EGX trip,

Last week we went to a very big and rather well known gaming convention/ trade fair called EGX, our course links heavily to a lot of what makes up this convention, it focuses on video games, pop culture, nerd culture, art and more. Learning about the gaming industry is important to us as future artists (freelance or not) as it would be one of our main industries of employment, artists are needed for a lot in video game development as before the concept or general idea has even been fully formed it’s artists who usually create concept art and ideas for said games, this also applies to film and tv sometimes to a lesser extent as most films are built from rigid scripts and ideas where as a video game can change almost completely from initial concept to finished product.

EGX has many sections containing different things all relating to the gaming and art industry except the food court area, there was an area dedicated to upcoming indie games (small development team or single developer games) called the ‘Rezzed zone’ I personally didn’t get to experience it as the lines where extremely long all day and I prioritised other areas over it, but from what I did see and experience at the convention as well as there website I can get an idea of what I missed. One of the games which I had looked at before the convention is called ‘#BLUD’ it’s a dungeon crawler with a 90’s esc art style and zany animation, it’s general concept is surviving a vampire apocalypse and saving your friends while doing so, I’m personally interested in this games development as it’s quite unique in both name and concept and looks to have a fun play style.

The section of EGX i frequented most was the Retro zone an area filled with video games from the industry’s past, including arcade games as famous as Centipede and Pac-Man (both of which I played) as well as lesser known but rather technically interesting and incredibly fun to play and experience games such as Afterburner, an arcade game and series where u pilot an F-14 Tom cat fighter jet, this sounds fun by itself however what really interested me about this game was that it simulates the movements of the jet by moving the player inside the cab really making you feel like your in the jet, for the time this arcade machine was made it would’ve been revolutionary seeing as most other arcade machines are merely a screen you stand at and move joysticks and press buttons, but Afterburner was a fully encompassing cabinet with a joystick resembling a fighter jets flight stick with buttons placed accurately and even having a separate controller for speed resembling controls found in planes.

Another great game I played was ‘CarnEvil’ a 1998 light gun shooter, a game where you the player have fallen victim to or summoned an evil magical carnival that appears and disappears taking whoever enters it with them, as the player it’s your job to kill all evil entities that are within the carnival while simultaneously not shooting any human survivors you come across ( this sounds easier than it really is)

Another section of EGX was the Retail zone, this area has substantial relevancy to our course, the retail zone consists of a few rows of stalls all selling rather pricey merchandise and collectibles, this relates to our course as most of what was being sold was art or could be considered art showing paths and methods for monetising our art after the course, a good example of this was mouse pads, there where a few vendors selling mouse pads with illustrations and computerised art on them being an easy avenue to sell art.

There where also many merch sellers who where most likely selling pre made mass bought items, a stall I suspected of this where selling foam swords upon first seeing them you may have thought they where a small business making them however getting closer to the stall you could see pass the placed swords on the rack where there was a pile of foam swords in plastic bags on piles.

The game utilizes the foot pedal system, just like its predecessor, where players can shoot or hide from enemy fire. When players press down on the pedal, they come out of hiding, allowing them to shoot the enemies. Today I show you how to improve or to setup your joystick controls for War Thunder. I constantly get asked 'how to stop wobbling' in War Thunder.

There’s masses of literature already devoted to air combat, both real life and simulated so I won’t spend too much time on Thach Weaves, Immelman Turns, boom and zoom, turn n’ burn, salt n’ shake, Chaka Demus n’ Pliers and the like. War Thunder aims for a degree of realism, albeit very broadly in Arcade matches, so tips and tactics from real life tend to work in the game. Billy Bishop offers some good advice from his flying school, for example, or perhaps slightly more usefully most of Boelcke’s rules from 1916 translate quite well into the game:

Always continue with an attack you have begun – Reasonable advice in the early ranks, especially with biplanes, but not always the best thing to do later on. It’s always tempting to try and keep turning towards an opponent to bring them into your sights, but if they’re in a more manoeuvrable plane then at best you’ll just keep going around in circles (vulnerable to another opponent), at worst they’ll turn the tables and get behind you (much like a Benny Hill and/or Scooby Doo chase sequence…) If you have an energy (i.e. speed and height) advantage, then “boom and zoom” tends to be a more effective technique: dive down and make a quick slashing attack on the target, zooming away at speed back to a higher altitude before they can chase after you.

