Alan Wallwork, who has died aged 88 (in 2019), was one of Britain’s most distinctive potters known for sculptural work that was important in the story of studio ceramics, but who should also be judged in the context of the broader artistic developments in the country in the 1950s and 60s.
For Alan, clay was the ideal expressive medium for organic and preternatural objects that explored forms in nature and the landscape, such as gourds, seeds and fossils, as well as archaic and totemic shapes from early human history.
He developed an archetypal language that echoed some of the wider artistic obsessions of that period, what the art critic Herbert Read called the “postwar ferment” of sculptural activity. Sculptors such as William Turnbull, Eduardo Paolozzi and Hubert Dalwood explored related territories of biomorphism, and painters including Alan Reynolds and Edward Middleditch were drawn to organic subjects, to the scrubby peripheries of fields and roads burgeoning with cow parsley, or scattered with poppy seed pods and teasels. This was Wallwork country, too.
Alan was part of a postwar shift in clay that went beyond functional domestic pieces. This experimentation centred largely on London art colleges such as the Central School and Goldsmiths College, where Alan went in 1955, studying under Kenneth Clark and Gordon Baldwin, both avant-garde potters who opened up new aesthetic and technical possibilities.

On February 27th 1545  The Battle of Ancrum Moor took place in the Scottish Borders.
Fought during The Rough Wooing, Archibald Douglas and Scott of Buccleuch, in retaliation for the burning of Melrose Abbey, Jedburgh and Hawick, routed a larger English army under Sir Ralph Evers and Sir Brian Latoun, leaving them both dead. The Scots leaders were Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus; the Earl of Arran; Norman Leslie, Master of Rothes; Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch, and Homes and Gordons from the Merse. The Scots set an ambush in a marshy area, covering up and filling pits along the old Roman road, which was the easiest access point for the English. The Scots attack came as a surprise, supported by the setting Sun behind them and a wind blowing gunpowder smoke towards the enemy. Some Border soldiers (including Hawick families such as Croziers, Olivers, Halls, Turnbulls, Armstrongs and other ‘broken clans’), originally on the side of the English, stripped off their red crosses and crossed to join the Scots mid battle. It is estimated that over six hundred English were slain and a thousand prisoners were taken. The Maiden Lilliard of Maxton supposedly saw her lover killed at Ancrum Moor and waded in to avenge him, being killed in the process. This story has since proven fanciful, as the area was long known as Lilliard's Cross beforehand. The nearby farm of Lillaird's Edge is named in her honour. "Fair maiden Lilliard lies under this stane Little was her stature but great was her fame Upon English loons she laid many thumps When her legs were cut off she fought on her stumps"

"STRIKERS TO GO TO VILLE MARIE JAIL BY PLANES," Montreal Gazette. December 13, 1933. Page 1. --- Seventy-six Men Will Be Transported by Air --- FACE SERIOUS CHARGES ---- Rouyn Cells Overcrowded and Further Trouble Feared in Mining Town ---- (By The Canadian Press.) Rouyn, Que., December 12. - Seventy-six striking lumbermen tomorrow will fly 90 miles to Ville Marle, Que., jail, on the shore of Lake Temiskaming, to await preliminary hearing on charges of failing to disperse after reading of the Riot Act and of abetting an unlawful assembly.
Over a stretch of wind-swept northern Quebec between this mining town and Ville Marie, the bushmen will be conveyed by groups of five in two General Airways air- planes. They will be under guard of pilots Clarke and Jellison who have been sworn in as special constables for the occasion.
On arrival at Ville Marie, opposite Haileybury, Ont., on the east shore of lake Temiskaming, the men will be met by police guards and escorted to the recently built jail there. It is believed the first time transportation by air of such a large number of prisoners has been undertaken in Canada. The decision was taken by authorities to afford police adequate facilities here in event of further trouble in the lumber camp. Arrest of more than 80 turbulent lumbermen has taxed to the utmost the facilities of the combined Rouyn jail, police headquarters and town hall.
SEVENTY-SIX IN COURT. Seventy six striking lumber workers were arraigned today be fore J. O. Tardif, Justice of the Peace, on charges of failing to disperse after reading of the Riot Act and of abetting an unlawful assembly. They were remanded to jail for preliminary hearing scheduled to take place at Ville Marie, Que., on December 21.
Miss Jeanne Corbin, Timmins, Ont., school teacher, was remanded to Noranda, Que., jail on a similar charge after she failed to supply bail of $1,000 cash. Preliminary hearing was set for December 20. She is considered by police to be one of the leaders of the labor discontent which seethed through Clerion district lumber comps about two weeks ago and was climaxed here yesterday by a clash between police and picketing lumber workers. Miss Corbin was at first believed to be Bella Gordon, prominent Montreal labor worker.
Six men, members of the executive of the Temiskaming and Abitibi Bush Workers' Federation were remanded to Rouyn jail until December 21 when preliminary hearing will be granted. They appeared on the same charges facing the bulk of strikers.
No further disturbances occurred today. Police officials were taxed to the utmost in preventing dis- order as there is no room for the majority of men arrested in the few jail cells here and the overflow have been placed under police guard in the council chamber of the town hall.
Staff-Sergeant Turnbull, of the Quebec provincial police, gave evidence today as the men were arraigned before Mr. Tardif. They were arrested yesterday after police ordered cessation of picketing along the Rouyn-Clerion road. The men refused and following reading of the Riot Act they clashed with police.
Trouble began more than two weeks ago when labor unrest forced the International Pulp & Paper Company to close its Clerion district lumber camps. The workless men then trekked into this northern Quebec mining town, made known their grievances and settled down to await developments. Last week the company announced intention of reopening the camps and re-engaging the men at the same conditions as previously. The strikers then began picketing the Clerion-Rouyn road and the clash with police ensued.

