You know you’ve hit rock bottom when you’re standing naked in front of a monument meant to honor a dead version of yourself while you’re alive, holding the Nightwing suit in one hand and the pill helmet in the other
#peak male form actually#jason todd#dc#I love how nobody but Martian Manhunter really knew the brothers in blood arc had started and even then it was just a side note#because too much shit was happening in this story for that to have any bearing whatsoever at that moment#but also because Jason playing dress up isn't a big league issue it just happened to cross manhunter's radar lol#so Jason makes the decision to dress up as Nightwing and go to ny as black adam is destroying the world and the trinity is gone#he finds a group of criminals about to run off with a suitcase of cash#he gives them a mini lecture about how irresponsible it is for decorated self-important heroes like Bruce to disappear at a time like this#and how it’d also be irresponsible of him if he’d let them get away knowing they’re going to fuck shit up while the world is ending#it’s implied he killed them#then it cuts to a panel of him with the suitcase#saying that’s the easiest money he made and ‘this vigilante thing is a breeze’#as if he didn’t pretty much do the same thing to the biggest drug lords of Gotham like five minutes ago#giving them a big scare and leaving with 40% of their millions#granted he did have to guillotine a bunch of their lieutenants but he said it himself it was only 2 hrs and he got 40%#also that second part is even funnier because he says it as if vigilantism isn’t *the only thing* he’s done pretty much his whole life#like. you boosted car parts and sold them for money to dodge the foster system. then you were robin. My fav thing about TAZ is that any aspect out of context sounds fucking bonkers.
Like, in the balance finale there's a scene in which Garfield (who is very specifically never described visually bc most people imagine him as like. The Lasagna Cat. Who in this universe is the most powerful warlock in the realm and also has a hobby of cloning people, which is great for the one character that got forced into haunting a mannequin) is summoned by an alien spaceship that runs on the power of friendship so he could beat up some flashing balls. In D&D.
And that was just. Such a normal scene in the narrative. No one blinked an eye. I would like to bow down to Griffins clear unmatched talent for making me feel such big emotions over ridiculous shit like a goddamned umbrella or a regular ass pair of jeans or the idea of a taco recipe.

As the new adaptation for another version of “Legend of the Condor Heroes” makes an appearance in 2024 (in honor of the centennial celebration of Jin Yong’s birth), I am moved to record this for myself.
Jin Yong, his Wuxia and love stories had a deep imprint on how I conceptualise love between a man and a woman, and no other pairing has managed to influence my world view as markedly and deeply as Guo Jing and Huang Rong did.
He fed me my “man feeds love interest”, “man is a major simp”, “man almost always defer to the smartness of his partner”, “man is kind and generous”, “man is a gentle protector” etc tropes to me, and I will always thank the master for letting me know an egalitarian romantic relationship is a desirable aim. Guo Jing is also one of the few male fictional characters I have continued to love over decades. Without his wonderful understanding and portrayals of noble masculinity, I think my instinctive dislike of men would be much worse 🫥
All that mush out of the way, I am looking forward to the latest adaption of this classic, though will likely just pick up the second half of the drama, when it appears the story will finally focus on GJ and HR and their arcs/journeys.
(Keeping fingers crossed it will be available on an accessible streaming platform for me)

Contents: 28, Feeling for each other in the dark. Post-villain reveal, some sort of way forward has already been found. Spoilers for Retri. Daniel has a nightmare.
28. feeling for each other in the dark
Sharing a bed is— different. You’re still not used to sharing space like this, Daniel slipping into sleep beside you, separated by a thin strip of no man’s land on the mattress.
Kind of makes you feel like— someone scraped out your insides with a melon baller, but. Hey. That’s life. Nothing settled, not quite, but unwilling to let each other go anyway. Still unsure. You don’t think you’ll get much sleep.
And you’re not wrong about that, but it’s nice anyway. The vague dream-thoughts from Daniel, slowly trying to unwind yourself from your thoughts. Counting the seconds as he inhales-exhales all sleep-slow.
It doesn’t last, though. Calm skies gather clouds, twisting and dark.
Heat and a window frame flashing past (echo your own sense-memory and you have to fight to stay away from the free-fall vertigo—) and painsharp sudden cold of plunging into water, Daniel’s nightmare spilling out and over to you, like water boiling in a pot. Or water boiling in a swimming pool.
You’re afraid to touch his mind now, don’t want his familiarity with you to twist this nightmare towards a different one, but you can reach out with your hands, touch with those. Pull him closer, into your arms. Hands curling, clutching, into your shirt, hanging on even if it hurts—
“I’ve got you,” you murmur, clumsy words, even if he can’t quite hear you right now, stroke your hand through his hair. Brush it away from where it’s gotten stuck to his forehead. Tuck him against your chest, as close as you can pull him.
The burning heat in his mind is white-hot-cold, and he’s surrounded by water but burning still—
“Daniel,” you say, a little more urgently now. Trying to wake him up. “Danny,” press your fingers to his back, not shaking him. Contact. Pressure. Motion.
A gasp, like breaking the surface of the water, when he wakes. It shifts into something that’s not-quite a sob, and his grip tightens, curling closer around you like you’re something safe, something grounding. Burying his face in your shirt.
You wrap your arms around him tighter in turn, like you could press him into that carved-empty hole in your chest and he’d be safe there, protected by your ribs. You don’t want to fight his mind, though, and you can’t protect him from memory with your arms, anyway.
“We’re in your room,” you say, voice quiet. “It’s a little past 1:30 in the morning.” Rub your hand up and down his back, for the sensation of it. You can’t reach the lamp like this, but there’s still dim light from the bathroom. “Are you with me?”
“Yeah,” he says, a shuddering breath. “I’m— yeah.”
You hold him for a few minutes, his brain shaking off sleep, reorienting himself, wary of letting himself fall back into sleep and dreaming. Thoughts turning and turning again.
“Do you want to get up for a bit?” you ask, eventually, when it’s evident he’s not falling asleep any time soon. “We can sit on the couch? I’ll make—“ not coffee it’s two in the morning and you’re hoping he, at least, manages to get more sleep. “—hot chocolate?” You think you saw little pods for that too.
You know he knows the pause was because you defaulted to coffee, and it makes him laugh, a little, so that’s alright. “That sounds good.” Pressure-curl tighter around him for just a moment, drop a kiss to the top of his head. Still a little shaky, but more solid now. Good. That’s good. You’ll find something soothing to put on the television. Something safe.
