and learn some new things that’ll help us later in the future. After all, crafting things is what I do, so I gotta keep up, improve my skills, pick up some new skills - all that fun stuff.
So, like I said, about one year ago, I didn’t really know people like Talha, Raniya, Sadiki, Haitham, Nabil, and Amina that well. Now we all keep in touch and have since then gotten to know each other a little better. Plus there’s one new person, Laith, who’s a distant cousin of Sadiki. He’s from the desert, born and raised there, but he’s quite familiar with the city having traveled back and forth a lot. And because he knows the desert like the back of his hand, he’s the kind of person who you want to find when you end up getting lost.
Things have been busy with Dharma as usual, even when it’s summer as there’s still classes going on. Laith’s using this time to get acquainted with the way they run things since his organization’s gonna be working closely with them. Over the past year, Dharma’s been working on reestablishing connections with various communities that they either fell out or cut ties with in the past, mainly in the desert and the outskirts of the rainforest. So far, they’ve been successful for the most part, but it’s understandable why there’s still some hesitation, and that’s just another hurdle they’ll have to handle with care.
Laith was aware of the changes going on since Nahla took charge, so he knew it was a matter of time before he met Sadiki again. They were raised by Laith’s grandfather for a time when they were young - sometime after Sadiki was adopted by Cobra, who was living in the desert at the time. Then they had a falling out and Cobra moved back to the city, taking Sadiki with him.
Years passed and the four of them just went on with their lives until Laith’s grandfather, who was dying after years of ill health, wanted to reconcile with Cobra. It was his way of clearing his conscience so his successor wouldn’t be burdened by the past, though he did it in such a roundabout way that initially left Laith and Sadiki baffled. Well, there was a lot of things in the past they have questions about that still doesn’t make sense, though it literally has nothing to do with them or the present, so it’s better to just leave it at that.
It didn’t take long for Laith to become a part of Sadiki’s circle, especially since he’s the kind of person who makes friends easily. Raniya said that it’s remarkable how he manages to find time to be all over the place helping others out, leading her to wonder at first if he had a twin or something. Turns out, he just likes going out and meeting new people and spending a lot of time in the city provided many opportunities for that - that’s really all there is to it.
Now that he’s part of Connie’s entourage, he has even more opportunities to travel, especially outside of Adrikha. Being here at the camp is actually Laith’s first time outside of the Celestine Onyx, so that’s exciting! He officially joined around the same time as Josette, so he spent quite a bit of time in Marippe during their training because they had to work around her schedule. Once things settle down, he’s actually considering taking some doubles just to explore new places. especially since it won’t be long before Connie and Pai set off to Sazona.
Right now, along with getting acquainted with Dharma, Laith is considering renting a place in the city so he won’t have to travel back and forth as much. Sadiki, Nabil, and Amina are more than happy to let him crash for a couple nights, which they have, but he doesn’t want to inconvenience them. It’s still up in the air as there’s a lot to consider like money and all, though the more he thinks about it, the more he’s leaning towards the idea. Sadiki, Nabil, and Talha are helping him look around, not just strictly in Adrikha City, so they’ll work something out eventually.
I mean, the commute from his home to the city sounds tiring, and if he’s gonna basically split his time between the two places, he’s better off getting a space of his own. Sure, running around’s no problem for Laith - maybe for now - but he does need to rest once in a while, especially when things get really busy.
Of course, there’s the option of being a roommate, which Laith isn’t entirely opposed to, though chances are that he’ll have to live with a complete stranger. If Raniya wasn’t living in a one bedroom apartment, she’d be more than happy to take him in. However, she does tend to work on projects late at night, so maybe she might not be ideal for an early riser like him. Talha’s similar in the sense that he tends to pull all nighters on projects too, usually hammering away on something, though Haitham’s lived with him long enough that he’s used to the noise.
Speaking of roommates, I finally learned about why Haitham and Talha, a seemingly unlikely duo, ended up living together. As it turns out, Laith was curious about that and the nature of their relationship too, especially since he usually sees them together in the bazaar. I remember Pai saying that she wasn’t sure if they were friends or complicated exes, and it certainly seemed that way when I first met them, especially during the festivities last year. Apparently, things between them mellowed out since then, so they’re now much more chill between each other - occasional bickering aside.
So Talha and Haitham go way back - their parents were colleagues, renowned researchers from Dharma. Out of the four, only Talha’s mother remains and she’s living in Bonsai with her second husband. Haitham was raised by his grandmother and she helped Talha and his mother out a lot after his father died. They weren’t exactly childhood friends in the sense that they were close even though they sort of grew up together - like, they were aware of each other’s presence, but they never really went out of the way to become well acquainted with one another.
