finally watched 'longlegs' tonight, and man is it a beautifully made, expertly constructed film. mood and atmosphere felt so appropriate and put you in the right frame of mind for what they were trying to do. It felt creepy and dirty, ominous and threatening. shot compositions were gorgeous and the use of the 4:3 vignette or rounded edges (whatever its called) felt appropriate… for a minute i thought the whole movie was gonna be like that, thankfully it was only in a few scenes, and felt like it was for a purpose.
unfortunately i just didnt care for the story it was telling or rather I mean I was fine with the story they were telling, I just didnt think the story was executed linearly with as much care and precision as the look and feel of everything else in the movie. Its doing a bunch of things at first, but you start off thinking the movies going to be a like police procedural, and then they introduce some supernatural elements which then really takes it right out of the kind of cat and mouse / mystery movie you spend the first 10-15 mins thinking its going to be. Things you think should take some time to build up to, just happen. And I get it the movie is not really a police procedural, its more light supernatural horror but idk, theres that police procedural I was kinda wanting because of how the movie started. the supernatural thing kinda gets us to plot points quickly, and to me that felt a little too quick, a little too forced or something. Idk I mean I get why they do that, and why it all comes together at the end, but a little slower with the build up and police work would have helped build more of the tension, I think.
Also you can pretty much guess where its all going, I mean there are definitely some weird right turns you will not guess, and those are good moments, but almost from the beginning, they are like ‘who is the accomplice? Who is the accomplice?’ And its like yea, duh, we know, like they made that pretty clear almost right off the bat, so when it is revealed, you’re like, uh yeah, we knew that lol
also, what really took me out of the movie each and every time was Nic cage. They should have absolutely not had him in this role. His voice was so ridiculous, the choices in like singing were like not scary or creepy at all, it was just silly and each and every time all I saw was Nic cage, maybe if his voice was lower and creepier or something, idk, its just Nic cages voice, and it just didnt work for me. They should have had some unknown actor or anyone else in his role. Someone whos intimidating and actually creepy. I got nothing creepy or ominous about his choices. and I think its clear they knew that, cause they shellacked him in that makeup… anyway to not see Nic cage, but his voice was a dead giveaway each time.
Maika Monroe was fantastic tho, and it was really great to see Blair underwood coming out of wherever hes been for 30 years ago, back from la law I guess lol. He looks great, and he has such a great voice. Also really great to see Alicia Witt! Almost unrecognizable, I really hope they caked her in old age makeup, cause at first I was like is that her? Cant be, there’s no way Alia Atrides is old enough to have a 30+ year old child lol also nice to see sally draper in this, and that Oz Perkins has a cast of actors he likes working with. She was great in his other movie the blackcoats daughter.
Overall it was the visuals that were the standout in the movie, the director, Oz Perkins, who is the son of my bby Anthony Perkins, is really good at building these atmospheric moody visuals, he also did a movie called Gretel and Hansel which also was more visually appealing than it was a good story. and I just read that his brother, Elvis Perkins did the score. Ive loved his album Ash Wednesday for almost a couple decades now, and the score really helped build the tension and really worked with movie.
It got so much hype at first so Im glad I saw some reasonable reactions too, cause it lowered my expectation. At first Id heard it was the scariest movie ever!! And it’s not. I’m glad I went in not thinking that. So its not a bad movie whatsoever, I def wouldnt say I loved it, there are choices that I dont think work with the story, and that really dampens what couldve been something special, cause visually and atmospherically its gorgeous.

S1E10: “Organ Grinder”—B, I think… (Watched 3/9/24)
“You know, I’ve been at this job a while, but it seems like this town is just getting weirder.” – Hank (brushing up against the revelation that he’s a character in a weekly fantasy procedural series)
First, the Hansel and Gretel connection: After the opening quote, I actually forgot until a scene later in the episode where Nick and Juliette approach a homeless brother and sister and I made the connection between this “Gracie” and “Hanson” and the fairy tale. That was a fun little jolt. I did wonder how well this story about a newly-introduced kind of Wesen harvesting human organs was going to dovetail in any sort of way with the source material aside from just the concept of children being some type of cannibalized, but then Hanson ends up using bits of the puka shell necklaces that had been present throughout the episode to leave a trail for the cops to find when the brother and sister are themselves abducted at the climax. I groaned when I realized what was happening. Like, it… works, but it still has that little bit of cringe in its modernization that really makes it (and Grimm as a series doing this adaptational thing episode after episode) sing.
