❀ MAKE IT REAL | OP81
Scenario: basically ‘the winner takes all’, but oscar edition…or, the one where despite yn being the closest to oscar, no one suspects the two to be dating. that is, until a video of the pair at a valley concert comes out. (inspired by the song ‘Cure’ by Valley (bless @renarots for this one))
Pairing: oscar piastri x fem!reader
A/N: squadron, it is an oscar day. it took me entirely too long to get to this request, but i’ve finally made it. i hope you guys like this fic as much as i liked making it 🫶🏻

norrisnation im so convinced that if it’s anyone it’s danny ric 😭 how do you go to music festivals and football games together so often and NOT date
⤷ charlesrrari yes but also they don’t hang out NEARLY as much anymore? also to be fair, yn’s closest friend - oscar aside - is lando, so it’s kind of natural that she would be in the mclaren garage more, so it just SEEMS like it’s daniel? idk im not convinced that it’s him
formula44 idk i feel like lando is the only one that makes sense
⤷ papayabull what about oscar?
⤷ formula44 idk i just can’t see them together
xf1x oscar piastri (solely based on how much they’re togwther)
⤷ papayanorris lore drop: yn rejected oscar in f3 because he was too busy so id imagine it’s the same now 🤷🏻♀️
⤷ xf1x to me that makes it seem more likely since that means they were obviously interested in each other?
⤷ papayanorris good point but maybe theyve moved on? 👀
⤷ pastrypiastri okay but imagine dating oscar and he’s THAT close with another girl, and same with yn being that close with another guy? idk this thread might have put me on the ynoscar agenda 🤭
shumirrari wild guess: jenson button (if you know you know)
⤷ chilisainz what am i missing?
⤷ shumirrari basically lando and jenson button are sort of friends so lando introduced yn to jenson at a race, and lando took pictures of them together. i’m pretty sure yn posted them a while back? idk but it was just a silly guess (her and jenson would be cute though, but i highly doubt it’s them LMAO)
formulaferrari i am TIRED why does no one have faith in the oscyn agenda
⤷ formulaferrari also does no one notice that oscar always is kind of shy around yn or am i actually delusional on this one
⤷ charlesrrari wait lowkey you’re onto something rn 👀

stardustf1 okay but wasn’t oscar wearing a hoodie in the other picture that the one guy posted?
⤷ rizzciardo yes, but i’m assuming oscar took the hoodie off and gave it to yn, because not only can you see her wearing a hoodie in this picture (even though it’s blurry, it looks like the same one oscar was wearing), AND ria posted a story of her and yn goofing off after the concert where yn was wearing a black hoodie so 👀

officer!els<3
author's note - meow i love this woman.
content warnings - black!coded!reader ig????, fluff, els i love u ellie williams pls handcuff me to ur bed and police-brutalize me! , text msgs from reader that are very me-coded! , mostly just based off every grumpy but cool cop i've seen in media, lots of notes from me i'm going insane I NEED HER!!!!! , there's a white man in a pic i put... you have been warned, smut/suggestive shit at the end!
-------------------------------------------------------
- def wanted to be a cop when she was a kid and then was a total fucking juvenile as a teen. (duh!)
- always loved the police officers who barely ever gave troubled kids a hard time. (this is coming from a troubled kid. acab all the way except for u guys. well, still acab, but y'all r cool!) would refuse to talk to anyone except her favorites. i fully believe that's one of the reasons she would go into this workforce.
- when she got approved to start training to be a cop, u were home with her favorite strand of weed and she gave u a look like, "🤨🤨" , "can't be doing that no more baby, i'm gonna be a cop." , "...stfu and take the first hit before you piss me off..." , she's wearing a SHIT-eating grin before she takes it. (don't ask me how she passes her drug-tests!) (probably gets jesse to do it or someone idk maybe joel if she's lucky!) (def not joel...)
- ADDING ONTO THIS!^^ : every single time you smoke when she can't she'll look so sad or just side-eye tf out of you... "really?" , "what do you want me to do ellie..." u stopped smoking around her when she couldn't...
- this woman is so intimidating but once those cop dogs come on the scene she's so cute<3 . she's so smiley and happy they love her AND SHE LOVES THEM. she definitely sent u a picture of her with the group of the babies and was like, "can we adopt them all pls i love them ):" . you guys adopted a rescue pup shortly after...
- whenever you're doing ANYTHING EVER she flashes her badge at you and says something so loser of her , "don't make me handcuff you..." or makes finger guns with the sounds and GOD I LOVE THIS WOMAN.
- speaking of badges, she always has her badge on her. ALWAYS. it is EMBARRASSING!
- when she got her first arrest she was so happy:3 . i FEEL like she took a picture with the fucker and everything and she looked so proud of herself. "good job baby now pls get to the station before that mf breaks out of those handcuffs he looks like he's gonna murder u..."
- this is a headcannon of mine (and canon so why am i saying hc maybe it's just bcs it's more in-depth in my head.) but she loves kids and whenever she sees a younger person at the station, she makes sure that they're ok and have everything they need.
- with that being said, she HATES the teens who don't have a valid reason to be such delinquents. lovable delinquents are her soft-spot but those... THOSE ONES😧.
- definitely is a kitten-saver-cop. hates getting the call but she responds every time.
- sends u this pic anytime u say something mildly threatening to her in text msgs:
suggestive/NSFW!
-------------------------------------------------------
- the day she got her uniform, you wanted to jump her bones. she came back home, poor girl was so tired and all you could think about is how good she looked in that shit.
- like i said... the badge is with her at all times... maybe this is too feral but i feel like she put IT in ur mouth and took a polaroid of it after u were done eating her out or SSAAAWWWWMMMMTHHHIIIIING. (pls let me wear ur badge baby i'm on my knees BEGGING YOU!)
- definitely joked about role-playing jailer/jailed and then it wasn't a joke anymore. y'all tried it once and couldn't stop laughing.
- has definitely used her handcuffs on u or vice versa. she gets so excited when u pull that shit out.
- ggggg...g-g-gu-....gggggggggguuuunnn ki-
- definitely has fucked u in the uniform. u two probs have had a quickie in the station bathroom on multiple occasions.
bonus round - police!els edit<3 :

Family Fun Day
Milf!Wanda Maximoff x Reader
Since you met Wanda, you’ve been crushing on her but keeping a respectful distance. A fall family fun day might just finally bring you together
Note: Flufftober softness ahead. Enjoy!
Flufftober Masterlist, Main Masterlist
Wanda had never really dated anyone before who actually tried to form a relationship with her kids. Sure, her ex-husband has a connection with them, but no one she had seen since her divorce did. That is until she met you.
You met Wanda on a rainy afternoon at the park. It had been a beautiful day until the sky decided to weep over the little town. You saw a mother with two children running towards the canopy where you sat reading a book.
The woman didn’t have an umbrella, nor did her children. You had prepared for the possibility of a rainy day. With your umbrella in hand, you abandoned your book and ran to meet the family.
Wanda thanked you profusely for trying to keep her and her kids dry. With your own self being soaked from the rain, you told her it was no problem. She felt a connection to you. You felt it too.
After that day, Wanda kept in touch with you. You never asked her out, but you spent plenty of time with her. And with her kids. You knew that they didn’t have anything but the love they shared. And that was enough for them.
So, when the days turned colder, you decided to give them the best fall season you could imagine. You pull into Wanda’s driveway and walk to her front door.
“Hey, y/n,” Wanda greets you with a hug.
“Hey, Max. I was thinking I could take you and the boys on a secret mission,” you say so the young boys can hear you. They turn their attention towards you.
“Secret mission?” Tommy wonders.
“Yeah, buddy. It’ll be fun. What do you think?”
“Yes, please!” Billy says.
You all look at Wanda, and she nods. You step inside, and the family gets ready for the day. You tell them they need to be dressed to be outside, so they all end up in sweaters. They all pile into your car, and you drive them to the secret destination.
“Does that say pumpkin patch?” Billy asks excitedly as you pull into a parking lot.
“It does!” You confirm. “We’re going to get pumpkins and go back to the house and carve them.”
“That’s such a good idea,” Wanda says. She places her hand on your arm softly. Your heart flutters.
“Let’s go, Maximoffs,” you say.
You tell the boys and Wanda to pick pumpkins. As many as they want, of course. And the boys get two each.
“One to carve and one to leave for decoration,” Tommy explains.
“That’s a great idea, baby,” Wanda says, kissing his head.
You pick your own pumpkin and take all of them to the checkout. Wanda tries not to let you pay, but you insist. It was your idea, after all.
On the drive back to the house, you play a silly Halloween playlist. The kids laugh at your rendition of the Monster Mash. Wanda records you on her phone, not so secretly.
Back at the house, you carve the pumpkins. The boys do a great job, and so does Wanda.
“Let’s take a photo,” Wanda suggests.
“Yeah, get in there with your boys,” you say. You reach for her phone.
“I want you in one,” she says.
“I know, but you guys go first,” you reply.
Wanda relents. You take a photo of the family, and she notices you on the phone a little too long.
“What are you doing?” She asks.
“Certainly not deleting the video of me singing,” you say flatly.
“Stop. It’s cute!” Wanda shouts. She crosses the table and tries to take her phone back from you. You hold it close to you and don’t let go. Wanda tries and tries to take it.
You eventually pull her to the ground as she keeps trying to get the phone. She lands on top of you, and you feel her entire body pressing against you. It’s the closest you’ve ever been to her.
“Give it to me,” Wanda says.
“No,” you reply.
“Okay. How about we make a deal then?”
“I’m listening.”
“I kiss you, and then you give it back to me,” Wanda says. Her cheeks blush at her own words.
“Deal,” you say, trying to sound cool.
Wanda chuckles and leans down to kiss you. It’s brief, but you swear the whole world shifts. When she pulls away, you smile at her. She takes the phone and stands up. You let her help you up.
The boys are grinning when you two look at them. They know their mama will be happy with you. And they know that you will always treat them as your own.

Star Wars: Republic Commando: Hard Contact, Chapters 8 & 9
Chapter 8
"Her face was a study in blank surprise. It was also fascinating in a way he couldn't define. He had never seen a human female this close, this real. He was astonished by the dappling of small brown dots across the bridge of her nose and her cheeks, and the different strands of colors in her long, unkempt hair -- light browns, golds, even reds. And she was as thin as the locals. He could see blue veins in the backs of her hands, and she smelled different from anyone he'd ever shared space with. He wasn't sure if she was pretty or downright ugly. He just knew that she was utterly alien and utterly fascinating, as alien as a gdan or a Gurlanin. It was almost stopping him from concentrating on the job."
Despite my reaction to their first meeting, Darman/Etain is the only RepComm ship that I actually like, probably because it feels like it has actual buildup and chemistry. Ignoring Etain's actions in Triple Zero (which is a discussion for another day), I find them pretty cute.
I like the little detail that Darman doesn't know what freckles are.
Chapter 9
"There is something very touching about them. They look like soldiers; they fight like soldiers; and sometimes they even talk like soldiers. They have the finest qualities of the fighting man. But behind that is nothing -- no love, no family, no happy memory that comes from having truly lived. When I see one of these men killed, I weep more for him than for any ordinary soldier who has lived a full and normal life."
-- Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi
I was not expecting to see anything in this series involving the Jedi that isn't in some way bashing them, but this pleasantly surprised me.
Ki-Adi mentioning family is a lot sadder when you remember that he lost all three of his wives and all of his children during the war.
"Atin took a bite out of the white cube and washed it down with a gulp of water from his bottle. 'He [Kal Skirata] never trained us. Heard a lot about him.'
'Trained Fi and Darman too. Our squads were all in the same battalion.'
'We had Walon Vau.'
'That explains where you get your cheery outlook.'
'Sergeant Vau taught us the importance of planning for the worst scenario,' Atin said, all loyalty. 'And maximizing your tech. Being hard is good, being hard with superior tech is better.'
'I'll bet.'
'I'd heard everyone loved Skirata, though. Even if he was a bad-tempered drunk.'
Niner had never been drunk and he didn't even know what alcohol tasted like. 'He cared what happened to us. He was one of us, pretty much. Not just because he couldn't cope with not being in the army anymore, or had to disappear. No, he was a good man.' Niner would have given a great deal to have seen Skirata come limping through the trees right then, demanding to know what they were doing lounging around like a bunch of Kaminoan nahra artists."
Oh look, our first mention of Walon Vau, problematic-est of problematic favs. (And, indirectly, my beloved Mird.)
Knowing how Atin actually feels about Vau, Niner calling him "all loyalty" here is pretty uncomfortable.
*Flatly* I don't love Kal Skirata. I love well-written fanfics with him, I do not love him in canon.
Apparently, nahra is the Kaminoan version of ballet, in which they express emotions they usually repress. Huh.
"'Why are we scraping maps in the dirt when we've got perfectly good holocharts?'
'That's what Sergeant Skirata used to do,' Darman said. 'He didn't like holos. Too transparent. He also thought that feeling the texture of dirt focused your mind.'
'And you don't need any technology to do it.'
'He was a great believer in intuition.'"
Any time Kal Skirata has any advice or does anything that I actually like (ie, anything that doesn't make me want to strangle him), I feel honor-bound to mention it.
I have to wonder if he had to explain what dirt was to his trainees. Omega definitely had no idea what dirt was when she first left Kamino. Oh, now I have this image of him reading the dictionary definition out to a very confused group of cadets.
"Etain hesitated. She had once heard someone say that they could never remove their betrothal ring, not until they died. Her Padawan braid felt equally permanent, as if her soul was woven in with it, and that removing it after so long -- even temporarily -- would rend the fabric of the universe and underscore her belief that she was not Jedi material. But it had to be done. She unfastened the single thin braid and combed the strands of wavy hair loose with her fingers.
She felt less like a Jedi than ever, and not even remotely close to a commander."
This is one of the examples of Traviss's writing that I don't have any problem with. If she stuck more with this, instead of the Jedi-bashing and Mando-shilling, I wouldn't have so much of a problem. This passage gets Etain's situation across very well. In particular, her reluctance to remove her Padawan braid despite the circumstances reminds me of how I tend to cling to specific objects no matter the situation.
Wow, I actually don't have much to pick at with these two chapters. I suspect this will occur less and less as the series goes on, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Shameless // Fred Weasley
Summary - The gang challenges Fred and the Reader to fluster eachother after each being called shameless.
Word Count - 1.7k
I'm not gonna lie this was hot LMAOO
Fred and I were often compared to eachother. These were usually the words we were called
Outgoing
Spontaneous
Idiots
Humorous
Shameless
Pranksters
Delinquents
These were said by a mixture of people, but most knew us as best friends. I marched the halls with the twins every day, but everyone knew I was a just a little closer to Fred. There was just some connection there. A connection lots of people took out of context.
Sure, we flirted, but I flirt with a lot of people. Theres another word we were called, flirts! Though this had a good majority of my friends convinced that we were in love. It was at the point where people openly talked about it in front of us.
*"Nice ass Weasley!" I shouted as I entered the Great Hall. This drew a few eyes towards me, snickering. Fred turned around and looked to me, gesturing to his bum.*
*"Oh this old thing? Nothing compared to yours." I licked my finger and made a sizzle sound. Everyone was right, we really had no shame.*
And that's what my friends were on about at the moment. A big group of us were sitting in the Gryffindor common room. This included Harry, Hermione, Ron, the twins, Seamus, Dean, Angelina, and Ginny.
"You two flirt all the time without getting all ruffled. How do you do it?" Ginny asked.
"I don't know, it's just how we are I guess." I shrugged to Fred as I answered. He nodded in agreement.
"Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever seen either of you flustered." Dean butted in.
"I say we change that." George said with a simple nod. Fred looked at him with furrowed brows. "I say we challenge them!" It was clear that not one person in the room knew what George was on about, so he continued. "Alright see, I give them 3 days to see who can fluster who first. One of us has to see it though, to know it happened. Can the unflusterables fluster one another you think?" Georges arms were crossed at his chest cockily.
"I think that's a brilliant idea." Hermione agreed.
"That's easy, I'll totally win. I have no shame, no embarrassment." Fred announced with glee.
"We will see about that." I smiled at him with one eyebrow raised.
*Oh its on.*
After barely an hour of thinking about this whole challenge alone in my dorm, I realized that I walked myself right into failure. It wasnt that I though Fred could win, it was that I *knew* I would lose. In the way that I had never really charmed any boy. I didn't have anything up my sleeve. I was really just going to have to wing it.
That being said, Fred was quite the charmer. It was hilarious watching 1st years see him for the first time and swoon over him. Pulling girls in with simple winks and little waves across the room.
But now it was dinner time, so I see this as round one to this weird challenge George has concocted.
I made sure to make my way into the Great Hall nearly unnoticed, walking in with a sea of other students. I immediately spotted Fred and made a beeline towards him. Some of the group spotted me but said nothing, letting me go with my improvised plan.
I stood right behind Fred, reaching my hand into his hair and running my fingers though it. He turned his head slightly to see me.
"Hello love." He smiled at me sweetly. I continued, wrapping my arms around his neck lightly and leaning down so my chin was rested on his shoulder.
"You're hair is so soft." He turned his face to mine, our noses almost bumping.
"Thanks sweet cheeks." He put a small kis on my nose which made me smile, sitting next to him after.
"Nothing? Really? No blushy cheeks, or stuttered speech?" Angelina was flabbergasted clearly, her hands gesturing wildly in the air as she spoke.
"I honestly don't know if it's possible." George shrugged. "I just thought it would be interesting if it was."
"Oh I've got plans don't worry, this sexy ass will be blushing to the moon and back when I'm done with her." Fred looked down to me, smirking. He gave a challenging face.
"I know your deepest darkest secrets Weasley. Don't test me." I raised my eyebrow cockily as the whole group just stared puzzled.
"I wish I could talk to Cho like that." Harry huffed, earning a laugh from most of the group. (Aside from Ginny, who I was quick to tap her hand under the table at the comment. She had told me weeks ago how agonizing she felt.)
Later that night a good portion of the gang was hanging out in the common room again. I had just walked through the entryway and saw Fred sitting on the couch. As soon as we made eye contact he patted his lap. All heads whipped my way. I walked over and sat right on his lap, making myself comfortable. He grabbed my face lightly and put a small kiss on my jaw.
"Where were you love, we missed you." The few first years that had joined whatever conversation was going on looked as if they were going to be sick.
"Just went on a walk handsome." Everyone shook their heads with disappointed looks.
"Nothing, seriously?" Hermione laughed in disbelief. The youngins asked about the situation and it was explained to them. They all giggled about it for a while as we watched. Soon Fred was leaned very close to my ear.
"You should just give up now beautiful, you know you're going to lose." He whispered ever so lightly in my ear. I pushed his face away from mine so his ear was towards me.
"Really cute of you to think so." I whispered back. That was the last we spoke that night seeing as it was 10 pm.
I woke up the next morning hearing giggles from Hermione and Angelina. I sat up slowly, rubbing my eyes. They got very quite as they saw me waking up.
"What are you two up to?" They looked down at the books they had in their hands, ignoring me. Just then I heard our shared bathroom open, seeing Fred come out wearing only a towel hanging low on his waist. I looked him up and down with a smile. "Not bad Weasley. Working out lately?"
I would never admit it outloud, but this one almost got me. He's only in a damn towel. I mean come on, everyone found Fred attractive.
Right?
"Yeah. Maybe you can try this whole thing in my dorm later? Maybe surprise me?" He winked and left the room quickly.
"Hey! Get your arse back here, that's my towel!" The girls followed us close behind, peaking out of the door to watch us in the hallway between the rest of the dorms.
"Oh you want it back? Her you go love." He pulled it right off his body and handed it to me. I knew if I closed my eyes, or covered them, they would count it as a loss for me. So I just maintained eye contact with him and yanked it from his hands. "Nervous?" He squinted at me. Man was the boy lucky there was not one else in these halls at 6 am.
"Never." I replied with a smile and turned away, walking back into the dorm. "Nice try ladies!" I dropped the towel in our hamper and they fell back onto Hermiones bed with a loud groan.
Later that day Hermione, Fred, George, me, Dean and Seamus had free time in Care of Magical Creatures.
"He was literally naked in front of her and she didn't even blink." Mione deadpanned.
"Maybe it's because shes seen it before." Fred elbowed my side.
"You wish." I rolled my eyes.
"Maybe I do." He stared daggers into my eyes.
"At this point I feel like even if you guys made out nothing would happen." George shrugged. This gave everyone a collective evil smile.
"Oh are we doing that now?" I asked as nonchalant as possible. Even with my heart racing a mile a second. Fred looked at me with confusion. "Unless you're too pussy." That wiped the confusion off his face.
"Nope." He grabbed my face and pulled it inches from his.
"I'm just going to warn you, I've never kissed, let alone made out with, a boy before. So I apologize in advance." I laugh-whispered to him, pushing my lips onto his. I grabbed the back of his neck, pulling him closer, running my hands through his hair.
His hand traced my jaw with one hand and the other was gripped to my hair.
"Pretty good for never kissing anyone, you sure you arent lying?" He said quietly in between kisses.
"I would never lie to you." He took my open mouth as an opportunity to use his tongue and deepen the kiss. I was ready to give up at this point, this boy was unknowingly ruining me. "Would you ever lie to me?" More questions between kisses.
"Never."
"You like me don't you?" His nose bumped with mine at the question. Starting to kiss up my jaw near my ear.
"Of course love." He laughed lightly, pulling back from the kiss. We turned back to the group which was a mixture of disgust, confusion, and knowing glances.
"Seemed like a lot of whispers for just making out don't you think?" Georges arms were crossed over his chest. We both shrugged.
"Sometimes friends just make out." I admitted, which was a very obvious lie.
"So you would make out with me then?" George challenged. Fred grabbed my waist and pulled me closer to him with a glare to George.
"I think I won in a different way than anticipated." George smirked. "So are you guys going to get together or what?" Everyone nodded.
"Was that what this bullshit was about?" Fred asked loudly.
"Yeah of course. Two dimwits you are, walked right into it." Hermione shook her head. Fred grabbed my hand and squeezed it, making me blush furiously.
"I win!" He pointed to my heated cheeks.
"Shut up ares hole." I elbowed his side lightly.
"It didnt even take 3 days!" George cheered.
*Boy are we going to have some stories when we get older.*