Then they became students at Dharma and wound up working on a research project together, except that had a lot of ups and downs, so they ended up parting ways. Talha graduated first since he’s a couple years older and he became an architect, which also had a lot of ups and downs - more low points than he’d like to admit, but sometimes that’s how it is. By then, his mother had remarried and moved to Bonsai while he chose to stay in Adrikha. Not long after she left, he decided to take the plunge and go freelance, a risky move that ended up paying off in the long run - not that much in terms of money, which is a whole ‘nother story, but he’s become somewhat of a household name.
Haitham initially followed in his grandmother and parents’s footsteps by becoming a researcher, but he found it too stressful at times. As a student, he worked part time in the library mostly doing menial tasks, mainly so he can earn some extra money to buy books to read at home. He’s actually got quite an extensive library - plus, he always carries a book with him whenever he has downtime - so he’s a real bookworm. And it so happens that he decided to join Connie’s entourage because he can travel and get all kinds of books he won’t be able to get back home - at least not without paying an absurd amount of money.
Long story short, he was so good at his job that he got promoted to more secretarial duties, then worked his way up to admin, eventually working under the former head of Dharma. Some call him a glorified secretary, which is obviously an oversimplification - though he said it was pretty much like that back then. When management was pretty much overhauled - meaning a good number of them resigned or got kicked out - and Nahla was rightfully reinstated, Haitham began taking on a more active role in Dharma’s affairs.
He was actually considered as a candidate to replace some of the higher ups, only for him to keep rejecting for the sole reason of not wanting a stressful job, which is totally valid. Some people are okay with a boring office job and actually don’t mind, or even enjoy doing the admin tasks, sending emails, shuffling papers, organizing files - like, there’s nothing wrong with that, especially if you’re good at it. Plus, he gets paid pretty well for it - the whole faculty basically got a nice raise when management changed hands and thoroughly investigated the institution’s finances, which had been - surprise, surprise - mismanaged by the former higher ups.
So, somewhere between all that - at least, before Dharma’s upheaval - Talha was going through a rough time. He took on a big project that made him famous, but it cost him a lot, leaving him in a difficult financial situation. Haitham, out of all people, decided to help him out after unexpectedly running into him in the bazaar. Talha doesn’t remember too much about what happened since he had been out drinking, but he apparently spilled everything to Haitham, probably because he was the first person he came across who he recognized. And that’s basically how Talha ended up moving in with Haitham.
The funny thing is that they’ve been living together for a couple years now and aside from some friends, no one else knows about it. Part of it was because Talha was embarrassed - to think that a renowned architect couldn’t afford to live on his own - yeah, I get it. Meanwhile, Haitham never cared about what other people thought of him, so he never said anything. Talha complained that he was more of a housekeeper than a roommate, which Haitham doesn’t exactly deny.
And of course, another reason why no one would ever think of them being together was because they fought a lot. Back then, it was more than just bickering, like it was near screaming matches, at least for Talha. I remember back during the tournament there was definitely sparks flying between them - I wasn’t sure if they were good or bad. Though based on everyone else’s lack of reaction, I took that as normal, or they’re just so used to it that it no longer even registers. Talha gets riled up and Haitham would keep provoking him - that was the gist of it in simple terms.
There didn’t seem to be any malice, more like they had trouble seeing eye to eye on things, which leads to poor communication, which leads to frustration. Most of their grievances go way back to that failed research project, which they both said it was simultaneously a failure and a success. The kind of thing that brings out the best and worst in people. Still, even with all the conflicts and disagreements, they kinda still had some sort of trust as in they have a long history together and if shit went down then at least they can turn to each other. After all, they wouldn’t be living under the same roof if they couldn’t.
So during that tournament last year, Talha learned about an incident that his father was affected by. That was why he ultimately decided to decline the award since that researcher fucked over a lot of people and their careers, his father especially as he never was able to recover from that. Not too long after, Talha’s father became ill and eventually died while the incident was eventually forgotten and buried.
In fact, about half of the staff working on the event were kids when the whole thing happened about 20 years ago. They were aware that something happened, but obviously, since most of them were pretty young - as in under 10 most likely- they didn’t really pay that much attention to it once the hype died down.
Basically, in a roundabout and totally unrelated way, that whole investigation about this incident from 20 odd years ago somehow led to Talha and Haitham finally making more of an attempt to get along. Since Haitham was part of the staff organizing the event, and he works closely with Nahla, they were the ones who started looking into things when they realized there was a connection. It was just a coincidence when Talha ended up winning and the researcher’s daughter noticed that he looked familiar because she was acquainted with his father. There’s obviously more to it, but long story short, Talha learned from Haitham that the researcher did work with his father and led to him becoming disillusioned with life.
