“I wish I could offer you a King who is greater than I am. I can’t turn into someone else; I can only be me. But I have discovered that I too am stronger than I thought I was.”
I love both iterations of this kind boy and his dragon.

okay. i’m going to take a few big, deep breaths, and try to explain this as eloquently as possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
how COULD THEY do THIS how could they SPIT in the FACE of all BEAUTY and ART and WONDER how have we GOTTEN HERE why does MY BACK HURT SO DAMN BAD why are we SMASHING our artists into an AI HELL and DISRESPECTING all our mediums of CREATIVITY with a SADNESS born from a CAPITALIST HELLSCAPE
Tumblr media
*cough* i mean,
look at the differences in how the emotions of toothless and hiccup are expressed in each scene. the animated verses the live action. yeah, reality (though we’re talking dragons here) is not at all as interesting as what exists within art mediums blah blah blah. but that’s kind of. . . the point? how to train your dragon is a beautifully animated movie (and it’s soundtrack regularly makes me cry, still).
it’s one of the few movie adaptations of a book that takes the original concept, makes it into something completely different - but still respects and celebrates the original work.
it’s enjoyable for all ages, it’s simple, but brilliant. it’s lovely, and it’s sweet.
all these shit live action remakes are not an attempt to expand on creativity or bring something new to the original it’s just a FUCKING CASH GRAB (and we all know it, but i still would like to yell about it. or i fear i may violently consume a corporate executive).
we, as the general society of powerless, relatively non influential average citizens, get fucked over in every aspect of literally everything in every possible way. the least they could do is make that SHIT they serve us ENTERTAINING.

told myself I wasn’t going to go on a rant, but here we are…
I don’t know why the new live action HTTYD exists besides money. Because it was always obvious to me that if HTTYD went live it would be to differentiate a more book centered remake.
I have pictured how it could work for years, dreaming of seeing my beloved arc of a small scrawny hiccup of a boy become King of the Wilderwest. Of becoming a hero the hard way. A series of two part episodes modeled after Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events.
Opening scene:
Setting a dark room lit by flickering candlelight. Viewers only catch glimpses of the room’s furnishings. Some items still stick out, a chess piece of the rough hewn desktop, a square shield just discernible leaning against it as well. In the center of the shot an old man is taking out a quill to write on his arm a bracelet glints slithering around his wrist. You only see the back of his head and his hand shakes slightly as he writes, “There were dragons when I was a boy” and a voiceover says the words (possibly in Norse for brownie points). As he reads out Hiccup’s first prologue the scene blurs into a gust of snow that clears to reveal a group of motley youths standing at the bottom of an imposing cliff face. Most of the boys are wearing little clothes despite the chill their skin reddening, but near the back of the group two smaller boys huddled near each other as a big wild bearded man yells out their instructions.
And every episode could follow that pattern of showing old Hiccup writing his journey, reading the epilogues and prologues with more little bits and pieces revealed in the room as the series progresses. Like showing old Hiccup’s chest to see he is still wearing Snoutlout’s gold star. And the best part of a long series like the books is that having the actors age throughout is a plus not a minus since Hiccup and his friends start as kids but end as young adults.
Finally the last epilogue once Hiccup sets down the quill and places the pages in a sturdy wooden chest locking it shut, a noise makes him look to the window where something is scratching. He makes a pleased gasp to let in Toothless who is as much the same as he was all those years ago.
But that isn’t quite the end after the first credits the screen goes black to saying “Many Years Later”. A clear day on a quiet beach comes into focus, a young blond girl maybe 8 or 9 is digging in the sand. In the distance getting closer her father is calling to her. Something about a bird’s nest he just climbed up to see and he wants to point it out to her. Ignoring him the girl digs deeper and *thunk* her shovel hits something solid. Scraping it out she reveals the sturdy wooden chest, old and weathered itself now. “What’s that?”, her father asks now behind her. “I don’t know, what do you think could be in it?”. “I’m not sure,” he replies, “but let’s find out together,”.
El Fin
Sorry that got soooo looong. Rant over I promise, had to get that out before I exploded!

Rewatched the Test Drive scene and thought about how Toothless probably must've resigned himself to the possibility that he'll never fly like he used to, especially when there's a human boy on his back who needs a cheat sheet in order to slowly work his tailfin. He'll never be fast again, he'll always have to wait on Hiccup to figure out which is the right tail position, he has to be careful.
And then they fly through that maze of sea stacks and find out that flying is as natural to Hiccup as breathing, apparently.

Dragon rider
Messing around with different pencil brushes for this one. Really like how it looks, especially how it gives the texture of the scales and leather.
This piece is up on my redbubble as prints, stickers and more. Search bluetodraw on redbubble to find my shop!

The fact that the Httyd gang knows about the effect of dragon nip but they are never seen using it on any dragons throughout the franchise unless it's like a last resort or an emergency to stop extremely out of control, hostile dragons. They know that grass is like a drug for the dragons so they never use it against them even to try and train them. As if it is against their moral code to try the easiest way to tame any dragon.
Like, these kids know all these little perks about dragons that Hiccup learned in the first movie. The dragon nip, eels, moving spot of light, specific disabling scratch spots etc. And none of them uses these to befriend or train any dragons throughout the course of the franchise! Dragon nip is an emergency last resort for when they encounter a super aggressive dragon, eels are an absolute no, nobody used shiny laser light spot on any dragons post Httyd 1.
No, they befriend the dragons with trust. They'll only give a dragon scratches after asking permission that is telegraphed in their body language.
The riders respect dragons and there are so many little subtle things which show how they never treat these incredible amazing beings as if they are animals, they always treat them as individuals. As equals.
I love Httyd so much like you have no idea.