One thing that both has to be addressed about this episode but that also feels kind of awkward to bring up in a casual, little write-up like this, though, is the depiction of the “Geiers” (henceforth, “Gs,” just to be safe)—a species of hook-nosed monsters that abduct human children to harvest their blood and organs for Wesen medicinal use. I thought I might be misremembering the exact particulars of the antisemitic concept of blood libel, but after a post-viewing Google and Wikipedia… I have mixed feelings about rating this one too highly.
I’m obviously not going to claim that Grimm is intentionally deploying that conspiracy to some sinister end, just that there’s an incredibly unfortunate combination of imagery and plot in this episode. There are some early mentions of vampires, for example, and my one thought was that the Gs might have been meant to resemble Nosferatu’s Count Orlok (the vampire itself potentially being an antisemitic design), and the exaggerated nose was added as some sort of “original character, do not steal”-style measure that just made things even worse. Or maybe it’s a visual synthesis of Orlok and the hooked beak of a vulture given the apparent association between “G” and that animal, though the relationship between the concept of a vulture and the word/name and Jewish stereotypes stills seems fraught. However the combination of the elements, visual and narrative, in Grimm was achieved, the end-result does not look good. I was tempted to say “This episode hasn’t aged well,” but it really seems to have just been born old, in this regard.
Tumblr media
On a lighter note, here’s an exchange between Captain Renard and Sergeant “Comrade”(?) Wu that I enjoyed a lot, after they find a bunch of human organs drying for processing (a pretty strikingly grotesque image): “Well, whichever way you look at it, it’s still cannibalism.” / “Uh, I think it’s pronounced ‘capitalism.’”
The fact that it’s the clinic—part of the American healthcare system, a notoriously blood-thirsty branch of capitalist living—that’s ultimately revealed to be keeping the vulnerable kids healthy just to cut them up for parts to be sold in a sort of apothecary with a certain upper-class vibe (to a secret race of non-humans, but I’m not dipping back into that again) feels like it could be taken for something meaningful: Raise up and support the youth just enough to cannibalize/capitalize on them, literally consuming their lives.
If I wanted, there’s plenty of fun stuff here to recount, like the premise of flipping the exotic animal parts as… “enhancement” to be animal-like beings using human parts for that purpose. That Monroe tells Nick this and also throws in a quick mention that, actually, there’s no truth to the exotic animals thing is fun for me since it feels like the writers/people behind the show coming through in the writing a bit. Almost like they felt a moral responsibility to throw in a quick mention, like activism in miniature. It’s cute.
This bit from Monroe during the aforementioned conversation is also very cute: “You probably didn’t know that your testicles— I mean, not your testicles specifically. . . .” This is over a little dinner with some wine, too!
There’s some great Juliette stuff in the mix. The episode focuses pretty hard early on about whether Nick should tell her the truth since her not knowing is becoming dangerous. Then, we get this sequence where Nick and Juliette take Gracie and Hanson out to dinner, and Nick more or less ends up interrogating them, cop-style, but we can see that Juliette is picking up on something he isn’t, and she figures out Gracie liked one of the other boys who disappeared and is then able to get more information by empathizing than Nick was with his more forceful approach. When he compliments her afterward, we can read between the lines to connect back to the conversation with Monroe—Nick’s clearly wondering if Juliette can handle This, and in the strained silence they enter into just before he gets an interrupting phone call, you can feel him trying to decide whether to tell her or not.
When I saw the intense shaky camera in the woods during the opening scene of kids on the run from their captors, I thought the show might be losing its touch, but despite some further goofiness with the visuals (like the use of slow motion when the head G is about to fall into her own bonfire while fighting Nick), it still has this deft hand with weaving together visuals and plot elements or themes that make me want to just recite my full list of Fun Bits I couldn’t help but write down as they happened.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl
(2015) Marielle Heller 1h 42m [Day 3 - 2024]
"What's the point of living if nobody loves you? Nobody sees you? Nobody touches you" - Minnie
Tumblr media
It's 1976 San Francisco and Minnie is overwhelmed with self-satisfaction. You see Minnie has just had sex for the first time, the thing that she has been longing so desperately for. Because if you are not being desired do you even exist?
Thus is the setup for "The Diary of a Teenage Girl", and while Minnie is 15, this is not a film geared toward that age group.
We quickly learn that Minnie's paramour (Bel Powley) is her mother's 35-year-old boyfriend Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård), so we know immediately that her bravado is misplaced and that she's being taken advantage of. Minnie cannot see it that way. Love is attention from her point of view.
Minnie lives with her single mom Charlotte (Kristen Wiig) and her sister Gretel (Abby Wait) in a rented place, where any night could become a party.
Tumblr media
We get the sense that Charlotte has also run through a string of relationships to get to this point in her life. When it comes to looking for care from the wrong people, the apple did not fall far from the tree.