Open fire only at close range, and then only when the opponent is squarely in your sights – The lead indicator appears when you’re within about 800m in Arcade mode, but you probably won’t land many hits at that range, so don’t hold the fire button down and waste all your ammo and/or jam the guns; maybe try a burst or two, but try and get closer if you can

You should always try to keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses – You can give yourself a helping hand here by locking on to your target (middle mouse button by default), then a helpful red arrow will point in their direction if you lose sight during violent manoeuvres

In any type of attack, it is essential to assail your opponent from behind – the lead indicator in Arcade mode makes deflection shooting (from the side) easier, but it’s only a guide, it’s better to attack from directly behind if possible. Head-on attacks are a very risky business, you’ve as much chance of having your own pilot or engine knocked out as of scoring a kill, and if you survive the gunfire then there’s still a high probability of a collision

If your opponent dives on you, do not try to get around his attack, but fly to meet it – if someone is diving on you, chances are they have a speed advantage so trying to run rarely works, turning in to them at least minimises their opportunity for a shot.

When over the enemy’s lines, always remember your own line of retreat – Not quite so vital here, but if you are damaged and deep in enemy territory you can try and get back to your own airfield, there’ll usually be more friendlies by your own spawn point who may try and cover you

Tip for Squadrons: In principle, it is better to attack in groups of four or six. Avoid two aircraft attacking the same opponent – if you can find a friend or two to team up with, it can really help to have someone watching your back. Definitely try and avoid attacking an opponent that someone else is attacking, there’s a very high risk of friendly fire or collisions

For more detail there are sections on the official and unofficial wikis with useful articles, there’s plenty on YouTube from people like Bis18marck70 and GrmlZ; if you have a specific questions you can try the Official Forums or the War Thunder subreddit.

One thing fairly specific to Arcade mode in War Thunder is mid-air ammunition resupply; if you fire all your ammunition, there’s a nasty ‘click’, and you’ll see a counter in the top left hand corner showing how long you have before the guns reload. This starts off at about 20 seconds for machine guns, but can be reduced by training the crew. Obviously this is slightly inconvenient if you’re in the middle of a fight, so if you think you’re running low on ammunition and you have a bit of breathing space you can head away from threats and manually reload (press ‘Y’ by default). Machine guns generally have a reasonable amount of ammunition, reloading is more important for some cannon-armed fighters as large calibre weapons (20mm and above) have less ammunition to start with (the Spitfire IIb has only 60 rounds for each cannon), and reloading cannons takes twice as long as machine guns.

Watch out for overheating guns as well. As you fire, a red circle fills around your gunsight; this represents your guns heating up. The longer you fire the greater the chance of a jam, so firing in short bursts is generally a better idea than holding the trigger down, unless you really need to bring something down in a hurry, like an aircraft about to land on your airfield in Domination.

Speaking of really needing to bring an aircraft down, there is a last resort: ramming. Rather a divisive subject, often a cause outbursts of anger in the chat window; deliberate ramming should very much be a last resort, as nobody gets credit for a kill if a plane is destroyed in a collision (you can really annoy somebody on your own side if they critically damage an enemy, then you come along and ram it before it actually crashes), but if your guns are reloading and really need to stop an opponent you don’t have many options. A lot of ‘ramming’ incidents happen during head-on attacks, and if you’re playing a game of chicken then you’re at least as much to blame as the other person if you do crash. If you really like your plane you should take early evasive action in such a situation; if I’m in a shiny new high rank fighter I’ll break off and circle around for another shot rather, if I’m in something of a lower rank that’s suffered some damage, heck, I’ll keep the fire button held down, and if the other guy doesn’t turn that’s his problem… There’s always a risk of accidental collisions and friendly fire too, especially if there are three or four people chasing the same opponent; these things happen, it’s best not to get too worked up about it, but do be careful, even if just to avoid the cash and XP penalty from downing a friendly.

When we last left off, I was a pile of shipper goo, so time to get back to the movie.

(Part one here)

Someone -- the female doctor we saw before who looks kinda like Sarah? -- watching the video, smoking. I think I can see how Sarah is going to escape now. Oh, wait, it's Sarah, with Dr. Silbermann, watching herself on screen. The two asshole guards are in the background. Her hair's combed. She's subdued. Silbermann is still a jerk.

She wants to see her son. Silbermann's not going to let her, is he? Asshole. She denies crushing a Terminator, their existence, claiming Cyberdyne covered up the evidence. Cut to '90s computer nerds in their cubes, doing experiments that are probably going to trigger Judgment Day. Like you do.

They're doing experiments on "it," and new employee wants to know where "it" came from, so Dyson the manager can tell the audience. "Don't ask," is the answer. Everyone's wearing clean suits, which can't be good. There's a door with two keys that needs two people to open it. Yeah, this really can't be good.

