Meghan and Harry at the royal foundation summit they had and there are a lot of foreshadowing moments. the last question is about if they disagree as a family and how they solve it. I remember watching this at the time and thinking it was just jokes, but now.. 👀👀👀 there’s also a reference to HR being a tool to use for mental help. I can see why Meghan went to them hearing this.

When I saw this for the first time I felt uncomfortable - it was like “Oh... there’s some weird tension here.” And this was right around when the first little leaks about there being problems were coming out - just the “William told Harry to wait and that pissed Harry off” conversations. So nothing huge and it seemed just like a little spat that they would get over quickly, but I do remember thinking “Oh - clearly they’re still pissed...” Although, in this regard, I will say that Harry tends to always give the better answers. In this video, for example, he said “healthy disagreements,” and in the October 2019 Africa video he said he and his brother were on different paths but they would always be brothers. Even during the Oprah video he said he loves his brother “to bits” - whereas William is fine just rolling his eyes and being like “whatever man” and making the slightly snarky/sarcastic quips.

DONʻT BE FOOLED - ITʻS ANOTHER TRICK TO BUILD THE TMT

Honolulu Civil Beat - February 25, 2012

A proposed working group that would determine the future of Mauna Kea is already creating divisions among those who both support and oppose astronomy on the mountain, among Native Hawaiian groups, and among lawmakers in the Legislature.

A joint panel of House legislators advanced resolutions Thursday morning that would form the working group. The proposals, House Resolution 33 and House Concurrent Resolution 41, now await a vote before the full 51-member House.

But it’s not yet clear that the working group, meant to bring together stakeholders in government and Hawaiian communities, will be successful in bridging divides over development on the mountain.

At a 90-minute hearing on the resolutions Thursday, lawmakers heard concerns over the composition of the group and what exactly it should accomplish. Despite those concerns, the House Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs and Water and Land committees voted to move forward with the proposals while only making technical, non-substantive amendments. Only Reps. Dale Kobayashi and Gene Ward cast no votes.

The concurrent resolution is expected to run into opposition in the Senate, where Sen. Lorraine Inouye, the chairwoman of the Water and Land Committee, has already refused to give it a hearing.

However, the working group can still move forward as long as House Resolution 33 clears the 51-member chamber, Rep. David Tarnas said.

Its support in the broader public might be tenuous, however. Some who testified on Thursday, and even some lawmakers, see the resolutions as another way to steamroll opposition to the Thirty Meter Telescope planned for construction on the summit.

“HCR 41 and HR 33 would attempt to create the illusionof inclusion while ensuring the majority of the voices will always favor the foregone conclusion of the sponsors: to promote further development,” Deborah Ward, a Big Island resident, told lawmakers.

Hawaiian Membership

The working group would consist of 15-members, including seven Native Hawaiians.

There would be one representative each from the Office of Haaiian Affairs, the Board of Land and Natural Resources, the University of Hawaii Board of Regents and the Mauna Kea Observatories. House Speaker Scott Saiki would choose three House members and a chairperson to round out the group.

Healani Sonoda-Pale, a spokeswoman for the Ka Lahui Hawaii Komike Kalaiana, also feels that the resolution would help to push forward with TMT, which stalled in 2019 and is now seeking funding from the National Science Foundation.

"We don’t see this as a way to discuss management. We see this as a backdoor into finding a way to silence kiai and to build the TMT,” Sonoda-Pale told the lawmakers. Healani Sonoda-Pale testifies during a Water, Land Hawaiian Affairs hearing at the Capitol.

However, other Hawaiian groups, even those opposed to TMT, support the idea of the working group. Those include several of the Hawaiian Civic Clubs on the Big Island. Noe

Noe Wong-Wilson, president of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Hilo, wrote in testimony to lawmakers that the process for selecting seven Hawaiian members, about half of the group’s membership, should be open and transparent.

The provision that Saiki would get to pick a majority of the members for the working group, including its Hawaiian members, has previously drawn criticism from activists.

“Failure to engage the large Native Hawaiian community in this process will contribute to the ongoing distrust and dissatisfaction for the State of Hawaii’s care of our sacred mauna and cultural resource,” Wong-Wilson wrote.

OHA also raised issues over the composition of the group. CEO Sylvia Hussey told lawmakers that lineal descendants of Hawaii island, cultural practitioners and members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I should be considered for the working group.

Astronomers Push Lease Extension

Some astronomy groups and Mauna Kea protesters like Wong-Wilson have actually found themselves on the same side on the working group. But while they might support the group, they have different goals.

The protesters and kiai, or protectors, would like to see astronomy end and TMT permanently halted. The observatories, meanwhile, hope the group can provide a path forward to get a key lease extension from the state.

Maunakea Observatories, which includes all 12 observatories operating on Mauna Kea, is among the working group’s supporters. Richard Matsuda, chief of operations for the W.M. Keck Observatory, told lawmakers that any discussion over governance should consider extension of UH’s master lease over the summit.

All the observatories operate under that master lease, which is expected to end in 2033 unless the BLNR grants UH a lease extension.

