Listen/purchase: Outside The Dream Syndicate by Tony Conrad
Tony Conrad was an American avant-garde composer, filmmaker, video artist, and instrumentalist born in 1940 and raised in Ohio. He went on to study mathematics and music at Harvard University. During the 1960s and 1970s, Conrad was active in the New York City art scene and collaborated with artists such as John Cale, La Monte Young, and Jack Smith. He passed away in 2016.
Conrad is best known for his work in minimalism and drone music and is considered a pioneer of the genre. He was also a prominent figure in the avant-garde film scene, creating several experimental films that explored representation, identity, and perception. Throughout his career, Conrad was committed to exploring the relationship between music and other forms of art, and his work is widely regarded as important and innovative. Despite his passing in 2016, his music and films remain widely influential and are considered essential for those interested in the history of avant-garde art.
"Outside the Dream Syndicate," released in 1973, features Conrad's solo violin playing and is characterized by its drone-like sound and repetitive phrases. The music is meant to be listened to as a single, continuous piece and is considered an important influence on the development of ambient, drone, and experimental music. The album was reissued in 2000 and continues to be widely regarded as a key work in the canon of experimental music.

Get it while it’s hot! Alan Licht’s 592-page interview compendium ‘Common Tones’ is new from @blankforms_ (and probably going to sell out fast)! For the past 30 years, Licht has been a performer, programmer and chronicler of NYC’s art and music scenes. His dry wit, deep erudition and unique perspective—informed by decades of experience as a touring and recording guitarist in the worlds of experimental music and underground rock—have distinguished him as the go-to writer for profiles of adventurous artists across genres. A precocious scholar and improvisor, by the time he graduated from Vassar College in 1990 Licht had already authored important articles on minimalist composers La Monte Young, Tony Conrad and Charlemagne Palestine, and recorded with luminaries such as Rashied Ali and Thurston Moore. In 1999 he became a regular contributor to @thewiremagazine while continuing to publish in periodicals ranging from the artworld glossies to underground fanzines. Common Tones gathers a selection of never-before-published interviews, many conducted during the writing of Licht’s groundbreaking profiles, alongside extended versions of his celebrated conversations with artists, previously untranscribed public exchanges and new dialogues. Even Lou Reed, a notoriously difficult interviewee, was impressed. Interviews with Vito Acconci, ANOHNI, Cory Arcangel, Matthew Barney, Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Tony Conrad, the Dream Syndicate’s Karl Precoda, Richard Foreman, Henry Flynt, Milford Graves, Adris Hoyos, Ken Jacobs, Jutta Koether, Christian Marclay, Phill Niblock, Alessandra Novaga, Tony Oursler, Lou Reed, Kelly Reichardt, The Sea and Cake, Suicide, Michael Snow, Greg Tate, Tom Verlaine, Rudy Wurlitzer and Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley & Ira Kaplan. @irvifran #alanlicht #commontones #michaelsnow @avantgroidd #tonyconrad #henryflynt @therealylt #karlprecoda @officialalanvega #christianmarclay @loureedofficial #tomverlaine @tonyoursler @theseaandcake #matthewbarney @arcangelsurfware #kenjacobs #juttakoether @anohni #richardforeman #glennbranca @rhysrhythmchatham #phillniblock #rudywurlitzer #kellyreichardt @alessandra_novaga #adrishoyos #milfordgraves https://www.instagram.com/p/CSMYJHVM1LP/?utm_medium=tumblr

via @bea.kwan.lim : “Hello my former place of work and an institute important in my fledgling life is in need of support to survive. La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's entire lifework and also the oeuvres of many other amazing artists and musicians like Pandit Pran Nath, Angus Maclise, Richard Maxfield, Terry Jennings, and more are housed in MELA Foundation at 275 Church Street in New York City. La Monte and Marian have been living in this building since the 60s and they are now in their 80s and in dire need of help to save their home and lifework. The entire record of their lives is in the Dream House. Please donate and/or share if you are able to. I will place a link in my profile too for a while https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/save-the-dream-house-keep-our-dream-alive “ #marianzazeela #lamonteyoung #thedreamhouse #angusmaclise #kiranagharana #richardmaxfield #terryjennings #panditprannath #theatreofeternalmusic #tonyconrad #americanminimalism https://www.instagram.com/p/CCaTN2WDc6w/?igshid=165qwee99htza

"When I first met Lou Reed a the beginning of 1965, he was a 22-year old songwriter at Pickwick Records in Long Island City, and I was a 22-year old avant-garde musician in La Monte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music. We were introduced by a Pickwick producer, Terry Phillips, who thought I was a pop musician because I had long hair. He asked me, Tony Conrad and a friend, the sculptor Walter de Maria, to form a band witht Lou called the Primitives. Phillips wanted to publicize a song had written and recorded in a back room and Pickwick has released as a single, 'The Ostrich', by a fictious band, the Primitives. The pop programme American Bandstand wanted them to perform this on on TV, so Phillips was forced to put out an appropriate-looking band together. We thought it would be fun, and as a lark spent a couple of weekends playing the TV show and a few other East Coast gigs. Even though the record bombed, the experience of being in a rock band, however ersatz, gave Lou and me the opportunity to connect." (John Cale)
