How dare that the live action how to train your dragon did not cast real life dragons. Like I want a historically accurate adaptation. Now you’re telling me they can’t just go out and find a dragon? Weak.

I'm upset about the How to Train Your Dragon live action movie because I think it's really unnecessary, the animation is important to the franchise, there's nothing live action can really add and there's no way they'll get Toothless right. You're upset because they're introducing a single person of colour into a very white story and somehow that breaks the immersion of the pseudo historical viking setting even though you were fine with things like the American and Scottish accents and you know, the literal fucking dragons?! We are not the same fuck off

Regarding the HTTYD live action...
I'm not exactly excited for it. But I don't hate it, and I don't hate the casting decisions. I trust Dean DeBlois to make the best of what really was an inevitable live action remake. It was going to happen whether people wanted it or not, and every decision he made was to hopefully maintain the spirit of the HTTYD franchise.
No, the casting doesn't look exactly the same as their movie/show counterparts, but what's really important is the character's personality and who they are. There's nothing you can do to change their decisions, all you can do is accept they're going to look different and trust in Dean to make it work. Remember, they were casted for a reason. I'm not going to hate on the movie or the actors/actresses until I actually watch the movie for myself.
Anyways have a Snotlout doodle and OC wip...

(Also, if anyone knows of any HTTYD discord severs please let me know, I'm desperate to talk about dragons and whatnot with people...)

Who the hell was in charge of casting the actors for HTTYD (live action version)?
sooo... i've finally seen the cast forbthe live action version of httyd... and I am not impressed. (Keep in mind this is my personal opinon. Also, I apologize for the bad quality of those photos, someone sent them to me and I was too lazy to find themnin a better quality online)
Tumblr media
Let's start with the man, the myth, the legend, Hiccup himself. In one word: no. They cast for a post puberty!Hiccup to portray 15 year old Hiccup. Just no.
Tumblr media
They officially destroyed one of the greatest characters in advance. Someone please tell me how they look even relotely similar. The hair color is the worst part.
Tumblr media
Yeah okay, I actually like this casting. : )
Tumblr media
I'd rather say no. But then I saw the ears and leaned towards yes. Then the hair color changed my mind again.
Tumblr media
Anyone who has seen Deadpool 2 will agree with me that a-splash-of-diabetes Firefist is actually a good casting here. I can totally see him doing an amazing job. : ) But please someone give him a wig.
Tumblr media
In one word: wtf happened here?!??!?! Did they just roll up to a random gas station and abducted a guy?
Tumblr media
I would like to say a thousand mean and hurtful things. Let's just say these things: The hair color and I don't know how they did it but how they managed to cast an obese actor for the scrawniest character is beyond me. : /
Tumblr media
After The Acolyte, I definitely disliked the actor but I will 100% give him a clean slate because they finally managed to cast someone who looked remotely similar to the character thwy were going to portray.
Tumblr media
What the hell... This character had all but 3 lines in the movie ("What are you doing out here, get back inside", "To the ships" and "Everyone is so relieved") and they felt the need to cast someone for her. I am begging you all, don't even give her a costume. Just give her the hat. It'd gonna be great comedic relief. xD
Tumblr media
To finish this off: I really hope this movie doesn't flop, though I have no confidence in it. Not a single live action movie was ever good in the history of live action versions. I grew up with the books/movies. They were perfection. To the producers: please don't destroy a perfectly good franchise in a hope for abgood money grab...

How do you feel about the new toothless, given everyone else in the HTTYD community here seems mostly negative?
Tumblr media
^reference image directly from the trailer^ Personally i dont like it given it has more of a headshape from THW toothless and Homecoming, especially on the side view of the head when he opens his eyes
Tumblr media
just sorta gives me less of a wild animal look and more of a "yes this is dog" look, and tbf even the Huge puppet for 2010's Liveaction play with the egg biter looked better imo.
Tumblr media
but wanted to hear your thoughts on the matter :0
I ain't gonna lie, I HATE how the Toothless in the play looks. It's just...not right. XD I was actually worried the whole time before the trailer was released that the live action Toothless would look like that, so I'm very relieved.
As for what I think, I'm frankly half-half. I don't have many issues tbh (yeah, I know more unpopular opinions from Lumii) and how Toothless looks in it isn't a deal-breaker for me. If I handled how the....night lights of TNRs looked through watching it, Live Action Toothless isn't going to bother me.
I DO wish that they stuck closer to the first movie's model because this version does look a little too "domesticated' to me, but once again, I don't lose sleep over it.
Just...gd anything is better than TNR's night lights...
And I also actually like the live action Toothless's skin texture. I very much want to smoosh it with my hand and I can almost picture what it feels like.

