I'm more lucid now and everything with my apartment and the sewers seems to be fine. Please give Waylon my thanks, a lot of people could've died if he didn't help. I told some of my neighbors about what he did and they're apparently working on a gift for him? All of us really appreciate what he did. [Do you know his favorite food? For no reason in particular..]
hey, no problem.
he got all flustered when I told him you guys were grateful, but he seemed happy enough. something he's told me before is that he hasn't had a decent pot of jambalaya in years, so maybe that?

More fun with Lazy Researcher Telephone leading to the circulation of completely false information:
A 1764 court document (re-discovered by Gwendolin Mildo Hall) is currently believed to be the oldest reference to gumbo (as in the okra-and-meat stew, not okra itself). Shane K. Bernard said in 2011 that Hall had mentioned the document in a lecture, but she presumably didn't give detailed information, since he ended up e-mailing her to get the actual citation.
She pointed him to the Louisiana Historical Center, who sent him a copy of the document in question, which he posted a small snippet from. You don't have to contact the LHC to get the full document--it's been digitised (look towards the bottom right of page 4/21 for the reference to "un gombeau"), along with other documents pertaining to the same court case.
That lecture wasn't the only place where Hall had elaborated. Earlier, in 2005, Hall had published Slavery and African Ethnicities in the Americas: Restoring the Links, which contains a passage talking about Comba / Julia, the woman whose testimony contains the reference to "gombeau" (Bernard didn't mention this book). She describes what led to the 1764 court proceedings--fugitive slave Louis dit Foy "had organized a cooperative network among slaves, runaways, thieves, seamstresses, and street vendors" and the group 'stole' food for their social gatherings. Hall says of two women who were members of this group:
Comba and Louison, both Mandingo women in their fifties, were vendors selling cakes and other goods along the streets of New Orleans. They maintained an active social life, organized feasts where they ate and drank very well, cooked gumbo filé and rice, roasted turkeys and chickens, barbecued pigs and fish, smoked tobacco and drank rum. (Slavery and African Ethnicities, University of North Carolina Press, 2005, p. 99)
Hall cites as the source of her information "Records of the Superior Council of Louisiana, May 6 and May 10, 1768, contract between Evan Jones of Pensacola and Durand Brothers; declaration by Captain Peter Hill. Records of the Superior Council of Louisiana, 1768.05.10.02, Louisiana Historical Center, New Orleans" (FN 36, p. 187).
It is unclear from Hall's text whether "gumbo filé" is specifically named or described in these court documents (if it is, I have not yet found it--and it also seems strange that Hall wouldn't have pointed Bernard to that location), or what other reason Hall might have for asserting this. It may just be an assumption of her's. As written, it sounds like the "gombeau" mentioned isn't even sure to be modern "gumbo" (as Bernard points out, a dish of stewed okra with butter was called "gumbo" at this time and later). Hall's research interests do not centre around food.
From this point, someone must have found Bernard's reference to this court document, and also found the paraphrasing of the case proceedings in Hall's book. They must have mentioned the court document without quoting or citing it; and they must have quoted the passage from Hall that I quoted above, also without citing it, and made it seem as though the Hall passage was in the court document. Whoever this unforgiveable bumbling can be traced back to, whether him or someone else, Lolis Eric Elie at least recreated it. In 2005, he wrote in a letter to the New York Times:
The first known printed reference to gumbo was made in reference to food eaten not by French immigrants, but by African maroons who had escaped slavery in Louisiana. This passage, from a 1764 court document, was uncovered by Gwendolyn Midlo Hall, author of "Africans in Colonial Louisiana": "Comba and Louison, both Mandingo women in their 50's [sic], were vendors selling cakes and other goods along the streets of New Orleans. They maintained an active social life, organized feasts where they ate and drank very well, cooked gumbo filé and rice, roasted turkeys and chickens, barbecued pigs and fish, smoked tobacco and drank rum."