Showdown at the Cyberdyne factory with whatever Terminator goes rogue in here??

Cyberdyne has built a safe for that one little fragment they got from the original Terminator... maybe there are more in different jars; it's a really big vault. Yup, there's the arm. The manager stares at it, and you can see the muscles in his cheek twitch as he contemplates it. He's probably going to die by strangulation at the hands of the Terminator if this movie keeps up with its dramatic ironies.

Of course Silbermann won't let Sarah see her son, so she tries to strangle him with his own tie.

Arnold on a motorcycle spies John Connor on a motorcycle, and the game is on!!

I'm like... 90% certain that's the Los Angeles River that John Connor is cycling down... because it's channeled and running through LA and barely has any water in it and everybody LOVES to film there... going to wiki that later...

Fake police officer asking girls for info about John. They're also delightfully '90s. John is an the arcade, delighting in his ill-gotten funds.

Terminator has disguised his gun as a... box of roses? Did I see that right?

John is playing a fighter simulation that is SO MUCH A CALLBACK TO THE OPENING SCENE WITH ALL THE SHIPS TRYING TO KILL THE HUMANS.

The police dude ASKS THE PUNK FRIEND shows him John's photograph, and the friend says "Nah, I don't know him," BECAUSE HE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO TRUST THE COP. Of course this gets John's attention and they run. And then the friend tries to point the cop in the other direction, but the cop just shoves him aside.

(I'll say this much for the punk friend: he tried. He was a good friend.)

LOL, the fact that John Connor knows better than to trust cops is what saves him. Otherwise, he'd've been a sitting duck. Except he runs right into Arnold...

Arnold flips over the rose box, revealing the gun, and it looks like all hope is lost as the cop comes around the corner... and Arnold tells John to get down and shoots at the cops. His first line in the movie.

When this movie first came out, I bet the audience FLIPPED THEIR SHIT at this twist, but I was a) kinda tangentially aware of it from pop cultural osmosis and also b) that fake cop guy was HELLA SUSPICIOUS, so I'm just like... yeah!!! Because the only way to top being hunted by Arnold was to either a) BE HUNTED BY MULTIPLE ARNOLDS, or b) HAVE ARNOLD ON YOUR SIDE, and of course they went with the latter, because WHY NOT?

the cop's hit but gets back up, John is freaked out, and we the audience realize SOMETHING'S UP. A poor bystander gets murdered as the Terminator uses himself as a human shield to save John, who is screaming...

Arnold busts him into the voltage room out of the way and we have a Terminator on Terminator shoot-out, which is kinda incredible, except that Arnold has a bigger gun, so he gets to keep shooting while the police dude tries to recover from the impact.

That moment where the bullet holes are all silver-y as the police guy re-heals himself, and the CGI is obviously early '90s, but still quite effective and horrifying. And then he gets back up and they start grappling and going through walls AND NOW THEY'RE IN THE '90S MALL, OH MY GOD.

ok, this is all great, but I really want more Sarah, where is Sarah in all this, will she ever talk to another woman in this movie PROBABLY NOT. How about more Kyle Reese flashbacks/dream sequences, can we have those? I am but a simple soul.

Okay NOW there's a chase scene in the Los Angeles riverbed.... that little tiny rivulet in the midst of all that concrete is the river. SOB.

Well, I gotta hand it to the human resistance for sending a Terminator after another Terminator, but it also works because JOHN CONNOR LIVED THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE AND REMEMBERS WHAT THE HELL HIS FUTURE SELF DID... timey-wimey paradox ball...

OH MY GOD THAT LEAP AS ARNOLD'S MOTORCYCLE LEAPS INTO THE RIVERBED. No wonder this movie is so frikkin' famous.

John Connor's bike getting run over by the truck is SO a callback to that tiny little toy truck getting run over by the Terminator in T1...

I like how the police Terminator is so focused on John Connor to the exclusion of ignoring the other Terminator unless he's actively in the way. The intensity in his blue-eyed stare is FANATICAL and inhuman and I love it because it's so gosh darn creepy.

Arnold shoots out the truck's tires, and it catches on FIRE. i love how arnold is prepared to shoot anything that comes out of the flames, but they've bought themselves at least a little time. Of course the CGI silver man comes out of the flames as soon as they leave and melts back to normal. He looks like the frikkin' Oscars statue, only silver.