Celtic Clinch 3rd Straight Title -먹튀검증Premier League
A goal from Jan 먹튀검증 was enough to give Celtic a 1-0 at Dundee United last night to clinch their 3rd straight Scottish Premier League title and their 42nd in the club`s long and illustious history.
Ranger`s who were Celtic`s only challengers lost to Aberdeen 2-0 to end their hopes of a title in what proved to be a game to far for the men from Ibrox.
Though no one questions Celtic deserved the title success the Scottish F.A. did not help Ranger`s in their efforts forcing them to play 3 league games in 6 days after losing the UEFA Cup final last Wednesday.
Walter Smith now has the task of rallying his troops for one final effort in the Scottish Cup Final this weekend against First Division Queen of the South.
In the mean time Gordon Strachan can enjoy yet another title made sweeter for the fact that Rangers for so long were considered favourites, however Strachan`s team showed all the qualities the great man showed as a player to keep the pressure on and finally come out winners.
Athletics - Paula Radcliffe Olympic Injury Scare.
The chances of Paula Radcliffe competing in this Summers Olympic games in China were dealt a blow when the 34 year old was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the leg.
Paula who famously failed to complete the marathon course at the Athens Olympics in 2004 after completing 23 miles was one of Britains few realistic chances of a medal in the Athletics is optimistic she can still compete but doctors however are less convinced.
Hopefully she can prove the medics wrong as chances to compete at the games are running out for her.
Boro`s Schwarzer finds new home at the Cottage
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has paid tribute to long-serving goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who has decided to leave the club to join Fulham this summer. The 35-year-old Australian had been with Boro for more than a decade, racking up nearly 450 appearances in all competitions for the Teessiders.
However, he has opted against extending his stay with Boro to head to Craven Cottage.
Southgate told the club's official website: "I felt it would have been good to have retained Mark's experience, because he was always a good example for younger players.
"With that in mind we made him a fair offer, but he decided to take up a different offer and move on. "I enjoyed playing alongside and managing Mark because he was always an outstanding professional. "He was a very consistent goalkeeper for us for more than 11 years, so he deserves great credit for that, though the club has looked after him too.
"I have wanted to see what Bradley Jones and Ross Turnbull are capable of and they will now get the opportunity to show me. "They will come back for pre-season training on an equal footing with the first-choice goalkeeper's shirt up for grabs. It's up to them to take that opportunity."

Today I’m taking in part in This Week in Books, which was started by Lipsyy Lost and Found! If you want to join in you just need to share what you’re reading now, what you’ve read over the last week, and what you hope to read next.
  Now
All The Little Lies by Chris Curran
I’ve read and enjoyed previous novels by Chris Curran so I was excited to read this one and I’m so pleased to say that I’m really enjoying it.
Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow
I’ve had the audio book of this for a while and discovered the ebook on Kindle Unlimited so I’m part-reading and part-listening to this one. It’s such an interesting book, I’m really glad I picked it up.
I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella
I love Sophie Kinsella’s writing so I was delighted to be picked to read this one on Pigeonhole. It’s such a fun read but I’m struggling to read on a phone screen so may have to put this down until I buy a print copy.
The Innocent Man by John Grisham
I haven’t read much of this over the last week but I am still keen to learn more about these cases and will be getting back to this one in the coming week.
  Then
Trauma: From Lockerbie to 7/7: How Trauma Affects Our Minds And How We Fight Back by Gordon Turnbull
This book was such a fascinating read and I very much enjoyed it. It’s basically a history of PTSD and a really in-depth look at the condition. I’ve suffered with PTSD for years so was keen to read this, and I learnt so much. It’s a really accessible book so I’d recommend it to anyone who’s interested in the subject.
Gone by Midnight by Candice Fox
This book was really good. I particularly loved the two main characters and am definitely going to be looking out for the earlier books in this series so I can learn more about them. I will be reviewing this one soon.
The Jigsaw Man by Paul Britton
This book got recommended to me and I bought it right away and have been reading it for most of the last week. It’s a look at how a psychologist came to help solve some of the biggest crimes in the UK over the last thirty or so years. It was uncomfortable reading at times, especially reading about Colin Stagg and how he came to be charged with killing Rachel Nickell when he was innocent. Overall, it’s a really interesting look at forensic psychology.
Birthday Girl by Haruki Murakami
My husband bought me this for my birthday last week and I loved reading it. It’s a delightful short story that really leaves you thinking by the end. I think this will be a story that I re-read in the future.
Spare Room by Dreda Say Mitchell
I read this in one sitting, it grabbed me from the prologue and kept me hooked all the way through. I’ve already reviewed this so you can find my full thoughts here if you’d like to know more.
  Next
Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce
I’ve been so eager to read this one and it feels like it’s finally close enough to publication that I can pick it up. I’m planning to start it on a quiet afternoon as I feel like it’s going to be difficult to put this one down once I start reading!
My Last Lie by Ella Drummond
This is another book I’ve been looking forward to and as I’m now on the blog tour later this month I’m hoping to pick it up this week.
The Bridal Party by J. G. Murray
This book sounds so good, and another one that I think will be hard to put down so I’m looking forward to getting lost in this one!
What have you been reading this week? I’d love to hear. And if you take part in This Week in Books or WWW Wednesday please feel free to leave your link below and I’ll make sure to visit and comment on your post. 🙂
This Week in Books (6 Feb 2019)! What are you reading this week? Today I’m taking in part in This Week in Books, which was started by Lipsyy Lost and Found…