Too Old To Ask
For Day 25: Childhood. Have some Hinata and Kawaki moments! Hope we’ll get the same from the anime/manga soon...
FFN | AO3
Kawaki picked up one of the many photos lying around the house, studying it with a great intensity.
It was so...weird. The fact that this person...the Hokage...had so many, and what was more, that everyone in these photos seemed so happy.
There was that idiot, Boruto, hanging onto the Hokage's back as a little kid, and another of the other one, Himawari, also enjoying a piggyback ride from her dad.
...Did dads usually give piggyback rides to their kids? It seemed so, what with how many pictures there were in this house depicting it. Most of them seemed to have been taken when Boruto and Himawari were younger, though.
His dad had never.
And he was nothing more than an empty vessel for Jigen.
Kawaki imagined growing up in this house. Would the Hokage have ever given him a piggyback ride if he'd asked? He had wrapped his warm arm around Kawaki's shoulder a few hours ago. His face had been pressed against the Hokage's chest...like...like...
Something stabbed at his stomach and he blinked back some dust in his eyes.
He supposed he was too old to ask now.
"Kawaki?" someone called out.
He froze and turned around slowly, cautiously, hyper-aware of the hairs standing up on the back of his neck. It was that white-eyed woman, Boruto's "kaa-chan."
He would have laughed at that if the situation wasn't so serious. What a baby. Calling his mother "kaa-chan" like he was still four years old or something.
Boruto's mother smiled warmly at him, her eyes crinkling up like she really meant it, meant the smile. The hairs on his neck slowly settled down.
Kawaki had never seen anyone smile like that. Definitely not his father or anyone in Kara. They just laughed like hyenas that had scented blood and were moving in for the kill.
"Hmmm, looking at dad's photos?" She didn't seem remotely upset at his intrusion into her house, but gazed fondly at the photos in his hand, the ones showing the Hokage in the same ceremonial dress that he'd greeted Kawaki in. "Ah, those were taken just four years ago. If you want to see dad when he was younger, I have an album, Kawaki."
Kawaki wondered why she was calling him "dad," like the Hokage was his dad too.
He decided not to think about it, but greeted her expectant look with a brief nod.
"Well, then, follow me." She held out her hand, and a memory of Jigen doing the same floated unwillingly to his mind.
But Jigen never did smile like that.
"What's your name?" he finally asked. He was not going to call her kaa-chan. He wasn't four.
(And she wasn't his mom, and the Hokage wasn't his dad.)
"Hinata," she said, still smiling kindly. "But you can call me – "
"I won't call you anything mushy and gross," he interrupted. Maybe that was...rude of him, but he needed to set his boundaries, damn it.
She actually laughed in a way that suggested she thought he was a cute toddler. "Of course not, Kawaki. You're a big boy, aren't you?"
He scowled. She laughed again.
***
"The Hokage looks stupid," Kawaki declared flatly, flipping through page after page of the album.
He was wearing a ridiculous orange jacket and sticking his tongue out in one. In another, he had, for some reason, painted his face and was striking a dramatic pose.
V-signs. Shoutiness. The other people in the photos looking either amused or annoyed, or both.
"You sound like Boruto, Kawaki." Hinata-san (was it okay to call her that?) hid her smile in her sleeve, like she thought he was being silly but didn't want to embarrass him.
"Do you really think he looks cool in this?" he asked dismissively, holding out one in which the Hokage seemed to be older, maybe around sixteen, with his arm slung around the shoulder of a dark-haired, white-eyed young man who looked a lot like Hinata-san.
Except that the dangerously blank, narrowed eyes suggested that he wanted to disembowel the Hokage (which said Hokage seemed oblivious to). "The guy in this pic looks like he wants to kill him."
Hinata-san's smile turned a bit bittersweet. She gazed at the dark-haired, white-eyed teenager, and Kawaki noted, with a jolt of alarm, that generally, people who looked that similar tended to be related, and noted with a second jolt of alarm that Hinata-san's eyes seemed to be...teary.
Another pang shot through his chest like a shard of the vase he'd broken.
He was always screwing things up in this house. He didn't understand things that were obvious.
He didn't belong.
A warm hand ruffled his hair. Kawaki blinked himself out of his daze.
"Of course he looks cool," Hinata-san commented, all traces of sadness gone. "And I wouldn't assume that Neji nii-san wanted to kill him in this photo." She turned and gently tugged the photos from his hand. "What do you say we have herring soba for dinner tonight, Kawaki? It's Neji nii-san's favorite."
"What's herring soba? Does it taste good?"
Probably. The food he'd eaten since escaping from Kara was amazing, but then, the organization had never fed him anything other than food pills and gruel in the first place.
Hinata-san patted him on the head again.
"It tastes delicious."

10 Characters I Fell in Love With in 2021
alighlaskdfjlaksdjf ok fuck. this is gonna be HARD because y’all know me you know i LOVE characters asdgihalsdkfjadslkjf. anyway THANK YOU @lasenbyphoenix for tagging me in this I love you!! and all your characters were so good!
Alright I’m going to try and only choose one per show/actor otherwise they would all be from mystic nine or william characters and I can’t do that lmao
1. Fo-ye from The Mystic Nine
Is anyone even surprised? Cause I’m sure not. this man is the love of my life and my heart’s delight and FUCK i just love him so much. is it because he’s william? yes partially. but also just because fo-ye is SUCH a good character and SO tragic about it. like this mans is the embodiment of self-sacrifice and I’m never going to be over it. he wasn’t even my favorite character from m9 at first but he has slowly taken over my heart and soul and i would legitimately do anything for more Him npss pls give us season two PLEASE anyway i’m obsessed with him goodbye
2. Choi Myung-hee from Vincenzo
I FUCKING LOVE HER and not because she’s nice because she is the WORST and MOST EVIL but because of how important she is as a character. everyone’s like “jang han-seok my poor little meow meow” and then are like “choi myung-hee >:(” like if she were a male character people would LOVE HER but she’s NOT but she’s my favorite because she is EVIL and fucked UP and absolutely UNAPOLOGETIC ABOUT IT and i genuinely love how she is written and acted and GUH. she’s stellar. everyone appreciate her NOW
3. Saya from The Arthdal Chronicles
Sayaaaaaaaaa ok half of this i think is how good song joong-ki is at acting in this drama, cause he does like. two completely different characters with his choices i fucking love him (it’s mostly in his mouth too like GOSH when are actors going to stop Fucking Me Up with their acting choices surrounding their lips), but Saya is! feral! but like? elegant about it?? idk i hope there’s more of this show coming out bc i need to see him lose it just a little bit i think that would be great for me
4. Nam Seon-ho from My Country: The New Age
hghghgnnghgngghgngnghgngn SEON-HO MY LITERAL ANGEL. BB. YOU DID NOTHING WRONG EVER. jk he absolutely did make mistakes but FUCK this character just hit every single Good Button in my book. for me, he is the perfect character. if i wrote a drama it would be like this i.e. every time someone should be angry at their Misunderstood Best Friend, the Misunderstood Best Friend just gets Covered in Blood instead. like I think that’s great. i love him i love this drama i love everything about it if you haven’t seen it yet YOU WON’T REGRET IT
5. Ding Mao from Tientsin Mystic
he is. my baby. the love of my life. my son. i would die for him. i’ve talked a lot about tientsin mystic recently and I will keep talking about it because I literally adore him and i want to scream about it. he’s so so good. so well acted. trying his best, but also ultimately blinded by his privilege and seeing him work through that is just!!!! it’s really really good i love him and his curls
6. Gu Xiang from Word of Honor
GOSH SHE FUCKS SO HARD???? damn. like. damn. i want her to kick my ass. she’s so badass and competent and feisty and i am cao weining, following her around with heart eyes. she’s so so so fun and amazing, and i want to be her when i grow up
7. Lee Jae-sun from Meow! The Secret Boy
this drama was a blast and a half but lee jae-sun my gentle boy?? he’s so SOFT in this. just. he’s the softest. he’s got the type of background that could have made him angry and aggressive but instead he’s a cute shy introvert who has a combination coffee shop/leather working studio and he handmakes crafts and loves cats and wears soft sweaters and is just a really really good man all around. just his general aesthetic makes me 🥺
8. Tang Fan from The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty
admittedly i have only seen two and a half episodes of this show but tang fan already owns my heart. i too want to be an eccentric gay foodie detective that writes erotica as my side hustle. he’s such a bitch. so high maintenance. rip his boyfriend he’s going to have his hands FULL with this one.
9. Han Ho-yeol from D.P.
i saw this actor first in Train to Busan: Peninsula, and he was great and crazy! his face is so interestingly structured! anyway i think i really like ho-yeol bc he treats his work as a job. like it’s a fun job for him, and he takes it seriously, but at the end of the day, he’s doing it because he has to, not because he feels like he’s being a hero or trying to save people. He’s just working, and would step away from the work in a second if given the opportunity, i think, which is very refreshing honestly. also he’s a little unhinged but in a good way, and i just think he’s neat
10. The Main Trio from 3 Will Be Free
3 WILL BE FREE MY BELOVED!!!! thanks to @mejomonster who clued me in on this one and finally made me watch it bc ghghghghghghh i loved it so much?? if you haven’t seen 3WBF yet, it’s free on youtube, PLEASE watch it. Anyway i went into this one expecting Shin to be my favorite and I loved him but Neo and Miw also own my heart? they’re all such different characters and so multi-faceted but so well written and acted and they break my heart and put it back together again, and I don’t think any of them are nearly as good without the other two. like??? shit. find me a better canon polycule (you can’t bc they don’t exist ahahahahahahahahaha :/) anyway i couldn’t choose just one of them bc i love them all and they are inseparable :)
ONCE AGAIN THANKS TO LASEN!!! THIS WAS SO FUN AND I LOVED IT! I am tagging @highpriestessofjogan, @pissmeoffanddie, @psychic-waffles, @bimingjue, and @rose-nebulijia, cause I wanna see what your favorite characters were!!! <3
#characters#brigid watches stuff#im not going to tag all of these fandoms cause there's a lot of them#tag game#blood tw#for the first pic

