I went hunting for the various Maguanac HGs because gunpla are cheap right now and instead stumbled over someone selling the full weapons Leo HG together with the newly released Altron HG.

Welcome to my collection, you ugliest of Wing suits. :D

I'm no fan of the Tallgeese series or Epyon, but nothing beats the eyesore that is the cluttered Altron. Why does it even have that shield on its shoulder? And the color scheme. It went from the beauty that is Shenlong to this.

Which is reflected in the price, by the way. This one sells for around 30 bucks newly released (which I got for twenty in the bundle), whereas Deathscythe has been out for a year already and they still want over 50$ for it.

Duo, stop being popular. You're driving up the prices. :(

I get Altron's design is paying homage to G Gundam and there is a lot of symbolism to this suit as well (which I'll get to in a separate post... eventually) but sigh it's still ugly and cluttered.

Oh well.

At least Endless Waltz made up for it.

Lego Altron, from Gundam Wing, scaled for playing Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack. The beam trident is held in the holes in the fangs, but in brick could probably be grasped between the fangs and the mouth of the dragon head. I always felt the Altron gundam didn't get the respect it deserved. If any of the other gundams were on par with Zero and Epyon, it was Altron. The wings were shaped a bit oddly though.

so i'm going to talk about gundam wing now. strap in, sluts.

i just finished it. it's been easily 20 years since I last watched this show but, like many, it was my first exposure to Gundam so for that reason alone it's still pretty important to me. but even outside of that I think it's one of my favorite Gundam series for multiple reasons, despite some glaring flaws which we'll obviously get into. i'll be nice and put this under the cut.

okay, fuck you tumblr. this was originally supposed to be a much longer post about my feelings on the show as a whole as well as characters and the suits but Tumblr decided it was time to post right godsdamn now. and since I don't feel like deleting/retyping all of this out I'm just going to leave it as it is. so here are my thoughts on just the main suits in the series.

Epyon. my beloved... still possibly my favorite Gundam of all time. beautiful design, perfectly suited for purpose: murder. literally no ranged capability. just melee.

Deathscythe. another gorgeous design mainly suited to close range combat. i don't have to tell any of my gunpla girlies about this one, honestly. good chance you all have one on your shelf.

Wing/Zero. i know these are technically two different suits but from a design and usage standpoint they fulfill the same roles. kinda mid for the main gundam of the show, let's be honest. (until we get to talking about the endless waltz custom. goddess i would grab her by her wings and fuck her so hard...) classic gundam motif of bird mode transformation, very big gun™️, but also great melee. (i played a lot of dynasty warriors: gundam with my brother and heero was usually my main. you just can't beat that buster rifle akimbo spinning special)

Tallgeese. Another classic favorite of the gunpla community i think. the original gundam in this au. good design, i still like the centurion helmet and the shield. a lot of these suits make good use of physical shields in the design.

Shenlong/Nataku. really fun design. love the dragon motif and its probably the most well rounded for long, mid and close combat, especially after the mid season upgrade to Altron.

Sandrock. pretty but very one note. the shotel are a really cool physical weapon whereas most of the suits in this series rely on beam weapons. but Quatre is just so very mid as a pilot it feels like the sandrock never really gets to show off.

Heavyarms. okay, this might piss some people off. but this one is by far the dumbest suit in the series, possibly the entirety of gundam. really cool design (once again, especially after the mid season upgrade, with the double barrel gatling) but its so fucking useless! operational time of like 5 minutes because it runs out of ammo so godsdamn fast. which it probably wouldn't if Trowa wasn't spraying randomly all over every battlefield, but most fights he gets into he has to either retreat or be rescued because he always runs out.

Few days late, but I am at the half way point of Gundam Wing, 25 episodes in. Quatre’s dad was unironically doing an “I’m the good billionaire” bit, and to be fair in the context of the show it’s true, but it’s still really weird. The civilians have no idea that OZ aren’t who they claim to be, and have no reason to believe otherwise. And then the father goes and tries to leave the colony taking all the resources he owned with him. (I think I’m not entirely sure that’s exactly how it went down it’s been a few days.) Essentially leaving the civilian population in the hands of OZ without any sort of resources that might make them worth keeping safe to OZ, thus placing them at a higher risk of abuse at their hands? Just seems very counterproductive to the idea of any peace keeping through the use of those resources. Then he dies and Quatre gets an excuse for a small villain arc which is fun.

