The Foundations: Letters Patent of 1917
The framework for today’s royal titles was significantly shaped by the Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917.
This document was pivotal in redefining who in the royal family would be styled with “His or Her Royal Highness” (HRH) and as a prince or princess.
Specifically, the 1917 Letters Patent restricted these styles to:
The sons and daughters of a sovereign.
The male-line grandchildren of a sovereign.
The eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.
Extension by George VI in 1948
Understanding the implications of the existing rules as his family grew, King George VI issued a new Letters Patent in 1948 to extend the style of HRH and prince/princess to the children of the future queen, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II).
This was crucial as, without this adjustment, Princess Elizabeth’s children would not automatically have become princes or princesses because they were not male-line grandchildren of the monarch.
This ensured that Charles and Anne were born with princely status, despite being the female-line grandchildren of a monarch.
The Modern Adjustments: Queen Elizabeth II’s 2012 Update
Queen Elizabeth II’s update to the royal titles in 2012 before the birth of Prince William’s children was another significant modification.
The Letters Patent of 2012 decreed that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales would hold the title of HRH and be styled as prince or princess, not just the eldest son.
This move was in anticipation of changes brought about by the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013, which ended the system of male primogeniture, ensuring that the firstborn child of the Prince of Wales, regardless of gender, would be the direct heir to the throne. Impact on Current Royals
Children of Princess Anne: When Anne married Captain Mark Phillips in 1973, he was offered an earldom but declined it. Consequently, their children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, were not born with any titles. This decision reflects Princess Anne’s preference for her children to have a more private life, albeit still active within the royal fold.
Children of Prince Edward: Initially, Prince Edward’s children were styled as children of an earl, despite his being a son of the sovereign. When their grandfather became king, they became male-line grandchildren of a monarch and, hence, a prince and a princess. It took a while for those changes to be reflected on the royal family website. This presumably gave the royal household time to reflect on the effect of the children’s parents withdrawing from royal life and moving to the USA.
Special Titles: Prince of Wales and Princess Royal
Prince of Wales: Historically granted to the heir apparent, this title is not automatic and needs to be specifically bestowed by the monarch. Prince Charles was created Prince of Wales in 1958, though he had been the heir apparent since 1952. Prince William, on the other hand, received the title in 2022 – just a day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Princess Royal: This title is reserved for the sovereign’s eldest daughter but is not automatically reassigned when the previous holder passes away or when a new eldest daughter is born. Queen Elizabeth II was never Princess Royal because her aunt, Princess Mary, held the title during her lifetime. Princess Anne currently holds this title, having received it in 1987.
The Fade of Titles: Distant Royals
As the royal family branches out, descendants become too distanced from the throne, removing their entitlement to HRH and princely status.
For example, the Duke of Gloucester, Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra all have princely status as male-line grandchildren of George V.
Their children are all great-grandchildren of a monarch and, therefore, do not all have royal styles or titles.
This reflects a natural trimming of the royal family tree, focusing the monarchy’s public role on those directly in line for succession.
As Character & Literary Tropes
"Princess Classic" Trope - General traits: Female; actual royalty, by birth or marriage, or Adopted into Royalty; she is innocence personified.
"Honorary Princess" Trope - Some ladies are princesses because they were born to a king and queen. Others are because they're married to a prince. Or maybe a sovereign adopted them. And then there is this girl (no matter if she has a wealthy way of life or not), who is called a princess because… Well, the reasons vary. Maybe she's self-proclaimed. Maybe she gained a throne.
"Royal Blood" Trope - Only the person who's really got it is suitable for the throne.
"Adopted into Royalty" Trope - Conventionally, being a King, Queen, Prince or Princess requires you to be born as one, Royal Blood is valuable after all, and as far as most monarchs are concerned, they have to make sure their bloodline keeps going if they want their kingdoms to last. But when you're this character, it's another story. Maybe you got a father who was lucky enough to marry a queen, maybe you reported and helped stop a coup attempt and the royal family saw adopting you as a way of thanking you, maybe you're already of some position and are adopted into the family as political fodder, or maybe you just befriended a prince and he liked you enough that he came to his father and begged him (if not outright demanded) you get adopted into the royal family so you and he could spend more time together. However it happened, you're suddenly now at the top of the food chain of society.
"Rags to Royalty" Trope - Cinderella Style: A commoner by birth, or with only minor ties to nobility. Nonetheless, through hard work, perseverance, and the help of some musical animals, she'll swoop into the ball and make the prince her husband. Snow White Style: Legitimately royalty, but forced into hiding to escape those who plot against her or because she cannot act as she needs to as long as she is seen as royal. Usually part of a Fish out of Water plot as she tries to hide her royalty and fake being a commoner. May have to prove birthright with bizarre tests or special trinkets only the legitimate Princess would have. Sleeping Beauty Style: Like the Snow White, she's royalty and forced into hiding for protection. Unlike the Snow White, she has no idea she has a Secret Legacy and is actually royalty. The Hard Way: Becoming royalty by going through such intermediate stages as "mercenary", "field commander", "warlord" and finally "conqueror," and most likely marrying a princess along the way, either becoming the ruler of the kingdom or The High Queen's consort. It never appeared in fairy tales, but is very common in heroic epics. Naturally, this is a predominantly male path.
"The High Queen" Trope - A woman of wealth, power, and near-impossible beauty. She always has a calm demeanor and regal bearing. This is what the Princess Classic wants to be when they grow up.
"The Empress" Trope - The female counterpart of The Emperor, historically, they outranked Kings, so when you need an authority figure to convey the highest possible power and rank, you can't get any higher than making them The Emperor/Empress (unless you go to The Pope, or into the otherworldly realms). An Empress is likely to be depicted more sympathetically than an Emperor. Less sympathetic female rulers are more often queens.
"The Usurper" Trope - Someone who becomes a ruler by intentionally taking out their rivals (usually via underhanded and illegal means).