Even his clothes regenerate back on, which raises interesting and troubling questions as to WHY since he couldn't just re-generate his clothes back on when he came out of the sphere, he had to steal them. I have no clue why this is.

Of course, Arnold and John stop in an alleyway to have their conversation. JOHN KNOWS THIS IS A TERMINATOR, OH MY GOD. (Do you think he feels bad for bad-mouthing Sarah earlier now??)

I think Arnold's talked more in this scene than he did in the entirety of T1, lol. The irony of him being John's father-figure now is just priceless, really.

John handles this much better than Sarah in T1, precisely because this is pretty much EXACTLY WHAT HIS MOM'S BEING TELLING HIM FOR AGES, so at least he has a FRAMEWORK for weird shit like this.

John Connor fighting alongside his own father and re-programming a Terminator to BE HIS OWN ADOPTED FATHER FIGURE OH MY GOD. No wonder he's so fucked up.

Arnold: "The T-1000 would definitely try to re-acquire you there." John: "You sure?" Arnold: "I would."

BAM. That's cold. I love it.

They go to a phone booth, and John doesn't have any quarters because he used them all at the arcade. He's going to try to warn his foster parents because he's not a complete asshole, but I... don't think the T-1000 is interested in killing them? Like, they already cooperated with this dude because he was in uniform. John doesn't seem to GET that not everybody responds to police the way he does.

Arnold slamming the machine to get more quarters is AMAZING and the look on John's face is PRICELESS. Also, parallels to his robbing the ATM earlier...

John's foster parents have a German shepherd that won't stop barking, oh this isn't good... the foster dad doesn't like the dog, which is further proof he's an asshole.Oh, wait, it’s John’s dog, this is probably the same dog we saw with Sarah at the end of T1 or its successor, ahhhhhhhh.

I really feel for Janelle. I feel like she's stuck in a relationship with this asshole Todd, and she deserves better and she's probably going to die, and I'm gonna feel bad about it.

Then we hear a gun cock, and she sticks her arm out, and we realize that holy shit, it's the Terminator mimicking Janelle's face as well as her voice, just like the Terminator did with Sarah's mother in T1, and we realize THAT's why she's being so OOC to John over the phone...

Arnold takes over the call and starts mimicking John's voice. John just stares. I think he's starting to get it.

The T1000 doesn't know the name of the dog. Arnold hangs up and tells John his foster parents are dead. Well, fuck. At least Janelle is dead. Too much to hope that the T1000 didn't just tie her up in the spare bedroom and Todd will find her later after "Janelle" goes to look for John? Sigh.

Nope. No luck. Todd is dead and the T1000 has shifted its arm to be a FRIGGIN' SWORD. Fuck, I didn't know they could do that.

This is supposed to be played as black comedy, but it's just horrific, really, even if the dude was an asshole.

Okay, I get it, the T1000 didn't steal the original cop outfit, he just mimicked it? along with the appearance? That's why he only took the gun. Only the earlier models needed to actually steal clothes.

Oh, good, we cut to Arnold explaining all this to John. Thanks, Cameron!

Oh, and now the T1000's going to kill the dog, right? Because it can. Sigh. And the dog's name is on the collar, so it knows that John knows that it wasn't really Janelle on the phone OR it was talking to a Terminator instead. Clever. Poor doggie. IT WAS TRYING SO HARD. IT DESERVED BETTER.

Sarah is being shown photos of the original Terminator from T1 from the security footage at the police station. Apparently, they saw him on mall footage, too. The police are mad that Sarah has no reaction and I'm like... you spent years telling her she was crazy, and NOW you want stuff from her?? Sigh. Is this the drugs that are responsible for her apathy or is it something else? I think she's contemplating her next move...

Silbermann being an ASSHOLE about it...

Honestly, not sure I blame Sarah for not cooperating given how she's been treated thus far... she knows from experience that even the most well-meaning officers are functionally useless against a Terminator because they don't really GET IT.

But she gets a paper clip. And knowing Sarah, that's all she needs to pick a lock and GTFO.

John says he grew up in Nicaragua as Sarah studied from paramilitary officers throughout Central and South America. He uses the word "shack up," which implies Sarah traded lessons for sex, but I hope... she found some sort of comfort there? It's clear from her hallucination she still desperately loves Kyle. SOB.

John realizes he's been an asshole about Sarah all this time because she WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG. The whole theme of this series is that pretty much everyone except for Kyle TOTALLY BELIEVED SARAH WAS CRAZY, so it's nice to see John finally back on track again. He's younger, so he hasn't been indoctrinated into the patriarchy quite as hard as everyone else in this movie.

of course they're going to go try to bust her out, but she might be out on her own by the time they get there...