Chapter 12
Masterlist
Kumi stood at the kitchen sink, the sound of the running water over the dishes she was attempting to wash barely registering in her head. It wasn’t that she was thinking about anything else - the activity was mindless for her and her head was nearly blank. She stared outside the closed window above the kitchen sink, her hands still moving deftly as she rinsed plate after plate and set them aside to dry.
Outside was quiet and tonight, the sky was particularly bright and starry, and Kumi decided she liked living here.
The rural town, a drive out from bustling Kyoto, was quite peaceful, and while her and her grandmother lived in a more isolated region with the next house being at least a ten minute walk away, it wasn’t truly the countryside proper. She was thankful for this, once she’d awoken from her depressive episode where she’d lacked the will to even argue when her parents sent her away. The kids at school did look at her a little funny, few of them having seen a hafu before, but there wasn’t much difference from the behavior of the kids in Tokyo after a while.
Kumi also found that her initially stern looking grandmother was possibly the sweetest woman alive, pale as her mother and much smaller in height and frame as her. The old woman was also a very good listener and had been patient enough to hear her out once Kumi finally decided to talk, in sharp contrast with her parents who were now terrified to say anything, especially after her father had only said the wrong things initially.
Things were getting better, in some fashion. Kaksi had stopped calling her weeks ago so the guilt she felt any time she avoided the line was eased. She had almost lost her resolve when even Mitsuya called, but she was determined that the best way to heal would be to avoid anyone from back then. She longed to talk to Kaksi however, and she knew there was no one she’d meet that could replace that bond at her new school.
She was almost finished with her task when she noticed a small cockroach running along the outside of the windowsill, trying to make its way inside, attempting to shield itself from the growing winter cold. She found herself pausing and staring, not in fear but in fascination, until a memory came to mind.
“If you’re gonna ride on my bike, you’ll need to address it properly.” Baji told Kumi, matter-of-factly, crossing his arms over his chest but with a grin on his face.
“This is an inanimate object,” Kumi said, pressing her lips together. All she wanted was a ride home, and she’d already convinced herself that getting on this boy’s bike wouldn’t immediately cause her death but now that he was being silly about it, she was starting to have second thoughts. Maybe walking alone wouldn’t be so bad.
“Yeah, but it also has a name. Goki, like Gokiburi, you know.” He said, hopping over it with one leg, and letting it tilt. “If you’re gonna get on, you have to say ‘ Good evening, Gokiburi-san’ first, and then we can go to your house.”
Kumi readjusted her bookbag, looking at the space behind him on the bike, then at him. She shrugged.
“Go-ki-bu-ri?” she pronounced carefully, looking at him for approval and he nodded. She repeated the words he’d asked her to say with a bow, and Baji stifled a laugh.
She pouted.
“Hey, did you make me say something stupid?”
“No, of course not,” he replied, reaching out a hand behind him to help her up. It was her first time on his bike, and she did find that her heart pounded once she’d settled onto the seat.
“Please go slowly,” she pleaded, and he rolled his eyes.
“Fine.”
Kumi tried to resist the urge to cling to the boy too hard once the engine started, anticipating that he’d speed off to scare her, but instead he was considerate, moving slowly in the direction of her place. Once her heart rate slowed to normal, she felt the need to start a conversation, and she said the name again.
“Go-ki-bu-ri. Gokiburi. Goki… buri.”
“Huh?” Baji asked, eyes still facing the front.
“It sounds cute,” she admitted, with a chuckle.
He laughed.
“Oh really? Now that I think of it, it reminds me of you.”
Baji’s back tensed, perhaps anticipating a slap, but Kumi’s cheeks warmed up instead. She had no idea what a gokiburi was, and Baji only realized once she grew quiet and they’d arrived at her place that she had no understanding of the mean joke he had just made.
His own cheeks reddened, once she thanked him sincerely for the ride, flustered once he realized she’d taken his roast as a compliment. He didn’t have the heart to explain himself now, especially when it occurred to him that she was pretty when she smiled.
“I… uh, no problem!”
It was only the next day when Kaksi said bluntly, “he said you looked like a cockroach,” that he received that slap for real.
Kumi continued to watch the cockroach march along, until it was out of view, unsure whether to smile or cry.
---
As the end of her last year in middle school approached, Kaksi figured that she had no use in making new friends, so she drowned her troubles with studying, doing her best to enter a high school where she would be sure she’ll never see any Toman member again. Unfortunately, that was not what she truly desired.
Kaksi wanted her friends back - she wanted Baji to push her a little too hard when they would fight, she wanted Kumi to give her that annoyed look when she would tease her too much, she wanted to hear Mikey laugh and smile with his eyes and she wanted Kazutora to push her gently when she wanted to play on the swings nearby.
These were the thoughts that plagued her mind each time she would find herself crying by herself. She knew she wouldn’t feel this way forever, however. Nothing lasted, after all. She had learned that fact rather brutally. Yet sometimes it felt like none of her wounds were healing and one of the people she missed the most taunted her.
If there was someone that she had trouble imagining her life without, it would be Kazutora. Having known him since childhood, Kaksi figured he would always be by her side but she had been wrong and while his absence hurt, she had started to get used to it. Her most recent good memories with Kazutora dating back to before Shinichiro’s death, she couldn’t ignore the gap that was separating them anymore.
Kaksi would keep her promise and welcome Kazutora back in ten years, but the one that she wanted to see right now was Mikey. She felt a little guilty at that realization but there was no escaping those emotions anymore. While Kazutora was gone, it was Mikey that would have her on the back of his bike, it was him that would listen to her talk and it was him that made her laugh and while she was sorry that it had appeared to him that he was Kazutora’s placeholder, he was so much more than that.
She wished he knew that, she wished he believed that. Even though she had spent most of her time burying this love, Kaksi could never pretend like Mikey meant nothing to her. Sometimes she wondered what would have happened if she had returned Mikey’s feelings because she did love him so much, she hoped he would come back to her one day.
Unfortunately, she never saw his CB250T in front of her apartment block again or his face. Faster than she had anticipated she had graduated middle school and was getting ready to start a new chapter of her life. She was satisfied with the high school she was able to enter, she couldn’t be sure that she wouldn’t see any familiar faces until her first day but she figured that even if she did she could ignore them.
Once she had started school again, she was relieved to not have seen any Toman member she had ever been close to and had decided it was time for her to make new friends. But that turned out to be way harder than anticipated when only one week into the school year, rumors had started to spread about her boyfriend.
The worst thing about what she would hear was that it was too close to the truth for her to even argue. So she kept quiet when girls would mutter about Kazutora’s crimes whenever they saw Kaksi’s face. She did manage to always get paired up with someone when group work was unavoidable but she quickly learned that those who paid attention to her only cared about the grades she could earn them.
It was lonely but not that bad Kaksi convinced herself. By the middle of the school year, no one would look at her in contempt when she would have lunch by herself and that felt good enough. Those she would be nice to also started returning the favour and while she didn’t exactly have any friends, it started to be more bearable. Now she did still wonder about how Kumi, Chifuyu and Mikey were doing but she doubted her memory would ever erase any of the people she had loved and still loved and she was fine with that, most days.
There was one time though that she started sobbing uncontrollably. Frustrated by her homework, Kaksi had hurriedly and violently started to empty her desk’s drawers, looking for an old lesson she swore she had kept somewhere. Instead of what she was looking for, it was old pictures that had slipped from the pages of one of the many unused journals she owned. She had sighed picking them up without initially realizing what they were.
Once her brown eyes had focused on the faces printed on the paper, she wasn’t able to stop her tears. She wanted to smile, those pictures represented happy memories, after all, but she only grew nostalgic looking at Kumi’s cute smile, Mikey’s grimace, Baji’s frown and all the other Toman members she had once called her friends’ faces.
Once she had calmed herself down she had put those pictures away safely, somewhere it wouldn’t be disturbed again. Then she had gotten back to her math problem, tears all dried up. She still missed her friends and she wondered if they did too but maybe she was having a harder time moving on than they were, she wasn’t sure.
Either way, time always proved to be the solution to what she felt and suddenly she had finished her first year of high school. Things were moving by quickly and Kaksi had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted to do. She would be going to college after graduating and studying psychology, hoping she could pursue a career in that field eventually.
Her second year of high school seemed to be more interesting than the first one and she found it funny to discover all those new faces as the first years appeared. She wondered if what was told about her would spread to them too, she was unsure and she didn’t really care, having confirmed to quite a few people that her boyfriend was in fact in jail and they should probably not stay close to her (jokingly, although everyone took her seriously).
One person, however, started having lunch at her table every day. Kaksi assumed she was a first-year, not having seen her face before. She had wide blue eyes and white medium length hair. She was also much shorter than Kaksi and while she looked intimidating, it only made her prettier to Kaksi.
She hadn’t expected the girl to ever talk to her and especially not to say what she did, but Kaksi would learn fast that this new face was full of surprises.
“I love your hairstyle,” she said with a smile, the serious facade she wore seconds ago completely disappearing.
Kaksi’s eyes widened slightly. While they looked nothing alike, the girl had a very similar smile to Mikey’s.
“Thanks.”
“You should bring me with you next time you cut your hair,” she added, cheerfully.
Kaksi chuckled but agreed, having just met Senju Akashi.
---
Senju knew what loneliness felt like, being in the position she was in from such a young age she figured being close to anyone could only bring her trouble. So she spent her time with her brother and older men that shared her objectives. Still, she remained a fifteen year old even though she was on her way to be the leader of a growing gang very soon.
This was why when she noticed Kaksi wandering the hallways by herself and eating alone, her curiosity was picked. Senju didn’t want to ask her if the rumours were true but as they made a habit of sharing lunch together she eventually learned a few things about Kaksi.
From the way she subtly clung to her, Senju could tell she had been longing for someone to talk to and so did Senju. Yet there was a certain distance she wanted to keep with her new friend, not because she didn’t want her to get closer but rather because she didn’t want her to get hurt. It felt strange to Senju how quickly she found herself caring about the brunette.
“I can help you with this if you want,” Kaksi suggested, looking at the biology lesson Senju failed to understand despite reading and rereading.
“You’re a savior! Are you free this afternoon after school?”
Kaksi was about to agree when she remembered she had cram school on Wednesday afternoons. She shook her head.
“But I could pass by your place once I’m done,” she told her.
This wouldn’t do. Senju refused politely, making up a quick excuse but Kaksi pointed out regardless that her test was tomorrow morning and if she wanted help last minute this was her only solution. The brunette wouldn’t have insisted if this was the first time Senju had been reticent about having Kaksi over at her place. She didn’t know anything about the Akashi household after all, but Senju had a strange presence.
She was skilled at getting close to Kaksi just enough for her to not doubt their friendship but she was also distant enough that Kaksi started to wonder if maybe she was misinterpreting something. Despite anticipating that asking Senju to come over to her place instead wouldn’t change anything she asked her regardless but all that she earned was another excuse as well as her friend suddenly remembering she had something urgent to pick up now.
Kaksi sighed, left alone, watching the short girl walk away. Ever since they had met, Senju wouldn’t leave her alone but the minute she would want to see her in other settings than school, her friend would grow distant. Now that she thought about it, Senju never actually went to the hairdresser with Kaksi, she went by herself and had told her she had done it on a whim.
This had bothered Kaksi enough to notice it but she decided to stay quiet. Senju was still the light that had emerged in the darkness that was Kaksi’s loneliness and if she desired to keep her at a distance for a moment then so be it. Besides, this took nothing away from the joys of having someone to count on again.
---
“I figured you were too pretty to be single,” Senju told her, nonchalantly. “But I did not expect any of the things you told me.”
They both laughed, back rested against the wall of one of the high school buildings.
“I guess that was a lot for middle schoolers,” Kaksi said, with a sad smile, the memories of what she had just explained to Senju still haunting her.
Senju’s blue eyes stared at her friend for a moment. She felt bad for what Kaksi had to endure but she felt even worse for hiding what she kept. For someone who had paid the price of knowing people this involved in the sad reality of what it meant to be a delinquent, it felt unfair to Senju to ever think about telling Kaksi the truth about who she was.
She wondered what her friend would think if she was to find out, she would probably be terrified and angry but Senju had no intention of ever leaving Kaksi. She would escape death just to be able to laugh and share snacks with her.
Senju’s hand found Kaksi’s cold one and held it gently before resting her head against her shoulder.
“I can’t believe you had to deal with all that.”
“I’m sorry,” Kaksi said, with a small smile. “This got depressing really fast.”
She was surprised that talking about the events that had unfolded almost two years ago didn’t make her cry. Back then it felt like overcoming her feelings were impossible but so many things had changed since. Still, Kaksi could never pretend that her scars didn’t hurt anymore but having met Senju she felt like maybe it was time for her to finally move on.
Senju didn’t say anything, getting up instead and extending her arms to help Kaksi stand up too.
“Let’s go get boba after school,” Senju suggested, smiling and holding both of Kaksi’s hands. “My treat after making you sad.”
Kaksi’s eyes widened slightly, this was the first time Senju had proposed meeting outside of school.
“Sure,” she agreed, smiling back and excited to see her after class.
This was something Senju had wanted to avoid, the fear of involving people she cared about with her life as a gang leader and she should have felt bad for putting Kaksi at risk even if it was a little bit but she just wanted a friend so badly. She wanted to go to the movies with Kaksi, go shopping with her, try new restaurants with her and have sleepovers with her. Those were all normal things Senju desired and for the first time, someone could give it to her and not just anyone.
Kaksi could feel her cold hands getting warmer thanks to Senju’s. They parted ways as the bell rang but soon they were reunited again and as they walked down the streets together, Senju found it to be incredibly addictive, maybe as much as Kaksi did too, hand in hers again as if she never left and never would.
---
It was endearing to watch but it remained bittersweet. When Mikey chanced upon the girl he used to love, three years after telling her he didn’t want her in his life anymore, he felt a strange sensation. His heart, which barely ever manifested now, fluttered for the first time in a while, reminding him that despite his feelings fading with time, some things would permanently leave their traces on him.
Kaksi had changed slightly, her hair appeared wavier with new bangs which Mikey thought suited her. She also looked a little more mature and he wondered if she’d grown taller too. He couldn’t be sure as he watched her sitting on the terrace of a coffee shop with an unfamiliar person who he assumed was her friend.
Her smile remained the same as she laughed at what the white haired-girl in front of her said. Mikey knew he should probably not stand there and stare but he couldn’t help it. It had been so long since he had seen her and the memory of her had never disappeared, remaining in the back of his mind.
He wasn’t sure if she had stopped talking to the other Toman members she used to be close with since Mikey would never talk about her but he figured she did. He had stopped seeing her pretty abruptly after all and he wasn’t even sure what her plans would be once she would graduate high school at the end of the school year.
He felt a little jealous about her friend, whoever this girl was she made Kaksi happy, happier than he had ever done. This was what he wished for, for her to move on from the troubles he could only bring to her. So he was relieved that after all, he did manage to keep her safe. Even though it hurt to know he could never be someone important in her life again.
Things had changed for the worst for Mikey but they had changed for the best for Kaksi and while he still missed her terribly he knew things were better this way. Even if Mikey would remain a bystander in her life forever it didn’t matter as long as she was happy and safe. Little did Mikey know though that trouble could never stay too further away from Kaksi.
So it was without knowing who was Kaksi’s innocent friend that Mikey walked away eventually, not sure he would ever see her again but hoping he would not, as staying away from him was more of a blessing than anything else. Then when he was gone it felt like his heart had grown cold once again.
Senju clenched her knuckles, sitting on the couch of the room she used as her office when she needed to talk business with her clients. She had been careless and she wondered what her next move should be. Her brother sat next to her, taking a sip of whiskey from the cold glass in his hands. He didn’t say anything, knowing that pointing out his little sister’s mistakes now would anger her more than anything.
“She’s just my friend,” she said, talking to herself, more than to Takeomi. “She has no business with any of this.”
“But she would have been a good target if you hadn’t anticipated this.”
Senju chuckled but rage overtook her. Whoever they were, this person that thought targeting Kaksi as revenge for whatever dirty business Brahman was involved, they were fucking stupid and would be easy work for Senju. Still, this entire situation was not supposed to happen at all. She knew that trying to rival Toman and having Brahman endorse various crimes would earn her many enemies but still, she had hoped no one would ever think about hurting the one she loved.
She was going to keep Kaksi safe and had already tightened her security but this still didn’t solve her main issue. Senju needed to tell her the truth. She had thought about it for a long time, and as her guilt built up and her fear increased she had found herself going out of her way to protect her, and this was exactly how she had come to learn someone thought of Kaksi as an easy target.
While Senju was confident that this would not happen again, she knew she had been selfish and if she had been any less careful, this could have cost her the life of an innocent person she cared deeply about. It was sickening, to say the least, and she realised it was terribly unfair to Kaksi. Senju was almost sure that once her secret would be unveiled that Kaksi would understandably part ways with her.
Her friend would be starting college soon anyways she thought, maybe this was the right time to tell her. Senju hoped that not seeing Kaksi would make it easier for her to move on once she would decide a relationship wasn’t worth continuing with her. This brought tears to her eyes as she barely slept that night but she couldn’t lie to her best friend forever.
---
“So you lied to me?” Kaksi barked at her.
The truth that Senju had just revealed to her on this Thursday afternoon felt like another knife sinking in her heart. Not only was her friend lying to her ever since they had met but she was also the head of an infamous gang, competing with Toman in the underground world.
“I was just trying to protect you.”
This was another lie. No, Senju had just been selfish and they both knew it.
“You knew how badly I needed to get away from all this,” Kaksi said, her brown eyes filled with tears.
She was right but Senju hadn’t anticipated that she would have grown that attached to this girl she meant to only share lunch with. By the time Kaksi had told her about her painful past they were already too close for Senju to even imagine how she would feel if she was to lose her.
“I’m sorry,” was all Senju could say as she watched her friend cry for the first time. “I fucked up.”
Kaksi stayed quiet for a moment. She couldn’t believe that even after all this time she could never really get rid of the ghosts of her past. No matter who she loved they always somehow found themselves involved in things Kaksi could never control. She didn’t want to try to understand why a person as kind and sweet as Senju would spend her life covered in blood.
There were a hundred peer-reviewed papers on the risks of delinquency she could easily dig up if she wanted to but as she was faced with her best friend’s betrayal she decided that it didn’t matter. Whatever reasons Senju would give her, it would never make up for her broken trust and heart. So, filled with anger and sadness, she asked the girl to never speak to her again.
Senju didn’t even want to argue with her; these were the expected consequences of her mistakes. So she left without a word, closing Kaksi’s door behind her, a few tears rolling down her cheeks. She wished that things were less complicated but as Brahman’s leader, this wasn’t a position she wanted to leave. She had grown up thinking that it was normal to live against the laws. She wished she could blame Takeomi for raising her this way but Senju knew she could only blame herself.
Kaksi and her were far too different after all and she didn’t want her friend to understand her, she didn’t think there was anything to understand. While it hurt to walk away from the only person she could say she trusted entirely with her heart and soul, there wasn’t anything she could do except comply with Kaksi’s wishes and not hold onto the past years spent by her side.
---
As usual, Kaksi found that drowning her troubles with keeping her mind busy worked. Not spending any more time with Senju she used her free time to study harder as the anxiety of graduation approached along with the tiring process she would have to go through to be accepted into one of the universities she wished to enter.
As she went through her notes for the hundredth time she wondered why even Senju would bother with school if she planned on spending her life making money through drugs, assault and prostitution. She doubted she would ever get an answer and she realised it didn’t really matter, she didn’t think she knew or understood Senju that much after all.
She missed her though and she loved her, so much that she wondered how bad morally it would be to make up with her and how dangerous exactly was it to stay in her close circle. This was all irrational thinking, she knew and she would benefit a lot if she used that energy to learn her physics lesson instead but Kaksi was tired of losing people she cared about.
Which was worse? Dying prematurely but surrounded by the people she loved or dying old but lonely? She wanted to believe that it was bad luck that had her meet the wrong people but what if she just could never run away from what she longed to escape? Maybe Kumi had made the right decision leaving Tokyo and maybe she should do the same but leaving was unlike her, wasn’t it?
She knew she was wrong for thinking this way but how would Senju ever move on from all this if no outside forces pulled her out of it? Kaksi was aware that wanting to stay by Senju’s side hoping that she would leave behind the path she had currently chosen was a waste of time but she was an idealist and way more optimistic than she thought she was.
Or maybe loneliness was that scary, she didn’t really know. What she did know though was that Senju wanted her by her side, unlike everyone else she had never wanted to leave her behind. Even if it was selfish in a way, it felt good to know that someone needed Kaksi as much as she needed them. Still hesitant, she gave the situation more thought.
Senju felt like she couldn’t even look at Kaksi when she walked down the hallways and the fact that the girl would pass by as if she had never even known her made it all the more painful. Both of them sat by themselves and ate lunch separately again. They both realized their separation was dreadfully obvious since multiple people would ask them why they weren’t seen together anymore.
Kaksi would tell them this was none of their business while Senju told them to get lost. Soon she started wondering why she even bothered attending high school anymore - she had already chosen the path she would be taking as early as her first year and if Kaksi wasn’t going to help her out with her biology classes then she had no interest in spending any more time around these people.
She wondered if Kaksi would care if she dropped out of high school now but she realised she should not think about her friend at all. Even though it was impossible when she would see her face every day. So she made her decision and stopped attending school. Once Kaksi noticed, she worried about Senju but she figured this was none of her business. Part of her was scared that something bad had happened and she thought about texting her but she figured that if that was the case, she would rather not know.
They both ached from the separation regardless. Senju felt like she was always on edge and all the little things that once brought her joy became boring to her but that might have been because Kaksi made everything better. Senju was shocked by all the pieces of herself that Kaksi had left in her life.
As Senju brushed her hair while getting ready to sleep, she found the cherry-scented lip balm Kaksi wore hidden in the drawer of her vanity. She picked it up and smiled before applying it to her lips, she ran her tongue over them slowly, enjoying the sweet taste. It tasted better on Kaksi’s lips though, she remembered. The memory saddened her and yet she couldn’t help thinking about her first sleepover at Kaksi’s place.
Only the orange light from the lamp on her bedside table was on as they laid next to each other in bed. They had started play-fighting when Kaksi touched Senju’s bare legs with her cold feet but being much stronger than her friend Senju had managed to overpower her and remained on top, hugging her tightly instead.
She remembered they had talked about nothing and everything while she listened to her heartbeat. Back then Kaksi had thought she had never held another girl this close to her, even when she would hug Kumi it felt different but maybe it was because she was a few years older now, she didn’t really know. What she did know was that it was enjoyable.
Eventually, Senju had gotten slightly annoyed when Kaksi mentioned Kazutora again, but she figured it was normal to feel that way about him considering how he had hurt Kaksi and that despite that she had promised to wait for him until his sentence would be over. She didn’t say anything though, instead listening to her friend’s soft voice.
“I guess I’ll just have to wait until Kazutora’s out,” she had said.
Senju had rolled her eyes at that sentence, thankful that Kaksi couldn’t see her expression from the position they were in.
“You’re seriously not going to date or do anything at all with anyone until he’s out?” Senju had asked, hiding her annoyance as best as she could.
“I guess so.”
“You know seven years is a long time and there’s a lot of cute guys out there to make out with.”
Kaksi had chuckled then.
“Kazutora’s cuter,” she had joked.
“As cute as me?” Senju had asked teasingly, looking up at Kaksi this time.
“Okay, maybe not as cute as you but unlike him, you don’t want to kiss me.”
“Who said that?” Senju had replied, thinking she wouldn’t mind if they kissed once or maybe more now than she thought about it again.
It wasn’t visible but that comment had the heat spread over Kaksi’s features and as much as she wanted to ignore it she knew this was not a response she would have towards any of her friends, no this feeling was too familiar. Kaksi hadn’t said anything and Senju thought she should be filling the silence.
“I’ll kiss you if you want,” she told her, smiling.
And so they kissed. It was Senju’s first, slow and soft. Her lips pressed against Kaksi’s shyly and she worried for a second about how she would feel if her friend pulled away but she didn’t. Kaksi’s hand held Senju’s face instead and she kissed her back tenderly, her tongue meeting hers soon. This wasn’t an innocent kiss, both of them knew but never addressed it. They didn’t have to, they were as close as ever and cared about each other.
They hadn’t kissed again after that night though Senju wished they had, she wasn’t sure Kaksi did, however. Despite that moment they had shared, she would still talk about Kazutora and all the plans she had for the two of them. Senju hadn’t expected her to forget Kazutora after one kiss but she wished Kaksi was a little more realistic sometimes.
But it didn’t matter anymore, Kazutora was more likely to kiss Kaksi than Senju would ever again now and that thought sickened her. Senju rolled over under her bedsheets and considered she should get rid of the small things that reminded her of Kaksi. Even though she wasn’t sure this would help in any way.
---
The spring of the year 2008 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Kaksi’s life. As she woke up by herself in her newly rented apartment, a few minutes from her campus she wondered how Kumi was doing. She had stopped trying to reach her years ago but not thinking about her was almost impossible. She should be a college freshman like her now, probably attending a prestigious university.
For a moment Kaksi wondered if Kumi would ever return to Tokyo and if she had made the right decision not following through with her college applications to other parts of Japan. Despite the fresh smell of change and flowers blooming outside, she couldn’t help feeling like she was heading nowhere.
Kaksi hadn’t talked to Senju in months and she wondered if moving out from her parents' house had been a good idea after all as the weight of loneliness never really disappeared. She quickly got invested in her classes though, finding her field of study very interesting and fulfilling although she did struggle a little bit with adapting to her new lifestyle. She did not make any friends that semester, finding the number of people attending her classes a little too intimidating but maybe she was just too fragile still to try again.
On her way back home one afternoon she had decided to treat herself to coffee and some pastries, heading to the nearest bakery. It was a pet shop however that had caught her attention while she made her way over there. She stared through the glass windows and smiled at the sight of a few puppies, energetically playing with each other.
“An archaeologist?” he asked. “What even is that?”
Kazutora chuckled as a frown appeared on Kaksi’s face.
“Are you serious?” she asked, disappointed by Baji’s answer. “It’s a scientist who studies history by digging up human remains and artefacts.”
“Boring!” he complained, rolling his eyes at her. “Sounds like something you would enjoy.”
Kaksi’s eyes widened slightly before hitting his arm but Baji laughed as a response.
“Well I want to be a pet shop owner!” he said with a wide smile. “Pets love me. What about you, Kazutora?”
Kazutora stayed quiet for a moment, realizing he had never really thought about that question before.
“I don’t know.”
“You should work at my pet shop then!” Baji suggested excitedly as if he had been suddenly struck by the greatest idea.
Kazutora laughed.
“Seems like a good plan.”
Kaksi’s eyes filled with tears as the memory replayed in her mind and she decided it was time for her to move. She barely ate the chocolate muffin she had bought and drank her coffee once it was completely cold once she was home. It had been a long time since she had seen Baji and Kazutora but not long enough for her to contain her feelings it seemed.
She should pay Baji a visit, she decided. She would go tomorrow afternoon with some flowers. The last time she had visited his grave was on his birthday last year but she figured she should tell him that after all, she had decided to not pursue her studies with the goal of becoming an archaeologist. It was a little sad how the three of them would not achieve what they had talked about back when the days were simpler.
---
Kaksi was happy to see Baji’s grave wasn’t without flowers when she arrived. Even though they were dried up now, it seemed like someone had dropped him some not too long ago. She placed the new ones she had just bought over the dead ones and sat in front of his grave, a sad smile on her lips. As she usually did when she visited, Kaksi talked to Baji.
“I started college,” she told him. “I decided I’d study psychology though not anthropology.”
She paused for a moment as if she was waiting for an answer.
“I’m not sure you would find this less boring though,” she joked, smiling.
Kaksi filled the silence with a few more sentences and stopped once tears started rolling down her cheeks. She dried them off quickly before standing up and bidding goodbye to Baji. She really could never seem to stop crying when she would come to visit him. She left with a smile regardless but it faded quickly once her eyes landed on the man heading in her direction only a few meters away.
His green eyes widened at the sight of Kaksi and he stopped in his tracks. He didn’t think he would see her here or at all. Both of them stared at each other for a moment before breaking eye contact and starting to walk again in the direction they were headed. Chifuyu wondered if he should stop and talk to her as he approached and the same question clouded her mind.
They had both subconsciously agreed to stop midway between Baji’s grave and the exit of the cemetery. Chifuyu was hesitant to speak but he gave her a small smile. She had changed, he had noticed. She looked healthy but he couldn’t tell if she was happy or not, her brown eyes unreadable to him. Kaksi wanted to compliment his own hairstyle change but she didn’t say anything except for a polite greeting.
“It’s been a while,” Kaksi added, hesitant.
“Yeah.”
Chifuyu rubbed the back of his neck nervously. He hoped she was doing good but he didn’t think it would be wise to catch up with Kaksi.
“I hope you’re doing well, Chifuyu,” she said with a little smile, not waiting for his answer before walking away.
He murmured a little thanks and you too and even though he wanted to talk to her, Chifuyu walked towards Baji’s grave instead. Kaksi could feel a new wave of tears washing over her and she decided to sit on an empty bench she had spotted on her way home. She missed all of them so much still and the fear of never getting over these feelings took over her once again.
At that moment she knew what she had to do. She needed to see her again, she didn’t think she could stand eating by herself again tonight. Kaksi took out her phone and dialled Senju’s number. When Kaksi’s named appeared on her screen, Senju almost dropped her phone. She picked up as quickly as she could and wondered if she was dreaming for a moment. She didn’t excuse herself as she ran out of her office, leaving her brother behind.
“Kaksi?” she said, in a small voice.
She could hear the girl sniffle at the other end of the line and Senju worried for a moment.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Kaksi replied, her voice trembling. “I just miss you.”
Senju’s blue eyes automatically filled with tears at those words.
“I miss you too.”
Kaksi smiled.
“Do you think we could meet soon?”
“We can meet now,” Senju replied. “Where are you?”
The brunette chuckled before sharing her location with her friend. Senju didn’t think twice before heading out to meet Kaksi. So she did miss Senju as much as she missed her but was that really enough for her to be forgiven? Senju was scared that her friend had only called her in a moment of weakness and she would lose her again somehow but as she appeared at the crossroads where Kaksi stood she figured it didn’t matter if she could be reunited with her even for a short moment.
Her friend smiled at her, her nose and eyes still red from crying. Senju walked over to her as quickly as she could and it was arms wide open that she welcomed her, embracing her tightly. Senju held her just as tightly, her face resting against her chest. They stood on the sidewalk like this for a moment. Then as Kaksi was reminded of how comforting Senju’s warmth felt, she decided she couldn’t afford to lose her again.

