#HW was the only mobile game i played

hi :] I’ve seen a couple posts from you about ROR Hostile Worlds (specifically High Court characters I think?) and it’s gotten me really curious about them. Since the game died so fast I have no idea where to go to learn about anyone, so is there any place you’d suggest looking? I really only give a shit about the Court characters 💔

I've played HW through and through multiple times over in it's short lifespan Canada experienced. Unfortunately, I never recorded the mission lore so a lot of it is lost to me. What I do have is the HC survivor logs, though.

Arti's log confirms that she's a researcher type of character, though that seems like it undermines her "Herald of the High Court" title in RoR2.

Dutchess is a diplomat from the House Beyond; her house is not expressly confirmed but due to her bodyguard being confirmed to be HB we can reasonably imply that it's the most likely candidate for Dutchess' affiliation.

Despite saying that she has a scepter, the scepter is merely a magical AoE effect. She uses two pistols and all of Commando's animations. Tragically, she was the most boring character to play due to having two AoEs and a basic dash.

Sharpshooter, unlike the others, effortlessly tells us things about herself and the world of RoR. Each word in her log serves a purpose, and is a reminder that there's still a really good writing team somewhere in here. Sharps is a spy who volunteered herself to go on a mission. That alone tells us that she has agency, perhaps due to the honors that she's received. If "every stripe decorating her armor" means those rings of gold (hard to imagine its any other element, we also know that Arti has honors too, and curiously that the other 3 court characters lack those kinds of awards, as their gold is not in rings. And of course, from her we also know that the Court is big enough and separate enough that parts of them spy on each other.

I must add, Sharpshooter's head-on angle was the worst choice for her promo art. Her helmet is very fitting of a Court character when viewed from literally any other angle, and it doesn't even infringe on Arti's territory with it's design.

Valkyrie my wife, take me to Valhalla, or at least walk me to Hel so that I have something to reflect back on during eternal boredom.

Valk had what was the most fun moveset in my opinion, having a projectile that heals you when you go and pick it up. She encouraged risky play, which really fit her namesake in my opinion. Valk has canonically been on Petrichor, and lost her faith to some degree. With Seeker's log in RoR2, I can't help but make connections. Will she be reconditioned if Dutchess is to meet her? Did that "Blight" have anything to do with her revelations? Was this disillusionment just disgust at Arti's and Seeker's initial assignment on Petrichor? Also, what the hell does she mean by "find a new home"? There's few civilizations in the Procyon system, just some research/mining colonies that likely require employment to live in, and the Wraks. Is she seeking out a life in the junkyard? Would make sense if she doesn't want to be reconditioned, though we don't yet know exactly what it means.

I saved the worst for last. Vanguard is boring. Big guy, big gun. They couldn't even give him a sword, how rude. Vanguard is Dutchess' former bodyguard, and is devoutly loyal to the House Beyond. His logbook just says he helps her. Yipee. Wahoo. Im enthralled. When the promo images were first released, Vanguard was compared to the two robots and most people thought he was one of them until they deciphered the cluttered mess of a model he has. He lacks an interesting silhouette from the shoulders down, and playing him is always without satisfaction. How fitting, for the clunkiest-looking character to play clunkily. While his design is boring, from the shoulders up he is very important. to the cohesion of the new Court characters. One must take notice of Dutchess' crown, Sharpshooter's visor, and the mantle Vanguard wears on his back. Vlakyrie is the odd one out of the new Court characters, but honestly a sword would look awkward and couldn't fit with her creative moveset. Such cohesion makes a splitting image of Providence, at least of his head. It's why I give my Valk a cape; I think she deserves to be included in that symbolism.

This is where I remember I actually have a document in my files where I figured out my OCs feelings on the main Scion cast and several world leaders, and vice versa. C'oretta on Urianger, for instance: Urianger is so smart and funny and honestly everyone needed to figure that out much sooner and if anyone ever breaks his heart C'oretta will turn them into a pretzel OK? :D He's a bro! And she appreciates his patience and his eloquent way of speaking.

