so i'm going to talk about gundam wing now. strap in, sluts.

i just finished it. it's been easily 20 years since I last watched this show but, like many, it was my first exposure to Gundam so for that reason alone it's still pretty important to me. but even outside of that I think it's one of my favorite Gundam series for multiple reasons, despite some glaring flaws which we'll obviously get into. i'll be nice and put this under the cut.

okay, fuck you tumblr. this was originally supposed to be a much longer post about my feelings on the show as a whole as well as characters and the suits but Tumblr decided it was time to post right godsdamn now. and since I don't feel like deleting/retyping all of this out I'm just going to leave it as it is. so here are my thoughts on just the main suits in the series.

Epyon. my beloved... still possibly my favorite Gundam of all time. beautiful design, perfectly suited for purpose: murder. literally no ranged capability. just melee.

Deathscythe. another gorgeous design mainly suited to close range combat. i don't have to tell any of my gunpla girlies about this one, honestly. good chance you all have one on your shelf.

Wing/Zero. i know these are technically two different suits but from a design and usage standpoint they fulfill the same roles. kinda mid for the main gundam of the show, let's be honest. (until we get to talking about the endless waltz custom. goddess i would grab her by her wings and fuck her so hard...) classic gundam motif of bird mode transformation, very big gun™️, but also great melee. (i played a lot of dynasty warriors: gundam with my brother and heero was usually my main. you just can't beat that buster rifle akimbo spinning special)

Tallgeese. Another classic favorite of the gunpla community i think. the original gundam in this au. good design, i still like the centurion helmet and the shield. a lot of these suits make good use of physical shields in the design.

Shenlong/Nataku. really fun design. love the dragon motif and its probably the most well rounded for long, mid and close combat, especially after the mid season upgrade to Altron.

Sandrock. pretty but very one note. the shotel are a really cool physical weapon whereas most of the suits in this series rely on beam weapons. but Quatre is just so very mid as a pilot it feels like the sandrock never really gets to show off.

Heavyarms. okay, this might piss some people off. but this one is by far the dumbest suit in the series, possibly the entirety of gundam. really cool design (once again, especially after the mid season upgrade, with the double barrel gatling) but its so fucking useless! operational time of like 5 minutes because it runs out of ammo so godsdamn fast. which it probably wouldn't if Trowa wasn't spraying randomly all over every battlefield, but most fights he gets into he has to either retreat or be rescued because he always runs out.

In the original Gundam Wing series, the Heavyarms was the only Gundam to not be significantly damaged and needed to be rebuilt. Possibly because of this, it's mid season upgrade for space combat mostly comprised of adding thrusters around the suit, with an additional beam gatling gun being added to its primary weapon. I always thought it got dealt dirty, so this is my answer to improving the original upgrade.

The Heavyarms Full Armor Custom attempts to both increase its defenses and improve its maneuverability to capitalize on its pilot's acrobatic style. It is equipped with pieces of Virgo IIIs collected from the battlefield, meaning it is relatively easy to repair and replace. The thrusters, being stripped down to the bare essentials to reduce weight, are removed from the shoulders and added to the Heavyarms's backpack for better balance/reduce the stress/weight on the arms. The Virgo III shoulders are also stripped down to the bare essentials, with the expectation that the active defense of the Planet Defensors in additional to the additional thrust/propellant will allow the Heavyarms to evade most attacks so the Virgo III armor won't be missed. Should the defensors be destroyed or the add on shoulders be damaged, explosive bolts allow for the equipment to be purged, greatly reducing the weight of the mobile suit and similarly improving its speed.

Similarly to the Virgo III's mega beam cannon, a cable connects the gatling beam cannons to a thruster, allowing the weapon to draw power directly from the mobile suit (ideally meaning the primary weapon never needs to be abandoned during battle due to being spent).

Finally, the Full Armor custom is equipped with a short type beam rifle typically used by space type Leo mobile suits, and also easily replaced due to its mass production. This rifle is less to add to the Heavyarms's already impressive firepower, and is instead intended for laying down suppressing fire against enemies attempting to get in close, being lighter and quicker to bring to bear than the gatling guns. It could also quickly and easily discarded to draw a beam saber without regret, useful as the Heavyarms's combat knife is removed, and replaced by the Virgo beam sabers stored in the shoulders.

The Gundam Heavyarms Custom is Real! At least in Gundam Evolution anyways. It was so cool to see it finally added, I love that mobile suit!

I also like Trowa, the Heavyarms’ pilot. I really love that jacket that he wears during his flashback/origin manga, so I drew it here!

As a fellow gunpla fan and builder, I was wondering if you paint your models or just put them together without, I have a few I'd like to try painting but I didn't know where to start.

It depends, I’ve had ones where I paint every surface and others where I paint just the bare minimum. I’ve found that without an airbrush, painting every surface just leads to overly thick finishes that get scraped up whenever you try to move a joint.

The best results I’ve ever gotten are from using paint strategically and then using a high quality flat clear coat to even out the finish. But often I don’t take the time to do the clear coat, telling myself I’ll do it later and then never returning to it.

If you build them straight out of the box with no finishing at all they look OK, and every year the new releases look better and better out of the box. Still, even if you’re apprehensive about painting, doing the panel lines is probably the single most important thing you can do it make it look good/finished, and it’s also quite easy to do.