The observatories group indicated that the one seat on the 15-member working group that would represent astronomers is not enough.

The University of Hawaii wants lawmakers to define a clear objective for the working group. Greg Chun, UH’s director for Mauna Kea stewardship, was among those who called for greater Big Island representation on the working group.

Some supporters of astronomy are also divided on the issue. Thayne Currie, an astrophysicist at the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, said he finds flaws in how the resolutions are written.

The resolutions target the University of Hawaii’s management of the mountain, which has been criticized by a string of auditor reports in the 1990s as well as another evaluation in December from a consultant that found UH still has trouble reaching Native Hawaiians.

Currie thinks UH has done well in managing the mountain, and that much of the criticisms of its management should instead be levied against the state. He also doesn’t think the resolution would resolve many of the underlying issues the conflict over TMT has brought to light.

“This will not fully fund DHHL, resolve issues over Mauna Kea Access Road, or resolve issues over Hawaiian Sovereignty,” Currie said.

Proposal Advances Despite Objections

Lawmakers also have differing opinions regarding the working group and how to best move forward on Mauna Kea. A majority of state lawmakers support construction of TMT on Mauna Kea, but Rep. Dale Kobayashi is not one of them.

He sees the resolutions as just another way to push forward on astronomy development on Mauna Kea.

“If you fool me once, shame on you, if you fool me twice, shame on me,” Kobayashi said. “This is a situation where, ‘fool me hundreds of times over hundreds of years.’”

He continued: “This is for folks who woke up one day and decided to support astronomy over the wishes of people … this is just more of what we’ve been doing for hundreds of years.”

Rep. Gene Ward doesn’t see the point of continuing discussion on Mauna Kea if Hawaii has already lost TMT. Mauna Kea is still the organization’s preferred site, but the observatory has also eyed a location in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa.

“If it’s moot, we are just talking about nothing for nothing,” Ward said. Senator Lorraine Inouye debate on carbon tax in the Senate.

Other lawmakers, particularly those on the Big Island, hope it can help bridge some of the divides in their communities over the astronomy issue.

Rep. Nicole Lowen, who represents parts of West Hawaii, said the membership of the group still needs work.

“There’s not one voice of the people that’s a monolith, there’s a lot of different views on this. And there needs to be continuing work to come to some kind of consensus,” Lowen said.

HCR 41 is expected to be dead on arrival if it moves to the Senate.

Inouye already informed Tarnas and Saiki that she does not plan to give the resolution a hearing if it is referred to her committee.

“We already made a commitment to support astronomy,” Inouye said in a phone interview. She added that UH and its Board of Regents have already taken steps to improving management of the mountain.

The House still plans to forge ahead and create the working group even if the Senate does not support the proposal.

The first night I camped on the summit of Stac Pollaidh and the conditions were terrible. Total washout. After only 1 hr sleep I was seriously considering driving home. So glad I didn't and decided to hike to the top of Suilven. The weather changed and I woke up to a stunning cloud inversion the following morning. It seriously doesn't get any better.