What happened to Relena? Like where has she been since the last time she was on screen? It felt like things were about to get really interesting with her and now she’s gone.

Trowa infiltrating OZ and using that as a way to provide aid to the other Gundam pilots was absolutely great. Loved that.

Zechs seeming to have decided to switch between Zechs and Milliardo as personas based on what job he’s currently doing is actually pretty cool and unique twist on Char’s stint as Quattro if I’m understanding how his arc is going so far, and it’s exciting to see where that goes.

Treize and Lady Une made for a really cool little arc, though the idea of a split personality on Lady Une’s part was very very silly. It felt like something that could have been better explained as a sort of crisis of faith in Treize’s plan after he stops doing the Romefeller group’s every bidding that eventually leads her to choosing to take the actions she does before dying.

And finally, yes, I did love the reveal of the Wing Zero. I loved that Quatre piloting it and attacking colonies in reaction to his father’s death was absolutely great. And then the brief scene with the Deathscythe Hell and Altron were absolutely perfect.

On a side note, I am getting much more into the ost beyond the op, but I do find I have a hard time remembering it when I’m not actively watching.

Rewatching Gundam Wing and...

So much.

I enjoy it as I always did, and my favorite (and least favorite) characters haven’t changed. I wondered if they might. But Zechs, in a massive waste of his gorgeous aesthetic, still can’t tell what side he wants to be on from a hole in the ground.

I know, he’s only 19. It’s really not that unreasonable he’d struggle in such chaotic times. But it just comes off with him being propped up as this big deciding factor when he’s often just placed opposite Heero and the rest of the Gundam pilots because that rivalry is so central to the series. I’m glad Endless Waltz gave him some proper development independent of his weird pissing contest with a 15 year old boy. He was badass in EW; he finally became the character I wanted him to be all along.

Trowa (Triton Bloom, not dickbag Trowa Barton from EW) is still my favorite character. I guess I just find something more charming about his cool facade than Heero’s. I dunno why; they’re very similar. But there’s a depth and nuance to Trowa that I don’t sense with Heero. Or it’s there and I just don’t relate to it. I enjoy Trowa’s capability to fly under the radar in ways and places he really shouldn’t be able to. While Heero and Duo pretended to be students as their cover, he was just like, “Nope. I’m joining the fucking circus.”

Wufei is still kinda just... there. Better writing could’ve made him a really cool character. Especially since he has one of the more interesting Episode Zero backstories. He’s just so uncooperative (says a lot, given that he seems the most aloof and standoffish in a group that also includes Heero and Trowa/Triton). He boasts a lot and then broods when the door hits him on the ass. The sexist undertones don’t help his likability much, either.

Shenlong, and especially Altron, are badass looking Gundams, though.

I’m only just to the boys’ return to space after Antarctica, etc. But I just know Noin is going to disappoint me like when I first watched the series. She’s such a cool character but her devotion to Zechs really hurts her.

Quatre was always kind of a meh character to me. But I appreciate his value much more this time around. I was too young my first time to appreciate his arc and what a big deal it was that he was so traumatized he cracked and nearly killed Trowa under the control of the ZERO system. While I used to think that made him hypocritical, I understand the reasoning behind that story line much better now.

Duo is just Duo. He’s as awesome as ever. A much needed bit of humor in an otherwise angsty, pseudo politically enlightened plot. Plus, Deathscythe and Deathscythe Hell are dope.

Heero’s kind of a middle of the pack character for me. I understand he’s the hero, the strongest pilot, etc. I mainly like him because of the instant trust and respect between him and Trowa.

That’s one of the things I’m reminded of this rewatch: there’s really not a lot of time spent developing the camaraderie between the Gundam pilots. They’re so scattered for the bulk of the series and it makes it hard to connect with them as a unit. It’s not necessarily an unrealistic portrayal, given the circumstances. But it does make me wish for more interaction among the pilots before Peacemillion.

Anyhoo. This is probably nowhere near the end of my ranting on this show now that I’m on a kick again.