Urianger finds her energy and intellect endearing, she's always been able to keep up with him and is very helpful at trolling his comrades. She also got the closest to figuring out his scheme in HW, and what his plan was in StB even, which is almost scary. She only didn’t figure out ShB cuz she wasn’t in the First with them.

The blog title does have to do with Dark Autumn, but unsurprisingly that simple of a title was long taken when I got around to making this side blog when she was still my only character. Dark actually did begin as a Lancer/Dragoon when I started playing in early Heavensward. It was a part of a challenge to myself to try not only DPS, but melee, as my time in WoW was entirely on tanks and healers, with some ranged DPS I was bad at, but melee was worse (I legit got angry and couldn't play my paladin if I tried to go Retribution spec, I hated it so much). FF14's longer GCD and combat play works much better for me! I took all 2 years of HW to get through ARR cuz it was my side game at the time. I tried Bard in 4.0 after finally catching up to main story and fell in love with it (as it had actually been completely overhauled in StB from turret caster to the current mobile form).

In character lorewise, Dark is a Gridanian Lancer, and studying at the lancer and archery guilds together is how she met Aeryn, as Dark got back into adventuring after a long and necessary break from it (she'd been at Carteneau as part of the foreign levy with her then-free company; all handwaved backstory, I did not play 1.0). Dark and Aeryn also sought out Jehantel together. Aeryn's the one who went on to become a Dragoon, thanks to her then-secret backstory, while Dark excelled at Bardic skills that Aeryn treats as more of a hobby/flavoring to her spellcasting. Dark's "canon" tank job is Warrior, though she knows a smattering of most of the martial jobs; while I've leveled all the jobs, she cannot IC spellcast anything beyond level 10 or so. Just no ability or aptitude for it, nor does that bug her as Aeryn's own difficulties troubled her. And in the end, Dark always falls back on the Gridanian methods of archer and lancer. They're practical.

So it's still my blogname, and it'd break far too many links to change it, it's printed in some fanzines that way now, and it'd just feel weird to try to change it to something else after *checks sideblog's age* Heck, 9 years.

Hi! I know you're currently playing KH but did you ever end up playing FNAF:SB Ruin? Just curious.

Oh yeah I did, idk if I talked about it on here because like you said searching is impossible LMAO

Ruin was absolutely incredible. I enjoyed every second of it (apart from the non-lift endings)

Does it “redeem” security breach? No. A bad game’s a bad game. I fully consider ruin a separate game to security breach. Just like kingdom hearts 0.2: birth by sleep - a fragmentary passage is both a different game from birth by sleep (even though it shares a name) and dream drop distance (even though it’s only playable in the same collection as ddd)

But it does redeem steel wool.

Before, steel wool made a good game and a bad game, that’s 50/50. They also happen to be my favourite and least favourite in the franchise, so it evens out, but I disliked security breach more than I liked help wanted, so I leaned against steel wool.

But ruin means that it’s now 66.666…/33.333… and I like help wanted and ruin together more than I dislike security breach, so now it’s in their favour.

If they can stick the landing and deliver with help wanted 2, then I’ll be completely happy with steel wool taking on the franchise. They’ve proved that they can make a great game with hw, and proved that they aren’t just a vr company with ruin. Security breach was just a case of overambition really.

If help wanted is a 9 and security breach is a 2, then I’d say ruin is a solid 7. Really good game.

Should I rank the fnaf games? If I get bored.

And I really like the normal ending and kind of dislike the other endings? I’ve come around on the “Brazil” ending because I understand it now, but I just straight up don’t like the scooper ending.

AMD, take your community seriously.

So, the past two years seem to have gone quite well for AMD with the release of Zen and Vega for both desktop platforms and mobile in addition to releasing the RX590 and teasing upcoming processors based on the 7nm architecture.