Happy 42nd birthday to Zara Tindall!
Born on May 15th 1981, Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall (née Phillips) is the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal, and Captain Mark Phillips, as well as a granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and a niece of King Charles III. Zara is currently 20th in the line of succession to the British throne.
Zara collected individual and team gold medals at the 2005 European Eventing Championship in Blenheim, and individual gold and team silver medals at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, making her the reigning Eventing World Champion until 2010. The same year after her win in Germany, she was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year by the British viewing public (an award her mother won in 1971). She was also appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2007 New Year Honours for her services to equestrianism.
On 11 June 2012, Tindall was announced as a member of the British Equestrian team for the 2012 London Olympic Games. She competed in the 2012 London Olympics and won a silver medal in the team event. Her mother, Princess Anne, presented her medal.
Zara married rugby union player Mike Tindall on 30 July 2011 at the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland. The couple has 3 children: Mia Grace (9), Lena Elizabeth (5) and Lucas Philip (2).

The Meander Tiara
With the immense collection of jewels the British Royal Family has amassed through the ages, it is no surprise that they have a meander tiara in their vaults.
The Meander Tiara was a wedding gift from HRH Princess Alice of Battenberg to the then Princess Elizabeth, the bride-elect of her only son Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, in 1947.

The word “meander” stems from the motifs found along the band of the tiara. A meander or meandros is a decorative Greek key border design; this makes the tiara fitting for a Battenberg princess who wed into the Greek Royal Family in 1903.
Princess Elizabeth never wore the jewel, as only 5 years into her marriage, she would ascend to the throne and thus meaning more grander pieces at her disposal. Princess Andrew’s tiara would then be regularly lent to her granddaughter, Princess Anne. The austere design of the tiara was quite befitting to the young, strong-minded princess.

