Adventures of The 144p Progenitor
Introduce: The USF Silent Path
Story #10
Five USF warships, three frigates and two cruisers, flew down into the planet of Darena to cover an investigation of the war being waged between, mainly, two warring humanoid tribes—Egrucian Separatists and Azkonce World Forces.
In the meantime, from a distant USF Carrier, the USF Silent Path, a crew of ten captains were working in the ship's planning room.
An alert came from the planning room's overhead, the synthetic, AI voice: Activating satellite audio feed of Yakkenden's battle zone, live in five. Four. Three. Two. One.
youtube
The five warships flew down through the VA line, breaking into the world's atmosphere to go into a hover right above an ongoing battle. They strafed and leveled at different heights in the sky, doing their best to remain stealthily away from the projectiles that were streaming back and forth from one side to the other. Intel showed that there were sixteen different kinetic zones on a large scale, four of which were abnormally terrifying in terms of weapon lethality and the severity of danger. On a level between one and ten, the battles in four zones were well into level nine, nearing ten.
What made matters worse was that Darena's weather was stormy on a near constant basis. Henceforth, the rivaling tribes, the Egrucians and the Azkonce, built their homes, bases, and military units to withstand the damages of an eternity of storms, typhoons, and hurricanes.
"Why did they choose to live here?" Asked Natalie, tuning herself into the audio feed of the warzone, part of the planning room's protocol. She was reviewing the planet's general information and studying the populace.
"It's their home planet, that's why they're here, sh$tty as it is," answered Captain Aries Velez.
"Do you hear that?! This place is awful!!" Natalie glowered. "Holy sh$t, I didn't know it was going to be that bad. Who do you have going?!"
Aries answered, "I sent five ships, and that should be enough to recover our explorer vessel safely. F$cker got spotted, but they didn't do anything, so we're waiting to hear from... any of their patrol units. It doesn't appear they've invested much in space, but they overly armored and equipped just about everything they have on the ground, from what we've seen. These things are... way beyond what we've ever thought possible for groundwars. The air support is no different, with the exception of their ability to somehow refuel using the atmospheric gases around them. Explorer unit figured it out when they didn't see any of the air support land, on either side. They were strafing the skies like... sharks, basically."
"Now that's new. I've never heard of anything like that," said Captain Jack Riffleton.
"Jack, this is a planet we probably don't want to return to, let alone have affiliations with, for now. These wars ain't got anything to do with us, so we're planning on... recovering the explorer unit, and getting the h$ll out of here," declared Aries. "We can proceed moving our fleet to Ortega-Y for resupply and further instruction."
"No war, then, right?!" Natalie stated, begging for an answer.
Aries bit his top lip inwardly and answered in a sorry tone, "No war, Natalie. Hate to say it, but... we're going to be avoiding war with anyone for as many generations as possible, considering the funding, our contributors, and especially the lives of our fellow USF members."
"Hate to say it?! What are our ships doing in there, now?! I want to know what's going on down there!!" Natalie demanded in as calm a demeanor as possible. She was not feeling calm at all, and the sound of the war was penetrating her morale.
Jack sighed hard, consoling her, "Calm down, Natalie, our ships that went in are built for this. Only if we stay there are we... going to have some major issues. But, we made sure, the rest of the captains and I, that who we sent in has the most updated intel possible to make the best determinations, guided by our universal-class AI systems."
"Jack, the Explorer just lost control down there," Captain Corey Randalls insisted in a low whisper, utilizing his classic US Midwest accent. He had just walked through the door to deliver that message. "We're going to have to recover them above a military certified warzone! Our guys might have to land down there! Why were they ordered to fly in to that zone?!" Corey waved Jack to follow him out of the planning room and into the security corridor annexed to the command bridge.
"Excuse me, Natalie," Jack said, pardoning himself from the planning table. He stepped outside with Corey to discuss further the situation.
"Jack, who ordered them to fly in to that zone?" Corey pushed.
"Would you please... close the door here, ma'am?" Jack ordered to a security officer standing nearby the planning room. She nodded and closed the door.
youtube
Corey encroached a bit more, "Well, Jack? I'm waiting."
Jack continued with Corey, "While we were planning our scouting expedition, we learned that the battlefield was split into segments, some hot and cold, so we chose the cold zone. The problem was that when we had the Explorer unit going in there, it met probable resistance near the VA line, and we had to spend an extra amount of resource in order to pull it up and then place it again... closer to the planet's low orbit. There wasn't much time to make that decision, either, due to all the storm warnings that were coming in. One of the storms nearly side-swiped our Explorer unit, right near the original ZoO (Zone of Operation) we had designated for its procedure to begin."