4/3/2019: Detroit takes series against New York
When a team like Detroit starts off the season splitting the first series and winning the second, it’s the cause of a nice celebration. Matthew Boyd sets a new career high in strikeouts in a game with 13 and Detroit squeezes a win out of the New York Yankees to secure the win over the series with a 2-1 victory. Boyd was left with a no-decision as Detroit took the lead in the 8th inning after Gordon Beckham crushed a solo home run to right field. The pitcher on record was Buck Farmer. The bullpen continued to shine, as they combined for 2.1 innings and allowed only one base runner, a walk from Joe Jimenez in the 8th inning. They also combined for 5 strikeouts, bringing the total for Detroit to an otherworldly 18. The bats were once again quiet in this matchup, with Detroit only able to muster 3 base hits. They did however draw 3 walks, had timely hitting, and a dash of luck to score the runs they needed for the win. Detroit scored their first run on a Christin Stewart sac-fly with the bases loaded and one out to bring Nicholas Castellanos home. After a strong throw from Aaron Judge in right field, Castellanos was able to avoid the tag and make it safe. Boyd’s lone run on the day was allowed in the third inning when DJ LeMahieu hit a one-out double, with Judge singling him in the following at-bat. Boyd was able to limit the damage to that run alone when Aaron Judge was hit by a ball in play while advancing the bases three batters later. Detroit (4-3) comes home for their Opening Day against the Kansas City Royals (2-3) and currently sit in second place in the AL Central, trailing only the Minnesota Twins (4-1). Spencer Turnbull (0-1, 5.40 ERA) takes the mound against Kansas City’s Jakob Junis (1-0, 4.76) at 1:10 PM.

March 17th 1979 saw a collapse in the Penmanshiel Tunnel near Grantshouse  Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders.
Forty four years ago, two railway workers sadly lost their lives when a tunnel being upgraded on the East Coast Main line collapsed.
At the time of the accident, work was in hand to increase the effective headroom by lowering the floor of the tunnel. The work on part of the track had been completed and it had been reopened for single line traffic while a party of contractors' employees were engaged in tidying up the newly-excavated floor preparatory to the relaying of the other track when the roof of the tunnel collapsed over a length of some 20 metres, allowing a quantity of broken rock, estimated at over 2000 tonnes, to pour into the tunnel, blocking it completely.
Of the men at work in the tunnel, 13 made good their escape but 2 were overwhelmed by the fall of rock and lost their lives, despite urgent and determined efforts at their rescue and recovery, including the attendance of a Mines Rescue team.
Later it was determined that it would be too dangerous and difficult to rebuild the tunnel, so it was sealed up the men still remain buried there.
Afterwards a new alignment was made for the railway, in a cutting to the west of the hill.
Fortunately, no train was in or closely approaching the tunnel at the time of the collapse or it could have been much worse.
As the collapsed portion of the tunnel was never excavated, the site became the final resting place of both workers who were killed in the collapse; Gordon Turnbull from Gordon, 22 miles away, and Peter Fowler from Eyemouth. A three-sided obelisk was erected over the point where the tunnel collapsed to act as a memorial. One face of the obelisk displays a cross, while each of the other two faces commemorates one of the men killed.

When It Comes To Firsts
As I celebrate my club otherwise known as the famous Glasgow Celtic winning a historic quadruple domestic treble and setting a world record unlikely ever to be equalled let alone surpassed I couldn’t help but think that certain pundits and commentators really didn’t want us to win this afternoon. All through the commentary I couldn’t help but notice just how many of them had quite miraculously…