HM The Queen would officially give the tiara to the Princess Royal in 1972, upon her engagement to Captain Mark Phillips.
The most notable outing of the tiara was on top of the head of Princess Anne’s daughter, the blooming bride Zara Phillips, during her 2011 wedding to Mike Tindall.

Emilia d’Erlanger first met Catherine at Marlborough College after Catherine changed schools when she was 14, where both girls were on the hockey team together. It is said that she hosted a house party attended by both William and Catherine when the now-royals were 17. Emilia joined Catherine on a trip to Ibiza during her 2007 break up from William. The Cambridges were at Emilia’s wedding in 2010 and Emilia was at the Cambridge’s wedding the following year. She is an interior designer and co-owns d’Erlanger and Sloan with Anna Sloan.

Hugh Grosvenor, known as Earl Grosvenor when he became godfather to Prince George, is only 29 and is believed to be the world’s richest person under 30. Hugh inherited his father’s titles after his father’s death in 2016; William and Catherine attended his funeral that year.

The truth about the Queen's relationship with Princess Anne - the trailblazing royal 'Daddy's Girl'

Having inherited her father’s no-nonsense approach to life, it is well known within royal circles that Princess Anne has never been one to suffer fools gladly - even if they are the leader of the free world. That might explain the footage that went viral on social media yesterday, seemingly showing the 69-year-old dodging a meeting with Donald Trump.
As the Queen greets the US President and his wife at Buckingham Palace, flanked by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, she spies her daughter lingering in the doorway and lifts a black glove to beckon her over. Princess Anne appears to respond with a shrug and stays exactly where she is.
An aide has explained the moment as “some mother/ daughter banter”, insisting that Her Majesty was “just encouraging the family and staff to come through” (others have suggested that a bemused Anne was telling her mother there were no remaining world leaders in line to greet). But Twitter users have interpreted it as a show of amused defiance and Anne has been praised for “not giving a s---” about shaking Trump’s hand. “She’s always been my favourite royal,” wrote one.
It’s a sentiment that seems to be spreading. the Princess has also unwittingly enjoyed a renaissance as one of the sassiest characters in the latest series of The Crown on Netflix – her straighforwardness, raised eyebrows and determination to live an independent life all endearing her to a new generation of admirers.
Always known as a “Daddy’s Girl”, the Duke of Edinburgh once famously remarked of his horse-mad only daughter: “If it doesn’t fart or eat hay, she isn’t interested.”

Having grown up in the shadow of her older brother and heir Prince Charles, Anne has won respect for not only carving out a successful career in equestrianism, but also as one of the hardest working members of the Firm. She carried out 518 royal engagements in 2018 and shows no sign of slowing down, even as she approaches her 70th birthday next August.
Her steely demeanour has long hidden a genuine passion for the compassionate care of others, be it through charities such as Save The Children, the Princess Royal Trust for Carers she set up in 1991, or her work in poverty-stricken African nations.
Indeed, such is the recognition of her trooper-like reputation behind palace doors that the Queen has allowed documentary makers to film the Princess Royal for a special programme due out next year - to mark not only her 70th birthday, but half a century of public service, which she began in 1970, aged 20.
It highlights an increasing intimacy between mother and daughter. The pair have already grown significantly closer since the Queen lost both her mother, the Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret, in swift succession in 2002.
“I was surprised she would cooperate with something like this [the documentary] but the Queen clearly thinks recognition is due for all her daughter’s hard work over the past 50 years,” says Joe Little, editor of Majesty magazine.
Royal author Phil Dampier believes Her Majesty will also hold a party to mark Anne’s auspicious birthday: “Last time, she had to share with Prince Andrew, who is exactly 10 years younger, but this time the Queen will throw a party just in her daughter’s honour. Although Anne wouldn’t want it, her mother will insist.”