"As Americans grapple with problems of racism and power, a newly declassified trove of White House tapes provides startling evidence of the bigotry voiced by president Richard M Nixon and Henry Kissinger, his national security adviser,” Gary Bass, professor at Princeton, wrote in an opinion piece ‘The Terrible Cost of Presidential Racism’ in The New York Times. “The full content of these tapes reveal how US policy toward South Asia under Mr Nixon was influenced by his hatred of, and sexual repulsion toward, Indians,” Bass, author of ‘The Blood Telegram: Nixon, Kissinger and a Forgotten Genocide’, writes. Richard Nixon, a Republican, was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 until 1974. Bass says that the declassified White House tapes reveal a “stunning" conversation between Nixon, Kissinger and the then White House chief of staff HR Haldeman in the Oval Office in June 1971 in which Nixon asserts in a “venomous tone” that Indian women are “undoubtedly the most unattractive women in the world." Nixon also calls Indians “most sexless”, “nothing” and “pathetic”, according to the tapes. “On 4 November 1971, during a private break from a contentious White House summit with prime minister Indira Gandhi of India — a rare woman leader at the time — the president harangued Mr Kissinger about his sexual disgust at Indians,” Bass writes. Referring to Indians, Nixon says to Kissinger "To me, they turn me off. How the hell do they turn other people on, Henry? Tell me.” Bass writes that while Kissinger’s response is inaudible in the tapes, “it did not discourage the president from his theme.” In November 1971, in the middle of a discussion about India-Pakistan tensions with Kissinger and secretary of state William Rogers, after Rogers mentioned reprimanding Indira, the president blurted, “I don’t know how they reproduce!” Bass writes in the NYT piece that while Kissinger has portrayed himself as being above the racism of the Nixon White House, the tapes show “him joining in the bigotry, though the tapes cannot determine whether he truly shared the president’s prejudices or was just pandering to him.” For instance, on 3 June, 1971, Kissinger was “indignant” at the Indians as the country sheltered millions of Bengali refugees who had fled the Pakistan Army. Kissinger blamed the Indians for causing the refugee flow and then condemned Indians as a whole, as he said, “They are a scavenging people.” At one pint, Kissinger had said Indians are “superb flatterers” and “are masters at flattery. They are masters at subtle flattery. That’s how they survived 600 years. They suck up — their great skill is to suck up to people in key positions.” Nixon had even been furious with his ambassador to India Kenneth Keating, who two days earlier had confronted Nixon and Kissinger in the Oval Office, calling Pakistan’s crackdown “almost entirely a matter of genocide.” Bass says that Nixon and Kissinger had “staunchly supported” the military regime in Pakistan as it killed hundreds of thousands of Bengalis, with 10 million refugees fleeing into neighbouring India. Voicing prejudices about Pakistanis, Kissinger had in August 1971 told Nixon that “the Pakistanis are fine people, but they are primitive in their mental structure.” He added, “They just don’t have the subtlety of the Indians.” “These emotional displays of prejudice help to explain a foreign policy debacle,” Bass says, adding that Nixon and Kissinger’s policies toward South Asia in 1971 “were not just a moral disaster but a strategic fiasco on their own Cold War terms. While Nixon and Kissinger “had some reasons to favour Pakistan, an American ally which was secretly helping to bring about their historic opening to China, their biases and emotions contributed to their excessive support for Pakistan’s murderous dictatorship throughout its atrocities,” Bass said. "For decades, Mr Nixon and Mr Kissinger have portrayed themselves as brilliant practitioners of realpolitik, running a foreign policy that dispassionately served the interests of the United States. "But these declassified White House tapes confirm a starkly different picture: racism and misogyny at the highest levels, covered up for decades under ludicrous claims of national security. A fair historical assessment of Mr Nixon and Mr Kissinger must include the full truth, unbleeped,” Bass says. In December 2012, Bass had filed a legal request for a mandatory declassification review with the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. The Nixon archivists released a few unbleeped tapes in May 2018, July 2019 and this May “after considerable wrangling”.

Patreon as Social Platform?

I was a user -- briefly -- of Patreon, the subscription-focused fan platform. I went live there the day that there announced a horribly flawed change in their payment scheme back in December of 2017, so I moved off.

But I saw a piece in Variety today where Patreon is considering acting as a 'social platform' for creators:

Patreon, the subscription-based fan platform, is eyeing a range of new services to support creators — including potentially providing loans at some point, CEO Jack Conte said.

Conte, speaking at Variety’s Entertainment & Technology Summit in L.A., said Patreon is considering ways to provide capital funding and other financial services to artists, as well as services like health insurance and HR support.

“Nobody’s building for creators right now,” Conte said. “Even [platforms] that say they’re building for creators aren’t — advertisers are their customers.”

Interesting path.

But GoldenCheetah's "Critical Power" calculation based on 3 and 20 minute "best power" efforts estimates my critical power (FTP) at 403W. FTP for training purposes following on from my 421w-for-14-minutes in a recent time trial. Something different? That clearly hasn’t happened yet either and I’m assuming that Covid got in the way of both. My interest was piqued at the time as it was being lined up for a launch to support the arrival of native Garmin Running Power. I first heard about running power being added for Garmin about a year ago and am surprised it wasn’t here sooner. What it will drive, though, is awareness for Stryd and for Running Power in general as we start to see these maps and data appearing in our feeds from those athletes we follow who are already running with power. Any runner looking at power data in more detail will probably already be using Stryd Powercenter, Golden Cheetah, Final Surge, TrainingPeaks or one of the many other sites that offer more and varied analysis features. However, I’m unconvinced the addition of running power will drive any more involvement with Strava as the analysis is very limited. Adding power zones via rFTP is hopefully on the cards too. This partly fills a glaring hole in Strava’s app that had mildly annoyed many Garmin owners, including myself, for quite some time. This should work on your treadmill workouts and on Zwift maps too.Īny watch that previously recorded ‘power’ in the standard (cycling) power field may have shown power. Sadly, the lap splits don’t show power right now. Perhaps more useful is the new section for power in the analysis tab that shows a chart as well as the training load and intensity. As there are no running power zones (yet) in Strava the variation in shade looks to be derived as a percentage of the maximum intensity of each individual workout. The route will be shaded with various hues of purple which change according to your running power intensity at the time. Now running power is an option too.Įdit your workout description and add the hashtag #POWERMAP. Your route is then shaded according to the difficulty of your effort at the time and previously you could simply use a hashtag for HR, pace, gradient and some other measures. The first thing to manually change is how the map displays the route.Ī while back, Strava added the StatMap feature which gave the ability to change the map type based on a manually added hashtag in the activity description. This feature should be available to any Strava user for workouts uploaded 10 September 2021 or later Weighted average power for the run (NP).You CAN re-load an old workout and power data shows (I did this for a run on 9 September and it worked) Your Garmin running power data isn’t displayed retrospectively and only comes from new uploads from 10th September 2021.