And then someone must have read that letter and believed Elie that that paragraph of Hall's was in the 1764 court document (it doesn't exactly sound like the kind of language I would expect to have been written as a summary of court proceedings in 1764, but I suppose they didn't think to check...)
So now, as a result of all of this jumbling of assumptions with evidence, and unwillingness to track down actual primary sources (even when someone has already digitised and quoted and translated them for you!), you have people confidently asserting that "gumbo filé" was specifically mentioned for the first time in 1764.
For example, Jonathan Olivier, writing for The Bitter Southerner in 2021, writes:
Looking back further at the historical record, there is more evidence of distinctions between types of gumbo. The first recorded mention of gumbo is from a 1764 court document involving escaped enslaved Africans, found by historian Gwendolyn Midlo Hall [...]. “Comba and Louison, both Mandingo women in their 50s [sic], were vendors selling cakes and other goods along the streets of New Orleans. They maintained an active social life, organized feasts where they ate and drank very well, cooked gumbo filé and rice, roasted turkeys and chickens, barbecued pigs and fish, smoked tobacco and drank rum.” The entire term “gumbo filé” is mentioned, a deliberate effort to highlight a soup thickened with powdered sassafras, not okra.
Yes, Olivier, the term "gumbo filé" was mentioned... by Gwendolin Hall in 2005, not by Comba in 1764! What a mess! What an absolute disgrace of a mess. Lmao.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Day No. 2, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Sept. 30, 2023
Leyla McCalla controls the weather.
An overcast day in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park suddenly turned sun-soaked when the former Carolina Chocolate Drop sang: My face to the sun as she performed Our Native Daughters’ “I Knew I Could Fly” during her Sept. 30 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass set on the Towers of Gold Stage.
“That’s awesome,” she said mid-verse as the Earth’s star emerged from the afternoon clouds.
Following the electric and steel guitar instrumentals of Hermanos Gutiérrez on the adjacent Swan stage and playing cello, banjo and electric guitar, backed with rhythm section and electric guitar, McCalla covered Kendrick Lamar’s “Crown” and offered a gumbo of New Orleanian, Haitian and American music delivered in English and Haitian Creole while showcasing her the Capitalist Blues and Breaking the Thermometer LPs.
The Sound Biteses’ day had begun in the pre-noon fog with the down-in-the-holler, old-time string music of Dry Branch Fire Squad playing the songs of Gillian Welch, Doc Watson and Bill Monroe on the Banjo stage. Later, it was gospel from the McCrary Sisters, who sung Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,” “Amazing Grace” and other numbers backed by a full band during short, five- to 15-minute sets on the Rooster stage, where Brennan Leigh offered a lunchtime menu of traditional country music.
It was also on the Rooster that Emmylou Harris previewed her Sunday appearance by guesting with Shawn Camp and Verlon Thompson and closing their Doc Watson tribute set with Guy Clark’s “Old Friends.”
Shortly afterward, Bettye LaVette sauntered onstage to deliver her grinding version of Bob Dylan’s “Things Have Changed.” From here, it was an impassioned reading of songs from the Randall Bramblett-written LaVette! album as the singer prowled the stage and proved her 77 years have cost her nothing in vocal prowess and stage presence.
“If I could write, this is what I would have said,” LaVette said in introducing the new songs, which worked better on stage than on wax.
Rickie Lee Jones attracted a ginormous crowd to Banjo - “I haven’t seen so many people in front of me for so long,” she said, soaking it in - and their enthusiasm rubbed off. Jones, whose band included Vilray on guitar and vocals, plus accordion and bass, was animated as she danced around the stage and crooned like a lounge singer when she wasn’t playing guitar, banjo or piano.
Opening with a radically rearranged “Danny’s All-Star Joint” more suited for the streets of New Orleans than the fields of Golden Gate, Jones went on to perform “I Won’t Grow Up” - for the first time, she said - “Last Chance Texaco,” “We Belong Together” and a sinewy rendition of Steely Dan’s “Show Biz Kids” that found Jones lifting her orange sweater to sing of the Rickie Lee T-shirt beneath.