But there's one forgotten child it seems in your current-gen product line which is Ryzen Mobile APUs. But before we get to those, let's make it clear that with the rumored release of that Surface Pro with an AMD APU and the latest MacBook Pros using Vega 16 and Vega 20 GPUs, there is hope for us getting better drivers as those are devices built by brands that don't tolerate such a mess with drivers.

Now what AMD currently doesn't seem to understand is that we aren't ranting on their lack of driver support and their toleration for what OEMs are doing to basically butcher Ryzen Mobile APUs, but we're trying to help them. I personally wouldn't invest this much time on intel/nVidia because I know that those people don't respond well to community requests, but I always had the feeling that AMD listened to their community, which is why I've made all these posts and tweets in the past.

What the community wants, after trusting this company for such a long time - I mean, let's be honest, Vega was a slight disappointment for those who were expecting something to beat the GTX1080Ti and Ryzen totally loses out to intel in the gaming department, not to say that those products are bad, just to say that to some they are underwhelming and don't pose much of a threat for those who mainly game on their systems.

Ryzen Mobile

Now if we get back to the situation with Ryzen Mobile, which is something a lot worse than we've ever seen before and here are the reasons.

Target

Ryzen Mobile APUs were clearly targeted at people who wanted three things: a fairly slim system, something affordable and most importantly, something that could play most titles at decent settings. In terms of hardware, Ryzen Mobile delivered. The Vega 10 GPU in the Ryzen 7 2700U APU is actually capable of keeping up with the very common MX150 in even 14" systems without being as limited by cooling and power as the MX150 would be in most ultrabooks, but then came the OEMs and decided to turn this amazing 25W chip into a 15W chip that only stands a chance against the 10W MX150 and throttles like crazy.

Stability

Now fine, Ryzen Mobile doesn't perform as well as it could've, software can change that whenever the AMD driver team feels like implementing some more modern technologies. But then comes the stability. I've talked to a lot of people using Ryzen Mobile systems, and we aren't even talking about mid-range or low-end systems here like those single-channel RAM IdeaPads from Lenovo, I've talked to people using ThinkPads, Dells and worst of all HP EliteBooks that report the same issues I've found to occur on my system, ranging widely from random freezing to entire system crashes.

Performance

Not to mention that advanced users, and gamers for that matter, will notice that Ryzen Mobile suffers from some other serious issues including but not limited to memory leaks, throttling (power and heat - STAPM), resolution bugs and screen flickering when using Vari-Bright. I've made previous posts explaining the issues better, so there's no need to repeat what I've said again.

HW acceleration

The issues I mentioned are just the worst of the bunch, I didn't even touch on the fact that VLC doesn't work, most programs don't support proper HW acceleration and games run like shit when compared to using sideloaded drivers that aren't even designed for these chips!

Now again, stability is something I personally put above all else, it shows in the way I've overclocked previous systems and spent a ridiculous amount of money on a system with the Ryzen-PRO chip as I was expecting an enterprise-grade notebook to be stable. I wouldn't have minded a loss of performance if it were at the cost of stability, because a system crashing during an exam is just unacceptable for me. My demands in performance could easily be met by these chips, but at the current state of the drivers stability isn't and can't be.

Solution

What AMD needs to see is that we're doing this out of passion for the company, not because there isn't another option, as /u/Optilasgar has made clear with his comments in the past, that there are many good alternatives, even if at a slight price for either worse build quality or higher expenditures. I've made tens of posts over the internet, and really think that you guys should spend some time and money on improving the drivers as these chips are the future. Even if the 3000-Series turns out to be a success, people will remember what happened on mobile and that you didn't listen to the community when you should've which would be really sad to see.

Post-Famitsu FE:W Thoughts

I am actually more hyped for Fire Emblem Warriors than I was before this Famitsu dump.

Yeah, okay, sure, but I don’t have any particular animosity towards the characters in those games.  My love for Tellius is prolific and unmatched, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have favorites from Awakening and Fates.  No problems there.  The characters ultimately wouldn’t be what would make me excited anyways.  What makes me excited is actually the approach to the whole thing.