a sweet ride ↠ yang jeongin
genre: bad boy!jeongin, high school au, fluff word count: 3.5k warnings: swearing, mention of smoking & underage alcohol consumption, almost suggestive request: yes (yangomangos, prompt included: “Don’t cry.”) a/n: this one’s for the jeongin enthusiasts~
✧ masterlist & tag list info in bio ✧
↠↞
every morning as you wait outside your high school for classes to start
you hear the thunder of his motorcycle
it’s loud, mildly obnoxious, and occasionally spits out fumes
but you don’t care
you actually like the sound of the bike and how the vibrations rumble in ur chest
it’s a sleek black and built almost entirely by him: old chassis, long handle bars, and a satisfying growl as the engine ignites
if you stand too close when he pulls up in the parking lot in the morning, you can feel the vibrations coming through the pavement
(your mum would probably lock you in a tower only a knight could enter if she ever found out you’d been on a motorcycle
…..not that you’d been on one
yet (゚▽゚`*)? )
the owner of that motorcycle is your high school’s one and only bad boy
♡・。.:*.゚yang jeongin ゚.*:.。・♡
(but please call him “I.N.” because he’s actually out of the preppy, popular crowd ( `^´ ) )
he could ride that motorcycle straight through your heart and you wouldn’t care
okay maybe not your heart bc that would hurt (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )
but definitely through your bedroom
that would be
f i n e (⊙‿⊙✿)
……….
all your friends cover their ears and turn away when jeongin pulls up
there isn’t a rule against a senior having a motorcycle and riding it to school
there are people who drive cars to school and that’s fine
he has a license and always wears a helmet
and he wears a thick leather jacket and heavy, black boots
(you’ve seen those boots
they look like they could stomp through concrete or smth)
there is no way he wouldn’t be safe
well, besides the fact that he rides a motorcycle
but you, still not caring, just kinda stare as he rides into the parking area in front of the school
he always does this cool lil swing into his designated “motorcycles only” spot
and then takes off his helmet
to do that fucking hair shake that you always see in movies
that can only mean “hot guy on a motorcycle”
fucking hell
oh and he then runs his fingers through his black hair
to make it appropriately ~windswept~
and, yes, he looks way too god damn hot
unnecessarily so in your humble opinion (๑`^´๑)
you almost flip your shit every morning just bc of him
he’s handsome like a fucking movie star
angled cheekbones, a defined nose and chin, a jawline so sharp it could ki— it could seriously hurt you
and don’t even start on his eyes
jeongin’s eyes are so dark you often wonder if they’re actually brown
if he looks at you in the halls, you immediately get the sense he could somehow see into your soul
and, judging by the dark aura he has, probably can
jeongin isn’t particularly horrible or anything, but he’s known throughout the school to, honestly, not give a flying fuck
about anything
he’s….a little chaotic
for example, he flouts any rule he doesn’t like
and he talks back if a teacher says something he doesn’t agree with
(this has lead to some very heated discussions in class
although, you were actually inclined to agree with him most of the time, since he usually brings up some good points and such
(it’s generally a good idea, you’ve mused on a regular basis, to treat people like human beings and not like machines only in existence to produce goods and perform services to a select few)
most of your classes are with him
and he’s really smart
like the kind of smart where he barely does any work but still passes the class with an A
i mean, who said he could do that??!!?!
who allowed such sorcery
heCk
and you know he’s passed all his courses
he may or may not occasionally smoke or drink behind the school but you know for a fact there are people who do much worse and nobody says anything about them
maybe it’s the leather
and the moodiness
but um;;;;; that’s kinda hot, you know?
you’re not really sure why people think he’s the “bad boy”...
you’ve never seen or heard him be mean or rude to anyone, so how bad can he be?
okay okay yes you’ve seen the knife hilts poking out of his boots
but who the fuck cares?!! ( • ̀ω•́ )
it’s not like he’s ever pulled them on anyone
that you know of
.............
OH
and you’re pretty sure he knows you kinda watch him, too
bc one day he parked his bike facing the school instead of away
and you were just ~there~ as usual
but feeling very alone and exposed
since your dumbass friends had all decided to abandon you in your hour of need by walking away just before he rode up
and then, like a herd of sheep, they all turned to watch you as he did
ahahah friends? what are they?! nah don’t need them;;;
so there you were standing out on the pavement
very obviously looking at him
w e l p Σ(☉‿☉✿)Σ(☉‿☉✿)Σ(☉‿☉✿)
but, of course, he just had to look up
and this lil shit winked at you
actually winked
EXCUSE ME YANG JEONGIN
W H A T
;;;;;;;;;;;;
your friends teased you all day
“ooooh look it’s lover boy”
“shut up shut up shut up”
“but he just lookeD AT YOU”
“you’re lying”
“Y/N YOU FOOL”
“HHHHHHHH”
and it only gets worse from there (....um, you sure about that y/n?)
now whenever jeongin arrives in the mornings
he makes a point at looking over at you
you don’t always notice, unfortunately
and he ends up with a sad lil smile on his face bc he knows you’re having fun with your friends
but fuck!!!!
you’re just so!!! cute!!!!!
how can he not notice you??!!!
especially when you’re in all of his classes
and obviously watch for his motorcycle every morning
it makes him feel kinda cool, tbh
he’s also noticed that you like strawberries
a l o t (≧◡≦)
as in, your backpack is a strawberry
you have strawberry pins on said strawberry backpack
your raincoat has a pattern of strawberries on it
your pencil case may or may not be a lil cat eating, yes, a strawberry
SO
jeongin being the smooth guy (he thinks) he is
gets you a strawberry sweetbread
and is all excited to give it to you
so after class on friday, he decides today’s his chance
(also, the sweetbread isn’t gonna last forever alfdjghafkgj)
aaaand you both try to walk out the door at the same time
which doesn’t work
but WOW YOU’RE NOW REALLY CLOSE TO HIM
jeongin: *vibrates*
ACTUALLY TOUCHING SHOULDERS
WHAT
…..fuck (¬_¬;)
and since when do you smell really good, too?? alkjhsjfghajhf
jeongin’s just a little overwhelmed, you know?
ANyWaY;;;;;;
y/n, blushing furiously: “oh my god sorry”
jeongin, spluttering: “no, no after you”
((oh wow his voice dropped since the last time you saw him
how is that even possible??? guys….))
after a couple tries back and forth through the doorway
(your teacher’s trying not to laugh in the background)
you finally both make it out of the classroom
and you start to speed walk away since your friends are waiting so you all can hang out
“hey, y/n!” comes down the hall after you
ALSDJHADJFLHG what ;;
you turn around quickly to find jeongin standing right behind you
“um, so i noticed you really like strawberries”
e x c u s e m e (O_O);;;
first of all:
yang jeongin—your school’s super hot bad boy, the guy you’re only a little obsessed with bc he rides a motorcycle, the inexplicably brilliant student, and total badass—just spoke to you
WHAT
((really, Y/N?? r e a l l y?????))
second of all:
he’s holding something wrapped in absolutely adorable cat (and strawberry) wrapping paper
that’s completely against his aesthetic
but matches yours to a tee ( ◡‿◡ ♡)
huh….
“y/n?” *holds out package*
you have to mentally shake yourself a little
but you’re back now
hhhHHHH
“me?”
“Yeah, I got you this. I hope you like it.” (●´ω`●)
“thanks?” you say a bit lamely
you take the package and get a whiff of sweetbread
s w e e t b r e a d!!!! (*♡∀♡)
ajfhakljfhgjdsfgh your fav
you’d half expected jeongin to blast on outta there asap
but now he’s just standing in front of you, just kinda shifting back and forth
wait…is he nervous??
you slowly unwrap the package, careful not to damage the wrapping paper
(you are so going to reuse it or hang it on the wall or something ajdsdjfg)
and inside is a rounded sweetbread with strawberries delicately placed on top amongst swirls of pink icing
you gasp quietly
fucking hell it’s the cutest thing you’ve ever seen
jeongin’s just watching you, a small smiling spreading across his face
(which you don’t notice bc b r e a d)
you take a small bite of the treat and
。*:゜♡ヽ(*’∀’*)/♡゜:。*。
IT’S SOOOOO GOOD!!!!
you take another bite before looking up at jeongin and you finally see his smile
( ◡‿◡ ♡) (♡‿♡) (*♡∀♡)
it’s actually the best thing you’ve ever seen
there’s so much genuine happiness, and just a hint of mischievous mirth, in his smile
you feel like you’re looking into the sun, it’s so bright
why did jeongin, of all people get you, of all people, a sweetbread?
jeongin, completely unable to look cool anymore and shifting back and forth on the balls of his feet: “is it good?”
“OH MY GOD YES!!!”
and then you do something you never thought you’d do
ever
in the whole world ever
you throw your arms around yang jeongin’s neck
and give him a really big hug
his arms come up and around you to hug you back almost immediately,
which you were expecting even less than your own actions
but his hug is wonderful, even if he’s holding you like fine china
in a moment, you remember yourself and quickly step back
jeongin is blushing so much that he looks like a strawberry
(so good you just wanna eat him up (◕‿◕))
((y/n pls,,,,, not here....))
and you know you’re blushing just as much
you splutter an apology and run off down the hallway
and because you’re running off,
you don’t notice that jeongin is staring after
like a lovesick puppy (◕︵◕)
your friends are all over you about the sweetbread
bc they love it too
but you just say that you forgot you’d brought it with you that day
for some reason, you didn’t want to tell about your encounter with jeongin
when you get home, you savor the sweetbread,
remembering the warmth of jeongin’s smile~
the next friday, you’re outside at the picnic tables during lunch
it’s an absolutely beautiful day, with a light breeze~ (⌒ω⌒)
against the better judgement and fervent suggestions of your friends
you decide that it’s a great idea to get on top of one the tables
and dance
why?
someone had started playing ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”
no one can resist that song
so you’re having the time of your life
just dancing around on the table that your friends have since vacated bc they
a) don’t want to get kicked in the head, and
b) feel quite embarrassed to associate with you while you’re like this
......traitors (๑`^´๑)
and as anyone with an ounce of sense does when dancing to ABBA
you occasionally close your eyes in happiness
and suddenly you’ve stepped into air
your heart lurches and your eyes fly open
and your mind goes completely blank with panic
but you never reach the ground
you’re now surrounded by the smell of leather, metal, and.....
boy
someone had saved you from falling
the arms holding you are strong and well-muscled
and, surprisingly, comfortable
“i’ve got you,” a voice murmurs
you look up into the face of none other than jeongin
(⊙__⊙✿)
welp
you think to yourself “what... i thought he didn’t care about people??”
((nope y/n, he cares about YOU bc you’re the cutest and so lovely))
he smirks down at you, then sets you back down on the ground
“try to be more careful. okay, y/n?” he says, smoothing a wayward piece of your hair, then just walks off
you blush
(this seems to be becoming a common occurrence with jeongin)
and just stand there, dumbfounded
as jeongin saunters away to sit under a tree at the far end of the lawn
it’s a good saunter, and the tight, black skinny jeans only help (⊙ __ ⊙);;;;
your friends rush you, asking if you’re okay and asking what was up with jeongin
you say that you have no idea
......although, that’s not entirely true
since you now have a sneaking suspicion that *gasp* jeongin might have a crush on you?
maybe??
(hopefully!! (゚▽゚`*)?)
your friends just continue dithering as you stare at jeongin, who’s watching you right back
he winks
ALKJSDHGAKLDJFGADJKFGBADJF
you really wish he’d stop doing that bc it’s making your heart pound like a herd of horses and now yOu CAn’t EveN THinK
FUCK!!
later that day as school’s letting out
jeongin comes up to you, leather jacket slung over his shoulder
he’s got on a black t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up a couple times
and ooooooh my
you’d never noticed before
(well, besides during lunch when he caught you)
but yang jeongin has really nice arms
and pecs (⊙‿⊙)
and now you’re staring (oh fuck,,,,, not again)
“uh;;;; hi, jeongin!” you manage to squeak out alkdjfhsldjf
“hey, i was wondering if you wanted a ride”
eXCusE Me wHAt??? ∑(゚ロ゚〃)
“on the motorcycle. i have an extra helmet, since my sister sometimes rides with me”
O H
your mouth takes control before you even have time to think
“sure! i’d love to!!”
a minute later, you’re standing in front of that sleek, black motorcycle that you’ve admired for months
the young man riding it helps the matter quite a lot, too
there’s even this little carrier container on the back of the bike that he puts his (small) backpack into
he reaches out for yours and stows it
then, jeongin hands you a helmet with lime green racing stripes on its sides
you briefly wonder if his sister is anything like him
probably
“have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?” jeongin asks
you shake your head, unable to speak bc you’re so excited and also kinda nervous
your mom’s words fly through your head
don’t you dare get on a motorcycle, y/n. ever. don’t you dare! they’re too dangerous by half and— well, if i ever find out you’ve been on one, you won’t be allowed out of the house, except for going to school, for a month. you mark my words, y/n! (; ・`д・´)
you promptly ignore her voice in your head and slid the helmet down over your head
the world suddenly becomes slightly more vibrantly colored as the visor shields your eyes
jeongin had swung his long legs over the bike, straddling it with his feet still on the ground
“so, the important thing is to stay in line with me. what i mean is that if i lean to one side or the other, you’ve gotta lean with me. otherwise, we’ll fall over and that really wouldn’t be good. just hold on tight to my waist and, sorry i don’t mean to sound rude, but please don’t scream.”
jeongin looks only a little rueful as he says that
but you don’t blame him
you wouldn’t want someone screaming in your ears as you tried to concentrate either
“okay, right. lean with you. hold on tight,” you say
jeongin sits down, one foot still on the ground, and pats the seat behind him
“come on! take a seat—i promise you’ll be fine, y/n”
tentatively, you clamber onto the motorcycle behind jeongin
and wrap your arms around his waist
you can feel . . .
holy shit his abs feel like a fucking washboard
ExCuSE mE?????!!!! (@_@)
heCk
((y/n, pls. calm down;;; we know he’s got muscles))
so um,,,, yeah
it’s really actually quite comfy to lean against his back
but then hen he lays his hands over yours
and looking back over his shoulder says, “ready, babe?
B A B E
HHHHHHHHHHHH
***y/n has officially malfunctioned***
damn tho
this boy is bold as fuck
wow
you’re not exactly complaining
bc you now know that you like being called “babe”
it makes you feel special (✿◠‿◠)
and you like how it sounds coming from jeongin
you can tell jeongin is grinning under his helmet
“yep, i’m ready,” you manage to say
and then you feel and hear the thunder of the engine igniting
it’s exhilarating and you hadn’t even started moving yet
jeongin yells over the engine “hold on!”
in one smooth motion he kicks the kickstand up, brought his foot off the ground, released the brake and clutch
and then...
and then you feel like you’re flying
even though you’re not going 70 mph (113 kph)
the wind tears at your clothes
making you feel freer than you’d ever felt before~
you thought you’d guessed what it would feel like to ride on a motorcycle
but even your wildest imaginings couldn’t come close to reality
you hold on tightly to jeongin’s waist, feeling every shift of his body as he guides the motorcycle along the roads surrounding your school
all too soon you find yourself back in the parking lot of your high school
you don’t release your hold on jeongin until after he’s shut off the engine
jeongin takes off his helmet, shaking his hair as usual, and hangs it on a handlebar
then he turns on the seat
you lean back
but jeongin reaches out and gently removes your helmet to place it on the seat between the two of you
even without touching it, you could feel that your hair was mussed
so you shake out your hair, too
and immediately understand why jeongin does it
you feel strangely powerful and a bit sexy
it’s a fun, new feeling
jeongin smiles like you’re the loveliest flower he’s ever seen
and, for the second time that day, tucks a strand of hair behind your ear
“how was it?” he asks, a look of concern on his face
you beam, feeling infinitely more at ease around jeongin
“amaaaaazing!”
“yeah? oh, don’t cry, y/n”
“what? oh” you realize that you are, indeed, crying
you wipe the tears from your face
after all, they’re just tears of happiness
“jeongin, it was incredible, oh my god. can we do it again? please?”
he laughs, throwing his head back
and you glimpse the dimple at the base of his throat
“maybe another day, babe” jeongin concedes
you pout
“oh, okay. thank you”
there’s a look in jeongin’s eyes that you can’t quite place
is it sadness? fondness? desire?
he exhales, then the corner of his mouth quirks up
you feel the warmth of his fingers caress your cheek
“y/n, may i kiss you?”
***yet again, we regret to inform you that y/n has malfunctioned***
what the ever loving flipping fuck
d— did jeongin just,,,,
did he?
ALKJHGALKJFHG;AKLHFGAKLJGHKAJH
“i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable” jeongin says in a rush, dropping his hand
shit.
SHIT!
“no no no!! it’s fine, yes. please. that’s fine. that would be— that would nice. yes, very nice.”
wow you sounded almost hysterical
“good,” jeongin says simply
and leans in to softly press his lips to yours
you immediately kiss him back
and feel him smile against your mouth
just a moment later, he draws back, respectful, a question in his eyes
you chase his lips, not wanting to waste the precious opportunity to actually be kissing the yang jeongin!!
his hands come up to cup your neck
and you rest your palm against his chest, feeling the trembling beat of his heart
he tastes like like elderberry and cinnamon and clove all wrapped into one intoxicating milieu
you could kiss him for days and never tire
after what seems like hours, you break apart
“y/n,” jeongin begins
“oh just shut up and keep kissing me,” you say without hesitation, surprised at your own boldness (again)
it seemed that was becoming a habit around jeongin, too
he doesn’t bother responding
and, instead, kisses you until you’re breathless
again, you feel like you were flying

VARIOUS X READER HEADCANONS - REQUEST
“For Real?”
NOTES: ayyy you’re back :00 !! thanks for requesting againnn by the way my inbox is like a fuckin desert so no worries :333
P.S. - i don’t accept tsukasa usually but like,, special exception :3???
-
-> TERU MINAMOTO
As the President’s girlfriend, you are allowed full access to the Student Council Room much to Akane’s dismay.
You know what?? Akane’s gonna get kicked out again if says anything :DD
But he doesn’t really mind you.
In fact: you mind him.
*stressed (Y/N) noises as he continues to gush about Aoi*
Anyone who says ‘Hey, you can’t go in there!’ because you’re not a part of the student council shall be ignored :’)))
Teru’s got his eyes on everyone lmaoo
did i just make him sound like a yandere?? n-nah
ANYWAYSSSS 👏👏👏
You use the Student Council Room for *ehem* r e a s o n s. No, you definitely don’t use the room to read fanfictions and visual novels. Nope. Not at all.
But you actually do >:333
You’re inside that very room right now, tapping away at your phone to keep reading the next passages of the oNE OF THE SADDEST VISUAL NOVELS YOU’VE EVER SEEN—
saeyoung choi, anyone?
Then comes in Teru.
PLEASE CUE TERU BLINKING SEVERAL TIMES AND FROZEN IN PLACE AFTER SEEING THE TEARS JUST RUNNING DOWN YOUR CHEEKS
Nonono, Teru never wanted to see you cry about anything ever !! :((
He’ll do everything in his power, a whole dang lot of power in his hands, to keep seeing that smile of yours.
Frantic, he rushes over to you and kind of just,, pats your head as you sniffle and sob as you watch the screen.
He’s only ever had to deal with Tiara’s tantrums and guilt over having to scold Kou, okay??? What?? Is he gonna cradle you until you fall asleep?? Is he gonna ban you from seeing Hanako even if you can’t see him??? WHAT DOES HE D O—
Observational skills on point as always, he sees a someone on your screen, and heart wrenching words if he only knew the context behind it.
“...Why are you crying, (Y/N)?”
“HE ALMOST DIED TERU I COULD HAVE GOTTEN THE BAD ENDING AND I—“
Teru just. small smile and eyes shut, if you get my drift.
He’s lowkey confused for about a few seconds until he connects the dots with his,
b i g b r a i n ✨
You were only reading a visual novel. You just told him that you almost had a bad ending. That guy on your screen said those words. You were crying because of a fictional character??
Huh. Maybe he should pick up one of these novels and read them with you,,, if he had the time to squeeze it in his schedule— oh who am i kidding, he’ll squeeze in time to be with you no matter what.
“Should I contact the developer...?”
“tERU NO—“
-> TSUKASA
Damn rat might kill anyone who makes you cry smh smh.
I mean... business, am I right???
OKAY I’LL STOP—
You’re one of the ✨ School Mysteries ✨
How did you die? Well, let’s just say there was a truck, a phone and an unfortunate incident that’s been talked about through hushed whispers and murmurs.
Speaking of phone, dang thing’s still stuck on your hand for like,,, ages. Not that you care very much. At least the afterlife gave you some entertainment :’)))
You’re with Tsukasa for whatever reason— Once he showed up inside of your Boundary, he just clinged to you ever since. He’s cute, you admit, if you look past the terror he’s done to spirits.
Tsukasa has never granted your wish. You didn’t have one, really, but you still didn’t understand why the pesky ghost didn’t ask terrorized for one. Despite that being his job. And why he’s here. But like— whatever lol.
What he DOES do is ask you to never leave his side. What you didn’t know was that Tsukasa never granted or asked for your wish because he didn’t want you to leave him once it’s done ala horrific.
i—i forgot my point here bUT ANYWAY MOVING ON DJDBDB WHEW LONG INTRO
You’re in your Boundary, the endless hallway, and chlllin while scrolling through your phone for fanfiction to read while you’re dead. The usual. Yep, this is pretty much why you died but lmao you’re just,,, doing it again.
gentle reminder for anyone reading to not use your phone while walking across streets >:000 i care about your safety guys !!
Now where was I? oH yes.
You find a particular fic about your favorite pairing from when you were alive. It still is. Fluff, they said, it’s only fluff... It was not fluff. IT WAS A REALLY FLUFFY ONE UNTIL IT WAS NOT :(((
Tsukasa, who left for personal business, returned to see you bawling and rolling down on the ground and clutching your phone tightly.
“(Y/N)??? Is that a new exercise you’re doing???”
“nO >:((((“
He sits down cross-legged next to you, curious eyes landing on your body still rolling around because of that OnE LiNe. Most likely pokes you until you stop and pay attention to him.
You pout, ‘So cute <33’ He ponders upon before smiling far too widely at you like dude why you gotta smile like that it’s creeping me out.
Hesitantly, you showed him the screen, hoping he’d understand how much distress you have at this moment.
He did not.
“AHA! (Y/N)’S CRYING BECAUSE OF A SAD STORY!” He says with the widest fuc ki n grin.
You take back the phone, blushing immensely out of embarrassment for showing him the pic and him l a u g h i n g at you.
Eventually, Tsukasa stops. He softly tells commands you to look at him. Very very carefully, you take a quick look.
Then he pinches both your cheeks as hard as he can, slight blush on his face.
“Don’t worry, (Y/N)! I’ll make sure no one else makes you cry like this.”
-> AKANE AOI
Oh boy.
Looking at the clock on the wall, then over to the piles of notes laying about on the table, you wonder where the fuck your boyfriend could be.
It was quiet, too quiet for your own liking. Everyone else had gone back to their homes or went out with friends.
And you??? You’re here.
Waiting for Akane since the beginning of time.
omg time pun
Inside the library.
IT’S REVISION DAY DAMN IT— PLUS YOU HAD A TEST TOMORROW AND AKANE JUST SAID HE’D TUTOR YOU ABOUT IT HDBDHE
You look down on the notes you made, words barely of any interest for you, and put it down on the table. “A little quick peek.” You say as your hand shuffles for your phone in your bag.
When you DID find it, you frowned. No new texts from Akane. Awfully strange, since he’d text you 23/7 prayer circle punishment break
Then you see a notification pop up... then you find out your oh-so-loved fic has finally updated after a week of waiting. Patience running thin, you decide to read the ol’ thing.
Bad idea.
You couldn’t stop reading after a long long while. The words simple captivated your mind as of a puppeteer controlling one’s puppet. Besides, Akane was bending the rules, so why can’t you???
Speaking of time boy,
AKANE WAS HURRYINGLY DASHING TOWARDS THE LIBRARY IN S P E E D.
Teru had pushed off all his paperwork on him because he felt an eerie feeling about an apparition hanging nearby.
“The least you could do, Aoi.” He says, flashing a bright smile and leaving Akane alone in the room. HE HATES THAT GUY >:(((
Everyone around him gave him weird looks, but were already used to his old Aoi shenanigans. So they all turned a blind eye.
SUDDENLY THE DOOR SLAMS OPEN :0 !!!!
AND HE ENTERS, PANTING, AND SEES YOU.
Initially, he’s glad to see you waiting for up for him. BUT THENNN HE SEES YOU SOBBING.
“(Y/N), did I really take that long???”
“N-No, I-I’m not—“
Your eyes are obviously puffing up from the amount of tears you shed after reading a 5000-word update.
Somehow, you couldn’t bring yourself to show the phone to him.
Akane’s real concerned, to the point where he’d gladly use his time-freezing skills just to check if no one was bullying you through your phone.
And after many MANY attempts to get your phone, he did it.
He stopped time. Just to see what’s on there.
Of course, he had to know what exactly made his love so sad and read the whole thing in like,, under a minute— boy’s got mad reading skills i tell you.
Finally! Time! Comes! Back! AND YOU STARE IN HORROR AS YOU SEE AKANE HOLDING AND READING WHAT’S ON YOUR PHONE
Your exact thoughts rn: s c r e e e e eEREE
Akane looks at you, a chuckle hiding behind his lips. The thoughts of you crying lingering in his mind now replaced themselves with how cute your flustered face is right now.
“Did you really cry because of this, (Y/N)?”
“Q-QUIT IT!”
Somehow, your boyfriend is such a damn tease when it came to you— tHERE ARE APPROPRIATE TIMES FOR THIS NOT NOW >:00
But still... he’s good too.
Akane wipes the tear about to escape from your eye, enjoying how your face blushed tenfold with a sly smile.
“I won’t let anyone else ever make you cry.”
-
NOTES: did you enjoy?? uh anyways— masterlist on the way :))

