A United States federal judge dismissed on Wednesday most of the Mexican government’s US $10 billion lawsuit against U.S. gun manufacturers it accused of negligent business practices leading to violence in Mexico. District Judge Dennis Saylor threw out claims against six of eight companies Mexico sued in 2021. Saylor, a judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, previously dismissed Mexico’s lawsuit in October 2022, saying that U.S. law “unequivocally” prohibits claims that seek to hold gun manufacturers responsible when people use their products for their intended purpose. The Mexican government appealed the decision, and in January a U.S. appeals court ruled its lawsuit could proceed.] On Wednesday, Saylor once again dismissed Mexico’s lawsuit against Sturm, Ruger & Co.; Barrett Firearms Manufacturing; Glock; Colt’s Manufacturing Company; Century International Arms; and Beretta U.S.A. Corp. In early 2022, those companies filed to have the lawsuit against them dismissed based on the broad protection the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act provides to gun manufacturers.

New Jersey can sue the gun industry under a “public nuisance” law, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday, handing a major victory to the state after last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision loosening public carrying restrictions.
The Third Circuit Court of Appeals’ dismissal of a challenge brought by the National Shooting Sports Foundation last year comes as New Jersey and other states look for novel ways to balance public safety with gun rights under the high court’s June 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.
New Jersey’s public nuisance law, signed by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy a month later, may offer a template to other states following Thursday’s ruling, which said the shooting foundation “jumped the gun” in its challenge and did not justify the court’s intervention. Other blue states, such as Delaware and California, have enacted similar measures designed to open the gun industry to legal action.
“Because the Foundation’s case is not yet fully formed, we will vacate the preliminary injunction and remand with instructions to dismiss this action for lack of jurisdiction,” the court wrote.
Judge Zahid N. Quraishi had temporarily blocked the law from taking effect earlier this year, saying it appeared at odds with the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2005, which shields the gun industry from lawsuits when their products are used during the commission of a crime. However, the ruling said that the foundation’s theories of the law’s harm to its members “fail” because they offered vague allegations, and it did not show a substantial threat of the law’s enforcement.
The sports foundation disagreed with the decision and noted that it did not say the state law doesn’t violate the federal commerce act, but “it clearly does.”
“Should New Jersey’s attorney general attempt to enforce the law, we will immediately refile our complaint,” Lawrence G. Keane, senior vice president and general counsel for the foundation, said in a statement.
The Murphy administration signed the public nuisance law as part of a series of gun reforms. It is a relatively new approach that would allow the state to sue the firearms industry over public nuisance violations for the “sale, manufacturing, distribution, importing, or marketing of a gun-related product.” The state attorney general, Matt Platkin, created a new office “with the specific mandate of bringing civil enforcement actions against firearm companies.” Platkin said New Jersey’s was the first such office in the country.
“Our law never should have been enjoined, and now it will be back in effect in its entirety,” Platkin said in a statement. He called the law “an important public safety tool” and the new office is “dedicated to holding accountable those whose unlawful conduct causes bloodshed, and fuels the gun violence epidemic, for the sake of their bottom line.”
Murphy said he is “thrilled” by the ruling and his administration “will always fight for the safety of New Jersey residents, even when it means taking on gun sellers that put profits above innocent lives.”

I've mentioned before about a borderlands modern au idea and I want to show what I have.
Lilith Cashlin
Leader of The Firehawks (a biker gang in the city of Sanctuary which mostly consists of her friends)
Still trying to move on after her boyfriend was murdered by the Hyperion president.
Works at the city museum along with her socially reclusive friend Tannis.
In place of Lilith's siren tattoos, she has a full arm and leg sleeve tattoo which consists of dragons, phoenix's, unicorns and other fantasy elements.
Took in Angel after her father was arrested.
Is pretty close with the city's local con artist.
Angel Coldwell
Daughter of Jack Coldwell, President of the Hyperion corporation.
Was homeschooled most of her life and because of that, she's a bit naive, socially awkward and has developed social anxiety.
Would have recurring nightmares about Jack coming back to get her.
It was revealed that not only was Jack connected to a series of murders (one of the victims being his own wife), but he was also conducting inhumane experiments on people who he'd bribe/threat/kidnapped.
While incarcerated, Jack pleaded to anyone that would listen that he would never hurt his daughter and was very protective of her, the bruises and bone fractures said otherwise.
Along with that, it was also revealed during the trial that Jack was about to do said experiments on Angel shortly before he was incarcerated.
Jack has since been sentenced to death row.
Harley and Tiffany Williams
Parents of child prodigy, Gaige Williams.
Harley is a retired engineer and part-time boxer who owns his own gym in Sanctuary.
Tiffany is the owner of the Sanctuary Science and History Museum and is an elementary teacher at the local school.
Gaige Williams
Child prodigy and honor student.
Doesn't have many friends due to them sending her as weird and nerdy.
Was the only one that offered friendship Angel since she's an outcast as well.
Lost her arm at a young age, but she now has this really cool robotic arm (with help from her dad) that can crush concrete so that fine.