Give RLJ the MVP for turning in HSB No. 2’s No. 1 gig.
Faced with the quintessential festivalgoers’ dilemma, Mr. and Mrs. Sound Bites split the last hour between Steve Earle’s uncharacteristically sleepy solo-acoustic set on the Banjo and Irma Thomas’ barnburner R&B/soul revival at the Rooster.
At 82, Thomas played the day’s most rambunctious set, ripping into “Time is on My Side” and getting the audience bouncing and waving their handkerchiefs on her mashup of “I Done Got Over It” -> “Iko Iko” -> “Hey Pocky Way” -> “I Done Got Over It.” That one might be ringing through Golden Gate’s trees along with the birdsong for some time to come.
Read Sound Bites’ coverage of HSB Day One here.

Reflections on 30 Years: The Ongoing Struggle to Define Blackness in America
by L. W. K. Catoe Jr.
On February 23, 2024, The Forum at Columbia University honored Black History Month with a free screening of the film Black Is... Black Ain't (1995), by Marlon Riggs. Black Is... Black Ain't explores the theme of Black identity through performances by choreographer Bill T. Jones, poet Essex Hemphill, and commentary from noted cultural critics Angela Davis, bell hooks, Dr. Cornel West, and others. The screening was followed by a conversation between the attendees and the event organizers, Columbia University Professor Jafari Allen and Novella Ford, Associate Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Riggs made Black Is… Black Ain’t as he was dying from AIDS. Death is a major theme throughout the film as it chronicles Riggs's illness and how his illness affected his life. In addition, Riggs speaks of his love for the church, his family, and his community and how all of those elements played a part in who he was as a person. But I was more specifically struck by how loved Riggs was. During the time this film was being made, AIDS was a stigma in many communities, and in many cases, victims of the disease were ostracized or shunned from their communities. However, Riggs was wrapped in love by all those around him and it was heartwarming to see.
The film complicates reductive notions of race through the history of Creole people, who would sometimes separate themselves from Blacks or “pass” based on the light color of their skin. Riggs himself was from the New Orleans community of Creoles. In the film, he explores the loose definition of the term creole, which in reality refers to various communities including those who passed for white, those who did not, and also Native Americans who lived and intermarried amongst Blacks.
In the discussion, an audience member pointed out how African Diasporic peoples have always found ways to share their stories, either through oral history and the figure of the Griot, or, in this case, by documenting their own lives. As moderator Novella Ford commented, these storytelling traditions work against “historical erasure”—when life goes undocumented, how can you prove that it happened? In this case, Riggs found a way by documenting his own experience, and he shows the ways in which his spirituality lifted him through this dark time of his life. But the tradition goes back to the beginnings of the history of the African Diaspora, which formed a strong connection to religion and culture, interconnecting religion with spirituality and leading Black people through their darkest periods. Black is... Black Ain't reflects on this history and shows how, despite the church vilifying AIDS due to its association with the LGTBQ community, the church still stood as the foundation of Riggs's strengths. Food was another source of strength for Riggs. In the film, you experience his joy of food, of Gumbo, of tradition, and of the memories of food in his life growing up.
Riggs does not portray himself as a victim. He expresses that being gay was never a regret in his life. This attitude transforms the stigma of being gay into a strength. It also raises the question of Black masculinity. Who are the gatekeepers of masculinity in the Black community, and how is this dynamic articulated geographically? At one point, an audience member questioned whether Riggs's experience as a gay Black man who was loved was based on where the film was located. But shooting took place nationwide, and at least 95% of the film was based outside of New York. Nevertheless, would the perspectives raised in the film have been different had the entire Black community in the United States been part of the conversation? By portraying Riggs’s personal history alongside the national Black community, the moderators suggested how the film reflected “linked fate,” an acute sense of awareness that what happens to the group will also affect the individual member.