But of course the T1000 is going to try to get her so he can copy her and he's going to kill her after that, because that's standard operating procedure. I'm not sure how a T101 would necessarily know that, but maybe he ran into some in the future before he was sent back? Whatever, it sounds plausible.

"Fuck you! She's a priority to me!" YEAH, JOHN, YOU TELL 'EM!!

I like how all these random muscle dudes are all coming over to investigate when John starts shouting about being kidnapped... only to be so confused when he blows them off. I'm sure the T1000 will be around to question them later, of course.

Oh, T101 is programmed to obey John Connor... even the younger version. LOLOLOLOL.

Ahh, it's night, but everything's so brightly lit. This is going to be freakin' beautiful action scene.

Sarah ties her hair back! This is a symbolic gesture, of course, and a practical one, but also a huge question for me: what is she using for a hair tie? No way they gave her one... what is she improvising with?

AHHHH THE T1000 IS IN THE FLOOR HOLY FUCK THAT'S CREEPY. And that's how he acquired the guard when the guard walked over him. WOW.

So the gun on his hip when he originally shifts is a fake? It's part of him- because the T1000 can't make weapons. So he has to take the guard's gun. I think that's what happened?

It's going to be really hard for me to mourn when that asshole orderly that's assaulted Sarah gets what's coming to him. The only question is whether Sarah's going to get him first.

GOD SARAH CONNOR KICKING ASS IS SO SATISFYING. First the dude who assaulted her, and then Silbermann. Karma's such a bitch, isn't it?

John in his naivete order the T101 not to kill anybody, so he just shoots the guard in the legs instead. John, you'd better be more careful with your wording there....

Sarah comes face to face with the T101... awkward. She runs away before she sees John, only to get tackled. But the T101 comes to her rescue.

The female guard is the only one to bother him by knocking his shades off, lol.

AAHHHHHH THE TERMINATOR TELLS HER WHAT KYLE REESE SAID TO HER BECAUSE ADULT JOHN CONNOR TOLD HIM IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO GET HER TO TRUST HIM (and also a freakin' great callback!!!)

Silbermann is watching the whole thing go down, he's probably going to spill it all to the T1000, of course...

Of course the T1000 just walks through the bars. Holy shit Silbermann is never going to get over the fact that Sarah was right all along. This is going to totally break him. Either that, or he'll double down on it.to save face. The only reason he survives is because he stays close to the wall and nobody cares enough to stop and deal with him.

AHHH, THE CGI WHEN HIS HEAD SPLITS OPEN IS BOTH TOTALLY FAKE AND ALSO HELLA CREEPY AND SILBERMANN IS WATCHING ALL OF IT, THEY'RE TOTALLY GOING TO LOCK HIM UP AFTER THIS OH MY GOD, KARMA.

Like, the uncanny valley of '90s CGI totally WORKS here, because it's just so fucking creepy. But it's also another sign that this is action and not horror, because action is less focused on blood and guts and gore--the reality and effects of violence.

Oh, good, they steal a car, because they weren't all going to fit on the motorcycle.

The T1000 has given up all subtlety now, and is just a giant silver amorphous human now. Oh, wait, now they ran out of money and he's human again.

LOLOLOLOL Sarah and T101 making John reload in the back seat because OF COURSE HE KNOWS HOW TO DO THAT, HE'S SARAH'S KID.

Sarah Connor is in her friggin' ELEMENT NOW, boys and girls.

I wish John asserting his independence was NOT another example of a man telling Sarah Connor what to do, thank you very much. And I hate how she's literally relegated to the back seat, ugh. This is a great example of how horror tropes are more feminist-friendly than action.

John deigning to give his mother money is the most obnoxious thing ever, good for Sarah snatching it out of his hand, counting it, and handing him back a handful. We're supposed to find him endearing and relatable and I just keep wanting to smack him for his sexist bullshit.

Children playing with fake guns at the gas station, like that isn't symbolic of anything. John's seen too much now to take it lightly. Compare the children playing on the playground earlier in the movie with this.

Video Games as Textual, Audiovisual, Spatial Storytelling

Video games are worth your while and are a unique form of storytelling. Games combine the best aspects of books, movies, and comics, while offering one other element, which we’ll get to later. First, let’s talk about games’ use of textual, audiovisual, and spatial storytelling.

Text and Subtext

Like a book, many games use text to tell their story. Older games rarely had voice acting, instead having each character’s words written or typed out on the screen. Games that now have voice acting still usually reserve it for cutscenes and use text for the majority of encounters in the game. This is somewhat equivalent to a comic’s use of speech balloons.