These days, Talha and Haitham are getting along better, though they still bicker every now and then. By the time Laith started coming to the city more often he always saw them together, so he naturally became curious about their relationship. I mean, it would make sense to infer that, “Hey, these guys are always together, obviously they’re pretty close.” Then you wonder, “Are they besties? Are they a couple? Married?” Again, it makes sense because they seem like a package deal sort of thing.
As for what exactly they are, they either are being cryptic on purpose - at least on Haitham’s end - or they really have no idea - probably more for Talha. Call them friends and they’re like, ”Yeah, you can say that.” Well, if you said that like a couple months ago, maybe there’d be some hesitation, and something along the lines of “It’s complicated”, and then things get awkward. Call them exes and they suddenly change the subject. Someone, I don’t remember who - maybe Haniyya, or Nilou, or Pai - actually asked them that on separate occasions and it was basically one of those moments where you’re like maybe I shouldn’t have said that.
Now, if you ask if they’re a couple, that’s apparently a, even more loaded question that maybe even they’re not so sure of. Yeah, they do seem like an old married couple, so I can’t blame people for wondering if they are dating. The thought has definitely crossed my mind. It’s just kinda interesting that they kinda skirt around that, neither giving a confirmation or denial. Again, it could just be that they have no idea and some relationships are blurry like that, especially one as messy as theirs, but I gotta admit it’s kinda funny seeing them being like ????
Honestly, if I was in their shoes, I wouldn’t know how to answer either.
Sadiki, Amina, and Nabil have known them forever and even they’re like, “What’s the deal with you two?” I get it though, complicated relationships and all that. Then you throw in romance and it’s even more messier because that’s how romance is. Basically, they have a lot of history together to the point where their lives are pretty much entwined, that’s probably the best way to put it.
Whatever lies in store for Talha and Haitham in the future, whether they decide to stay friends, pursue a romantic relationship, or part ways, I wish them the best. I’m glad that they’re getting along better and the others are happy that their arguing has gone down a lot to mostly bickering in the good natured kind of way - like, that’s just how they are. Not only they get along better, they’re also happier too, which I think is the most important thing.
Kinda interesting how we’re making miniatures of our past travels and yet we’re talking a lot about the near future. We’ve all got nothing grand in mind, just little things that we’re looking forward to, and I think that’s what life’s all about - the little moments that keep us going.

[TASK 147: OMAN]
In celebration of Asian American Heritage Month, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 160+ Omani faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever faceclaim or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK - examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

Once in a while, having two camp events back to back isn’t too bad. As long as they’re not too elaborate and there’s enough time to rest, it’s actually not too overwhelming. It’s nowhere like the early days when we had something going on pretty much every week. After pulling back and taking things at a slower pace, I never want to go back to that jam packed schedule.
Luckily for me, these two events are much chill as they’re both crafting events, one involving gyroids and the other microchips and unusual mechanics. While scavenger hunts are fun, we’re mostly here just to enjoy the scenery and hang out.
With a short break in between, Sadiki and Haitham were hanging around until the others joined them. I think out of the rest of the group - Amber, Talha, Raniya, Layla, Nabil, and Amina - only Sadiki and Amber have been to the camp. I can’t remember the last time Amber visited but she’s still familiar with the place.
Connie’s adventuring team’s getting so big that it’s hard to keep track of who’s who, much less remember who’s been to the camp.
This event is kind of a side project between Talha and Raniya involving some ancient mechanics. Raniya heard about the Emblem Cure microchips showing up at the beach and wanted to get her hands on some. According to her, Emblem Cures are unusual microchips that can provide their own energy source depending on the equipment. As to how, that’s still a mystery, which is what the project’s trying to figure out.
With help from Amber, Sadiki, Layla, and Nabil, Raniya’s got a lot of mechanics to test these microchips on. Along with those, we’re also crafting our own stuff to see if the microchips work with those as well. In other words, it’s very different from past scavenger and crafting events, so it has been fun and interesting.
I don’t know anything about microchips, but at a glance, I can tell that Emblem Cures are special. Raniya says they’re ancient tech, though there’s a debate regarding the time period they were invented. Apparently it’s a controversial topic in academic circles, so Nabil cut her off right before she was about to go off on a rant.
I have no problem listening to people being passionate about niche stuff, but there’s obviously a time and place for that. From the looks Layla, Talha, and Amina exchanged, I have a feeling that this happens quite a bit. Raniya’s depth of knowledge on ancient mechanics really is quite something.