Invisible
Hi all! This is a story I’ve been thinking about and I’m finally putting it out there. I’m hoping to do more parts but I hope you like!
Summary: You were always quiet and shy, until you lost your mother who always encouraged you to put yourself out there. So you do and you’ve caught the eyes of two Pogues.
Word Count: 2.4k
Warnings:Just some cursing
The Outer banks had been your home for your entire life and you had no friends, well except Pope. Pope Heyward was your only friend in the obx. You were both on the math team together, you both gushed over the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. He had wanted to introduce you to his other friends but you just didn’t want too, not yet at least. Then your mom died, car crash and your entire world fell apart. Your mom was your anchor, your confidant, the person who hugged you and calmed you when your anxiety got bad. She was the one always trying to get you out of your shell. It was hard to not have her for the end of your junior year but you survived. Pope and his friends were having an end of summer party at the bone yard, he of course invited you like he always did. However this time you said yes, you made a promise to yourself and your mom that you were going to branch out this year. This was going to be your summer. It was the Saturday after the last day of school which meant party day. You were standing in your room, sighing as you smoothed out the wrinkles in your dress for the 80th time. You looked good, you looked great, right? Of course you did don’t be stupid. You put on a little bit of lip gloss and mascara before grabbing your bag.
“You’re wearing sneakers to a bone yard party?” Your older sister asked as she cut up vegetables for dinner.
“Hey, just because I’m going to a party doesn’t mean I have to wear sandals or heels or something.” You said as you stuck your tongue out.
“Fine, but meet a cute boy and make out with him.” She replied. Your older sister Shelby was all you had. She was about 5 years older than you and she had two jobs, waiting tables at the wreck and helping Popes dad with his deliveries. Your dad had passed away in a boating accident when you were 2, so you was just you three. Until your mom went too.
“I’ll see you later.” Was all you said back before walking out the door. You lived pretty deep in the cut, you lived about a 10 minute walk from the bone yard. By the time you got there the party was in full swing, of course Pope and his friends were near the middle of all the commotion. They were laughing and talking with tourons, as they handed out beers. Pope noticed you almost immediately.
“Y/N! You actually came!” He laughed as he grabbed your arm and pulled you closer to his group.
“Guys this is Y/N, the one I was telling you about.” You gave a little wave, extremely shy at the moment.
“Oh yeah, you were both on the math team.” One of his friends, Kiara said. They all snickered under their breath which left you confused.
“Is it bad to be on the math team?” You raised your eyebrow, getting a little defensive. Your mom loved that you were on the math team, so you were protective.
“No no it’s okay, it’s just a little inside joke.” John B said as he pulled his girlfriend Sarah into his side.
“Oh okay, cool. Uhm so, could I get a beer?” You asked, tilting your head as you looked at JJ who was manning the keg stand.
“You? A beer?” He simply chuckled before filling up a cup and handing it to you.
“Yes I want a beer. So what?” You half snapped as you grabbed the beer and taking a sip. You immediately gagged a bit at the taste but continued to drink. JJ smirked at you.
“That’s why, I’ve literally never seen you around here. Why now? Aren’t you like always with your mom?” Ow. Kiara suddenly jabbed him into the side with her elbow.
“JJ.” She hissed, watching as you chewed your lip a bit and suddenly downed the entire drink.
“Right well my mom died three months ago, so I can’t always be with a dead corpse.” You said before handing your cup back to JJ for a refill. JJ looked a bit impressed but also guilty before filling your cup up again.
“Y/N I’m sorry, I didn’t know.” You simply shrugged, sipping your second cup. “I’ve just decided to branch out, be more social like my mom wanted.” You chewed your lips to stop yourself from crying.
“Hey, it’s okay. JJ just has one brain cell that he shares with Pope so it’s okay.” Sarah said with a smile as she walked over and randomly hugged you.
“You’re sticking with us now, got it?” Pope asked as he joined in on Sarah’s little hug with you.
“Okay deal.” You laughed, still a little weary. You glanced up from your hug and noticed that JJs eyes never left yours. You simply looked away as you ended the hug.
“So what do you guys normally do at these parties?”
“Well glad you asked.” JJ grinned as he pulled a blunt out of his pocket.
“Do you want to try this or stick with your beer?”
“I’ll think I’ll try-“
“You should keep the signal clear Y/N.” Pope said as he gave JJ a disapproving look. You laughed a bit at what Pope said before looking to JJ.
“Let’s mess this signal up!” You cheered as you drank your beer. Sarah, John B and Kiara just laughed as Pope shook his head. JJ eagerly lit it and took a hit before handing it to you.
“Do you know how to smoke a blunt?” He asked you seriously as he took a step towards you. Apparently according to Pope the only thing that JJ was ever serious about was weed. You shook your head slowly.
“Nope, never smoked a day in my life.” JJ groaned and pulled you over to sit next to him on the rock he was on.
“Okay, so first obviously you suck in a breath, but then inhale so it gets into your lungs. If it doesn’t then you won’t get high and my weed will go to waste, got it?” You blushed a little as you nodded then hesitantly took the blunt from JJ, putting it to your lips as you breathed in. You made sure to inhale so you could feel it in your lungs, they suddenly felt like exploding as you started coughing, grabbing your cup of beer to help subside it.
“Oh my god, was that supposed to happen?” You chugged the rest of your beer.
“That was terrible.”
“You just gotta get used to it.” Kiara said with a shrug. After what felt like years of couching you asked for another refill of the beer.
“Not tonight, tonight I stick with beer.” You stood up as you got a little confident.
“You guys dance right? I mean, I can go find someone to dance with?” You were nervous even if you were confident but you wanted to do what your sister suggested. You want to make out with a boy. The boys looked a little confused about your question while the girls suddenly grabbed your arm as they both dragged you over to where people were dancing.
“So do you like Pope? Or are you just friends?” Sarah asked as you all danced in a circle.
“What? Pope? And me? No. No! We are just friends.” You started stuttering a bit as you got nervous.
“Why did he say something to you?” You suddenly asked you didn’t know why, but you never thought of Pope like that. But he was kind and funny, plus he always saw you.
“Well no.. but I think you two would be cute together.” Sarah grinned at you right before you bumped into someone.
“Oh my gosh I am so sorry.” You said quickly, turning around.
“Oh it’s no problem really. I can forgive a pretty girl.” The boy you had bumped into was cute, he definitely seemed like a kook but you just wanted to make out with someone. So what if they were a kook?
“Go away Kelce.” Kiara interjected before you could say something.
“She’s not interested.”
“Actually, I am.” You grinned at Kelce.
“Would you want to dance with me maybe?” The boy whose name you know knew was Kelce lit up like a Christmas tree.
“I would love too. And your name?”
“Y/N.”
“Let’s dance Y/N.” He held out his hand for you to take. Once you did he pulled you close and just swayed with you, nothing too inappropriate. It was nice, he didn’t really try to talk to you which kind of bugged you but you just let it go. You glanced over at the Pogues and you suddenly saw both Pope and JJ stand up, which was odd. Then you knew why, you suddenly felt another pair of arms there were not Kelces.
“Well aren’t you pretty?” You suddenly whipped your head around and saw Rafe, you knew him instantly. He tried to get with your sister a few times.
“Back off her.” You heard JJ say, you looked around and saw Pope and JJ directly behind Kelce.
“But she wanted to dance.” That was Rafe.
“Maybe I don’t want to dance anymore..” You tried to pull away from Kelce but then that just caused you to run into the front of Rafe. You looked over Kelces shoulder and found JJs eyes, you looked at him with a look that just begged for him to help you. Suddenly he and Pope yanked Kelce away from you before JJ pushed Rafe to the ground. That was when Sarah got involved.
“What the hell is going on?”
“Uhm so I was dancing with Kelce and everything was great until Rafe came up behind me..”
You had fear in your eyes, shaking a bit as you suddenly hugged Sarah tightly. She hugged back just as tight and pulled you away to go back to the rocks where you had taken your hit. In the background you could hear fighting and arguing. About ten minutes later Pope and JJ came back looking a bit happy. Pope sat down on your right and JJ stole Sarah’s spot on your left. Apparently John B decides to help fight off Kelce and Rafe so Sarah was checking to see how he was doing.
“I’m sorry guys...” You mumbled as you looked down at her hands.
“Y/N what are you talking about?” Pope asked as he hesitantly put a hand on your shoulder.
“You didn’t do anything wrong alright? Those guys are assholes and they deserve whatever they got coming to them.” This time it was JJs time to talk as he playfully nudged your shoulder, you looked over to JJ and smiled a bit.
“Thank you guys but I think I’m gonna go home.” You stood and turned to face them.
“I can too-“
“I’ll walk you home-“ Pope and JJ spoke at the same time.
“Oh uhm, I don’t need anyone to walk me I’m good.”
“Hey Pope! Come help me with this!” Ki yelled while fiddling with the keg.
“I guess I get to walk you home.” JJ grinned and stood up.
“Lead the way.” You started walking, trying to walk a bit fast to make the trip go by quickly.
“So why did you want to dance with someone?” JJ asked as he walked slower, you sighed because you knew he was walking slow on purpose.
“I wanted to get out of my shell more, since my mom died my sister has been trying to motivate me to go out and do things. So tonight she told me to find a boy and make out with him.” You blushed when you said the end of your sentence.
“You could make out with me?” That stopped you in your tracks.
“I’m sorry what?” You turned to look at him, eyes wide.
“Make out with me.” JJ repeated, taking a step towards you which caused you to take a step backward but you didn’t realize that there was a tree directly behind you. You left out a squeal at the feeling.
“You barely know me.... why do you want to make out with me?”
“Because you’re cute and besides, I want you to be able to tell your sister you kissed a cute boy.” He winked, shrugging.
“Uhm fine okay. I’ll make out with you but just this once okay? And don’t tell a soul!” You jabbed your finger into his chest. JJ simply chuckled and took another step towards her, brushing their lips together. You gasped, wrapping your arms around his neck as you eagerly pressed your lips firmly against his. He gripped your waist as he began to press you into the trees, his tongue softly brushing against your bottom lip. That caused you to gasp which was what JJ wanted so he slowly slid his tongue into your mouth.
“Y/N!” You suddenly pushed JJ away from you as you breathed heavily, you looked over JJs shoulder to see Pope running towards you guys.
“Hey I thought I’d help JJ walk you home.”
“Pope I can handle walking a girl home on my own.”
“Hey guys really it’s okay, come on it’s like five more minutes.” You ran your fingers through your hair as you started to walk to your house. You felt awkward but this time you definitely could tell that Pope might like you. After the very silent walk you finally arrived to your house, turning to look at them.
“Thanks for the walk home boys.” You smiled a little, waving to them.
“You want to hang out with us tomorrow? We’re meeting at the Shipwreck tomorrow at 10. Did you come too? I mean Kie did say you’re one of us now.” Pope said eagerly. You glanced over to JJ who was just grinning at you.
“Yeah okay sure. Shipwreck at 10 am.” You quickly turned to unlock your front door.
“Hey Y/N?” You turned to look at JJ.
“Yeah? Have a good night.” He suddenly kissed you on your cheek and turning to start walking.
“Pope you coming?”
“Yeah In a sec.” Pope suddenly kissed your opposite cheek.
“Goodnight Y/N.” With that he turned and the two boys walked away from sight. You quickly walked into your house and locked the door, leaning against it. Did they both like you? You didn’t understand, you were so confused. You were invisible, you weren’t seen and now all of the sudden you had two attractive boys kissing your cheeks? This was going to be a confusing summer.

We are not our parents|Part Five
He couldn't see them
When Lucy had gotten the call from her, well, she didn't know what they were... her Richard Grayson, asking for her measurements, she was ever the skeptic.
"Is this about your dad's big fling?" She asked over the phone as she settled on her couch.
"Possibly," he answered from the other end, sitting at a desk in his room.
"Why don't I just pick what I wear," she questioned. The way she said where was like "whey-uh" . It was all Jersey, and made Dick laugh to himself.
"You definitely could, but I just wanted to give you a designer option," he explained.
"You think I can't afford a designer option?"
"I know you can't. You make 11 dollars an hour in Gotham city
"Fair. Okay. Fine we can try designer, but I have some specifications."
"Okay, shoot."
"No checker board, no pinstripes. Nothing that says criminal. I don't mind blazers or flowers. Nothing flashy I'm laying low," she rattled off.
"Don't worry. I know you are feeling a little weird about this-"
"-A little?-"
"But I know what I'm doing. Well, I guess the dress maker does. I don't have any say. I can pass on your message to them though," he explained. She gave a sigh of relief. She had been freaking out all week about this party. This stupid, ritzy, heart of Gotham party.
After she found out about her man being THE Richard Grayson Wayne, she wanted out. Even if her parents weren't terrorists, she still wouldn't be on his level. She missed when she thought he was just a gutter rat greecer wannabe punching muggers for fun. But he was educated. High Socioty. Fit as a fiddle, and hot as the Sahara. Yet he chased her. He wanted her. He was so infatuated.
It's not like she didn't see anything good about herself. On the contrary, she knew she was hardworking, pretty funny, nice to look at expessialy when she was trying, and all in all she was a cute, blonde girl next door. However, sometimes it felt like none of that mattered. She was surrounded by a dark legacy. She couldn't even consider having her own kids. What would she tell them, and mabey crazy skips a generation.
But this dumb, cute, himbo of a boy saw none of it. Or at least, he pretended not to notice it. Sometimes he'd give her a strange look and she wonder if he was thinking about the people who raised her. She started being a bit more subtle. No dark makeup, lest she look like her mother. No red lipstick, because that was her father's signature look. Hair up in pigtails? Off limits. The colors red or green, she avoided them before Dick Grayson anyway.
"Hello? Lucy are you still there," Dicks voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
"Sorry I think a siren was going by," she said avoiding the truth.
"No worries, I was asking if you wanted me to get a hair and makeup person too?"
"Oh gawd no! I know what looks good on my face," she laughed.
"Even with you not knowing what the dress will look like?" He challenged.
"On second thought-" she trailed off. She could hear him laugh from the other side of the line.
"Gotcha, I'll get it all set up," he assured.
He got it all set up alright. The afternoon before the party a knock on her door sounded. She opened it to fing him grinning with a black dress bag slung over his shoulder.
"Heya-Hiya," he greeted fondly. She noticed he wasn't alone at the door. There was also a pale woman with raven hair longer than she'd ever seen and jagged bangs. She wore a mesh top, black shorts and a leather jacket. She was ethereal and beautiful. Lucy almost forgot to talk.
"Babe, this is Rachel. She's really good with makeup and she's a buddy of mine," he introduced.
"So you're Lucy? The way your Golden retriever of a boyfriend described you I was expecting Shera, or Captian Marvel," his friend mused. Dick was turning bright red from the tips of his ears to his neck.
"Yeah, yeah, that's really funny Rachel," he awkwardly laughed. Lucy welcomed them inside and Dick layed the dress bag on the couch while Rachel carried in a big metal mackup case.
"I haven't seen the dress yet," Dick admitted, "I told her all that stuff you told me. Hopefully they listened." He said getting ready to unveil it.
Rachel was now standing beside them as Dick revealed the dress. As they stood there taking it in, she realized that there was a color she forgot to say was off limits. It was a beautiful dress. The top of it like a Corsett with spaghetti straps. The tooling elegant and down to the knees. There were several star details on it. They lay on a sky of deep purple. Lucy bit her lip nervously. Richard noticed immediately.
"Well, that was an oversight on our part," he sighed disappointedly. Rachel cocked her head confused.
"And I thought I was a Debby downer. It's a beautiful peice, plus it isn't too bright. Hell, I'd wear it," she concluded settling her hands on her hips. And she was right, it was beautiful. Mabey beautiful enough to distrct from the rest of her. If the only people talked about was her dress, she'd be okay with that.
"I love it," she said smiling.
"Yeah, Dick doesn't know what he's talking about. He has zero taste unless it's in women," she joked. She met eyes with her boyfriend and smiled.
Bruce was stewing in indecision. His son had come to him and told him that he and Lucy discussed the risks involved with a public appearance, that he could protect her, and that she had been through enough in her life so she should be able to just have fun for one night. He agreed. Deep down he agreed. However, he knew the kinds of people that attended these parties.
Not all of them were in it for the charity. Big names who wanted investors, ass kissing new moneies wanting to climb ranks. People with dirty money. It was an open charity event, and gossip from the criminal higher ups couldn't be discounted. All his parties had this risk, but this time it felt more pressing. On top of that he now knew the Jokers name. His full name. All he had to do was bluff with the first name an Harley had spilled all her info. She had told him all about Joker, her daughter, and how no matter how brutal the man was she wanted to stay with him.
"Yah know, I could handle our fights. The way we went round and round. I never considered leaving him until he suggested we get Lucy in on the family business," she sighed taking a drag of her cigarette. "I knew then I had to get the hell outta dodge. You and I both know a battlefield is no place for a child. She was only 15-" she stopped herself as she realized just who she was talking to.
"Nevermind. I guess you wouldn't get it. I wanted her to be normal. Arthur wanted her to be us. You always gotta want better for your kids. I might be a criminal psychopath, but why drag her into it. Why make her fight my battles? Or his? Or anyone's? I started a money stash. I was gonna run away with her," she looked down at the ash falling from her cigarette, and stamped it with her foot.
Bruce knew the rest of the story or at least from the perspective of his and police. Jason was his Robin at the time. They got an anonymous tip on the Joker's hideout. Harley had sold him out. When they arrived on the scene there was almost no reason to interfere. The way the two clowns were going at it, they would probably just end up killing eachother.
Harley's neck was cut. Only deep enough to make a red necklace that was surface level but he could guess what Joker was trying to accomplish. The Joker had two knives in him. He was still on his feet sporting a death grip on a hatchet with Harley's name on it.
There was also a hostage. Looking on, holding a gun, and not knowing who to shoot at. She was about 15.
They didn't even stop to look their way. They knew he and Robin were there, but this was deeply personal and toxically volatile.
Bruce remembered how easy they were to take down. Gotham police had them unarmed, sedated and in medical vehicles in practically no time; they had already done so much damage to eachother they hardly needed a push. Jason got the gun from the hostage. While Batman delt with the authorities and offered to gaurd the hospitals, not to keep anyone out, but keep the two clowns in, he left Jason in charge of the hostage.
He found out later that night, or he guessed, the next morning, that she was their kid. He learned when he read the police report. He forgot about her after that, but it did cross his mind that she was out there, somewhere, from time to time.
Dick and Lucy headed to the mannor before the party. He explained how his dad was a tightass and his butler was a total bro, so they'd be going through the garden and climbing the wall.
"You want me to climb in this dress and heels? In your dreams puddin," she scoffed rolling her eyes and playfully hitting him on the shoulder.
"I'll lift you over you won't have to break a sweat," he coerced. She lifted her eyebrow, amused.
"I'm 5'9 and 173 pounds of pure woman. If you think you can get me over that wall you are psyco!" She laughed exgerattingly gesturing as she spoke. When they had first got together, he would have had one of those danger reactions to this. To her eyes going wide with disbelief, and throwing her head back in a cackle. But those happened less and less. He realized something
He couldn't see them in her anymore.
Without another word he placed his hands on her waist and practically ballerina tossed her. She managed to catch halfway up on the flat part Making the wall a ledge. It almost knocked the breath out of her. But she managed to steady herself and hoist her body the rest of the way up. She was a bit of a ballerina after all. When they had both sets of feet in the garden, he flashed an "I told you so" smile. She rolled he eyes and gestured for him to lead the way.
When he began sliding open the kitchen door, he heard Tim's voice carry from the foyer.
"Well, well, well, how the turn tables!" He cackled. He heard a frustrated groan.
"Forget it, I don't see why I ask you for anything," he heard another male voice carry. The two pairs of couples entered the kitchen at the same time. Tim with his 'friend' Connor, and Dick with Lucy.
There was a beat of silence.
"So, you went the kitchen route huh?" Drake noted.
"Yeah, we went the kitchen route," Dick sighed.
"You look like a ruffian," Conner stated.
"I'm getting into my suit. It's wool and everything, I just didn't before picking up Lucy," he srugged.
"The matching ties are cute. You guys look adorable together," Lucy chimed in.
"We're not together," they defended in unison.
Another beat of silence.
"Well, okay. We are going upstairs. You guys have fun," Dick announced as he practically dragged Lucy behind them. Once they hit the back staircase they went from stone cold silence to giggling.
"They were wearing pride pocket squares and matching ties, how was I supposed' ta know," she defended with a hushed alarm.
"Oh they are. They just don't know it yet," he lead her to his room and opened the door for her.