I feel the same way. I’m a big httyd-fan and honestly this EXCATLY why I don’t like the idea of it, even if it’s good, which I dearly hope. It’s just unnecessary. Yeah it looks good and promising and all, but it’s not something original. It’s just the same story all over again. That’s actually my biggest issue with it. And I do agree I like Animation also more than live action, with animation you just have more opportunities and it is in my opinion a form of Art and Storytelling, that should be more appreciated in so many ways. Hel, the httyd-trilogy is the reason why I love animation so much.
These executives or however is in charge of this live action remake trend, should be more focused on making new and original content again and respect Animation more. I can do so much with Animation.
my biggest issue with the httyd live action-and just about any live action reboot is that it seems that the live action adaptations are being made to make the original “better”? like, so many people talk about a live action spiderverse, a live action hercules, a live action PRINCE OF EGYPT (dont piss me OFF.)-like animation is a beautiful work of art, and for some reason putting real people and cgi in it is supposed to be an “upgrade”? im probably being that friend that’s too woke or whatever, but i just think it’s so disrespectful to act like something that takes so much time and effort and energy is immediately considered as lower because it is animated. animation is beautiful, and it is one of the most heartfelt art forms there are, and erasing that for the sake of a cash grab is downright degrading to animation as a medium.

Well, this is isn't a request but... HAVE YOU SEEN THE HTTYD LIVE ACTION TEASER TRAILER I'M SO HAPPY AND EXCITED FOR IT I LOVE HTTYD I HAVE MY WHOLE LIFE!! Well, you might have, but I just wanted to know your opinions on it :)
I've seen it! I've answered an ask about it a bit ago, haha
I'm not a fan of it personally (for several reasons), but I am sharing in the excitement with you guys. It's cool to have new HTTYD media released 14 years after the original came out, and I'm glad more people will get to learn about HTTYD who didn't know about it beforehand. Somehow.
It's definitely going to bring in new fans, and I can only imagine how exciting it'll be for them to discover the original animated movies and shows AND the fandoms around them.
I hope you'll get to see it in theatres! And like what I said in my other ask on the topic, I'm hoping it's going to surprise us and be a lot better than what we're imagining right now.

If I end up complaining about the live action HTTYD (and I probably will), just know I’m not affiliated with the group of people who are going to complain about it because Astrid isn’t white.