I’m not exactly embroiled in the musou fanbase.  I’ve played Hyrule Warriors nearly to completion, but my only other experience is the Gundam crossover, and that was in a Walmart.  I have no idea what other crossovers have been like, or even what the baseline is for your typical DW game.

I had a grand time with HW, but I’d be remiss if I said that the gameplay was deep in any sense of the word.  It’s broad, but not deep.  If I want to beat my foes with a hammer, I can do that, but I can only do that with one character, and most differences between hammers are immaterial in the grand scheme of things.  On harder maps with forced units, it’s silly to even try without using a second player using one of your most powerful characters.  And the general strategy is always more or less the same -- get to the fort, seize the point, beat the boss, grind up your KO count so you get an A rank.  Usually, you’re not actually at risk of death or failure, only of missing the A rank.  That’s fine, but not exactly the hallmark of the pinnacle of gaming.  It lacks layers.

If the class system exists (which is confirmed via Famitsu), there have to be meaningful differences between classes.  There also need to be meaningful differences and/or similarities between characters that share classes.  Ideally, these distinctions go beyond moveset and quickness.

If the weapon triangle exists, it needs to be strong enough to carry weight but weak enough not to be overbearing.  Imo, I think Heroes overdoes it a bit by making it proportional to the unit’s current Atk, making the advantaged state exceptionally brutal.  Rather, I’d like to see relationships along the lines of “striking with an advantageous weapon (opt. as a specific class) allows the attacker to act immediately out of it, even if it was a heavy attack”.  Give that to say, the Assassin class and restrict the “immediate action” to “dodge” and you’ve produced a class/attribute combination that

incentivizes quick movement

causes players to seek advantageous matchups (or requires them to adjust to disadvantaged states)

provides a means of getting in and out of your opponent’s face

draws lines between users of the same weapon and/or class

This is effectively what I’m looking for over all else -- reasons to play the whole cast, and to think critically throughout key portions of each map and objective.  Everything else, I expect to be very similar -- wild combos, beating up hordes of enemies with a single move; all that can stay the same.

Now the pipe dream stuff.

Usually, when people say that “X exists” in a game, they mean more than the mechanic is present.  They mean that the mechanic has a meaningful impact on the game.  Then, to clarify the extent the mechanic affects the game and its overall complexity, they add qualifiers, such as “extensive” or “involved” or “trivial”.  Using the Final Fantasy series as an example for a second, everyone thinks of FFV and Tactics as having “jobs systems”.  Technically, FF1 and 2 also have these, but the inability to change classes midgame and the general lack of differences outside of basic attributes and spell usage kinda sweeps that under the rug.  XIII has a crafting system of sorts, but it doesn’t seem to carry any real weight in how the game is played, so most people don’t think of it or bother to mention it.

This combined with the statement that “class systems exist” makes me hope two things:

That vertical class changes are possible (from tier 1 to tier 2)

That horizontal class changes are possible (from class family A to family B)

If (1) is true, there is cause for the player to try a wide variety of characters and classes if for no other reason than to see the divergence between, for example, a Myrmidon and a Mercenary after promotion.  If (2) is true, there is cause to experiment with each character in all of their existing options to find the best combination of skills, stats, and equipment.  Provided that no particular combination is gamebreaking, that on its own gives many opportunities for depth.  (2) would also provide cause to lean more heavily on recent characters -- each of which already has an established class set that can be carried over relatively easily without concern for whether or not it diverges from the source material.

The other big part of my pipe dream expands off of the interplay between character, weapon, and class.

I’ve heard that in some DW games, every or almost every character can use every or almost every weapon, with the catch being that each has a specialty that they use better -- they can use the higher-rank weapons or have specific key skills that are weapon-specific.  That’s so remarkably FE-like that there’s no reason it shouldn’t be brought to FE Warriors.  Mesh that with stat differentials and character skills, and a wide variety of combinations are possible.  Further distinctions build from how the individual attributes are distributed or earned -- specials can be weapon-specific while ults are character-specific, or something like that.

