Do you think every young woman has, at one point or another, wished that they could have been a member of Hillcrest or does that apply to just a handful of us?

Love that they have Jack Benny and George Burns beside each other, I love their friendship!

So I’m the TA in a section of a Jewish Civ course this quarter (thankfully my program only makes us do 3 teaching terms just for professional formation reasons and none of our funding is dependent on it), which covers the early modern to contemporary. Today we were talking about American Jewish life from the turn of the century into the ‘60s and I don’t generally lead a lot in these classes because I’m an early modernist, but I was trying to explain Vaudeville and the cultural ubiquity of figures like Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, Georgie Jessel, Al Jolson, etc to them.

Not even a glimmer of recognition. (Although one of the kids brought up Mel Brooks, which gave me a little hope). So I guess that really is not a universal girlhood experience, odd as it seems.

I love George and Jack! There’s a very nice pic of them at Hillcrest from the late ‘60s or early ‘70s:

That friendship and his relationship with Fred Allen are my favorites.

Also, speaking of fantasies of being part of Hillcrest, I really love that Frank Sinatra, who adored Jack and threw his 80th birthday party at his compound, chose to become a member of the club when he relocated permanently to California. Even though Hillcrest was a majority Jewish club (which had come about because all of the LA gold clubs wouldn’t take Jewish members) and Frank was an Italian Catholic, he felt much more comfortable and likely to have fun there than anywhere else and I think that’s fantastic.