After hundreds of heavily armed Texas law enforcement personnel were unable to stop one very bad guy with a gun for 1 hour and 7 minutes at Robb Elementary School, the NRA may be looking for a new slogan.
Also gun related...
Mexico's lawsuit against American gun manufacturers is revived by appeals court
From that report: Jonathan Lowy, founder and president of Global Action on Gun Violence, points out why Mexico is suing US gun manufacturers.
Mexico alleges and intends to prove that, for decades, gun manufacturers have known how their guns are trafficked to the illegal market in Mexico and here in the United States. They know that there's a small group of bad apple gun dealers - about 5% of gun dealers - selling about 90% of the crime guns. They know that many of these sales are bulk sales of a number of assault weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition. And manufacturers could require their dealers to sell guns responsibly and cut off the bad ones, but they choose not to in order to profit off the criminal market.
The gun manufacturers refuse to police themselves because it might be bad for their business.
Maybe Mexico should build a border wall to keep guns from streaming into the country and make the US gun manufacturers pay for it. 🤔
We need a Supreme Court that will stop rubber stamping NRA and GOP policies. The only way to get that is to keep electing Democratic presidents and keep Democrats in control of the US Senate. This requires a long term commitment the way Republicans spent decades packing SCOTUS with corrupt fanatics and drunks.

Mass shootings in the United States have become a painfully common occurrence, yet gun makers are protected by federal law.
In 2005, Congress passed a shield law that prevents manufacturers from being held liable. Despite this, Highland Park Fourth of July victims are suing the industry.
"I think it's very important for victims to take on the gun industry because we are not going to get change on the federal level," said victims' attorney Antonio Romanucci.
On behalf of the victims, attorney Romanucci is taking on the industry as a way to circumvent the federal law. Victims are using an Illinois consumer protection law to sue Smith & Wesson over deceptive marketing practices. The gun manufacturer is the maker of the AR-15 assault rifle used in the Highland Park mass shooting.
"We are claiming the killer, the shooter here, in this instance, was groomed by Smith & Wesson as a boy, a child, as a teenager," Romanucci said.
Romanucci said gun-makers directly market and advertise to kids, especially through video games. Sandy Hook victims used a similar tactic against gun-maker Remington. Earlier this year, Remington agreed to pay victims $73 million in a settlement, but, the firearms industry said the Highland Park case is an uphill battle.
"The bottom line is the responsibility of those crimes and horrendous effects of those crimes lie with the individual who criminally misused that firearm," said Mark Oliva with the Firearm Industry Trade Association.
Romanucci acknowledged it will be a difficult case, since advertising is protected under free speech.
"When you take a case on in this magnitude, it's like taking on the tobacco industry 50-60 years ago," Romanucci said.
Also rare is suing the shooter's father. Shooting suspect Robert Crimo III was 19, and Robert Crimo Jr. sponsored his son's firearm application shortly after a suicide attempt and death threats to his family.
"This is somebody who basically gave these weapons of mass destruction to his son, knowing there was a mental health-type history with this child, who became an adult," Romanucci said.
Besides the civil suit against him, Robert Crimo Jr. faces criminal charges. He is charged seven counts of felony reckless conduct.

Been trying to read Jules Verne's Journey to the Moon because it was one of my grandfather's favorite books, but it's also just fuckin chalk full of technical details about the orbit of the moon that I have already memorized for class ages ago and I am wondering if it is maybe the compilation of technical details that he loved more than the story.
#The story is good tbf it's just also told to some degree around the technical stuff#Which is definitely given a pretty central role in the story#IDK maybe it's less like that after chapter 6#I am just having trouble maintaining steam through the third chapter of stuff I memorized for one of the two astronomy classes I took#One in high school and one at a college level#Anyhow I will get to and through this book it's just tough mentally#Cause of how much some of it feels like school#lol tbf some of these details I memorized by playing a bunch of Kerbal Space Program#I've been playing a real solar system mod pack and that not class is where I learned the delta v budget you need to get to the moon#Which they spend all at once but also which matches my understanding of the number pretty well#Barring an extra km/s that Verne probably is using to account for the extra drag of the cannon approach vs the rocketry approach#And also tbf I do not know the technical details about cannon manufacture at all beyond some of the basic materials physics stuff#They compel me less than the space details I do know tho#I also do very much love that the premise of the whole thing is 'Americans sure do fuckin love their guns'#Like the character stuff is genuinely fun and well done#It's just against every other chapter being a technical manual on some aspect of the thing#And a technical manual whose details I either know or know are outdated by better newer understandings#Like the creation of the planet section is kinda right but mostly wrong by modern understandings#But also does reflect the best understanding of the time but also I know the history of these ideas anyhow