Some games, however, use text in a way unique from comics or books, and that is by using it in the descriptions of creatures and items. Okami is but one example of this; each time you fight an enemy, a description of it is added to your bestiary. These descriptions reveal new information that the player wouldn’t know simply from fighting each creature: that’s not just a flying fish, but the soul of a drowned woman; that electric mirror was struck by lightning, became a tsukumogami, and holds some of the theatrical feelings of it’s former owner; that scarecrow monster is the physical embodiment of loneliness felt in wintery lands. Although these descriptions don’t affect the main storyline, they add to the player's understanding of the world of the game. Similar encyclopedic items are found in other games, such as Pokemon’s Pokédex or Breath of the Wild's Sheikah Slate camera.

Certain games rely more heavily, if not entirely, on such descriptions to tell their story. Dark Souls is a hands-off game that gives players only the barest minimum information: in order to light the First Flame and stop everyone from going undead, ring two bells, fight four guys, get their souls and dump them into the Flame. That’s it. Not a lot to go on, and if that were it, I can’t see Darks Souls ever having become as popular as it is (especially considering how punishingly difficult it is). But beneath the surface lies a trail of breadcrumbs to follow; in the descriptions of each article of clothing, piece of armor, or weapon lie an intricate story and world building. If the player takes the time to pay attention to what is said, what items look like, and how they are described and then connects the dots, they are rewarded with a totally fleshed out story. Before I watched my brother play Dark Souls (It’s way too hard for me to play myself), I thought I hated dark fantasy, but Dark Souls sold me on it, and it did that with its subtle yet complex storytelling technique.

Art Style and Sound Effects

Games utilize visuals and sound in a way similar to movies, in that they present their story with specific camera angles and blocking (in cutscenes, at least) and use recurring theme music and sound effects. Games do, however, tend to be more stylized than movies. In terms of visuals, this was originally due to technological limitations; that is, graphics had to be simple because arcade machines and game cartridges didn’t have the capacity to handle more complicated data. Nowadays, the visual style of a game is a deliberate choice on the part of the developers.

As an aside, more realistic or better graphics do not necessarily equate to a better art style, in that “real” is not actually a style. There’s nothing wrong with games that choose realism, but I personally prefer those that present something more intentional: the painted scroll look of Okami, whose story is based on folklore; the lanky griminess of Dark Souls, which has themes of death and a world passing away; or the neon, middle-school-skater aesthetic of Splatoon, a paint-ball/skatepark simulator. Choosing a particular style and color scheme for a game can affect the way the player feels about it. Should they be scared, or amped up? Should it seem serious, or goofy and silly? Should the game feel artificial or realistic? Maybe it should be even more real than real, as in the detailed sci-fi sets of Halo and Destiny? These are things that good game developers ask and answer in the form of visual storytelling.

As far as the use of sound, the most stylized aspect of it is non-diegetic sound effects and the use of theme music. For non-diegetic sounds, I mean sounds that are meant to alert the player to something, but that are not part of the world of the game: the sound in the Metal Gear games that happens when someone notices Snake sneaking around, the beeping in Zelda games, and so on. Though such sounds function as alerts to the players, but I wouldn’t necessarily call them part of storytelling.

Music, on the other hand, absolutely serves the story. Games use recurring musical themes for specific characters and situations. Ace Attorney, for example, uses the “Turnabout Sisters” theme for Mia and Maya, while other themes specify which phase of a trial you're in: cross-examination, a dangerous situation or new revelation, or the final confrontation with the guilty party. Many game series have music that span all games such as the Halo Theme, The Legend of Zelda Theme, and Zelda’s Lullaby. When these play, not only does the player get a sense of the import of whatever’s happening in that particular scene, but also feels connected to something larger, something that spans decades (in the real world) or even centuries (in the story setting). Music like this creates cohesion and immersion, and is a huge part of the emotional impact of games.

Two- and Three-Dimensional Space

While comics use two-dimensional space, in the form of panels and pages, games can use two- or use three-dimensional space. Side-scrollers (those games that feature the characters in profile, moving more or less left and right), top-down games (where the players views all action as if they were seeing it from above) and other such games generally use space either to simply let the character more from one location to another (whether that is from one event to another, to different random encounters or battle scenes, or even just the beginning of the level to its end), or as a way to introduce puzzles.