"So, then why was this location chosen? Why not land in the more peaceful part of the planet where we wouldn't have had to send in five warships to conduct a search and rescue? ... something I'm personally holding you and everyone in that planning room accountable for," Corey scolded.
Jack tossed his tongue around in his mouth a bit, locking his brown eyes to Corey's hazel, unreadable eyes. He breathed in, took his hat off, then brushed his geled hair back with both hands. He placed his cap back on his head.
"Jack, these operations aren't jokes. This isn't funny, Jack. You, and the other captains in that room are responsible for bringing back six USF ships that could be determined as lost by the end of this entire operation. Did you calculate the odds of Darena having a space force of their own, or communication with other planetary forces? Did you anticipate Darena possibly having a fit about our presence overall, and possibly gunning down all six of our ships?"
"They could try, sir—" Jack started, trying to engage in a more dominant approach.
"I'm serious, Jack. You are going to need a lot of luck here. We have a great planetary force behind us and a great crew aboard this ship, too, but we are not in the business to start more wars nor intervene with wars that have nothing to do with our best interest. We, the United Space Force and all branches we are responsible for, politely decline any bad news to come of this expedition, and we do not need you nor anyone else botching the integrity of our mission and that of our staff," Corey calmly scolded, though fervent in his delivery.
Jack unloaded, "Corey, you can relax, I'm not... doing anything to harm the integrity of the United Space Force, our fellow men and women, none of that. We came here for an expedition for the greatness of the USF, to impact our species with breathtaking intelligence on a planet that is currently at war and possibly in need of our help. I'm not saying we go in there and fight them for... them. I'm saying I have to think this through operationally, so if you could give me and the other captains a chance, that would be fantastic. I'm not blind—"
"Jack, you listen here. You f$ck this up, all the pretty mission talk aside, you're answering to the USF, and we could have you court marshaled, and it isn't going to be anywhere near Earth. You hear me, son?" Corey emphasized, speaking low and quiet in his tone, but the rage behind it was unmissable.
Jack kept up, "You're out of line, there, Corey—"
"Jack. I mean it. That's a lot of lives aboard those ships. That's a lot of material and time and training, and that's a lot of trouble for us as a fleet tasked with the very basics. Whether or not that changes, that isn't up to us. You get Admiral Alfred on this operation, up our a$$es, we're f$cking screwed, and you should take me very seriously here, Jack," steamed Corey.
"Alright, Corey," Jack said, annoyed and keeping his chin up.
"Alright, Jack," Corey replied, as though to shut Jack's mouth.
Jack dismissed himself and allowed his pride to muster before disengaging, breathing in and out slowly, and progressing back into the planning room.
Corey walked out of the security corridor back to the command bridge, fuming underneath, though not as upset as he had been just before that.
youtube
Back in the planning room, the captains stayed consistent and as clear minded as possible, despite the pressure of the war audio.
"Jack," Natalie said looking up from the table, welcoming him back into the room. She looked at his eyes and could tell the talk with Captain Corey did not go well. She tried to soothe him.
Meanwhile, four of the captains—Aries, Michael, Dan, and Damon, were arguing with each other about what to do next. The other captains were simply listening, sweating, and unable to keep in negotiations due to the pressures from the four captains arguing loudly. The topic was consistent with what had just occurred to the Explorer unit.
Aries was trying to even the mood out between Dan and Damon who were unable to agree on whether or not the five orbiting warships should lower down towards the Explorer. Michael tried to stay on Dan's side, knowing that Damon's young mind was not giving good enough rhyme and reason to bring them closer to the ground. Damon argued fastidiously that the Explorer unit was soon going to become either a metallic carcass or it taken away and the crew imprisoned.
"Damon, the warships aren't there for what just happened. You do realize that, right? We don't have the authority to get that low," Dan stated.
"Dan, the Explorer crew is still in there. They were guaranteed an exit strategy was available for their bravery to the cause, and you're f$cking ditching them to the planet. Do you f$cking hear that?!" Damon yelled.
"Damon, chill," Michael ordered. "You gotta chill."
"No!! Man!! ...? You f$cking lowered them into the battlefield, you get them the f$ck out of there!!" Damon fought, enraged.