My biggest concerns on the live action is how they’ll be able to portray Toothless’ and Hiccup’s relationship. Since that’s kinda the main point in the movie, if they screw that up then that’s that. Unfortunately for them, it’s really easy to screw up (…even when looking at the sequels). The main thing with that relationship is that it’s equal. I think the easiest way to screw them up, is by approaching it as a human and an animal forming a bond. It doesn’t work like that, because as characters, Toothless and Hiccup are equal. It honestly should be approached as a person and a person forming a bond. Because for all the purposes of the story, Toothless is a person. He understands Hiccup, just as Hiccup understands him. And the reason why their bond becomes so strong - stronger than between any other characters, dragon or human - is because they are so similar. The reason why Toothless didn’t kill Hiccup is the same reason why Hiccup didn’t kill Toothless. Because he could see he was just as terrified as him.
So the story should be approached as two characters from opposing sides, neither of whom fit in with their kind. And then they find each other, and finally someone understands them. And this bond is what brings the opposing sides together.
I’m not gonna lie, I don’t have much faith for the live action, but I do hope I’ll be proven wrong. The way to do that, is for the live action to show me that the change of medium can bring something else to the story. Because the thing about How To Train Your Dragon is, that I think it’s a perfect example of a perfect medium having been picked for a story. Those flying scenes where you feel like you’re flying with the characters wouldn’t have been possible with 2D. And in live action, the bond between Hiccup and Toothless wouldn’t have felt real, because they clearly don’t exist in the same world. 3D animation is the perfect mix of realism and non-realism, for a magical fairytale such as this to exist in.
That’s another thing I’m worried about. How they’ll be able to convince the audience of the relationship between Toothless and Hiccup when one of them is animated and the other isn’t. But that’s to be seen.
But they do need to do something with the story to show that the change in medium was worth it. A shot for shot recreation is just gonna a give a shittier version of the original. But I think there are ways they could manage. They could focus on the contrast between the joyful and the colorful with the more terrifying aspects of the story. To make them compliment each other. Because the dragons, especially Toothless, are scary. Like, there’s a reason why the Nightfury is so feared. That’s an aspect I wish they’d hone on. How terrifying Toothless can be. I mean think about the end battle. All that they threw at that thing, and it barely reacted. And then compare that to just one blast from Toothless. And the way they won, was by using Toothless’ skills against it. Silent, out of sight, and never misses. The only reason the Vikings managed to capture Toothless, is because Hiccup asked him not to hurt his dad.
So if they really use the live action medium, to bring out how terrifying dragons, especially Toothless are, then they’ll be able to showcase just how batshit insane Hiccup is for everything he does. And just how special their bond is.
And in turn, I think it would be great if they did the same for the Vikings. Make them scary, and show the audience why the dragons would fear them.
But yeah. We’ll see. It’s not Disney, so maybe I can have like an ounce more hope, but honestly…ehhh. I really don’t have a lot of faith. I don’t think the live action is necessary, I don’t think they’ll be able to use it to change or enhance anything. But, like I said, I do hope I’ll be proven wrong.

told myself I wasn’t going to go on a rant, but here we are…
I don’t know why the new live action HTTYD exists besides money. Because it was always obvious to me that if HTTYD went live it would be to differentiate a more book centered remake.
I have pictured how it could work for years, dreaming of seeing my beloved arc of a small scrawny hiccup of a boy become King of the Wilderwest. Of becoming a hero the hard way. A series of two part episodes modeled after Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events.
Opening scene:
Setting a dark room lit by flickering candlelight. Viewers only catch glimpses of the room’s furnishings. Some items still stick out, a chess piece of the rough hewn desktop, a square shield just discernible leaning against it as well. In the center of the shot an old man is taking out a quill to write on his arm a bracelet glints slithering around his wrist. You only see the back of his head and his hand shakes slightly as he writes, “There were dragons when I was a boy” and a voiceover says the words (possibly in Norse for brownie points). As he reads out Hiccup’s first prologue the scene blurs into a gust of snow that clears to reveal a group of motley youths standing at the bottom of an imposing cliff face. Most of the boys are wearing little clothes despite the chill their skin reddening, but near the back of the group two smaller boys huddled near each other as a big wild bearded man yells out their instructions.
And every episode could follow that pattern of showing old Hiccup writing his journey, reading the epilogues and prologues with more little bits and pieces revealed in the room as the series progresses. Like showing old Hiccup’s chest to see he is still wearing Snoutlout’s gold star. And the best part of a long series like the books is that having the actors age throughout is a plus not a minus since Hiccup and his friends start as kids but end as young adults.
Finally the last epilogue once Hiccup sets down the quill and places the pages in a sturdy wooden chest locking it shut, a noise makes him look to the window where something is scratching. He makes a pleased gasp to let in Toothless who is as much the same as he was all those years ago.
But that isn’t quite the end after the first credits the screen goes black to saying “Many Years Later”. A clear day on a quiet beach comes into focus, a young blond girl maybe 8 or 9 is digging in the sand. In the distance getting closer her father is calling to her. Something about a bird’s nest he just climbed up to see and he wants to point it out to her. Ignoring him the girl digs deeper and *thunk* her shovel hits something solid. Scraping it out she reveals the sturdy wooden chest, old and weathered itself now. “What’s that?”, her father asks now behind her. “I don’t know, what do you think could be in it?”. “I’m not sure,” he replies, “but let’s find out together,”.

Sorry that got soooo looong. Rant over I promise, had to get that out before I exploded!