Nabil seems to be the straight man of the group, keeping everyone in line and focused on the task. Whether Amina, Sadiki, and Amber get distracted by something, Talha and Haitham start bickering, or Raniya begins going off on a wild tangent, Nabil always swoops in just in time. They’re all a lively bunch.
Compared to Adrikha City during a festival, out here at the camp is a lot quieter and less busier, so I got to know everyone better. I don’t mind the hustle and bustle of the city, but sometimes it can be a little too much. It’s hard to focus and get to know one another when there’s a million different things going on in the background.
It was sweet seeing Amina and Amber together. Amber mentioned that she took care of Amina when she wandered into Bonsai and pretty much saved her life. Before meeting Amber, Amina was traveling with her caretaker, someone she doesn’t have fond memories of, which was why she escaped.
Amina was born in Adrikha to a teenage mother who had to give her up. The whole timeline’s unclear, but based on what Sadiki could dig up, Amina’s mother reluctantly handed her over to a shady organization that claimed they could cure Amina’s congenital heart condition. In reality, the organization was performing unethical experiments on children with various health issues, often leading to catastrophic results. Amina really was lucky to have survived.
While Sadiki was not raised by the organization, he had an encounter with one of the caretakers as a child. That so-called doctor performed dangerous experiments involving using children as vessels for demon remnants. Out of the hundreds of children he experimented on, only two survived - Sadiki and Amina.
The organization used Amina as a weapon, which was why she often accompanied the “techs” on their travels. She’s still not quite sure what happened when they went out and she has no desire to look into it. All she can say is that when that thing took over, she had absolutely no control over its actions. That didn’t make her feel any less remorseful though. How awful and fuck those people for using her like that.
On their way to Bonsai, the group was attacked by monsters and Amina took advantage of the chaos to flee to the city where she first ran into Luci. Obviously, because of what she’d been through, Amina was reluctant to let anyone get close to her out of fear. Looking back, she says she’s embarrassed and ashamed of how she acted. Even now, years later, she admits that she’s still trying to make up for that.
Amber keeps telling her to stop apologizing since it’s ancient history, and I agree. She couldn’t help but act the way she did. And even if she was terrible as she claimed she was, the fact that she later realized that and apologized for her actions, that’s more than enough. You can’t change the past, but you can change the future with your present actions. I think Amina’s far past the need to prove or redeem herself at this point. Girl’s been through a lot for someone so young, I think she’s allowed to act out - within reason, obviously.
It wasn’t easy, but Amber managed to break down Amina’s walls and slowly got her to open up. Luci was understandably concerned about what would happen if Amina lost control, so he tried to look into the organization. It wasn’t until when the techs were later apprehended by another faction when Amber found out about Sadiki.
Like Amina, Sadiki was born under similar circumstances - unmarried single parent unable to care for a child with health problems lured by some doctor who gave false hopes. Except he got lucky and was rescued and adopted by a now retired renowned researcher. That researcher, Cobra, had extensively studied the effects of demon remnants for some time, so he thought that he could save Sadiki from being overtaken. For months Cobra worked tirelessly to not only care for Sadiki, but also find a cure for him as well.
That cure was a complex seal that was powerful enough to not only incapacitate the demon’s power, but also weaken it over time. As far as Sadiki knows, the seal is pretty much unbreakable, the only real way to get rid of it is for the vessel to die. Since he and Amina are the only ones with it, there’s really no conclusive evidence other than it’s effective. Neither one has experienced any side effects ever - Sadiki can definitely vouch for it as he’s had it for over 20 years without any issue. So while it doesn’t get rid of the curse, it suppresses it in such a way that it’s like the curse is no longer there.
While Amina grew comfortable in Bonsai, she said she still felt somewhat like an outsider. Amber felt she made a lot of progress since taking her in, especially after knowing that her former caretakers could no longer reach her. But she also understood Amina’s reluctance and agreed that she needed a fresh start in order to fully move on. That’s where Sadiki, and later Nabil, came in.
After hearing about Amina, Sadiki made a trip to Bonsai to see her. He was able to confirm that he and Amina were possessed by the same demon and created a seal for her. When he and Amber found out that Amina was originally from Adrikha, they suggested that she go back with him and build a new life there. Amina decided to take up on the offer and left with Sadiki a month later.
Not too long after arriving in Adrikha, Nabil asked Amina if she was interested in being a Forest Keeper. She said she didn’t quite understand what he was saying at the time, so she said yes because she was afraid of coming off as rude. It wasn’t until when she began her training when she realized that she had an affinity for the forest. Since then, she’s made a name for herself as a junior Forest Keeper, which was how she later met Connie and Pai when they got lost the first time they arrived.