While oftentimes games include puzzles to make the games more challenging, certain games incorporate them into the story. Ghost Trick’s gameplay consists of building Rube Goldberg machines in order to save people from being killed, but that's because the main character is a ghost who can only possess and manipulate objects. A three-dimensional version of this is Portal, where the premise of the game is that you find yourself in a rather shady laboratory that is running tests using a gun that can shoot portals, allowing you to teleport around the test chambers. The gameplay involves strategy and puzzle-solving skills, and the in-game setting literally involves the same thing (incidentally, while Portal would be a fun puzzle game on it’s own, the audio from GlaDos, the AI who runs the test, is what makes that game an unforgettable classic!). While comics require that the artist use space to tell their story, games like Ghost Trick and Portal require the player to utilize and interact with the space in order to become a part of the world and advance the plot.

Since we’re talking about three-dimensional games, which obviously include puzzles and getting from point A to B, I’ll mention that games have the addition of a sense of distance. That is, you might be able to see a volcano on the horizon, or know on your map where the next town lies, but you actually have to take the time to journey there. Thus, many a game includes a quest element. You, the player, take a journey and spend time in the space—the world—of the game. Not only do many games require you to complete a quest, many allow you to go off the beaten path, in the form of side quests, exploration, and choices.

But this post is getting long, and I have a lot to say regarding how that exploration and choice factors into what makes games truly unique. For now, I think I have shown that video games are worthwhile. Next time, dear readers—and gamers—I’ll share more thoughts on video games and why they are a totally unique form of storytelling.

Dragonforce @ o2 Institue Birmingham - 6/11/2019

McRocklin & Hutch [7] kick us of with a psychedelic wave of instrumental synth and guitar 80’s style electro-rock which when combined with the huge screen backdrop that displayed fluorescent moving images with synthwave aesthetic – feel your stoner brethren right now because I bet they were having an absolutely phenomenal experience. It was good but towards the end the novelty was wearing off and I was checking my watch a fair bit.

Lovebites [6] I was quite looking forward to experiencing live after seeing them win at the Golden Gods and checking out their new record. Now to start with there was no build up to them coming onstage at all, the lights didn’t go out or anything they just like finished setting up and just started playing so to start with it caught us all a bit ofguard, what made it worse was that for the first few songs the lighting really didn’t match up to the songs and was just generally not aesthetically pleasing. On the right hand side the bassist and the guitarist were having quite a great time, got some stage presence, getting into the groove of their own tunes and interacting with the crowd. The rest of them really did not have any presence they were just sort of… there. Their lead vocalist really didn’t command the crowd at all, there were a few reasons for this be it that the language barrier and also I think that they were a bit disheartened by the lack of response they were getting, this did pick up towards the end but really the performance was mediocre on this occasion.

Dragonforce [9] were at the height of their fame in the late 00’s but since then their popularity has drastically diminished in this country anyway, their shows got smaller, their spot on festivals got lower, their records just aren’t pulling the numbers that they used to. I mean I was in this venue recently seeing another band and it was packed including the balcony. Tonight the balcony is closed, there is visible space in the crowd so there really has not been a lot of tickets sold tonight which may well be because of the price they were charging also… but when you saw the show, the money they charge was very reasonable. I had a great time reliving some immature nostalgic geeky fun, they had 2 huge classic arcade machines either side of the stage on top of which the guitarists would emerge to perform which was amazing, and they also had screens and would play various classic video game scenes and other bits and pieces which were a great addition. The huge screen backdrop would change to aesthetics from the era in which the current song was from which was amazing, the lasers and lights were strong and psychedelic which was just another great addition was. They had smoke cannons which at times were used just before solo’s which was annoying because it didn’t disperse quick enough to see the solos alongside the smoke gun they would shoot at us and each other. Sam and Herman Li took the piss and pratted about with each other whilst still displaying some of the greatest technique and skill you’ve ever seen, they had a video game theme section which I did feel they spent too much time on, apart from the Farming Simulator one with the banjo that shit was immense. Closing with Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” and their iconic track “Through the Fire and The Flames” I can’t help but feel bad that they’ve dropped this low, I’m hoping it’s not like that everywhere because I would very much like to see them again in another 15 years.

From the second he had awoken and stared into the depths of that giant pit, Boruto had felt nothing but a crippling anxiety. Where was he? How had he gotten here? A car had shown up, had taken him to an address with a number written on it. Ninja tools were all gone, and from what he could tell; he hadn’t been able to at all use more than one shadow clone, to which--- said clone never made it back from that pit. Yeah, he was awkwardly trying to adjust as best as he could to this new environment but, he was overwhelmed with worry. Would his mother and sister be okay with him missing like this? What about his dad? They’d just started to reconcile... Just his luck, right? What more could he do now that he stood lost in a city that he had almost zero knowledge of? Well... The best he could do is wander around until he found something of interest.