It is perhaps worth noting that plans to mark Andrew’s 60th have reportedly been shelved, given the recent furore surrounding his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Both royal experts agree that the Duke of York’s fall from grace will have an impact not only on Anne’s workload, but her relationship with the 93-year-old monarch. According to Dampier, “Anne is much closer to the Queen than she used to be. She’s always been close to her father, because she’s very similar to him. His philosophy is just get on with it - and that’s just the way she is, too.”
As Kevin S. MacLeod, the Canadian Secretary to the Queen, has said of Anne: “Her credo is: “Keep me busy. I’m here to work. I’m here to do good things. I’m here to meet as many people as possible’.”
But there has always been more to Anne than her 300-plus string of patronages - not to mention the somewhat bizarre fascination with lighthouses that has seen her tick off almost every example on the British coast.
As the first member of the monarchy to compete in the Olympics, in 1976, she was arguably the trailblazer for royals breaking with tradition and living an independent life. In 1987 - the same year she was given the title of Princess Royal - she memorably became the first member of the family to appear as a contestant on a television quiz-show, when she competed on the BBC panel game A Question of Sport.
In 1974, she famously became the victim of a kidnapping attempt by a pistol-waving man named Ian Ball, who stopped her car on Pall Mall. When Ball demanded Anne get out of the limousine, she replied with characteristic gusto: “Not bloody likely!” and reportedly considered hitting him, before exiting out of the other side and being rushed to safety. She later told Michael Parkinson that she was “scrupulously polite” to her would-be abductor, as she thought it would be “silly to be too rude at that stage”.

But there have been moments of rudeness - most notably to the press, who Anne insists do not accompany her on any official engagements. Having gained a reputation for spikiness, she then courted all the wrong headlines when she had a fling with her royal protection officer, Sergeant Peter Cross, while still married to her first husband, Mark Phillips. Because the romance happened when Anne had two young children - Peter and Zara - it sent shockwaves around the palace. But there was some sympathy for the royal mother-of-two when Cross, who by then had left Scotland Yard, sold the sordid details to the News of the World in 1984, and when Phillips himself (whom she divorced in 1992) was later revealed to have fathered a love child.
Yet, since marrying her second husband, Tim Laurence, then a Commander in the Royal Navy, in December 1992 - Anne’s life has largely been blemish free.
So could the Queen’s increasing reliance on her only daughter - and the decision to remove Prince Andrew from the Firm’s front line - make the House of Windsor’s most industrious member even busier?
“She’s likely to become a much more important figure,” explains Phil Dampier. “Unlike her younger brother, she’s extremely discreet and not likely to make any faux pas. She’s a safe pair of hands.
“Thirty years ago she was seen as the black sheep. She got a bad press because she was quite rude to journalists. She had an affair and then came the break up of her marriage. But she has put it all behind her and is now one of the most reliable members of the family. She’s had her own scandals in the past but got through them, while it’s probably much too late for Andrew to do the same.”

One consideration for the Princess Royal is likely to be her relationship with her grandchildren - Savannah, 8 and Isla, 7, Peter’s children with his wife Autumn Kelly; and Zara and Mike Tindall’s daughter’s Mia, 5, and Lena, 1 - who all live on her Gatcombe estate.
A royal insider revealed: “They are an incredibly close family. I know the Princess has got a bit of a reputation as an ice maiden, but she absolutely dotes on her granddaughters. She works so hard that she doesn’t see them much during the week, but loves to spend her weekends with them. I wouldn’t imagine she’d want to sacrifice much more of that precious time together.”
Yet, Joe Little insists that Anne will remain a vital cog in the royal machinery, even though Prince Charles is reportedly planning to slim it down in the future.
“She’s in her 70th year but in remarkably good shape mentally and physically, so there is no sign of her slowing down,” he says. “Whether she can take on any of her brother’s workload remains to be seen, but Charles couldn’t not have her around. When they do see each other they get on like a house on fire, but they’re not in each other pockets. He trusts his sister implicitly.”
With her father, oldest brother and now her mother increasingly looking to her for support, one can’t help but think that Princess Anne could yet prop-up the Firm, as well as The Crown, for some time to come - whether she agrees to shake hands with world leaders, or not.