In this world of free love, minimal supervision and no social media we see transformational events happen in secret with their impact oozing into the day to day.
I appreciated the onscreen relationship between Minnie and Charlotte. There is love between them, but neither is equipped very well. It's a thorny relationship, and true.
Tumblr media
The film does a good job of not pitying Minnie, and not letting Minnie feel like she's broken in any way. Her lessons all arrive the hard way.
Explicitly so. We see the sexual encounters that occur, which made me grateful to learn that Bel Powley was 22 at the time of filming.
"The Diary of a Teenage Girl" does not pull it's punches, and it benefits from this approach. It's the quotidian horror of abuse. It's also about moving forward with your scars and your humanity.
Recommended

PAIR WITH: I'd pair this movie with Andrea Arnold's "Fish Tank". It's about a 15-year-old in a Scottish housing project who dreams of leaving to become a dancer and the desperate lengths she'll go to for attention.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Longlegs LONGLEGS MOVIE REVIEW The hype is here for director/writer Osgood Perkins new horror film Longlegs. It’s everywhere. Even not huge horror fans I know are talking about it in anticipation. Which is weird because I only know a handful of people who actually saw his terrific other films, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel and Hansel, and I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Chalk it up to NEON who knows how to do marketing by promoting lead actress Maika Monroe talking about how working versus Nic Cage as the titular…whatever…absolutely terrified her. She plays FBI agent Lee Harker… Read More »Highly Suspect Reviews: Longlegs read more on One of Us

Longlegs: A New Standard in Serial Killer Horror Films
Tumblr media
"It legitimately had me on the verge of tears in terror," shared one early viewer. Early audiences are raving about Nicolas Cage's latest film, Longlegs, calling it the best serial killer horror since The Silence of the Lambs hit theaters in 1991. Directed by Oz Perkins (Gretel & Hansel, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House), the movie is set in the 1990s and follows FBI agent Lee Harker (played by Maika Monroe) as she delves into a series of murders linked to a Satanic killer known as Longlegs (played by Cage). Oz Perkins, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Scheduled for release in the UK on July 12, coinciding with its wider US release, Longlegs has already garnered significant acclaim from early screenings. Matt Neglia, editor of Next Best Picture, praised the film on Twitter, describing it as "one of the best serial killer films in recent memory." He highlighted its "psychologically scarring" nature and called it a "sinister and unnerving descent into hell that will haunt your mind and soul." Another viewer confessed that the film left them "on the verge of tears in terror" and advised against watching it alone. Fans have lauded Perkins for infusing dread and terror into every frame, with Monroe delivering a hypnotic performance and Cage's portrayal expected to haunt viewers' nightmares. Audience members have reported lingering fear long after the credits rolled. One person remarked, "Saw Longlegs this morning and now I’m just supposed to… carry on with my day? It’s like Osgood Perkins saw Silence of the Lambs and thought, ‘Nah, not f***ed up enough for me.’” Cage's transformation into the killer is only hinted at in the Longlegs trailer. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cage likened this approach to "driving people towards a freak show at a circus tent." He explained, "We’ve got the thing behind the curtain, and when there’s enough people gathered around, we’re going to pull the curtain." This strategy, he said, is akin to "putting a warning label on a jar of nitroglycerin." Describing his character, Cage warned, "The monster is a highly, highly dangerous substance. The way it’s moved, unveiled, deployed has to be treated very carefully. Forget about the movie theater blowing up; the whole city could blow up, nay the country, maybe even the world. He is going to change your reality. Your doors of perception are going to open, and your life is not going to be the same.” Following the intense reactions to early screenings, Perkins expressed surprise at how deeply his film has disturbed viewers. Longlegs promises to be a gripping and terrifying addition to the genre, leaving an indelible mark on those brave enough to watch. Read the full article

Pick your fridged female character: Maureen (technically not fridged) or Gretel
Technically, neither of them were fridged - Gretel didn’t die for a guy’s Man Pain either. She just... died. If she was used to have Luke be Much In Pain because a teen under his care died but like we never even SAW Luke’s reaction to her death?? Which also shows the care of the show, tbh.
But like... Gretel! For one, because I have a weakness for white-haired characters and she just... really stood out. For another because seriously we need pack. The pack is like literally Bat, Maia and Russell I guess, by the end of the show. I don’t understand why people decide to write about werewolf packs and then not write a proper pack and pack-dynamic.
I would have loved for Maia to have a werewolf best friend she can rely on?
Maureen was, I don’t know, there was the potential there too, Clary and Simon’s other friend. But I guess I see more appeal in the werewolf-side of things.