Bright, shiny lights with the words ‘Games! Games! Games!’ across a sign on the side of a building had caught his attention a good solid hour or two of wandering about later. Whenever boredom caught up to Boruto, a video game could always solve his problems. Now, Boruto had marched on into the store (or what he had assumed to be a store) all confidently. The overwhelming plethora of arcade games brought a sparkle to his eyes. He’d zoned in on a shooter-style game, and quickly got situated in front of the machine. Grasping the toy gun from its holster, Boruto began to shoot at the simulated monsters coming at him from the screen. It took no less than five seconds for Boruto to realize he wasn’t actually shooting anything... And then, it hit him like a brick. The ‘Insert Coins’ text flashing at the bottom of the screen--- These games required money and now that Boruto thought about it... Did he even have any? Maybe someone left some for him in the building that he’d been first driven to.

With an all too soured sigh, Boruto stepped on out of the arcade and made the decision to return to that original building. Now; what direction had he came from again? ‘ Hmm... Hmm... ‘ Idly staring about, thinking to himself on where to go. And then, like that; it clicked to him that there was someone in the crowd that looked awfully familiar. At first he began to follow her, snaking his way through the public as he tried to catch up to the Uchiha. Closing the gap between them, Boruto reached outward to grasp a hold on her shoulder. “ Sarada? Is that you? “

It's like my mama always said - "omg your thighs are so thick!" And she meant fat, not thicc. Given that I was a size six at this point, I know now that that wasn't true, but back then? Yeah, I hated my body, because that's what I was taught to do. She told me once that i had shoulders like a linebacker, too.

So you'll excuse me if I wasn't primping and perfuming for my date. I wore my usual jeans and some sort of shirt, more than likely with tennis shoes or combat boots, but I don't really remember. We were going to the mall the day after Christmas and it was a madhouse of people exchanging gifts, spending gift cards, and shopping for super deals. And in the midst of this chaos of pulsating human flesh was myself, my little brother, my younger cousin, and the literal boy of my dreams.

He stayed by my side and helped me keep an eye on the younger ones as we went from store to store. He kept trying to show off with karate moves, like jumping in the air and kicking or jumping off benches - typical teenaged boy nonsense. When he took my brother into a store, my cousin and I waited outside and she told me she liked him, but he was weird. i couldn't disagree.

The course of my life changed forever when we decided to hit the arcade in the bottom level of the mall. We played games and had fun, and he took my brother over to the shooting gallery. My family is no stranger to guns and it turns out that his wasn't, either, seeing as his dad was a cop. I watched him leaning over the railing with my brother, showing him tips on how to properly stand and hold the fake rifle, and my brother's joy when he made the shot. I remember looking at them and thinking what a good father this boy of mine would make someday. Because that's what you base that shit off of at 17 - an arcade shootout. sometimes when i'm writing this I feel like I should be throwing up in my mouth a little so I apologize to you, dear reader, if you are doing the same.

So then we go on our last stop for the night, in the arcade: a roller coaster simulator. You climb in this totally enclosed roller coaster and the machine bounces and swerves and there's an image of a roller coaster track in front of you so it's supposed to feel like you're really on a ride. There were two bench seats - he insisted the kids go in the front one, and him and I sat in the back. The ride was fun and we were all laughing and getting bounced around and then...then I wanted to kill myself. i wanted to get run over by a real amusement park ride, like maybe be on a real one and the kid in front of me throws up and i choke to death on his vomit, or a bird flies at my face, or just my seatbelt fails and yeets me into the sun. i didn't really care how it happened, I just wanted to die.

in my mind, what happened was that I was bounced by the ride and went airborne, coming down dead center with my ass in his lap. I saw his eyes widen and my mom's words of how fat and manly i am came back to haunt me. All i could hear was her laughter, all i could see were his eyes widened in pain from my bulk. I was mortified and would not make eye contact or hold his hand while we walked up tio meet my dad. I was horrified and devestated and just absolutely crushed, pun intended. I didn't think he'd ever want to see me again and i knew I couldn't handle seeing him again, not after I clearly broke every bone in his thighs, before ever touching the one between his legs.

In later years, him and I talked about this and he told me that what happened in his mind was that i accidentally sat on the boner he was trying to hide from being so close to me and watching me laugh and holding my hand. Perspective is a bitch.