During the conversation following the film, an audience member pointed out how the Black community traditionally gathers during birth and death. Both events mark milestones within the community, and the film remains true to the cultural celebration of the emergence of life and of the passing of lives lived. The film felt like a baptism, or as if Riggs were taking communion and self-cleansing, returning to the purity of birth. At the same time that it is a beginning, it is also an ending. Riggs is witness to the obituary that he is writing for himself, coming to terms with his life and accepting his death. Some of the most striking scenes were shot in the Louisiana Bayou, a return to Riggs’s origins. At the end of the film, Riggs runs naked through the swamp in New Orleans, calling to mind the innocence of birth, a time when nudity is void of any feelings of guilt or shame; and, instead, natural and next to God.

"George Bailey Was Never Born" Has A New Take On "It's A Wonderful Life"
It's a Wonderful life is a Christmas classic. However, when it was released in 1946, It’s a Wonderful Life was not an immediate hit with audiences. In fact, it put director Frank Capra $525,000 in the hole, which left him scrambling to finance his production company’s next picture, State of the Union.
In addition, though it didn’t make much of a dent at the box office, It’s a Wonderful Life found a whole new life on television—particularly when its copyright lapsed in 1974, making it available royalty-free to anyone who wanted to show it for the next 20 years. (Which would explain why it was on television all the time during the holiday season.) The free-for-all ended in 1994.
Now, iHeartPodcasts and Emmy Award-winning producer Kurt Engfehr and 2022 NAACP Image Award Outstanding Podcast nominee Ray Nowosielski have announced the release of “George Bailey Was Never Born,” a one-of-a-kind podcast experience that takes a definitive look at “It’s a Wonderful Life,” one of the most popular holiday movies of all time.
The series is a co-production of iHeartMedia and Double Asterisk, in association with True Stories, created by Engfehr, editor-producer of Oscar- and Palme d’Or-winning documentaries from director Michael Moore, and Nowosielski, producer of “Gumbo Coalition,” which began streaming on Max November 6th, and a story producer on “The Super Models,” streaming on Apple TV since September.
In the story, Joseph returns to narrate the podcast, reprising the character who tells fellow angel Clarence the story of Jimmy Stewart’s George Bailey over the 1947 Frank Capra directed classic.
The podcast features conversations with Stewart's daughter Kelly Stewart Harcourt, co-star Donna Reed's daughter Mary Owen, Capra's grandchildren Frank Capra III and Monica Capra Hodges, original story writer Philip Van Doren Stern’s grandchildren and others, as well as American influencers, artists and real modern small-town corollaries to the characters from the movie.
“George Bailey Was Never Born” details many never-before-told stories, ranging from the failure by Rashida Jones’ grandfather to renew the film's copyright to how Republic managed to regain control of it in 1993, from how the New York Times helped start a popular phenomenon of upside-downing the meaning of “It’s a Wonderful Life” to the abolitionist and anti-fascist intentions behind the movie’s creation, with implications for the MAGA movement today, and much more.
Three episodes take listeners inside the "real" Bedford Falls, Seneca Falls, New York, one spotlighting community banker Menzo Case's efforts to bring affordable housing there through his own Seneca County Habitat For Humanity Bailey Park. Case passed away suddenly of a heart attack on October 13th, leaving that initiative in doubt. Double Asterisk is donating a portion of proceeds to Bailey Park and encouraging listener donations to that, to their local Habitat for Humanity and to AFSP, in honor of the movie's twin causes of affordable homeownership and suicide prevention.
Check out George Bailey Was Never Born. By doing so, an angel may get its wings.

Whether over the course of his seventeen beloved LPs (2001’s The Esoteric Movement to 2022’s Lessons) or through songwriting/production/vocal collaborations with the likes of Jill Scott, Dwele, Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinna and others, fine-tuned R&B music ears have come to recognize and make a somewhat spiritual connection with his everyday relatable, multi-influenced vibe which mirrors their own lives and experiences. “It’s R&B and soul music, but I’m a hip-hop dude,” Eric replies, of his influences as it relates to his music’s appeal.
