Moon Landing

Shiera had never seen her son this excited about anything. At six, Hector was already a sullen, quiet child. He'd never seemed to have much interest in anything, but he had been alight since he learned about Apollo 11. It wasn't that Shiera wasn't excited in her own way about men in the moon but seeing Hector run around in a commotion (like a normal child), brought her just as much of a thrill.

Hector did another running loop around the couch, toy spaceship clutched in his hand, before he climbed up to sit with her.

"Is the TV all the way up?" He asked, staring at their set and bouncing. As if it had been turned down or off since this morning when Hector had run down from waking up to turn it on. Shiera had gone to change the channel earlier, before noon even, and Hector had insisted she keeps it so he wouldn't miss a second of a word about NASA.

He'd never seemed so invested in anything before. Certainty not her and Carter's work at the museum or even when he had found out his parents were superheroes.

"All the way up," Shiera assured him. She went to tussle his hair but the countdown to landing on the television got closer and and Hector jumped off the couch. He sat as close to the set as he knew he could get away from, holding his spaceship to his chest like a teddy.

"Daddy, shhh," Hector said at the sound of Carter's footsteps in the doorway. The boy didn't take his eyes off the broadcast.

Shiera caught her husband's eyes. They both looked at the awe on their son's face and he counted down the seconds with the broadcast under his breath. Carter went and sat down on the floor next to Hector. Hector leaned against his father, putting his spaceship in Carter's lap.

Hector gasped, grabbing Carter's arm as the footage changed from a simulation to the first footage from the moon.

"Momma, are you seeing this?" Hector said in a quiet whisper, like he was talking during a church service.

"I am, honey."

"They're on the moon," Hector glanced back just long enough to make sure Shiera was seeing what he was. The wonder on his face was almost more astounding to her than the footage. Hector looked back to the television, still clinging to Carter's arm.

There had been a light in his eyes.

Something passes over Ron’s face. From here, Scorpius can’t quite decide what it is: caution, perhaps. Wonder. 

Tension.

Albus sinks down, chin grazing the water. “It’s hot,” he adds. He wades closer to Scorpius, sliding his hands over his shoulders, kissing his temple. “You should cool off with us.”

To Scorpius’s astonishment, to his mortification, to his elation, Ron drops the spade onto the grass and tosses his t-shirt aside. 

He bends to pick the laces of his boots, pulling them off one at a time. His socks and jeans come off next, until he’s in nothing but a small pair of dark blue boxers.

Scorpius is surrounded by water, but his mouth is suddenly very dry.