maybe together we can get somewhere (noah x mc)
the gang finds out noah is alive. he and mc have built a life together while no one was paying attention (12k)
this was fun and experimental to write, trying to build a relationship through the limitations of the gang only getting snippets of noah and mc and hopefully giving enough information to piece together a plot without being to expository. hope u enjoy (noah x mc are soulmates change my mind)
Stacy.
It's a family vacation. Only the second one after her college graduation since she's only living an hour from Westchester.
It's her mom and dad and Connor and his girlfriend and her girlfriend.
Sofi laughs easily, fitting right in at some story Connor is telling and Stacy’s still annoyed that her brother brought up what she and her friends had found in the woods as children when they were at the airport: when anyone could have heard. She doesn't want to deal with it ever again. And she'll get up and move across the country if she has to.
Connor catches her gaze and offers a small smile and just like that; Stacy let's it go.
“Oh a farmers market,” her mom cries out, “we should check it out!”
Her dad laughs, “alright but don't expect me to eat any frankenstein fruit.”
Stacy snorts, finding Vancouver both amazing, and like any other city she's been to. Canada is hardly an exotic travel destination, but it's nice, waking up to a view of the pacific ocean. She wonders if she should visit her old friend since she's in town.
She'd last talked to you on the phone a month ago, surely she could just drop in.
Sofi slides her hand into Stacy’s, before asking, “what are you thinking about?” It's the first time Sofia's really spent time with her family. And her girlfriend knows about her tendency to overthink and now is one of those times.
Stacy's sighs, “just-I have a friend who lives in Vancouver. I was wondering whether I should visit them or not.”
Her girlfriend smiles, leading them into a stall with lots of fruit samples, “You should! If they're your friend I bet they'd be really happy to see you.”
Stacy shrugs. “Yeah, I guess you're right. It's not like I'm going to be in Vancouver again anytime soon.”
She grabs a second sample of the blood oranges, before telling Stacy as she decides to get a few for the road, “so who is this friend?” Because Sofi doesn't know about the whole Redfield thing and she'll never know because Stacy doesn't want to burden her with Redfield and also doesn't want to talk about it herself. It's over: in the past. Finished.
“One of my childhood friends like Lucas. There was this whole group of us,” Stacy explains.
“Like Dan,” Sofi nods, understanding. “Do you guys still talk?”
“Yeah.”
“Then you should totally drop by! Personally, I could skip the biking tour.”
Stacy laughs, “my parents really just got us all the types of tour.” It was nice, how much things had changed and the boat tour had been fun even if she’d gotten pretty cold over those two hours, it had just been the perfect excuse to snuggle up with Sofi and a cup of warm coffee inside. Connor and Vy could be outdoorsy together, taking millions of photos of the water and skyline.
“It’s cute,” Sofi comments, “my dad would just grumble about the expense and lead his own tour, no doubt getting us all lost.”
Stacy shrugs, “that’s why we have google maps.”
Sofi laughs, and pays for her oranges.
Stacy’s tired of the crowded stall, so she steps outside to wait. Canadians may be polite, but there’s only so many people brushing past her she can take. She takes out her phone and asks Lily for your address because of course Lily has it; she had sent everyone care packages and birthday presents without fail. Stacy had just sent an electronic gift card and called it a day.
There’s a good crowd but this isn't a sad little farmers market like the one back home that has like nothing but a stall or two.
She finds that she does miss the small town feel of the city she lives in even if she has to drive everywhere and living close to her family is nice even if she’ll forever hate the woods, any woods. Andy and tom had confirmed nothing was out in Westchester but she won’t chance it.
It’s second nature to go through her emails while she’s on her phone.
She scans the crowd, seeing if she spots her family somewhere. And sure enough Connor and Vy are sniffing at some tea samples, looking disgustingly sweet together and Stacy makes sure to take a picture because she went with Connor and Tom to pick out the ring. He just has to pop the question.
Wait! Was she or Sofi going to ask the question? Oh god, Stacy wanted to marry this girl. It hits her like a ton of bricks and they’re only 23, been dating two years so they have time, but Stacy’s sure. This is the one.
The panic subsides as she realizes, yeah, this is the woman she wants to spend the rest of her life with and that’s no big deal. They’ll take it day by day.
She locks her phone, glances around, ready to go get Sofi who probably struck up a whole conversation with the vendors and is getting invited over to their house for dinner as Stacy stands out here, waiting, and sees. . .well not Noah Marshall because he’s dead. So that’s not possible. And it’s not like she’s in Westchester.
But-but it certainly looks like Noah at a glance.
She can’t actually make out the man’s features, just the back of his head, which wow-Stace, she might just be losing it if she’s starting to see Noah Marshall walking around, but there’s something about the way the man walks and the shade of hair even if the haircut has changed. . .she shakes her head.
She’s imagining things.
“Ready to go,” Sofi asks, putting her hand on Stacy’s arm, “Your mom texted, she said to meet in front of Whole Foods wherever that is. Also, hilarious that there’s a farmers market in front of Whole foods.”
Stacy snorts, nodding, “yeah, let’s go.” And then looks back because it’s been five years and she still wants to kick Noah’s ass even though he’s dead so it’s a non issue at this point.
The man’s gone.
*
Stacy soon forgets among trying to keep up with the itinerary that her family had made on google docs over the past few months.
*
They take a ferry in the general direction of the address Lily gave her because it’s a fun way to travel. Connor comes along but Vy stays behind in the hotel because she wants to call her parents.
“Did they go to school here,” Connor asks, because it had been a few years and he hadn’t really kept in touch with you the way Stacy and the others had.
“No,” Stacy explains as she double checks the address while Sofi points out cute houses as they walk down the street google maps is saying the house is on. “They went to UWash. I think they studied something boring like finance which I know Ava made fun of them in the group chat about.”
Sofi, a current law student, asks, “what’s wrong with finance?”
Connor snorts, “you’re talking about the same woman that helped organize supplies for her campus’ black lives matter protests.”
“Ava’s very anti-establishment,” Stacy explains because Sofi hasn’t met Ava. Her old friend had transferred to Berkeley before Stacy started dating Sofi, but not before showing everyone her minor magical abilities. “You know, the whole break up the banks, give native americans their land back, will definitely end up a granola anthropology professor in some university after her goth phase.”
Sofi nods, “Ah, I get it. She’s not wrong about the banks. Did you watch the big short?”
“You have the most boring taste in movies,” Stacy teases because this woman made her watch Dunkirk which was long and boring and the soundtrack gave her a headache.
Her girlfriend shrugs shamelessly, “I did do a film studies minor so. . .”
Stacy knocks on the door. “I hope they’re in.” It’s a cute if small house on the edge of the city, close enough to still be part of Vancouver without being in the middle of traffic. There’s a subway station just two streets over, but taking the ferry had been much nicer. Subways had lost their charm in new york after all the times Stacy had been an hour or two late because of some issue.
“Wait,” Connor asks, raising a brow, “you didn’t text them?”
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” Stacy admits. She hadn’t seen you in over two years. You had even less of a reason to be in Westchester compared to everyone who’s family still lived there. Your house had sat empty since you left for college.
“I think it's cute,” Sofi says, wrapping her arms around Stacy’s waist from behind.
Stacy smiles, blushing slightly.
The door opens up and holy fuck.
Stacy gasps, her mouth forming a wide O because she can’t even form a coherent thought.
A very much alive and happy Noah Marshall opens the door, wearing a pink apron that says something inane “kiss the cook”, with more than a bit of food stains, and flour on his chin. He’s not wearing a beanie, but it’s summer and Stacy is sweating even in shorts, and his hair is cut and styled instead of long and greasy like it had been in high school. His eye color has somehow changed from brown to a strange shiny blue that seems too catlike to be natural but that’s whatever when he’s apparently risen from the dead.
What the hell!
Connor is just as flabbergasted as she is.
And Noah’s caught off guard, the easy smile dying on his lips as he realizes who’s at the door.
It’s Sofi that spares them, asking Noah if you’re home, because she doesn’t know anything about what went down in your senior year of high school.
Noah nods wordlessly, “yeah, yeah, come in,” even though he looks like that's the last thing he wants to do looking as grim faced as he had been in school, sitting in the back and refusing to talk to anyone.
For once, Stacy wishes Sofi wasn't here because she wants nothing more than to kick Noah’s ass. She took kickboxing lessons, she totally could. Noah's taller, but not exactly built in the same way Andy is after all the years of exercise; though he's not exactly a scrawny teenager anymore.
How long has this been going on?
You're sitting at the kitchen table, a cheap flimsy thing from Ikea that at least has the decency to look nice, laptop open while wearing a moth-eaten oversized t-shirt of the beastie boys. You don't even look up, when you ask nonchalantly, “so who was at the door?” You reach a hand from another chip, eating straight from the bag.
“Stacy,” Noah says faux cheerfully. And Stacy did not miss how annoying he could be. “And Connor Green.”
You finally look up. A couple thousand emotions running through your face: surprise as you open your lips to speak and then close it without a word, your brow furrows as you frown, then you exchange glances with Noah, then you're blushing red as you meet Stacy's questioning gaze, caught red handed. After a second, you can't meet her gaze, instead looking at Connor the same way you had that year as if he could single handedly save you from everything and no wonder you asked him to the dance, oblivious to Stacy's crush on you at the time.
“Hey Connor, long time no see,” you get up, crossing the length of the small kitchen to hug him, “Andy's always going on about you, you know.”
Connor manages a smile, “it's good to see you, too.”
“Hi, I'm Sofi,” she says, extending a hand, “Stacy’s told me a lot about you.”
You shake her hand, inviting her to down sit, “all of you. Dinner’salmost ready.” You glance at Stacy asking. . .
She shakes her head. Of course she hasn't mentioned Noah. She's tried to erase him from her memories the same way she's tried to forget all about the ruins in the woods and Dan disappearing.
“Not that you helped,” Noah quips, proceeding to slip back into the kitchen.
“Self care.” You smile back, confirming her suspicion that this had been going on for a while. And you haven't mentioned anything. Not once. But then, you stopped bringing him up when you realized everyone was on the same page, the page you weren't, after what he had done, no amount of childhood tragedy could excuse the fact he had been willing to kill all his friends for some monster. Stacy couldn't find it in her to forgive him, even in death.
Meanwhile, you had spent too much time after everything that happened crying over this jerk.
“What are you making,” Sofi asks as Stacy takes a seat, everything clicking together as you offer everyone something to drink, exchanging lovesick smiles with Noah even as he bats you away from the stove with a spatula.
You loved him.
Despite everything he had done, you loved him. Stacy couldn't understand: had been closer to Dan and you than Noah even as kids. The way you looked at him said everything; the way you'd chased after him, unwilling to let him go into the woods alone.
It made sense why you were so willing to forgive him, and why you had spent so much time mourning him.
“Vegetable pot pie,” Noah explains, starting to roll out the dough, “This one decided to become vegetarian.”
“Since when,” Connor asks, deciding to just go along with it all. Maybe Connor was just mentally stronger, better able to cope with all the supernatural weirdness having helped Tom out at the lake, and still trying to understand the power from all of Pritch’s journals.
“Just a few months ago,” you admit. “It was this whole vegan challenge at work for the month but I missed yogurt a lot but giving up meat was pretty easy.”
“Where are you working now,” Stacy asks, taking a seat carefully, making sure not to turn her back on Noah.
“Oh,” you smile, closing your computer, resting your chin against your hand, “UBC, at the anthropology museum. It's why I-we moved here. I do financial analysis for their investments. Ava found it really funny that I got a job at a museum before her.”
“Oh,” Stacy wonders, glancing at Noah again, who's just as tense if the line of his shoulders is anything to go by, and the telling line of his mouth that reminds Stacy of the first and last time she tried to include him: a APUSH presentation that Noah had waved off and preferred to bomb. “You told Ava?”
She feels the sting of hurt but Ava makes the most sense considering you were closest to her and Lily. Not to mention Ava was still messing around with the occult. A heavy lead ball of anxiety always forms whenever Ava has shown Stacy her magic tricks.
You get the double meaning.
Noah pointedly ignores her, carrying a conversation about the best places to eat in the city with Sofi.
You force yourself to smile, “about the job yeah. Thought she'd laugh since she's the anthropologist. She called it the encroachment of late stage capitalism.”
“That sounds about right for Ava,” Stacy snorts.
You'd chosen Noah over her: over your friends. The choice had already been made before Stacy had even known this was an option.
You two were a packaged deal.
Stacy takes a deep breath, and turns her back on Noah, joining the light conversation of local things to do in Vancouver and how you had completely face planted while trying to ice skate.
“-and instead of helping me,” you tease, getting plates out for everyone, “Noah just sat back and laughed!”
“And took a video,” Noah points out. “You don't have any balance babe.”
“I wouldn't do you like that,” you wrinkle your nose, smiling fondly as Noah brings the food out of the oven, the smell filling the small house and suddenly Stacy’s mouth is watering.
“You have,” he replies all mock offended, “you left me in the cab!”
“I was very drunk,” you shrug shamelessly, then turn to Sofi and Connor with an explanation. “Too much fun on date night.”
“Shut up,” Noah utters, placing the food on the table, looking incredibly soft and it finally sinks in. He's alive. He's alive and you're together and while Stacy doesn't care for him, she's glad you're doing well.
She's still going to punch him the first chance she gets.
The food’s some of the best she's ever had.
*
She hugs you goodbye two hours later: a great big tight hug that says everything she hasn't been able to because of distance. She puts all her love and tenderness into hugging you. “It was so good seeing you,” Stacy says and means it. One day they'll talk about this.
But not now.
She's dragging Sofi into this.
You nod, hugging her back just as tight, before whispering in softly into her ear, “please don't tell anyone.”
And how could she refuse, with your sweet chocolate eyes looking at her like that, as if she holds everything you hold dear in her hands. It's easy for Stacy to make the choice to look away and say nothing.

Lily.
Britney makes them take a hundred selfies before they even leave the airport. Lily beams at the camera even as she pays for starbucks. “Aw man we should've tried tim hortons now that we're officially in Canada.” Lily muses, shooting you a text, letting you know she'd soon be out of the airport.
“But do they have peppermint frappuccinos,” Britney asks, leading the way as they head to the exit. Airports were always so big. It took forever to get anywhere.
“I'm not big on peppermint,” Lily comments even though Britney already knows that, before taking a long sip of her pink drink. She really had been craving a drink. That was another thing about planes: dehydration. Still, it would be worth it to visit you for the first time since you moved to Canada.
“I know,” Britney winks, “that's just more peppermint bark for me.”
*
Britney's the one that spots you first. Lily's taller than you, but still pretty short. “Your loser friends over there.” Britney teases and it shows how far she and Lily have come that they're able to laugh about the time wasted in high school where she bullied other kids including Lily.
Lily follows on her heels, fixing her coat to try and look cute. It had only been a three hour plane ride but it was three hours plus dealing with airport security so it felt closer to three years. Gosh it had almost been three years since she graduated college. Time just flew by.
Excitement bubbles up and Lily’s smiling hard when she sees you in an olive green jacket and grey hoodie combo, still the same as ever if happier now that you weren't stressing about school.
She had meant to visit you sooner but being an adult meant things often got in the way.
Then Lily spots Noah Marshall hovering behind you, laughing at something you just said , face lit up like a kid who's just been told they can finally dig into their Halloween candy. Except it can't be Noah because he's dead. Yet here he is, wearing a black coat, washout blue hoodie, and of course a beanie. If Jocelyn was here, she'd say he looks like an asshole wearing aviators indoors.
Removing any doubt of who he is, Lily having already come up with a reasonable explanation of you having coped with Noah's death by finding a lookalike, dies when he spots Britney and Lily before you. “Lily,” Noah grins as if he didn't die after trying to kill her, “you looked like someone kicked your puppy.”
You smack his shoulder. “Behave,” you tease as you try and smother a gasp. You meet her gaze sheepishly, but Lily's still too flabbergasted to respond.
“Aren't you supposed to be dead,” Britney asks.
He deadpans, “Mandela effect.”
This time, you dissolve into laughter.
Noah glances over at you with a smile, pleased with himself.
Lily finally manages, “explain.”
You nod, “let's get you settled in first.”
Britney hands her bag to Noah, “here. I need to carry Lily's bag.”
“Sure thing,” Noah snorts, taking her bag.
*
Lily had imagined Canada to be much more green. Like a national park green, with so much plant life she could smell it thick in the air, but it's pretty much just another downtown metropolitan area like Seattle. You'd really only moved a few hours away from Seattle so that made sense.
She keeps glancing over at Noah as if he'll disappear and this is some trick from whatever thing still lived in Westchester. But he's still there, flesh and blood, his arm draped around your shoulder as they stand by where she and Britney have taken a seat, bags under their feet. They had only brought carry on bags.
You're obviously together but Lily keeps getting stuck on the fact that Noah's alive.
She isn't surprised. Noah only ever had time for you that year; both of you slinking off when you thought no one was paying attention. Lily remembers seeing you hug Noah in some lonely corner of the school if you didn't skip fifth period math.
And Connor had said he'd seen you both out in town during school hours.
Maybe it's the glasses.
Noah won't be alive to her until she sees his entire face, leaving no room for error.
“Can't believe you're moving to Seattle!” You repeat because yeah Lily had gotten a nice job offer there.
“Neither can I,” Britney complains, “I like SF, and I'd like to live somewhere warm one day. Aren't there any major tech firms in Miami?”
“Nasa,” Lily says thoughtfully, “I didn't have the experience to apply though.”
Her girlfriend frowns, “You went to Berkeley though. That has to count for like ten years.”
Lily laughs.
“You should've shot your shot,” you agree.
“Isn't Florida super humid though,” Noah mentions tilting his head, reminding Lily that he's there and she can't help but flinch. “And there's tons of snakes and agitators everywhere.”
“I like snakes,” Britney notes.
He had been so sweet those last few weeks, Lily thinks to herself. Noah was always saying how she was much stronger because she could be kind even as everything was going to hell. In english, she'd burst into tears, sick and tired of having nightmares just to wake up to a living nightmare, and he'd chased after her, comforting her.
It had made his betrayal hurt all the more.
*
“So how exactly are you,” Lily asks, dancing around the subject. Surely it was rude to bring up that Noah had been dead.
“Alive,” he replies, quirking his brow, holding Britney's bag as he opens the door.
“Yeah. . .that.”
This time, when you and Noah look at each other, there's no boundless joy that fits in perfectly with the holiday season. You've even put up snowmen in the house's windows, and there's lights wrapped around the porch: off right now. It's just you looking at Noah with glassy eyes and Noah with an amount of tenderness in his eyes that Lily didn't know people were capable of in real life: the look people get when they're finally able to confess how in love they are in movies.
It's only there for a second and then Noah's making light of the whole situation, as if he can't stand to see that haunted look in your eyes, “Well you know what they say, when you wish upon a star-”
You roll your eyes, lightly smacking his arm, then changing your mind and squeezing his arm. “Don't be a dick.” Then you round your attention on Lily, “there's the shoe rack.” Before ushering the group into the living room. “I-I didn't,” you take a deep breath, tugging your coat off as you take a seat on a cheap navy cotton couch. “I guess I never stopped looking for a way,” you glance at Noah, “for a way to fix things. I mean, I still went back there for all the school breaks.”
You've stopped looking at Lily, gaze locked on Noah's. Pink dusts his cheeks and he ducks his head, looking alway, out into the quiet street, skyscrapers in the distance.
Britney purses her lips, listening intently. She heard accounts of this nature from Jocelyn. Dan knee better than to tell her anything about the woods back home.
“And I found it,” you finish without elaboration. Lily understands. Some things were, there were some things too awful to speak once again into being.
He slips his hand into yours, threading your fingers together.
It's sweet and though Lily's reservations remain, it's clear he loves you.
“Okay then,” Britney claps together, knowing full well she was ruining the moment, “how soon can we go shopping. I'm doing all my christmas shopping in Canada.”
“Because of the exchange rate,” Noah sneers, not missing a beat.
“Hardly,” Britney snaps back, “I'm a certified trophy wife now.” She smiles as she looks over at Lily who giggles.
*
It's two in the morning and Lily keeps tossing and turning. It's warm with the heater chugging away in the night. But she can't sleep.
They'd spent the whole day out, exploring the city. You'd gotten a few days off work. Britney had made you both carry bags and bags of gifts as promised.
At least she'd have plenty of time to wrap them. December had only just begun.
But Lily can't sleep.
It isn't the nightmares of her childhood: of Jane and all the things she wishes she had said no to, or those terrible months in which Lily had nearly died from sheer terror, but a pool of anxiety masquerading as restlessness.
She gets up, having visited you before back in Seattle, back when you had shared an apartment with Ava and a revolving door of roommates during college, and wonders if Ava knows. Ava, who messes around in the more supernatural corners of the world, who you had always been closest too.
Lily gets up and decides maybe a glass of water will calm her down as she chews over the idea of Noah and her both under the same roof.
She slips into the dark kitchen, with that weird anxiety that she was sneaking around that she could never shake even knowing that you wouldn't mind her going through your kitchen. She slips into the kitchen and nearly faints at the sight of Noah at the table.
He's sitting in pitch dark.
Only it isn't-
“-your eyes,” Lily hisses, breaking the calm of the twilight hours.
Noah's sitting in the dark reading.
Because his eyes are glowing blue like redfield when she was little and redfield was a friend and hadn't shown it's true nature.
Noah's eyes are glowing.
“Shit,” Noah says gently, reaching up to flip the lights on.
He moves slowly, but Lily still flinches.
“I'm sorry Lils,” he says, those three words encompassing so many years and the darkest parts of her life, casting a shadow over her whole life she can never escape because Westchester is home but it's also where it happened and Noah's a big part of why Lily spent a year having panic attacks: having flashbacks to that awful game. He says it and the last itchy scab over the deep wound Lily has harbored for years flakes off.
Lily does a little nod of acceptance, but keeps her eyes on his unnaturally reflective eyes, a light in the dark.
She swallows thickly.
That glass of water sounds amazing right about now.
“What are you doing reading in the dark,” she asks. It seems Noah had been right all those years ago; Lily was able to keep trying, a flower growing in a crack of cement.
“Studying,” Noah says calmly. “It's pretty boring actually. Sort of makes me wish I was still haunting the woods.” His smile is small, testing the waters.
Lily-she can't. She shits her eyes, shaking her head once, slow.
“Sorry,” he says easily, shutting a thick textbook, “coping mechanism.”
Lily thinks about all those nights she'd wake up in the middle of a nightmare, “is it a glitch then?” She tilts her head curiously, the way she spent hours going over the same file of code checking for any bugs: and mistakes that had slipped through the cracks.
“You could call it that. . .but they reckon that it's more of a give and take situation.” He fiddles with the sleeve of his shirt. “The power takes people but gives them power, and when, when they brought me back, I took something with me.”
For once, dread doesn't fill Lily at the mention of what lies in the woods back home.
Lily nods, and pours herself a glass of water. “What are you studying?”
“Psychology,” Noah answer's, “trying to do developmental psychology. I want to,” he waits a beat before finishing in a rush. “I'd like to be a child therapist.”
“I thought you wanted to go to culinary school,” Lily questions. She remembers you mentioning that once. Then there's the fact that Noah had brought her lunch to school a few times when he'd learned that Lily's parents had forced her into a diet.
“I did,” he shrugs. “Turns out I like to cook for myself more than anything.”
Lily smiles.
She's glad he's able to move on like she has.
“You know I use to have nightmares. Nothing really helped apart from-.”
“Tiring myself out,” you both finish.
Noah smiles grimly.
Lily drinks he water and keeps him company for a while.

Lucas
Logically, Lucas knows that Canada is not that different from the states yet he still feel like the place should be more exotic as he steps off the plane for work. It's grueling work really, the pay is bad and he flies economy more than is healthy for his back, but he likes keeping private corporations on their toes. That was the whole point of environmental science, though going to law school for the same thing is starting to look more and more appealing everyday.
He just feels like he doesn't have the weight to truly go after these people and hates having to pass off the cases when he knows he could do more.
But law school is. . .stressful.
He'd have already started his third year of law if he had just gone straight to law school after undergrad.
Lucas wonders if he's ready to manage that type of stress.
He gets off the plane and has to go directly to the non-profits office. It's a tiny little thing in a rougher part of the city; gone are the shiny sports cars and whole foods.
There's boxes of paperwork dating back from the 60s and he gets to work, drinking the cheap donut shop coffee that the office head, an amicable black man who still has a rhythmic african accent that Lucas isn't worldly enough to place, gives him with a shrug, “got to support our local businesses eh?”
Lucas nods. “Tell me about it. I feel like I missed out on the New York that was happening.” Ava had sent him a buy back the block patch and he really hadn't been surprised because she had always been opinionated and headstrong about it. If she was the town witch, well then she was going to be the biggest baddest witch.
He types a reminder into his notes to get her a souvenir.
He uses yelp to find a cheap diner, where he continues to pour over a thick manila folder--have to break up the work--and finds that he can smell the ocean here even when he can't exactly see it.
Lucas sets a reminder to himself to go enjoy the beach at least once.
Then he sees the reminder to call and ask Stacy where you were living. Lucas half wanted it to be a surprise, but worried he'd miss you.
He knew you liked going out dancing. And he had arrived on a Friday night.
It was unorthodox.
He usually worked strictly in the states since each country had their own laws and environmental precedent established by the courts. And alright, Lucas’ phone had a lot of law school tabs open. He was only twenty four. That wasn't too old for law school.
Weren't some students in legally blonde in their thirties?
Experience could give him an edge.
Lucas calls Stacy but it goes straight to voice mail.
Right, time difference.
He'd have to wait until tomorrow.
Having not exchanged any money as of yet, Lucas pays for his breakfast for dinner with his card and hopes the fee isn't too bad. Then he stuffs the folders and decides to walk to his hotel.
It's an hour long walk through town but years of being incredibly stressed had left him with the purposeful choice of slowing down when he could. Sometimes it felt like forcing himself to slow down, but he always felt better after a walk through a new city or sitting down with a fictional book even when he swore he didn't feel all wound up.
As far as cheap diners, tonight's was good and he had fun trying poutine.
Lucas walks through the tall buildings and wishes he hadn't worn a suit jacket. He should've worn a plain shirt or one of those gag gifts Andy was always sending him from various thrift stores. It might be further up north than even he grew up, but it was still hot in the summer.
Walking an hour in a casual suit was not his greatest idea, but the city carried the same vibrant energy the new york had. The energy that had encouraged Lucas to go to a house party--once.
He's walking by a street full of dive bars all blaring out nostalgic hits from his teenage years from Hannah Montana, which okay, to Kesha which sounded about right, and of course, Blackpink. The chalkboards outside all promise cheap drinks but Lucas isn't a big drinker.
He isn't sure how much of that is avoiding any substance that could get him hooked or if he's making that choice because he really doesn't like alcohol.
Lucas is just about through, about to by a monolithic building that has a bunch of displays in the windows, when he does a double take.
Noah fucking Marshall is smoking on the curb outside a bar, face flushed.
There's no doubt about it. Lucas would know that asshole anywhere. The same sharp jawline and prominent nose, brown hair curling around his ears only a few inches showered than it had in high school. He's wearing dark jeans and a black leather jacket over a white shirt and looking way too happy for a murderer.
Noah Marshall wearing aviators at night like the rat bastard he is!
The intense feelings of rage and wanting to hit something until the world righted itself surges in Lucas’ chest until there's a white hot anger in his throat and red clouding his vision.
He blacks out.
One second he's furiously gapping at the man-
the next
-Lucas is standing over Noah Marshall, knuckles on fire having just sucker punched the fucker.
Oh shit.
Noah looks just as surprised for a second as he looks up, blood beading up where his lips split open.
Lucas watches as recognition hits those bambi blue eyes---wait, blue.. .?
And then Noah shrugs, the ghost of a smile forming on his lips as he states, “yeah. I deserved that.”
There's a couple people looking over.
Lucas is still pissed as Noah gets up, dusting himself off and looking at the barely smoked cigarette on the ground as if he wants to smoke it, before grabbing the glasses and placing them back on instead.
Then, he grabs another cigarette, “want one,” he offers Lucas who no, wouldn't want one: wouldn't want anything from Noah if he was drowning and Noah had the only life jacket.
He was good with drowning.
Thanks.
Lucas, anger still fizzing under his skin like boiling water, asks, “how the fuck are you here!”
Noah shrugs, before slurring and it's then that Lucas realizes the other man is flushed drunk, “I live here,” without an ounce of sarcasm.
“You know exactly what I mean,” Lucas says, curling his lip and crossing his arms over his chest.
“Oh you know me. I'm just plotting world domination and decided Vancouver would be the perfect location for my evil villain lair. I've got a neon sign and everything.”
Lucas rolls his eyes, grinding his teeth together. “Do you always have to be such an asshole?”
Noah spreads his hands out and proceeds to do jazz hands, before taking a drag of his cigarette.
Fuck, Lucas feels like punching him again.
He's really thinking about it as he watches Noah, sure the idiot will try something again, when he hears your voice as you stumble out of the bar, “I knew it! You were going out for a smoke break!”
Noah's entire demeanor shifts, no longer the boy Lucas has built up in his head as the cause of all their problems. Over the years, he's decided that Noah had known from the start. In the depths of his denial, Lucas had told himself that Noah had kidnapped Dan. But, you appear, and Noah's turns bright pink as he hurried to stomp out the cigarette you've already seen like a naughty school boy, even as he turns and smiles as if you hung the sun in the sky and painted the night stars. It's lovesick the way you both look at each other with the fondness of ancient couples out for a walk in the park, lost in their own world.
However the fuck he's alive, Lucas realizes that this Noah, the real living Noah, has been just as freaked as the rest of them. It's something he hasn't thought about in years.
Noah had lost Jane.
It's enough for Lucas to unclench his hands even if he's still seething because what the hell, he still offered them all up on a silver platter. Redfield or Jane--whatever it was in the end--had given Ava powers and she hadn't stabbed your group of friends in the back.
You cross the distance quickly, and throw your arms around his middle, tipsy. That's probably why your smile is so pure-untouched by all the trauma and boring adult problems like remembering to pay the bills and having to call the cable company for the fifth time.
You don't even notice Lucas.
“What happened to your face,” you ask, raising your hand to cup Noah's cheek, frowning.
Noah nods over at Lucas.
You finally notice him.
“Lucas,” you wag your finger at him, still cuddled up to the man in question, “You can't punch Noah. Do you know how much trouble I went through to get him back?”
It shouldn't be possible, but Noah turns pinker.
“Aw babe,” Noah teases you with a familiarity that carries depth.
This wasn't a new development then.
“You really do care about me.”
This time, you round on Noah, wagging your finger menacingly, “Don’t be an idiot! Of course I love you. You're the best thing that ever happened to me!”
Which has Lucas majorly side eyeing you.
Sure, Noah had grown up to be tall and not unattractive, as far as pasty white boys were concerned, but he'd still tried to kill everyone.
Noah also looks skeptical.
“What are you doing in town Lucas,” you then ask.
“Work,” Lucas replies blandly, as he tries to come to terms with this reality altering discovery. “You were dead.”
“That's not entirely true,” Noah muses philosophically, “Physically I was dead but technically I was still roaming the woods as a monster.”
Reflexively, you interject, resting your hand on his chest, “you're not a monster.”
“I thought you liked the shape of water.”
Which sends you squealing. “Noah!”
Lucas doesn't get it. You are the strongest person he knows who can talk to anyone and has a sense of determination that rivals a gold medalist: the one who kept everyone together during one of the shiftiest times in his life, and he's who you settle for! “If you have to say technically, you've already lost the argument.”
You snort.
Noah rolls his eyes good naturedly.
“Wait,” you realize, eyes going wide, “does that mean you're younger than me now.”
Noah tilts his head in thought, “physically. . .”
“Pretty sure that means yes,” Lucas adds, wondering how long Noah had been back for.
“Oh my god, I'm stealing from the cradle!”
Noah looks incredibly affronted as he blinks rapid looking down at you like you'd grown a second head.
“You mean cradle robbing?”
“I'm. . .twenty four,” Noah says. Not even he sounds convinced.
“Twenty two,” you correct archly. Then look at Lucas with a friendly smile, “you want to go get pho?”
“Right now!” Lucas checks his watch. It was already midnight. He should've been at his hotel room sleeping by now.
You nod.
Noah elaborates, “it's pricey but the broth hits different. They have some pretty good view of the city too.”
Two years. Noah had been back for two years and you never said anything.
Lucas can put up with Noah for a few hours to spend time with you. After all, you were the one who was putting up with him for life apparently.
“Should we let-,” you begging to ask, amusement dancing in your eyes, city lights reflected in the dark brown hue that had a quality of depth that made it easy to open up to you.
“Nah,” Noah smirks, “Sheer chatted some dude up, they won't even realize-”
“Rahul will though.”
“Psst, it's fine.”
You've both built a life here, far removed from any traces of Westchester. Maybe that's where he had gone wrong. Lucas had been so desperate to escape he's never found a place of his own, and still haunted by his one and only home: a place he wants nothing to do with. He needed to make a new home.
Law school wasn't sounding too shabby.
*
Noah leads the way.
*
A lightbulb turns on.
“What's with your eyes?” Lucas asks.
Noah chuckles, “sometimes you fall into a vat of radioactive waste because that's just the type of luck you have.”
You shake your head, amused. “Side effect. It's nothing serious. We checked.”
That doesn't comfort Lucas at all.
He wonders if Connor or Tom could fix that just to be sure Noah wouldn't suddenly go Redfield on you while you were sleeping.
Ugh, that was one mental image he didn't need.
“So what terrible horrifying government secret are you here investigating and does it have to do with a company hiding vats of radioactive waste,” you ask.
Lucas takes the bait.
He could and has talked people's ears off about the loose regulations on place on waste disposal among an array of industries.