"Damon," Dan chuckled. "I understand how you feel about losing them, but this is out of our hands now, Damon. You're asking us, now, to risk losing five more ships."
"And those weapons the tribes are using... yeah. Devastating," Michael added, chuckling, very cautiously looking over toward Damon.
"Can we get the authority to just use what we've got to smoke screen, pick up, clean up, and get out of there?" Asked Ramon.
Aries inflected, "I don't see why not. Seriously, to me, it isn't an issue, if we're quick about it. To me, authority to do it is less of a priority than saving their lives, if that means anything to you guys. The problem is—"
Jack interrupted, "The problem is that we weren't supposed to send them in like that in the first place. Huge mistake overall. We should've just sent three frigates in, or kept the Explorer in the bay until the airspace was clear enough for them to do their job and get out of there. Now, with the Explorer downed, we're gonna have to do it."
"That's what I'm saying!!" Damon shoved. "They're one of ours!! Why is this even an argument?!"
Dan attempted to reason with Damon, though opting to use his deep, resonant tone. "Because, it's about the risk!! Damon!! One ship versus five more in a combat heavy arena? You're out of your mind. The population in these two warring nations, tribes, whatever you want to call them, is eight... billion, that's four point six billion on one side and three point four billion— people— on the other side. Their military powers are greater, their tech is greater, what the f$ck do you expect to get out of this affair after we've already lost one unit, Damon?? It's one unit, and sending more units in— why?! You see what I'm saying, right Damon?!"
Natalie yelled, "They're not gone, Dan!! They lost control of their ship, and they're down there somewhere in Yakkenden!! These. Are. People!!"
"Yeah, doesn't matter," Michael said, laughing to himself. He continued, gently buzzing, "The intel suggests that they'll shoot back, most definitely, seeing anything unmarked as an instigator of violence against their cause, even if we go in there without packing heat. They appear to be xenophobic, on top of this. The war these people are in, is classified as being a world war's worth of violence, and that's only on four fronts, Damon. It's the same as a world war, it's not just a concept. It's larger than you think. You're gonna have to accept that."
"You guys are being absolutely— unfair— to the Explorer unit and its crew. You have— gall... to even suggest... at all, that the USF would allow us to abandon them," Natalie rebuked with great spite. "How can you feel nothing about a whole crew of men and women?!"
"What was it? A mere twenty people packed in basically a cutter? It's hardly a loss," debated Captain Myles very coldly.
"Regardless, I don't want to spend more going in," Dan said. "That's final, from me."
"It's not an option, guys," Captain Ramon said, supporting Natalie. "Come on. We're being realistic about this, right? We're not going to leave them behind. We sent them in to recover intel and you want to bury them for following your orders?!"
"It's most definitely an option!—" Came back Dan, chuckling. "We're risking hundreds of lives going in there if you listen to your emotions. Again, that's up against billions!"
"We're running out of time on this, you guys," Michael said toward Aries, wanting to round up the conclusion. "If saving them is a priority, you guys, we need to do something now. My suggestion is... don't chance it. They were trained to survive, but we were not all equipped to have a war with a planet that we still, I feel, hardly know about. End of discussion."
Damon looked at Dan, eyes filled with anger. Dan crossed his arms and looked up and down the strategic table, groaning and clearing his throat. Michael sat with his arms crossed, waiting. Aries nodded. Natalie looked downward at the table, nearly hunching her neck, then side-eyed Dan and Michael.
"Take a vote then, because you're right, our frigates and cruisers can't wait forever," said Aries. "I'm about ready to give the order to pull them back into the fleet."
Dan asked, "Are they in range of any hostile ships and what are the missile capabilities? You guys hear this right?! It sounds like a nightmare in there, like a death sentence in there. If they can hit us, surface-to-space—"
Damon forced out, "Dan!! That doesn't matter!! Just send our ships in, shields up!! We can ready our own shields up here, too!! Salvage the team, shield them, and then we report back to USF!!" It really sounded like he had personal ties with someone onboard. "Why don't you want to save, them, man?! We have the technology!!"
Myles and Michael chuckled, causing Dan to smile at them. Murmurs between captains began to fade into focus.
"Alright, guys, chiiiilll," Michael insisted, triggered by Damon's passionate discourse.
Ramon was hushing them, as well. "Guys? Yeah. Cool it."
"Call the vote!" Aries demanded. "I say we call that vote. Sounds like things there are getting more vicious the longer we wait. We're not going in there, it isn't fair to send anyone else in, but we already sent the Explorer unit. Bottom line, there, guys, I'm for Damon."