Now that her health has improved tremendously thanks to advances in medicine, Amina’s able to live more independently without fear. it’s hard to believe that just a year ago, her heart condition had progressed to the point where she had to stay in bed most of the time. Her options at that point was either to wait for an undetermined amount of time for a transplant, or try an experimental surgery that may or may not work with her condition.
After consulting with Nabil, Sadiki, and Cobra, she opted for the latter because she said she was tired of waiting around. At least for her, she said she was told that her chances were much better since she’d lived with this condition her whole life and the progression had been much slower than most patients, most who would’ve been long bedridden by her age. So with that in mind, Amina decided to take that chance.
While Sadiki was helping overthrow the government with Connie and the others, Nabil and Raniya took turns watching over Amina. Nabil said he initially wasn’t too happy about being kept in the dark about the Dharma situation, but he understood why. In fact, he was the one who kinda kicked things off when he told Sadiki that something was off and that he might be in danger. He also helped bail the others out after Nahla got arrested, though that later made him a target.
Funny thing was that just as Amina was recovering, Nabil was the one who needed to be watched over after he got injured in an attack by former Dharma officials. So that gave Raniya another reason to stick around and try to get Amina to become one of her students. Since then, Raniya’s been making regular trips to the village to spoil Amina with treats and books, sort of like an overeager aunt.
While Amina finds Raniya a bit intimidating, she enjoys her company. Nabil and Sadiki can only teach her so much, so Raniya helped out in that aspect, especially with reading and writing, so she’s made tremendous progress on that. Amber noted how much she improved on writing her letters to friends as she became more confident in her writing abilities to the point that she doesn’t have to go to Nabil to proofread before sending them out. Writing letters went from something that made her anxious to something that she looks forward to doing. Now her list of penpals has been growing and I just became her latest one!
Raniya, according to Connie and Talha, is an interesting person. I’ve heard others describe her as eccentric and quirky. Even though she looks to be around my age, she’s actually around 200. The story was that she was investigating ancient ruins with a small team when they got into an accident. Raniya was the only survivor and she was trapped inside for a long time. She managed to find her way out, only to discover that centuries have passed since her disappearance.
Obviously it was a shock to her at first, but she accepted things as they are and carried on with her life. So at times, she’s kinda out of touch as she’s still trying to get used to everything. Amina and Layla admire her for her resilience and how she doesn’t back down, but they also know that she has her struggles as well.
As for this event with the microchips, Raniya’s doing it for personal reasons as well. Before the accident, she built this mechanical crab as a lab assistant with her mother and sister. She had initially assumed that Alyphelia didn’t survive the accident. It wasn’t until recently while adventuring with Connie in the desert when she came across her former lab assistant.
She later found out that Alyphelia had been wandering the desert for years searching for her master, and that her mother and sister wrote letters to her in hopes that she was alive. Because the desert’s so large and it was an isolated area with little to no civilization, the few who encountered Alyphelia didn’t know what to do, so they left her alone.
Connie and Raniya heard about the so-called “wandering crab monstrosity” from some villagers by chance, so they decided to check if that legend was true or just a product of someone’s imagination. That, and also to stop someone from breaking into ruins to scavenge for scrap metal and sell those at exorbitant prices.
By then, Aliphelia’s energy was pushing beyond her limits, so it was a miracle that she still managed to trek through the sands. Even though her vision wasn’t working properly due to wear, she recognized Raniya and used the last of her energy to walk to her, delivering the letters her mother and sister had written over the years.
For now, Aliphelia’s resting in Raniya’s basement as it’ll be a while before she can get up and running again. In the meantime, she took some of Aliphelia’s parts to use on Ivy, a mechanic that Nabil found in the woods and adopted as an assistant. According to Raniya, both mechanics have similar tech, which is why some of Aliphelia’s parts are compatible with Ivy. So, until Raniya can get new parts for both mechanics, Ivy will be making use of them for now.
Raniya would’ve preferred to have the mechanics here to test them out directly, but they’re obviously too big to travel with, especially this far. Not to mention ridiculously expensive. Luckily, we can make smaller and less complex mechanics to test things out, which we need to do anyway. While fixing Aliphelia and Ivy are on top of Raniya’s list, the experiment takes priority. At least she can sort of hit two (or three) birds with one stone.
Like I said, this event’s different than anything I’ve done before, and I quite enjoy it. Talha says most research projects are obviously a lot more complex and involved. However, this one’s a bit more straightforward, especially when a couple people - the experts - are doing most of the heavy lifting while the rest of us follow their instructions. That doesn’t sound too bad. Plus, I got to learn a bunch of cool things along the way!
