What books you like? Favorites, genres
I got into reading is little by fantasy books but I was also obsessed with new knowledge so I borrowed out a whole shelf of encyclopedias in local library too.
Later on, I was keen on mysteries and thrillers and horrors for many many years, basically into adulthood.
Ever since I started university I mostly only read local authors, classics, older literature. But in my free time, I like to relax with good detective stories, feuilletons, politics satire.
My guilty pleasures are Agatha Christie in any form or way, Jon Jonasson, all of ancient plays and colections of poems (you name it, I read it), Rudolf Křesťan, Franz Kafka. Out of classics that you can find in english and might know better than any Czech authors i could list here, i'd say Austen, Wilde, Poe, Atwood, Orwell, Fitzgerald. I also unironically love Shakespeare and Molière.
If I always hated something, it was romance (besides Austen, but that's mostly because of the characterization and a long time gone crush on another lit major). I also don't really enjoy the mainstream stuff that came out fairly recently. I didn't enjoy Rupi Kaur or Amanda Lovelace, I couldn't get past few pages of Coleen Hoover or Jojo Moyes I found in my sister's room.
Out of the new-ish authors I enjoyed, from top of my head: Nadia Terranova, Jonas Jonasson, Josh Malerman, John Grisham, Paula Hawkins, Harriet Tyce, Sophie Hannah....

4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Thanks! :D
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?: I wouldn't say "love" because I've only read one of her books, but I enjoyed The Lies You Told by Harriet Tyce and I'm looking out for her other book.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?: John Macnab by John Buchan. I'd never heard of it before and the plot summary didn't sound very interesting, but I gave it a chance anyway and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

I had a great time at the weekend at the Bath Festival helping out with a few literary events. 📚📚📚⠀ The first was featured Stacey Halls author of The Familiars and Elizabeth MacNeal author of The Doll Factory discussing their debut novels and writing historical fiction. It was fascinating to hear all about their writing processes, inspirations, and advice. Their discussion was really inspiring and has made me even more excited to read both of these! ⠀ 😍⠀ The second event was 'Bloody Women' which featured three crime writers discussing the genre and gender. It featured Harriet Tyce, a former criminal barrister whose debut novel Blood Orange has recently been released. Then Erin Kelly who has been on the scene for a while, and was behind BroadChurch. Lastly, Sarah Hilary, award-winning and effortlessly chaired the event. ⠀ 👏⠀ I admit I've not read much crime fiction before, mainly because I'm not so good with scary stuff and I don't want my adrenaline going too much before I try and go to sleep. However, after this event, my perception of the genre has totally changed and I'd like to try one or two from these lovely women, such as He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly.