"Thank yooouuu!! Someone has a f$cking heart and some sense!!" Damon cheered.
"I agree, let's have a vote, before Captain Corey comes back, especially. Shigi, set up a vote for ten people, a one-by-one, voting for or voting against. We'll go around the table," Jack called out, subtly subdued despite taking lead. He almost went with an 'all-in-favor and all-against' style.
An AI voice came back on the overhead speakers: Vote begins now. First voter, check in with your name. Say 'for' or say 'against.'

Also trying the Sykov pistol. Eh, it's okay I guess. I'll still pick Renetti as my bias.

N7 Month, 2019: Day 4 - Destruction
Keeping up with these through the skin of my teeth.
++
The Intelligences had no names, had no need for names. Still, it was an inevitability of the Trial Races that they would assign names to anything they encountered. This Cycle, the Intelligences were referred to as ‘the Death Machines’, another Cycle might see them called ‘Reapers’ or ‘Butchers’. Far more rare was the Intelligence that gained a singular name, as if it were an individual. The Trial Races thought with small minds.
This one had been called in the previous Cycle ‘Architect’. They had announced their presence as the ‘Architect of your ascendance’ and that was enough for the Trial Races of that Cycle to call them Architect, and to think of them as a singular entity. Architect could not be flattered nor insulted by something as base as the Trial Races. Still, it was precisely for this reason that the other Intelligences had specifically and unanimously designated them as a special advisor for this Cycle’s cleansing.
“We have been experiencing difficulty with this new Trial,” came the transmission from another Intelligent Nation on Architect’s port side.
“It is the Lyceum Deficiency, again.” Architect answered the unspoken question. They had run into this last Cycle, where the ascendant Trial Species had not been compatible with assimilation and transformation into a new Intelligence. It had been Architect’s principle assignment to solve the deficiency—dominating a Cycle without producing another Intelligence from the most ascendant species was counter-productive to their purposes.
“We are considering other options.”
“Our calculations must change,” Architect responded. “We must consider the target species’ Lyceum conversion rate when calculating its rate of ascendancy. Lyceum deficient subjects must not be flagged as ascendant species.”
“We must collect data from this species,” the other Intelligence continued. “It is unacceptable to lose this Cycle’s information due to an unforeseen evolution.”
“We must elevate a different species.”
“The other species of this cycle have been designated as inferior to the target species.”
“We must reconsider.”
Beneath the two conversing Intelligences, a blue planet with a swirling, storm laden atmosphere burned as fellow capitol ships glassed the western hemisphere, resources depleted and population harvested to fight groundwars on other worlds.
“11,000 Cycles of calculations are not easily reconsidered.”
“Species 0004,” Architect recited. “Has an acceptability quotient of .93. They are not Lyceum deficient. They dominate the galaxy.”
“They did not discover the relays on their own,” the other Intelligences opined. “This has always been crucial to our calculations.”
“Our calculations must change. We must be more flexible with them.” It was the race stored within Architect that allowed them to be more flexible with their considerations—it was the first target race that had posed a significant threat to the Intelligence in their own Cycle. Still easily defeated, in the end, but they had been allowed to evolve beyond the level the Intelligence usually allowed. They had made no attempt to dominate the galaxy, had not begun constructing artificial intelligence. They had been, in all Cycles before and since, an anomaly. Architect still felt their wisdom stored within them, that was why they harvested target species to begin with, so their wisdom would endure and aid in the preservation of life, in the ascendancy of all worthy life. But Architect felt no allegiance to the calculations which led to its own creation, and neither should any of the Intelligences. Sentimentality was a depravity they weeded out of the constructs they created. That was their gift.
But Architect’s target species had been the first since the inception of their great trial that had not, through the consensus of a billion, billion voices removed from their mortal passions, agreed immediately to the program of continued galactic destruction.
This was a legacy Architect had never been free of in all the Cycles since. The preservation of all life was less important to the voices that made up Architect’s intelligence than was the pure discovery of the trial itself. It showed in the way they dissented from the other Intelligences, in the way it advised when it was its duty to do so.
“We shall collect species 0001 and begin undergoing tests to isolate the Lyceum deficiency.”
“No,” Architect answered, though it was probably outside their purview to do so. The burning of the planet below them was almost complete, the continents wreathed in planetary fire, the earth splitting and magma surging up to swallow all evidence of civilization on the surface. “Let them all be destroyed.”