Proposal
The Royal Marriages Act of 1772 requires all royal descendants to seek the sovereign's approval for marriage. But the requirements don't stop there—the 1701 Act of Settlement prohibits royals from marrying Catholics. To wed the Queen's eldest grandchild Peter Phillips in 2008, Autumn Kelly converted from Roman Catholicism to Anglicanism so her husband would keep his place as 11th in line for the throne. Soon after Will and Kate's engagement was announced, officials from Buckingham Palace said the Queen was "absolutely delighted" for the couple, which can only mean she approved of Will's choice.
Stag and Hen Parties
What began as a dinner party in Ancient Sparta has evolved into a party thrown in honor of a bachelor's soon-to-be-lost single status. But in the UK, groomsmen have taken the tradition even farther, now celebrating over an entire weekend's worth of festivities known as a stag weekend. While details are scarce, Will's office confirmed that the Prince's party took place in late March (about a month before the wedding). Hosted by his brother, Prince Harry, at a country estate, the party included Will's close friends James Meade, Thomas van Straubenzee, and Guy Pelly. With the dawn of the sexual revolution in the 1960s, women claimed their own night of "farewell-to-singlehood" revelry. Kate's "hen night" (we call it a bachelorette party around here) was even more hush-hush than Will's. Her sister Pippa reportedly booked four different hotel locations to throw off paparazzi.
Wedding Location
The most traditional site for a royal ceremony is the Chapel Royal at St. James Palace, which housed the weddings of Queen Anne (1683), George III (1761), George IV (1795), Queen Victoria (1840), and George V (1893). More recent royal couples have since outgrown the small chapel, which seats 100, as the ceremonies have become more of a public spectacle. For her 1919 ceremony, Princess Patricia of Connaught brought Westminster Abbey (left) back into vogue for royal weddings for the first time in 605 years. Westminster was then chosen for King George V's daughter Mary in 1922, Queen Elizabeth's parents in 1923, and the Queen's own wedding in 1947. Kate and Will are Westminster-bound, as well, but two alternatives would have been the much larger St. Paul's Cathedral where Charles and Diana wed or the much smaller St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle where Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles's wedding was dedicated following a civil ceremony at Windsor's Guildhall in 2005.
Wedding Party
English brides are accompanied by a group of bridesmaids, usually younger girls between the ages of 10 and 12. The Queen had eight bridesmaids, and Diana had five, ranging in age from 5 to 17. Kate's bridal party will be even younger, with Grace van Cutsem (Will's goddaughter) and Eliza Lopes (Camilla's granddaughter) both toddling down the aisle at age 3. In a major break with tradition, Kate has chosen a maid of honor, her sister Pippa, who will be the oldest main bridesmaid in recent memory at the ancient age of 27. The Prince's godson, Tom Pettifer, and Billy Lowther-Pinkerton, the son of Will's Secretary, will serve as pageboys—young attendants who traditionally carry the train of the bride's dress.
Guests
At an event as exclusive as a royal wedding, the guest list is everything. Fellow royals, foreign leaders, church officials, and diplomats dot the list along with the couple's own friends and family. The Royal Family sits on the right-side of the church, unless the groom is not royal, in which case they sit on the left. By the Queen's command, 1,900 invitations went out to Will and Kate's wedding guests—including to their friends from St. Andrews University, but notably excluding Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. Male attendees are expected to wear military uniforms, morning dress (single-breasted coats with tails) or lounge suits (what we consider a business suit). Female attire is less specifically outlined, though hats are a must.
Transportation
Most royal brides arrive to their wedding in horse-drawn regal style (Diana's choice: the 1881 Glass Coach purchased for George V's coronation in 1911), but Kate will instead arrive at Westminster Abbey with her father in a car. And not just any car. She's selected the Queen's Rolls Royce Phantom for its large windows to allow onlookers the best view. Once they are married, Kate and Will plan to depart the ceremony in the same carriage that transported Charles and Diana, a 1902 State Landau originally made for the coronation of Edward VII. For Charles and Camilla's wedding, Will and Harry tied metallic balloons and the words "Just Married" to the back of the couple's Bentley. What are the chances bad-boy Harry will try the same on Will and Kate's carriage?