Indeed, nothing less than heartfelt gratitude for the blessing of being able to continue releasing music through his very own Blue Erro Soul Entertainment, as well as accolades which have included two successive Grammy nominations for “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” (for “A Tale of two” in 2010; “Still” in 2011), a BET J Virtual Award for “Underground Artist of the Year” (2008), being distinguished as the first independent artist to be nominated for a BET Award in 2007 and sold-out tours throughout the world is what makes Eric Roberson, "The Soul Man himself".

Character Bios
Note: The following image are what the characters for this blog will look like. And they are all in their early 20s.
Velma Dinkley: The Brains of the Mystery gang. She's very smart but very nerdy, explaining things that her friends won't always understand with great excitement and joy. She has a great interest in solving mysteries, believing that doing so will allow her to learn more about the hidden secrets of the world. She also tends to come off as sassy around others and sometimes her friends, but she does genuinely care for her friends. She became an activist thanks to joining her girlfriend, Marcie Fleach (Hotdog Water), in a couple of protests regarding the harming of nature and the mistreatment of minorities in society, earning them the shared title of the Ultimate Activist. Her catchphrase is 'Jinkies'.
Fred Jones: Leader, sort of, of Mystery Inc. He's a good mannered soul with a great sense of justice and enough physical strength to bench press 220(Which he often says.) He's not as smart as the other members of the gang, but he's not a full on moron either. He received the title of Ultimate Quarterback due to his impressive record as a football player at Crystal Cove/Coolsville High(You decide). He wanted to be called the Ultimate Trapper due to his love and high fascination with setting booby traps. Apparently he gets it from his parents. He also is a bit of a tinkerer when it comes to his van, outfitting it with modes and tech that seems.....nonsensical at first. Like a sentient GPS AI. Either way, when it comes to helping out his gang, he's more than willing to pull his weight to protect his friends. His catchphrases range from 'Hold the phone' to 'Let's split up, gang' to even 'It's Trapping time'.
Norville 'Shaggey' Rogers: A massive eater that gets frightened fairly easily. Shaggey is a massive weeb for cartoons, action shows, comics, and even anime, tokusatsu, and manga. He's sometimes called the 'Jack-of-all-trades' due to some of the bizzare skills he randomly exhibits at random times. When scared, he is capable of running at speeds that are olympic level world record breaking, he once screamed for hours upon hours, and he very nimble when it comes to hiding. He received the title of the Ultimate cook due to his many many many food recipes that, despite being unorthidox, really tasty. Recipes include: A ultra triple chocolate dipped coconut cake, a pizza with peanut butter with pineapple and pickles, the spiciest cajun gumbo that anyone has ever or will ever taste, and the snickers s'more, just to name a few. Desite his fears, he enjoys hanging around his friends and is more than happy to share his interests with them if they ever show interest. His catchphrase is 'Zoinks!'.
Daphne Blake: A highly quirky fashionista who tends to make slip ups sometimes. Her sense of fashion is beyond that of a normal person and she has the figure to pull off nearly anything she wears, earning her the title of the Ultimate Model. She's pretty friendly, making her the most sociable member of the gang. She's a black belt in Kung Fu, Aikido, Jujitsu, and Karate, making her capable of taking on anyone that would dare try to jump her. Daphne also tends let her overconfident nature get the better of her, landing her in trouble multiple times. Her catchphrase is 'Jeepers'.
Scoobert 'Scooby' Doo: The lovable talking mascot of the gang. Like his best friend, Shaggey, Scooby is a massive gultton, eating nearly anything Shaggey can cook up. His nose can sniff out anything from a 80 mile radius, he is highly durable, can match Shaggey is running speed, and he is somehow capable of full on speech and doing nearly anything a normal human can. He's often the glue that holds the gang together, getting along with everyone pretty well. His favorite snacks are Scooby Snacks, which are offered to him in exchange for his cooperations during investigations or literally anything else. Despite his fears, when the chips are down, he'll do everything he can to help his friend whenever they're in danger. His catchphrase is 'Scooby-dooby-doo!'.