Andy, Dan, Tom
This all starts with two things as far as Tom is concerned. First, they've all been talking for ages about doing a guys road trip after everyone still around Westchester had driven down to visit Ava. Not that the girls weren't fun, Tom thought to himself, but it just sounded nice.
He never had a sleepover growing up so this would make up for that. At least that was the idea.
Then Lucas called Andy freaking out about Noah Marshall and Connor could only nod and go, “yeah he was with them about a year. . almost two since we visited. I think it's already been two years.”
Which was a total mindfuck because why hadn't he mentioned anything.
Why hadn't Stacy?
Tom’s done some research into necromancy and it never ends well which is why they pile into Dan’s prius and hit the road to Vancouver Canada. Sans Connor because Vy is pregnant and Connor is glued to her side. “I think they were dating,” he also adds, bookmarking some cases around New Orleans that scream supernatural activity. That throws everyone for another mind loop as he clues the Pine Springs gang who wasn't there that senior year, why Noah Marshall shouldn't be alive, much less freely walking around. The only person who takes the news relatively well is Dan, who scratches his chin thoughtfully before saying, “that makes sense,” he nods to himself.
Andy rounds on him, ready to kick Noah's ass on sight which Tom will totally back him up on. Tom still can't handle spiders for which Danni and Jocelyn continue to tease him about.
“How in the fuck does that make sense,” Andy seeths, “that motherfucker landed you in a coma! I broke my leg and had to repeat senior year!”
Dan adds, “well you know, they spoke about how tragic his death was. And they used to have nightmares of him dying-”
They all turn to look at Dan.
“What,” Andy says, “when did they tell you that?”
Dan shrugs, “well they were always coming over that year and making a point to spend time with everyone but I always thought they looked sad and thinking about them alone on the edge of town,” he trails off. He’d never brought up your parents absence, but it was clearly felt. “So I went over to theirs when I could,” Dan finishes.
Andy shakes his head, “no. I don’t know what or how, but people don’t just come back from the dead and everything's sunshine and roses,” he crosses his arms against his chest and fumes across the entire state of New York.
Tom has to agree with Andy. There’s nothing in their research to suggest that people can just come back okay. Everything taken by the power ended up twisted into a funhouse version; it never ended well.
They stretch their legs in Cleveland, Andy still scowling. Every now and then he’ll rant about how Noah has to be up to something and he has to go save you from dying. Tom doesn’t bring it up, prefering to let Andy work through it now and wrap his head around Noah Marshall being alive on the car ride up to Canada, but Connor had said Noah’s been back for at least two years--wouldn’t he already have done something? He thinks of you and how you had been alone with Noah at the end. Maybe you had kept some things to yourself.
It was hard to relive trauma aloud.
It made it more real.
Tom sends Imogen a few snaps in Toledo as Andy blasts The White Stripes, to fit his mood.
He wishes Parker had been able to get the days off. Having someone at a distance from the situation might help everyone keep their cool. He knows he won’t stop Andy from beating Noah’s ass.
Dan picks up postcards in Chicago for everyone, as they sit by the famous Bean eating pizza.
“I can’t tell if this is better or if I’m fucking starving,” Andy admits, on his third slice.
Dan snorts, looking up from his lap where he’s writing out the postcards, wanting to send them quickly, “so they make it back before we do.”
Tom takes a walk around the plaza, thinking that fall really was the best weather, cold enough for a sweater without being too freezing and the sun didn’t burn.
They don’t stop in Wisconsin or Minnesota except for gas and Mcdonalds.
Andy sleeps as Tom takes over the driving.
Dan’ll be up next.
“Please play something other than Beach House,” Tom complains at Dan, “this is going to make me fall asleep.”
Dan chuckles, “Its good night driving music.”
“No Dan,” Tom shakes his head with a smile
The sun rises, and Tom gets to sleep.
He wakes up in Rapid City, South Dakota and they have to recreate that awful Hilary Clinton, “just chilling in Rapid City,” Andy says mockingly.
Dan almost chokes on his coffee.
Montana is so fucking beautiful and Tom’s seized with the sudden urge to come live out here. “We could totally do it,” he tells the other men, “it’s cheap out here. We could buy a huge piece of land and never have to deal with any bullshit again. Our friend group could do it. Danni’s really handy and Lily could set us up with wifi!”
“Bro,” Andy says gravely, “you know I love you, but I’m not moving to Montana with you.”
Dam smiles softly, “Danni would have a field day taking pictures here.”
Montana is beautiful and green and none of the nature here has that heavy feeling the woods in Westchester do, but they’re tired and exhausted from being on the road for the last two days. They crash at a motel 8 and sleep for the next twelve hours.
*
They ask this beautiful woman who's wearing birks and has a tote bag emblazoned “love your mother” with a planet earth painted on, to take a picture of them in front of Pike Place Market. Dan has her number before Tom’s done sending the pictures to his Pine Springs groupchat, teasing Parker about having stayed behind to yell at teenagers smoking weed while driving boats around the lake: accidents waiting to happen.
Tom has never been to Seattle.
He knows most of his friends from Westchester have to visit you or Ava, and he's grown close to Ava, but at the time he was more of a friend of a friend and so never flew up to Seattle.
“Is it lame I'm still tired,” Andy asks, as they find a park to sit down at. It felt so good to be able to lay in the grass instead of sitting cramped up in the car.
“Age is starting to hit us.” Dan muses. “Either of you want to come get some things with me.”
His friend snorts, “Haven't you gotten enough gifts for everyone?” Which, yeah, Dan has been accumulating a small horde of souvenirs in the back for all his friends. He's a thoughtful guy. Tom’s not surprised the man’s a nurse. If he'd had Dan as a nurse when he was a kid, he might not completely hated going to the doctors office.
“I was kinda thinking about getting something from every state,” Dan says, blushing red as he rubs the back of his neck.
“I think it's sweet,” Tom says, clasping a hand on the other man's back. “Cheesy, but sweet.”
Andy shakes his head, “we should've gotten there by now. If only we hadn't stopped in Montana-”
“Noah's not going anywhere,” Dan points out, “you can kick his ass tonight or tomorrow.”
“They know we’re coming,” Andy scowls, “He could be halfway around the world by now.”
“Just remember Lucas already sucker punched him,” Tom offers his friend as consolation.
Dan shakes his head a little, but stays silent. Tom hasn't been able to get Dan’s feelings on the whole situation. He can’t imagine him being completely ambivalent or cool with Noah getting off scot free, but then again, Tom doesn’t know every little detail.
No one talks about it in detail even in their little power club that Connor and him started up.
He gets it.
It’s not something anyone wants to linger on.
And he understands better than most.
His monster was different, but no less horrifying.
“I’ll go with you,” Tom offers Dan, because this is a new city and even though the point is to go see what's up with Noah, and make sure he isn’t still the shadow monster he was the last time Tom saw him, he still wants to make the most of it.
“Two hours,” Andy says with a warning. “Two hours or I leave you in Seattle.”
“Sure, sure,” Tom shakes his head. Andy would never do them like that.
“If you’re coming we should go to the space needle,” Dan says thoughtfully, taking out his phone to begin google mapping the places he wants to hit up.
“Two hours!” Andy calls back from where he’s watching a couple people play basketball.
*
Tom discovers he has a thing about heights as they ascend via an elevator. It’s a slow day and the elevator operator talks him through it, telling him all sorts of bad puns and more information about the space needle then he can remember. “Sarah Palin came by the other day,” the woman who looks to be about their age with green ringlets and a friendly smile that doesn’t seem to be forced like most customer service workers smile (smile through the pain), “and she said she could see Alaska from here! Get it?”
Tom tries to smile, but yeah, he’s never doing this again. “Did you see the masked singer with Sarah Palin?”
The girl nods, “how the mighty have fallen. You think there's an alternate universe where she was vice president and insead Joe Biden’s on Dancing with the Stars?”
Tom’s laugh dies in his throat as the elevator jolts to a stop. It certainly feels like a huge jolt, but that may be his anxiety making everything elven times worse.
“Well thank you for riding air force two,” she salutes as Tom finally steps into the platform.
Sweet, sweet relief.
He sort of has to go take a picture or two off the viewing platform. He’s made it this far.
“She was totally into you,” Dan says, stepping in to take Tom’s mind off things.
“Was not.”
“Totally was.”
Tom rolls his eyes, “she was just being nice.”
“Sure man, sure. But she was.”
*
They arrive even later than Andy had predicted. It’s midnight and proof that they had dallied in Seattle for two long. This is the first time Dan has ever left the country so of course they stop and take pictures.
And then they stop and eat at the cute little cabin lodge just off the highway.
And even Andy forgets about the Noah business.
They pull into the street, disappearing from the city in the turn onto the street. It’s crazy how much of a difference a street can make. A little quiet row of houses tucked under the twinkling lights of the city lights.
Your house is a small one story thing, clearly an older home from before cookie cutter houses came into fashion, and with a certain amount of charm even with the dead plant by the doorstep: closer to a cottage than a house like something out of Snow White. There’s even a ouija board doormat that Tom thinks is completely in line with your humor and probably Noah’s as well. He just doesn’t remember much about Noah when he was alive. Last time Tom saw Noah, Noah was saying sorry to the birds. People could change.
Right?
It’s not like Noah had gone all Zodiac Killer on his friends.
The lights are off and Tom feels kind of bad that he’s about to wake you up, but he also really wants to crash in an actual bed.
Dan knocks on your door as Andy paces behind Tom.
A minute later, you peak your head out the door. Your navy blue sweater is cuffed around your hands, clearly meant for someone taller, helping to stave off the autumn chill, and grey flannel pajama pants. You rub your eyes with the back of your hand as you yawn. “You’re here,” you smile and hug Dan with one arm, “do you need any help with the bags.”
“The bags can wait until tomorrow,” Dan answers for the group, “I just want to sleep in a real bed.”
You snort, “don’t actually have a guest room,” you admit, keeping your voice down as you usher them all inside, “but I do have a pretty comfortable pull out couch and way too many quilts. I have to stop going to Victoria Island.”
Andy looks around, tense.
Tom’s a little surprised when you hug him too. “Want any food? There’s a ton of leftovers. Noah’s been stress baking. He has a bunch of exams this week.,” you say with such casualness.
“We already ate,” Dan offers, “there was this cool looking log cabin that sold me on pumpkin spice muffins.”
“Where is Noah,” Andy asks, cutting right to the quick.
You look at him pointedly as you explain, “he went to sleep early. He’s got school at like 7 am. I have no clue why. . .college was all about afternoon classes for me.”
Andy wisely, let’s it go for the moment.
You show them where things are, the couch is already extended. The TV’s sitting on a pile of textbooks with a nintendo switch right next to it.
Tom is out before his head hits the pillow.
*
They wake up and eat the promised leftovers as you rush to find the spare key to leave with your friends before you too have to go to work. “I would've asked for the day off like I did for the rest of the week,” you hastily explain, filling the electric kettle with water, “but it was Maureen’s birthday and I would’ve felt like such a dickhead.”
You make Dan promise to come look through the Museum you work at before it closes, and then you’re running off with a tumbler full of tea, putting a hand through your hair as if that’ll save it from looking like a mess. Tom’s unsurprised at your easy nature when they’re all imposing, making no secret of the real reason they had driven all the way to the other coast of North America.
Andy conducts a walkthrough of the house, leaving the sole bedroom of the house alone.
Dan shakes his head, flipping through the TV channels, before logging onto your netflix account, the most recent show having been played was Avatar the Last Airbender. “Anything you want to watch?”
“The good place,” Tom offers, “everyone’s always saying it's good.”
Dan shrugs. “I wouldn’t know. I don’t have netflix.”
Andy comes back with a picture frame clutched in his hand, “He’s such a dick!” Red seeping into his neck as he fumes.
Tom looks over at the picture, but it’s just a photo any normal couple would have hanging around their house: a blurry polaroid of you and Noah, each with a red solo cup at some house party, with the date, over a year ago, written on the border. He gets it, he does. And Andy’s his friend, so he nods.
Dan on the other hand, “okay. . .”
Andy disappears back down the hall. “I just don’t understand how they kept this from us! I mean-after what he did!”
Tom nods the same way he always had when his dad would start lecturing him in japanese even though his japanese is limited to whatever the japanese equivalent of Dora the explorer teaching spanish is.
“Probably so we wouldn’t freak out,” Dan offers, not looking away from the screen.
Andy marches back into the living room with a deep set frown, “Noah was fine offering us up to that monster and now they’re here playing house like nothing ever happened.” He sits down next to Tom, head in his hand. “I just don’t get it.”
He clasps a hand on Andy’s shoulder in comfort.
“Maybe they just wanted to forget as much as we did,” Dan notes quietly. “Some of us left and never really went back.” He’s talking about Lily and Lucas, who only visits during the holidays, then there’s Ava out in Arizona, busy doing field research and only going to Westchester in between jobs. Dan’s an hour away, a world away, near Stacy.
It’s really just Andy and Connor who stayed.
He’s in Pine Springs, a good hour to the west of Westchester.
“He died,” Andy grumbles out, “it could’ve easily been them, or any of us, or all of us. We’re lucky no one else did.”
Dan frowns, looking over at Andy, “I don’t like this anymore than you do. I’m not jazzed that Noah’s been back for years and we just found out. But I trust their judgement.”
“Necromancy is serious business,” Tom says, breaking the staring contest that’s started between the two friends.
*
Noah’s at least a little bit of a coward, as he saunters up to them, running a hand through his hair as he takes a seat at the table.
You had said this diner had the best malai kofta in the neighborhood.
He’s resting expression is still skewed towards sour, even as there’s other noticeable changes from the Noah Tom remember’s who’d kept to himself in school. His hair cut into a flattering undercut, clothes no longer on the angsty scruffy side but still decidedly casual as he opts for a dark palette, and of course, the blue eyes that seem to glow even in the afternoon light Lucas had mentioned in great detail. Noah’s clean shaven and lean, a backpack slung over his shoulder.
He only spares Tom a second’s glance before he focuses in on you, his lips quirk-ing up in a small smile. Sitting down, you lean forward expectantly as he plants a kiss on your cheek by way of greeting, before saying, “C’s make degrees right?”
“Mhm,” you nod, “but you did fine so it doesn’t matter. I ordered you the chicken and waffles. That’s what you usually get right?”
“Actually,” Noah starts, clearly about to tease you.
You shove his shoulder lightly, “beggars can’t be choosers.”
Dan extends an olive branch, “hey Noah.”
Which Andy immediately shoots down, “so it’s true.”
Tom’s only glad they’re already sitting and yeah, Noah’s a coward for meeting them in public, not that it had stopped Lucas from sucker punching him. It probably won’t stop Andy, only he’s sandwiched in between Dan and Tom and there’s no way Dan is getting up and out just so Andy can punch Noah. That’s not the kind of friend Dan is. Dan’ll take someone away to cool off, sprouting lines about being the bigger person, but Tom thinks that sometimes a punch is well earned.
Noah nods, sobering up, rating his arms on the table. “Yeah. It’s still. . . it’s still a trip nearly four years later.”
You cover his hand with yours, giving Noah’s hand a squeeze.
Now that they’re here with Noah, a burst of curiosity that’s been brewing in the back of Tom’s mind finally surges forward. “Do your eyes always glow? Or is it light a cat’s iridescence and that’s why you can read in the dark?”
“Gee, let me give you the paperwork the doctor diagnosed me with after I explained that my sister became a shadow monster and I came back to life. He was super nice and helpful about everything. We really don’t pay doctors enough.”
Andy rolls his eyes, “So are you still a monster or not.”
Noah frowns, before leading forward, gripping a glass of ice in hand pointedly, lifting it off the table, watching his own action with a sad fascination, “you can’t begin to imagine how nice it is to be solid again--to be more than a lingering ghost who can barely remember who it used to be.”
Which doesn’t answer the question but--
Some monsters were all too human for comfort. And some monstrous beings ended up friends and allies back in Pine Springs.
*
You and Dan walk up ahead arm in arm, chatting about everything from how cozy ll bean’s wool socks were to how you wanted to branch out and leave your job but it just couldn't be a bank, working in a cubical all day seemed like a death sentence. Dan fills you in on the news from back home and you both catch up as you walk at a leisurely pace back to your home.
Somehow, Noah manages to be patient as Tom rattles off question after question.
“Do you remember much?”
“What was it like coming back?”
“Can you do any magic thought,” he purses his lips in thought, “that doesn’t tell us much, since Ava’s out there levitating feathers.”
“Are any of your other senses better?”
“Do you have any other changes after coming back?”
“Can you speak to animals now?”
“Do you ever get a craving for human flesh?”
“Your limbs don’t fall off or anything? Right?”
“You have all your memories back?”
“Do you ever see any ghosts?”
“Can you see ghosts?”
Noah answers them patiently, if amused, as Andy skulks behind, clearly listening in on the conversation.
“How did they bring you back,” Tom finally asks, having spent countless nights researching necromancy. It had crept up in the Pine Spring’s society books, journals detail all sort of gorey accounts of their attempts to harness the power to gain power over the dead and living, but none of it had ever amounted to anything. At least in the best case.
One member had rotted away from the inside out, black mold blooming in his lungs, incurable as he choked to death after trying to raise a simple cat from the dead.
Noah tenses up, glancing over to where you’re laughing as Dan does a spot on Bernie impression about how it’s time to once again, “ask for a The man from U.N.C.L.E. sequel,” before meeting Tom’s gaze again. “You’ve formed a little club to keep the power away from people right?”
He nods, “I just-I don’t want more people to go through what we have,” he explains. They had to be proactive and learn so that no one else would stumble upon the power and exploit it to violent ends. Ava’s magic wasn’t derived from the power. Tom had double checked that. Ava’s magic was her own through her own sheer will.
But the power-that was something else entirely.
He swallows thickly.
Nothing had happened so far. And he couldn’t tell if their plan was working, or if they had gotten lucky. It had been a handful of years. But then, a decade had passed between Jane Marshall’s death and her awakening.
“And no one else ever will,” Noah says forlornly.
“Explain,” Andy says, walking up on Noah’s other side.
The man looks up at you, as you and Dan wait by the street corner for the rest of the group to catch up, and he shakes his head. “All you need to know is the power won’t be a problem again.”
*
Tom runs the problem over and over in his mind as they explore Vancouver and Andy continues to get digs in at Noah while Noah lets him.
*
He thinks about it as Andy makes everyone watch #Alive. And then Dan reminds them how obsessed everyone was with Inception when it came out. And Tom thinks about Noah’s words. And then you suggest watching something lighter: Zoolander.
*
Tom plays Noah’s words over in his head as he stares up at the ceiling, listening to Andy’s snores.
*
He puzzles over what Noah meant, why he didn’t want to bother you with it, as he drives back across the continent.
*
The power takes.
*
The power gives.
*
He gets it as they stop for gas in New York.
*
Oh, you really must love him.
*
*

