“This game is rigged, man” - The Wire S04E13
2 notes · View notes
Quote
A favorite phrase of David Simon’s is “You can’t make this shit up.” In the opening sequence of the very first episode of “The Wire,” Jimmy McNulty—the half mensch, half jerk of a Baltimore cop, played by the British actor Dominic West—is sitting on a stoop across from a crime scene. McNulty is talking to the compatriot of a dead guy called Snot Boogie, and can’t resist a little philosophizing on the subject of his name: “This kid, whose mama went to the trouble to christen him Omar Isaiah Betts—you know, he forgets his jacket, so his nose starts runnin’ and some asshole, instead of giving him a Kleenex, he calls him Snot. So he’s Snot forever. It doesn’t seem fair.” Snot Boogie liked to shoot craps with his pals in the neighborhood, it seems, but, every time he did, he’d steal the pot before the end of the game. So why, McNulty wants to know, did they still let him play? “Got to,” his interlocutor answers. “This is America, man.” It was a perfectly crafted setup for Simon’s themes: how inner-city life could be replete with both casual cruelty and unexpected comedy; how the police and the policed could, at moments, share the same jaundiced view of the world; how some dollar-store, off-brand version of American capitalism could trickle down, with melancholy effect, into the most forsaken corners of American society. But, as it happened, the Snot Boogie story was real—Simon had heard it, down to the line about America, from a police detective, and it appears in “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets.” Simon’s gift is in recognizing an anecdote like that for the found parable that it is—“stealing life,” as he once described it to me—and knowing which parts to steal.

FLORENCE CATS
Ys
Edições CN DL/MC
«The debut album from Belgian composer and artist Florence Cats opens with Sunken Cathedral, an intimate interpretation of Claude Debussy’s piano prelude La Cathédrale Engloutie.  As the opening notes leave the piano, it’s not the instrument’s reverberations nor Debussy’s allusive motifs that take the spotlight. Instead, attention is drawn to the rawness of the recording, the ambience of Cats’s room and the noises of her clothes. Through sections of gently ascending chords and stabs evocative of church bells, the composer and performer’s artistic voices exist on equal footing, one embracing the other. The brushing of fingers over piano keys, the resounding cluck of pedals, the rhythm of breathing and soft vocalisations become integral parts of the composition, woven into an understated lo-fi aesthetic that stands in juxtaposition with Debussy’s impressions of imposing spaces.
Cats’s penchant for absorbing moods and environmental noise into music is even more prominent on the remaining pieces. On Fall Call her DIY theremin responds to a passing thunderstorm by belching a sub-bass rumble that rises into the sound of a stuttering engine and jet-like sweeps. Then, a phone rings, perhaps on purpose.
Meanwhile, the closing Drop Out would be a pristine forest field recording, if not for Cats’s wistful, absent-minded humming that lands like a leaf among crackling trees and chirping birds to complete a sonically disparate but conceptually and emotionally resounding album.»

Ok so here's another blog detailing stuff I like. This one is about shows I like
My Favorite Shows: Blackstone (a extremely underrated Canadian series about the residents of a First Nations reserve), Glitch, Black Mirror and Oz (I can see where some people today can see some issues in regards to representation however I got sucked into the world and it's characters. Kareem and Tobias)
Other Shows I Really Like: Damages, 3%, The Wire and Big Love
Shows I Enjoyed and Or Liked: Sons Of Anarchy, Nip Tuck (it is quite dated though), Six Feet Under, Orphan Black, Skins, Misfits (although it has poor representation and treatment of the Black characters as well as LGBT characters oh and a Romani character pops up who is called the g slur and never corrects it), My Mad Fat Diary, Hell on Wheels (this show also has issues when it comes to representation, primarily with the Indigenous characters), Banshee (although questionable Indigenous representation and casting), Prison Break, Please Like Me, Cucumber, Banana, Outrageous Fortune, Redfern Now, The Gods of Wheat Street, Being Mary Jane, Luther, The Fall, Dark, Vis a Vis, Cable Girls and Snowfall
I have seen alot more shows then this though. If you asked me 5 years ago I would have said The Walking Dead, Falling Skies, The 100, Under The Dome and Z Nation
