The Pulitzer Prize, widely regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in American journalism and the arts, announced its 2024 winners and finalists on Monday at Columbia University. This prestigious award program recognizes exceptional contributions across various categories, from investigative reporting to groundbreaking music compositions. Here's a closer look at the 2024 ceremony's highlights. 2024 Pulitzer Prizes Justin Chang Wins Criticism Award for "Richly Evocative" Film Reviews The 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism was awarded to Justin Chang, currently the film critic for The New Yorker. Chang's award recognizes his 2023 work published while he was a film critic at the Los Angeles Times. The Pulitzer Committee lauded his "varied and richly evocative" writing that reflects how American audiences engage with cinema today. Diverse Nominees Showcase Breadth of Film Criticism Other nominees in the criticism category further illustrate the diverse voices and approaches within film analysis. Zadie Smith, a renowned novelist and essayist, received a nomination for her New York Review of Books review of the 2022 film "Tar." Vinson Cunningham, The New Yorker's theater critic, was also nominated for his body of work in 2023, commended for his "formidable knowledge of the stage and the mechanics of performance along with canny observations on the human condition." Special Citation Honors the Legacy of Cultural Critic Greg Tate A special citation was awarded posthumously to the late Greg Tate, a cultural critic whose work with The Village Voice and Rolling Stone left a lasting impact. Marjorie Miller, administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, praised Tate's unique language that blended elements of literature, academia, popular culture, and hip-hop. She further emphasized his influence on future generations of writers and critics, particularly those of color, highlighting the "aesthetic, innovations, and intellectual originality" that marked his pioneering hip-hop criticism. Unveiling the 2024 Journalism Award Winners Beyond the realm of film criticism, the Pulitzer Prizes honor excellence in a multitude of journalistic endeavors. Here's a breakdown of some key journalism awards: Breaking News Photography: Lookout Santa Cruz staff for their coverage of the devastating local effects of the January 2023 floods. 🙌🏿#ArtIsAWeapon This is fantastic news, and the @themuseumofmodernart #JustAboveMidtown exhibition was inspiring and empowering!!
"MoMA announces the establishment of the Just Above Midtown Archives in the Museum’s Archives, Library, and Research collections, following the Museum’s recent exhibition Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces. Started by #LindaGoodeBryant in 1974, Just Above Midtown (JAM) was an exhibition and creative space started by #Blackartists and curators that welcomed people of many generations and races in New York City until 1986. A hub for Conceptual art, abstraction, performance, and video, JAM proposed an expansive idea of #Blackart and encouraged thinking beyond its commercialization. The exhibition used archival photos, videos, and other contextual historical material from the #JAMArchives to give visitors a sense of the alternative model of art it championed to respond to a society in need. As a part of MoMA’s collection, the JAM Archives will be available for activation in the Museum’s galleries and for consultation and research at MoMA by curators, art historians, artists, journalists, researchers, students, and the public."
Reposted from @t.jeanlax “Artists’ imaginations and creativity shaped and made JAM what it was and what it continues to be today, fresh and alive. After 50 years in storage, the JAM archive has a home at MoMA where it can continue to energize, challenge, and inspire current and future generations of artists and those of us who are fortunate to engage and experience their work.” —Linda Goode Bryant 💐
S/o @michelleelligott chief of moma archives library and research collections who co-led on the establishment of the jam archives 💫

Invisible Jukebox with Greg Tate, full transcript
I was very sorry to learn of Greg Tate passing last month. This was my first interview with Greg, I interviewed him again for my book Common Tones in December 2020. The WIRE has kindly hosted a full transcript of the Invisible Jukebox piece which they commissioned in 2004. Our conversation lasted close to three hours--the discussion of one Sun Ra track lasted almost 30 minutes--and the transcript is more than double the length of the printed article. Amazing to see Greg’s mind work in real time as I play him these tracks. Please find it here.

Spreads from 'Basquiat's "Defacement": The Untold Story,' a Black History Month featured title, published by @guggenheim Jean-Michel Basquiat painted 'Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart)' on the wall of Keith Haring’s studio in 1983 to commemorate the death of a young black artist who died from injuries sustained while in police custody after being arrested for allegedly tagging a New York City subway station. 'Defacement' is the starting point for the present volume, which focuses on Basquiat’s response to anti-black racism and police brutality. 'Basquiat’s “Defacement”: The Untold Story' explores this chapter in the artist’s career through both the lens of his identity and the Lower East Side as a nexus of activism in the early 1980s, an era marked by the rise of the art market, the AIDS crisis and ongoing racial tensions in the city. Texts by @lalabouvier @nespector @jfaithalmiron and #GregTate are supplemented by commentary from artists and activists such as Luc Sante, Carlo McCormick, Jeffrey Deitch, Kenny Scharf, Fred Braithwaite and Michelle Shocked, who were part of this episode in New York City’s history, which parallels today’s urgent conversations about state-sanctioned racism. Basquiat’s painting is contextualized by ephemera related to Stewart’s death, including newspaper clippings and protest posters, samples of artwork from Stewart’s estate and work made by other artists in response to Stewart’s death and the subsequent trial, including pieces by Haring, Andy Warhol, David Hammons, George Condo and Lyle Ashton Harris. The last 48 hours have been rough: we lost one of the greatest music and cultural critics of the modern day, the single most influential bassist in Jamaican music history, and one of the last true piano talents of the bebop era. 1. @avantgroidd came into my line of sight in the late '80s when my fascination with bands from the downtown scene in Manhattan hit a frenzy, and eventually to his writing in places like the Village Voice, NYT and ArtForum . Greg Tate wrote some of the most blisteringly incisive pop culture observations with a lot of fire and devoid of pretense. He also was a fantastic leader of the outfit Burnt Sugar. 2. Robbie Shakespeare was one half of the single most recorded and broadly influential rhythm sections in pop music history. He, along with Sly Dunbar, played on literally thousands of recordings, with Grace jones, bill laswell, Joe cocker, Mick jagger, Peter tosh, madonna, Bob dylan, simply red, sting, tricky, no doubt...it's staggering. 3. The #BarryHarris image I actually published a few years back, as I was finally starting to get familiar with his contributions to jazz, including stuff he did with Yusef Lateef, and Cannonball Adderley, but his influence is far more extensive, and even though he was almost 92, his death by covid still seems quite tragic. #art #drawingpractice #gregtate #robbieshakespeare #barryharris. It’s been 20 years since Greg Tate founded Burnt Sugar, the wild-ass mini-orchestra that blasted off from its chief inspirations -- Sun Ra, P-Funk, electric Miles Davis – and burned its way toward a sweet spot. It’s where jazz meets soul meets hip-hop meets Afro-punk; where Duke Ellington and Bad Brains manage to find some common ground.