Ava
Ava walks into Tom’s house out in Pine springs. It’s summer and she’s ready to spend the entire week swimming and continuing the search for a black lipstick that won’t stain. Fenty came pretty close.
There’s tons of cars in the driveway and she knows she’s the last one to get there; she always did like an entrance.
She tries the doorknob before knocking, hearing the laughter and conversation carry outside. The house is unlocked so she lets herself in; she likes to make entrances, guilty as charged, before following the sound of voices into the back porch overlooking the lake.
Tom had lucked out in buying this place during the summer the lady of the lake terrorized the town.
She’s frozen in shock when she sees Noah sitting with everyone like he hasn't been dead for over eight years. He’s sitting with an arm around you, beer in his other hand, talking with Lily, in a faded AC/DC shirt and dark jeans despite the heat.
Ava pinches herself to make sure she isn’t dreaming.
“Ava,” Lily cries, spotting her, “you’re here.”
“What the fuck!”
Realization dawns on your face as Noah looks over at the resident goth chick who’s withered into a refined goth woman, less fishnet and more victorian mourning shirts paired with flared black and white leggings, for the first time in eight years and seven months.
“Hey Ava,” he says, lifting his hand up in greeting from where it’s resting on your shoulder.
Your face heats up, as you look at Ava, realizing you’d never gotten around to telling her. Not when you’d visited her for Thanksgiving even though she refused to participate in a propaganda holiday that “perpetuates colonialism” or the time last year when you’d gone to support her big lecture at UMississipi. It had never seemed the right time and now the time to calmly explain was gone.
“Someone explain before I light him on fire,” Ava utters, feeling heat grow in her fingertips. It was easy after years of practice. She was toying with the idea of buying a house in Salem.
Noah doesn’t even flinch.
How could he, having grown up with Jane for a sister that had gone around filling people shoes with mud and shoving people into pools with a laugh. That girl had been fearless, and Ava has long thought if she’d been an inch more scared, you and Jane never would have gone into those ruins.
It almost warms Ava’s cold dead heart.
Ha.
If Ava had sometimes been the third wheel with you and Jane, then Noah had been the ugly duckling waiting for a scrap of attention because Jane shone bright, a sunflower soaking up light, thriving on attention. Maybe Noah hadn’t been all that bothered to let his sister take the lead as kids, even as he grumbled about the trouble they were sure to get into, but neither Marshall twin had cared about anyone’s attention more than yours.
Jane had always been a limpet, her hand in yours.
Ava had been too independent even at nine to always go along with Jane, or want a friend that close.
But you didn’t just go along with Jane, you encouraged her, and dragged Noah along when Jane got too caught up in her made up games to remember to play nice. Noah who even at nine seemed clued into the fact that you were hurt that your parents were never around, something that never occurred to Jane.
So she’s not surprised that Noah and you are a thing.
Figures.
You’d kissed more than one white boy that could vaguely pass for Noah if you had enough to drink in college even if you had only dated twice and neither had been Noah Marshall knockoffs.
It’s glaringly obvious in hindsight.
What she doesn’t get is how he’s alive.
And everyone’s just cool with it.
“I thought you already knew,” Dan says.
Lily looks at you, “didn’t you tell Ava first?”
You raise a brow, “I thought Lucas told everyone?”
Lucas shrugs, wearing a suit in the summer, “I did. I just figured Ava already knew”
Stacy sips her cocktail, “awkward.”
“Wow,” Noah jokes with a grin, “you guys are terrible friends.”
Andy almost chokes on his beer, sending Noah a look that would’ve made Medusa jealous.
Danni shakes her head, “too soon dude, too soon.”
Maybe she should move into Cora’s old house. That way she could keep up with her friends' news.
How the hell did she miss Noah coming back to life.
That was metal as fuck.
She and you would have words about keeping secrets.
“Just give me the strongest drink you can make,” she says with a shake of her head, taking a seat next to Imogen, the resident mixologist.

dream lover | lee donghyuck
mafia au, enemies to lovers!haechan (if you squint).
summary: in which donghyuck’s father has forbidden him from ever speaking to you, because your father is his enemy, but donghyuck manages to fall in love with you anyway. and he saves your life.
warnings: none!
requested by @cloudyangers! back in like october, and i just remembered it the other night when i couldn’t sleep and so i decided to write it. it’s not entirely what the request asked for, but it’s what i came up with. i’m actually quite proud of this one! i hope you all enjoy.
word count: 2,395 words.
“so, y/n, what are you doing this weekend?” donghyuck says, quickly taking a seat next to you and putting his arm around you.
“what’s it to you?” you ask, pushing him off of you.
“i’m just curious,” he teases.
“you know that i don’t know anything about what my dad’s up to, donghyuck, so just stop. learn to mind your own business or else.” you threaten. it’s more of an empty threat, though, because you could never live with yourself if anyone got physically hurt because of you. which is why you stayed out of all of your father’s business endeavors.
your father and donghyuck’s fathers have always been rivals, and while your father told you that his business with donghyuck’s father had nothing to do with you and you were free to socialize with donghyuck if you wanted to, donghyuck’s father was not so forgiving. if donghyuck’s father knew that he was sucking up to you right now, even if it was to get information to give to his dad, he would lose it. donghyuck has everything to lose — his family, his inheritance, his home — but he would risk it all if it meant getting to see the way your cheeks involuntarily turned pink when he spoke to you, and the way your thighs pressed together when he played with the ends of your hair. you are his vice.
“hyuckie,” you say, leaning in close to whisper to him. “you know your daddy’s going to kill you if he finds out you’re talking to me, so why do you try it?”
“you’re just too pretty to not talk to,” he says simply.
“and you’re willing to risk a billion dollar inheritance for a pretty face? beauty fades, donghyuck.”
“i don’t think yours ever will, angel.”
you lean in closer to him, your lips so close to his he can feel your hot breath on them. he has to physically restrain himself from leaning in the rest of the way, grasping tightly onto the desk. “flattery will get you nowhere. mind your own business.” you pull back quickly, wiping at your lips as if you really had kissed and picking up your things and leaving. “see you monday!” you say as you leave the classroom. donghyuck slumps into the back of his chair and runs his fingers through his hair.
***
as you walk into your house, you’re greeted by your overly energetic puppy barking up a storm. you pick him up into your arms and start talking to him in a baby voice, “oh, aren’t you just the cutest? yes you are, so much cuter than donghyuck could ever be,” you say pressing a kiss to the top of his head. your mother quickly walks down the stairs of the house and meets you in the living room as you sit on the couch to watch tv.
“honey, don’t forget that your aunt’s wedding is tomorrow. i already had the housekeeper pick up your dress from the dry cleaning and it’s hanging up in your wardrobe. you have to be up bright and early for the bridesmaid breakfast.” she says in passing, heading towards the kitchen.
you groan and in that moment, your father comes down from his office upstairs to join you in the living room. “i don’t want to hear any complaining, y/n. your aunt has been looking forward to getting married for the last year and we don’t need your attitude ruining it for her.”
“i don’t have an attitude,” you say through gritted teeth. “isn’t her husband some huge drug ki—“ you start but are quickly interrupted.
“uh-uh-uh, the less you know, the better. how was school?”
“it was alright. donghyuck talked to me, today.”
“what, again? is he stupid or something?”
“hey! he thinks i’m pretty, he can’t be stupid.”
“what’d he want?”
“he was just asking me what i was doing this weekend. i told him to mind my own business.”
“good… watch what you say around him, i don’t want you getting all buddy-buddy with him all of a sudden. you never know what him and his dad are up to. i remember one time—“
“no no no,” your mother says from the kitchen. “no mafia talk in my house.”
“last time i checked, i paid the bills,” your father says with a roll of his eyes.
“i’m going to my room,” you say sheepishly, getting up and walking up the stairs with your puppy following closely behind. you can hear your parents bickering downstairs as you close the door to your open, shutting the sound out.
the next day, you wake up at approximately 8 a.m. to attend the bridesmaid breakfast your aunt was forcing out of all the bridesmaids. everyone there was twice your age, just a handful of aging mafia housewives who had nothing better to do than entertain the romanticization of being in love with a mobster. the wedding reception happens quickly after the breakfast, and before you know it you’re standing in the back of the room downing champagne as you watch everyone on the dance floor. this wedding is like no other; there are hundreds of people, multiple glass chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, a cake as tall as the 5’2 bride, and the majority of korea’s most dangerous men under one roof. mafia money at its finest.
as you scan the room, you lock eyes with the person who’s seemingly just walked in and your smile drops. you run quickly over to him and pull him towards the back exit.
“donghyuck, what the fuck are you doing here?” you say loudly, trying to make sure your voice is heard over the loud music. “you can’t just fucking show up here like this, do you know who is here? if anyone had seen you, you would’ve been dead by now! you’re lucky it was just me.”
“y/n, we need to leave. now.” he says urgently.
“what? are you insane?” you ask. “i can’t just leave, i’m one of the bridesmaids,” you point towards the dress you’re wearing.
“that’s cute and all but seriously, y/n we need to get out of here right now. the police will be here any minute.” he grabs one of your arms to pull you out the back exit, but you tear your arm from his grasp.
“the police? did you call them? oh my god, you’re stalking me, aren’t you. this is why you wanted to know what i was doing this weekend? so you could call the police and get my entire family busted? some fucking guy you are.” you’re about to walk away but he grabs your arm again.
“y/n, please, i’m begging you just listen to me. i didn’t call them. my dad planted someone to work for your dad and he’s been working with him for the last 6 months, he was the one who told him what was going to happen. my father submitted an anonymous tip to the police about the wedding and now they are on their way. you need to leave with me, now. i don’t want you to get killed.”
“and why not? i don’t think your daddy would be too happy finding out that you’re trying to make a quick getaway with his enemy’s daughter.”
“i’ll be damned if i’m not the person to take you out, y/n. i refuse to let anyone else be the one to kill you.” he says, but you can tell he’s still unsure if he means it or not. but before you can say anything snarky in response, you hear screaming in the other room and gunshots. donghyuck quickly pulls you close to him and pushes you both out of the back exit. you want to run back and check if your parents are okay, but you know that they aren’t. the gunshots are constant and you don’t know if they’re police-induced or not. all you know is that it’s getting harder to breathe as you run down the street, donghyuck pulling at your arm and dragging you to his car. your heel breaks in a crack in the sidewalk and you reach down, quickly taking both of your heels off and abandoning them in the street as you keep running. when you reach his car, donghyuck pushes you into the passenger seat. once in the driver’s seat, he quickly turns the car on and starts driving away from the chaos. you stare out the window and let the tears flow freely down your face.
twenty or so minutes later, donghyuck pulls over in the middle of the freeway. you turn over to face him, mascara-stained cheeks and he looks at you with pain visible in his eyes. you want to ask him why he saved you, what his plan was, where he’s taking you, but before you can find the right words to say his hands are cupping your face and his lips are pressed against yours. it takes you a moment to respond, but you relax into his lips and kiss him until you can’t breathe. your kiss is messy, full of tongue and teeth, but his hands never once move from your face. you are the first to pull back, needing to catch your breath. you stare into his eyes as your lips are ghosting his, the feeling of his breath fanning your lips.
“why did you save me?” you whisper, feeling tears brim in your eyes.
“i told you,” his hands fall from your face and into his lap. he pulls back and rests his head on the steering wheel. “i told you, i’ll be damned if i’m not the person to take you out.”
“donghyuck,” you say sincerely, causing him to look back up at you.
“because i don’t think i could’ve lived with myself if you ever got hurt,” he confesses.
“donghyuck, but your dad—“ you say, unable to find the right words to say. “he hates me and my dad, he would be so upset.”
he faces forward and grabs onto the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white. he lets out a sigh and continues: “i turned my dad in.” now he is the one letting tears fall down his face. your eyes widen and instinctively one of your hands reaches out for his. he intertwines his fingers with yours as he cries in his car.
“y/n, my dad has been doing bad things for as long as i can remember. i vowed to myself that i would never become like him. and i always admired you for staying out of your dad’s business as much as you could, it was the smart thing to do. but my dad wouldn’t let me, he was always telling me everything that he was doing. part of me believes that he was doing it so he knew he wouldn’t go down alone… and then yesterday he told me that someone submitted an anonymous tip to the police about the wedding, and i recognized the last name from the family tree presentation you gave in class… and once i knew you were involved is when i drew the line.” he takes a deep breath, wiping the tears away from his face. “and so i stayed up all night and gathered whatever information i had on my dad and i called the police in the morning and i left to go get you just before they arrived at my house.”
“oh, hyuckie,” you say softly, tears falling down your face now too.
he turns to face you and squeezes your hand. “i love you, y/n. and i know you probably don’t feel the same way about me, but i mean it. i never want to love anyone else.”
you let out a giggle and wipe some of your tears away with your other hand. you raise it to cup donghyuck’s cheek and smile at him. you’re overwhelmed with feelings after hearing his confession, and your heart starts beating faster as you make eye contact with him. he looks at you with so much love and adoration that it hurts to breathe. “i love you,” you say back. “no one has ever cared for me like you do, hyuckie. the fact that you would put everything on the line just for me… wow. i don’t know what to say. you leave me speechless yet again, lee donghyuck.”
donghyuck captures your lips in another kiss and this time, he’s the one to pull away to catch his breath. “run away with me, y/n.”
“you’re crazy, donghyuck.”
“i’m serious. there’s nothing left for us in this city, we can pack everything up and move to another city and start our lives over. free of all this mafia bullshit.”
you fall silent for a second, thinking about his proposal. your silence worries him, he can’t help but be afraid that you’re going to say no.
“what about money? what are we going to do?”
“i’ll take care of it, don’t worry. i have enough money to move us a few cities over and for us to restart. just say you’ll go with me,” he says.
“okay.”
“okay?”
“let’s do it,” you say. donghyuck cracks a smile. “but first…”
“first?”
***
you step into your house, peeking into the living room and your puppy jumps up from the couch to come greet you. donghyuck follows shortly behind you, watching you contently as you crouch down to pet your puppy.
“donghyuck, meet tobio,” you say. donghyuck crouches down and tries to pet him, but he growls at him. “noooo, tobio, we don’t do that, we love hyuckie.” you turn to face donghyuck and press a quick kiss to his lips. “he’ll get used to you, i promise.”
you stand up and run your fingers through your hair, tobio pawing at your legs wanting you to continue petting him. donghyuck straightens up, and quickly pulls you into a hug. your head rests on his chest, as he presses a kiss to the top of your head before resting his cheek on it. your arms are wrapped tightly around his waist and his scent manages to calm the erratic butterflies in your stomach.
“i love you,” he says, closing his eyes.
you press a kiss to his chest. “i love you.”

Branch Evolution
Summary: There’s a reason the Ghoulies phrase is ‘Evolve or Die’; also featuring my personal headcanon about Malachai’s family
”What is it Lance.” Malachai snaps at the boy who nervously stands in front of him. “I was just wondering..” “No fuck off; I’m not giving you a day off or listening to your teenage woes; or college essays or… Fine you got ten seconds; spit.” “How did the Ghoulies come to be?” “I started the gang; you idiot.” “But why; how and-”
“You keep asking questions and i’ll…” Malachai doesn’t finish; hand brushing over the knife he keeps embedded in the couch. “Course; sorry to bother you.” “Hey kid; grab a milkshake at pop’s would you.” Lance nods gripping the list and money that Malachai had tossed to him. He leaves to laughter and Malachai settles back into his chair.
“Seriously how did you form.” Penny asks fingers curling around the beer bottle she’d gotten. “You should know; you’re old enough to remember us forming.” Malachai grins at her and she laughs, shaking her head. “I may be but I never knew you before this southside; issue shall we say.” Malachai grins and sighs through his nose. “Liar.” He snarls, shoving past the incoming Ghoulies to retreat into his bedroom.
”I don’t give a fuck! That’s oppressive and outdated and SHIT!” Malachai stumbles back when the fist hit’s his jaw and he growls standing up and sneering. “You can beat me till I’m half dead but like hell I’m letting my baby sister do that snake dance for a bunch of fuckin’ pervs. Least I have morals.” “It’s a Serpent right! It’s our laws!” “Laws can be changed; she’s-” “Just cause she’s your kid sister don’t make a difference; my kids will do the trials just the same if they want to join.” “We’re by blood ain’t no need for us to play initiate. We already live and breathe as snakes; we don’t have to prove ourselves to-” Malachai doesn’t finish shivering slightly as FP throws him out of the Wyrm. “You stay the fuck out Malachite.” FP sing songs and Malachai stands up, shoving FP back into the Wyrm.
“You call me that shit name again and I’ll rip the crown from your fucking dead fingers.” “But that’s who you are kid; crown prince of the Serpents, a jewel in the gang’s crown just like your sister. You did the trials and so will she.” “She’ll do ‘em but not that fuckin’ stripper dance you pass off as-” Malachai ducks his head sighing when Tall Boy pushes himself between the two. “Come on let it go; just for now; we ain’t accepting new members anyhow; it’s off season.” “Yeah, too many jobs, not enough bodies.” FP nods to Malachai who huffs before returning back to his house and trying to avoid the shouting that hasn’t stopped since his sister ran away.
Malachai doesn’t see FP again until two months later; he pushes it off as strategic job assignments; that FP wanted to avoid Malachai annoying him for as long as possible. All it did was give Malachai more and more of a motive; pulling at the ears and heartstrings of the Serpents and the other southsider’s that were loyal to him; that were indebted to him. He crafts himself a fringe community; pulling in anyone the Serpent’s shun; be it those that failed the trials; or those that were double crossed. Even a few of the die-hard snakes assure him they’ll stand with him; of course this is purely due to them falling out of favour with FP but Malachai will take what he is given and let it grow and evolve.
“Malachai, come on kid.” FP hovers in the door frame and Malachai half looks up from the couch, his upper body jerking forwards before the rest of him twists off the couch. “I ain’t a kid FP, just under ten years younger than you, and already head of the gang, took you years, and being in your daddy’s pocket to make it this far.” He grins and his teeth gleam in the shadows. “Ki-Malachai; seriously is this really over those dumb job assignments; I can-” “You can’t do shit FP; you lost your main source; the candyman and the flowers are mine now; you just slither on out of the garden of eden that is the Southside; go on.” “Enough; when will you see this is the problem; we should be united; not divided; the southside is all our homes; we all belong here.”
“Tell that to those that didn’t make it in the gang; those that you pushed and gave the worst jobs because they talked back or got too mouthy about traditions and rules like me. You dug your own grave Snake King.” “And you’re the fallen angel to save them from my wrath?” FP snaps back and Malachai tilts his head back laughing. “When did I call you a god in this FP? When would I ever worship you?” FP grimaces.
“Malachai just dissolve this little game and come back; I don’t want this…” “Want what FP; to fight for your territory? For your members? What happened to the snakes being a family? To the law; no serpent stands alone.” FP turns away and sighs dragging his hands down his face before he grabs Malachai and shoves him to the ground. “Don’t move kid.” It’s the last thing Malachai obeys from FP.
“What happened?” Penny asks, looking at the scar on Malachai’s back that runs onto his ribs, the skull tattoo covers most of it. “Cover up.” She rolls her eyes and jabs him, pulling his shirt as he covers it back up. “Let me see it kid.” She hisses at him and he grips her bandaged wrist shoving her off of him. “Serpent’s never shed their skin right?” He snarls in her ear. “As a snake you should know when one rattles and when to stay away.” Penny’s eyes widen surprised at how his voice drops down into threatening; how his words drawl out mimicking FP Jone’s speech pattern. Penny mulls it over slightly unsurprised that Malachai would use FP as a role model; the man was running a successful gang after all.
“So that’s why you’re so into the snakes; they’re like your ideal gang.” “They ain’t.” Malachai snaps and Penny arches an eyebrow. “Well it’s obvious the Serpents are a sore spot for you; not have the stomach to make it in?” She taunts wondering how easy it’ll be to rile him up if the implication of touching a bar fight wound was enough to make him bristle. “You shut it.” “Oh no dead boy walking. I’m going to talk about my gang as long as I want. The Serpents are my family and even if they cut me out I’m still one of them. And I want back in.”
“You think you’ll get special treatment cause you’re their lawyer? Being special like that; being more than a random member don’t get you nothing when you commit a crime against them.” “Sounds like some of your members have experience with that.” Penny grins but wipes it off her face when Malachai just nods to the other ghouls clustered around. “Out.” They follow his order and each pat Penny on the shoulder, none of them look her in the eyes.
“You should know better Penny. You should be more careful. Evolve or Die. Stop talking about the half done snakes and start talking about what we all become when we die; ghouls.” “Oh so scary; spooky ghosts.” She laughs carefully maneuvering her wrist out of Malachai’s reach; he simply leans over her; fingers digging into the bandages until he sees red on them. “Listen Penny. Evolve or Die.” “I get it your dumb catch phrase.” “You think getting a little skin off your arm hurts; that after throwing yourself at my mercy they’re gonna let you back in?” “God they must’ve rejected you something fierce.”
“No; I made it in. I was just like you; except i didn’t want to ride FP’s dick straight into a high position or jail. I wanted to stop all the shit they praise and pass off in the Serpents. I wanted them to be better; to grow.” He grins at her and she stares in his eyes as hers widen in fear “Evolve or die. You catch my drift Penelope?” Malachai hums and then swipes his hair back pulling it up so it’s out of his face; miming as if it’s slicked back. “Malachite.” He breathes into her ear and she stiffens.
“Oh; you really didn’t know then? How; cute.” He pauses returning back to his chair and tapping the wall. Before Penny can move the Ghoulies swarm back in and she retreats outside; shaking and unable to look at Malachai.
“Told you then?” Lance asks, offering a shake towards her from another Pop’s run. Penny’s convinced he’s doing something besides playing gopher but she’s not really sure of anything anymore. “Malachite Topaz; one of the great-grandkids of the Serpent founders. Yeah shocked me too when I found out. How’d you figure it out? I managed to see his scar; nasty piece of work.” “Yeah can’t believe he; how did he get it?” “Same way you got yours; Jones carved him up.” Penny turns looking horrified. “Jones carve-” “Yeah something went off in FP that day; he was right mad according to everyone that saw; pinned Malachai to the ground and sliced off his serpent tattoo; poor kid got it on his side and back; one of those big snakes eating itself.” “He’s older than you.” Is all Penny manages to say trying not to picture a younger Malachai on the ground alone and bleeding. “Yeah; he treats us like family; i think it’s cause of his little sister; I’m the same age as her apparently. We go to school. I give him updates whenever he needs.”
“And when does he need?” Penny laughs a little and Lance waves the shake in his hand. Penny thinks back to how he seems to always have on in his hand; what she had thought a teenage addiction was the second cover up she’d seen that day. She thinks about Malachai for a moment longer; how desperate he is to appear tough; to appear strong and she doesn’t have to wonder for very long why anymore; she slowly unwinds the bandage on her wrist surprised when Malachai’s hand offers her clean ones.
“You should wash it first; it’ll burn like a mother fucking asshole but it’ll be better that it getting infected and you ending up half dead in the hospital.” “Course; Evolve or die right.” She tries to be casual; tries to wave off his concern but she lets him lead her back towards the house of the dead and she wonders if it’s really all that bad to come back as a ghoul.