Expanding off of my example from before, let’s say that Gaius is the Assassin, he can use Swords up to B rank, Knives to A rank, and Bows to B rank, and he’s currently using the Sunrise Katana, which is a B rank sword.  He’s a unit with excellent mobility and attack speed, but his overall damage per hit is less than other units.  He gets a +30 attack bonus for using a weapon he has B rank in, and the Sunrise Katana has three skills: its “basic” katana skill, like a bonus against “Bandit” type units (Brigand, Bandit, Pirate, Berserker) in addition to WTA, its evasive skill as mentioned before, and another A-rank locked skill that Gaius can’t use in his current class.  As a katana, the moveset primarily strikes directly in front of the user, with the special being an extended dash-slash that hits multiple enemies in a line for heavy damage.  Gaius’ ult is an AoE “spell” attack that restores HP to all allied heroes based on the number of enemies hit.  Switching to the Steel Knife would provide +40 attack (absolute, not relative) due to rank bonus, even though the knife type of weapon is generally weaker, and would have just two skills. The new moveset uses more sweeping, disjointed throwing attacks and some short-range thrusts and slashes.  Now rebuild, except it’s Sully, she’s a Paladin using a Short Spear, etc., etc.  Done poorly, it’s effectively the same as before (for me, at least).  Done well, there’s a lot of value added.

And then support attacks.  Dual Strikes would be a wonderful addition to a team musou.

And the most pipe of pipe dreams: roster expansion.

The prevailing thought right now seems to be, “if FE:W does well, FE:W2 might include representation from [insert favorite game here]”.  I think that’s a valid line of thinking, but also there’s the potential for DLC.  Continuing off of recency as a criterion for inclusion and the fact that SoV was done so well (and will hopefully sell accordingly across its lifetime), I think it’s fair to look for Alm, Celica, and their compatriots in a relatively early DLC pack.  Beyond that, we may see a trickling of other characters from games gone by.

The obvious desire is to have characters that I like, but more importantly to have characters that I like in-game.  I love Tetra as a character but there’s no real point for me to try to use her when better options exist.  As a result, I am happy that Tetra is in HW but I never play as her.  That’s the line I want to draw, rather than “okay but Ike is better than Chrom in-universe” or whatever other trivial complaints I can think of.

tl;dr -- I see FE:W as a title that has a lot of potential.  Time will tell whether or not my expectations are realistic or justified, but I’m not dropping my hype for it anytime soon.

everyone else was doing marathon monday celebrations but i stayed in today and continued to work on CSDS hw

i worked on it from like 1pm - 2:30pm. i was debugging line by line but still no luck. so i posted on piazza asking about it. i posted a snippet of my piazza post in yesterday’s post (sunday april 15) but that’s basically the problem i struggled with for several hours. more and more i feel like it’s a problem with my raft implementation. i feel like i sort of have something but not quite there yet...

after posting on piazza i was waiting for a response so i switched gears to mobile app dev. i decided to just manually fetch twilio since the library wasn’t playing well with google app engine. i used urlfetch to do it and now it works! i deployed it but the only issue is that when a user opens it up on their phone, it doesn’t save to firebase. it only saves when they open the link on a desktop. so that’s a problem to look into... worked on that from like 2:30-3:30pm

then went back to debugging CSDS hw with no luck. these homeworks are so hard dude... but it’s good practice i guess

around 5pm dimitri came back from marathon monday stuff and then after a break, we started playing fortnite. i was on a bit of a breakthrough (i think) cause i might’ve found the bug in my raft code. now my logs are being discarded correctly but after the leader snapshots, the followers don’t correctly update their own logs. so that’s something i need to look into...

dimitri and i played from like 5:30pm - 9pm playing duos. we won two of them and we were just doing super well. we’re getting much better at this game now