Bouquet
When Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, she carried myrtle—known as the herb of love—in her bouquet. After the wedding, Victoria planted a myrtle shrub in her garden at the Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Every British royal bride since has carried a bouquet containing a sprig plucked from the same shrub. In an act of love to honor the armed forces, Kate will leave her bouquet in Westminster Abbey at the grave of the Unknown Warrior, a tradition begun by the late Queen Mum.
Ceremony
English brides lead the processional down the aisle, with her bridesmaids in tow unescorted by ushers, who stand at the front of the church with the groom. The couple has selected the 32-person Choir of Westminster Abbey, the Chapel Royal Choir, the 39 musicians of the London Chamber orchestra, and the Central Band of the Royal Air Force to perform various selections, which royal officials say will include well-known hymns and choral works, as well as some specially-commissioned pieces. Some royal wedding staples have been Mendelssohn's Wedding March, the hymn The Lord's My Shepherd, and Widor's Toccata from Organ Symphony No. 5, which was the recessional music at Edward and Sophie's wedding. (Official recordings of Will and Kate's music will be available on iTunes May 5.) The ceremony itself will be divided between three officiants: the Dean of Westminster conducting the service, the Archbishop of Canterbury presiding over the vows, and the Bishop of London giving the address. Will and Kate will likely exchange traditional vows, with one possible exception: Back in 1999, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, caused an uproar for promising to "honour, cherish and obey" Prince Edward, a public relations nightmare the newest royal couple might want to avoid repeating.
Wedding Band
Beginning with the wedding of the Queen's late mother in 1923, all of the royal women's wedding bands have contained precious Welsh gold from the same nugget mined in Dolgellau, North Wales—a variety of gold that's three times more valuable than gold from Australia or South Africa. While the traditional nugget (similar to the one on the left) is almost depleted, the Queen has since been presented with another large nugget for subsequent weddings bands, including that of Sarah, Duchess of York and now Kate. Breaking with tradition, Will has decided not to wear a wedding ring. Even his father Charles wears a band in addition to his signet ring, but Will says he personally just isn't one for jewelry.
Reception
Most British weddings are held at noon and are followed by a seated luncheon called a "wedding breakfast" (a brunch, basically). The Queen's luncheon was held in the Ball supper-room at Buckingham Palace for a small party, as was Diana's for about 120 guests. Following Will and Kate's 11am ceremony, 600 guests will join the new couple at the Palace for a buffet-style wedding breakfast hosted by the Queen (the canapé menu is to be created by Chef Mark Flanagan, left). The reception will also include two cakes: one fruit (the traditional royal wedding choice) and one chocolate (at the request of Will). At 1:30pm, the couple will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony to share a public kiss, a tradition begun by Charles and Diana. Usually, the royal couple then jets off to a honeymoon destination, but Kate and Will plan to stick around for a private dinner and night of dancing at the Palace hosted by the Prince of Wales.
Royal Titles
With a few exceptions, women who marry royal male successors assume their husbands' titles: The Duke and Duchess of York, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, etc. The most notable exception is, of course, Camilla, who adopted the title Duchess of Cornwall instead of the Princess of Wales out of respect for Diana. If Prince Charles becomes King, Camilla will be the Princess Consort, not Queen Camilla. Will and Kate's titles haven't yet been announced, but the most likely contenders are: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Duke and Duchess of Connaught, and Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
