I saw a lot of this style in Palm Springs, which is pretty much the epicenter of the universe for mid-century styles. There's a lot of crossover between Googie style and classic MCM style (which has similar lines, just lacks the sort of astro-boy aesthetic). There's also a ton of crossover between MCM, Googie and Tiki styles. There is a whole-ass Tiki hotel in Palm Springs, and when I was there they were having a convention for Tiki fans. Several of them were on the architecture tour I took. I swung by that hotel (it's a motel-style hotel, with doors opening to the exterior) and all the Tiki fans were getting set up. Apparently they all set up their own tiki bars in their rooms and the convention is one big bar crawl, going from to room to room and sampling everyone's custom cocktails and snacks. I saw a couple of guys putting up brown paper all over the outside of their room for their Tatooine-themed tiki bar (you can see it in the fourth picture below).
It was exactly like every nerd convention I've ever been to. I was delighted.

No, Google Docs, there is a distinct difference between "cussing" and "cursing."

The Country Music Hall of Fame was a lot of fun -- actually more than I expected it to be, and I say that as someone who actually enjoys the bulk of country music. The museum is very well-designed and has a nice variety of exhibits. But the real hidden gem is the Hatch Show Print tour, which is an add-on tour with the Hall of Fame.
Hatch Show Print was a small print shop in Nashville that started out doing ads and handbills and ended up doing the poster art for a ton of artists who came through Nashville particularly in the early 20th century. Their style is what I think of as Great Depression Googie, very simple and retro, and I love it. And the tour itself is awesome, it's basically a little printmaking class with a history lesson thrown in. Hugely good time, do recommend.
[ID: two photos; the first is of the Hatch Show Print gift shop, which is crammed with posters announcing things like "Free Beer (tomorrow)" and "Y'all Means All". There are also several hand operated antique letterpress machines. The second photo is a close up of a machine in the "classroom" where they tell you about the history of the shop and let you do a print of your own; it has a sign on it reading "I am the oldest press in the shop". Not mentioned is that it was made in Chicago and I was oddly proud of that.]

hey! i was just curious if i could use your art in an artist study? i looked over your faq and i didn't see any mention of it so i just wanted to ask. it's okay if the answer is now, no pressure :)
( ꈍᴗꈍ) sure, if you credit me! i would be incredibly flattered!!
now that being said, i would also like to share with you some artists whose work i've enjoyed doing studies of! i find it's very useful to "follow the money" with artists you like, and go along the chain of inspiration to see how ideas and styles can change from person to person.
vincent van gogh is my BIGGEST inspiration in terms of color and composition! his unique style of brush work is what he's best known for, but i recommend looking at his works holistically too, and seeing where the eye is led and how he plays with light, color, and mood. if you want to go further, he was very inspired not only by prior impressionists, but also by japanese ukiyo-e artwork— try comparing "starry night" to "great wave off kanagawa" and seeing the similarities in the grand, sweeping movements they convey.
i'm sure i've said this a million times, but genndy tartakovsky has probably my favorite cartoonist style. it's at its peak in samurai jack— opinions are mixed about the narrative quality of season 5, but if nothing else, the art direction is absolutely jawdropping. one of my favorite scenes is the bit in the tomb, where jack is hiding in a sarcophagus, because the music and visuals are paying homage to a scene at the climax of "the good the bad and the ugly"!
in a totally different direction from those two... i'm a huge fan of gil elvgren's pinup girls! i've had a few different pinup calendars over the years, and at the end of the year, i like to cut up the pages individually for mini posters— i've covered pretty much all my available wall space in his illustrations. i love it when artists don't feel the need to sacrifice expressiveness for realism; his girls are SO DARN CUTE and they all look like they're having so much whimsical, cartoonish, flirty fun!
here's a post where i talk about more inspirations!
here's a post listing some other tumblr artists i like!
i'm also just very heavily inspired by 50s-60s print illustration... things like advertisements, "clip art" (which you had to physically clip out of a book and paste onto the page), and of course, tv cartoons. one big trend i love with that "googie" art style is how incredibly limited the palettes were, and how efficient the economy of line was. as much as i love the bold, blocky, dynamic shapes of styles like tartakovsky, who takes insp
also, please remember i'm entirely self taught and am NOT an expert, so just be aware of that if you see any weird stylistic choices in my work... i admire the work of a lot of professionally trained artists, but that doesn't mean i have any training or real right to go around teaching people stuff. i'm just some guy from a big crazy family full of artists, only some of whom went to school for it.
okay, that got way longer than i meant it to, SORRY! here's a pic of my cat Carmen as a thanks for reading this far ^_^

To be fair the names are similar enough that I got confused until I got a little too into playing Sims
Art Nouveau is kind of like if Rococo was more fluid - still botanical, but less fiddly, and I think this was when ombre kinda took off
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rococo: fancy as shit 18th century continental European/wealthy mad romance author's bedroom aesthetic, generally with Chinese and neo-classical influences - it's quite floral/botanical and pastel
Art deco: elegant industrial 1920s aesthetic, with highly stylised ornamentation and lots of metal and chrome
the point is i dont know what any of those means

WACKY POMO
(Short for Wacky Postmodern) - That 'wacky kidz' marketing aesthetic prominent from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, an amalgam of exaggerated, askew forms & motifs pulled from Googie, Deconstructivism, Pacific Punk Wave, Memphis Milano, 1940s-60s comics, cartoons & kids marketing, Willy Wonka-esque Victorian whimsical eccentricism (including 'Mad Scientist tropes), cartoonified industrial vernacular, and light gross-out kids' humor (goo, ooze). Typically bright, loud, acid-toned colors similar to the 'Cyber/Gen-X Corporate' style. Sometimes other contemporaneous aesthetics like Multiplex Deco or Cyber Gen-X Corporate are incorporated, albeit with a cartoon-ified touch. 'Hypnosis spirals' are a common motif, interesting considering the demographic & controversy around children's marketing during that era.

While not architecture in the usual sense, the famous Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a well known symbol of the Googie style.

Notes about the finale of Mentopolis:
It's so good. It's soo damn good. just great.
I think this is one of the most fulfilling seasons. It wraps up so well. The finale has some big moments, the players take big swings and Brennan is his classic self, delivering the thoughtful and funny narration and commentary we all expect and adore. The worldbuilding this season is very interesting and so well done (and I still think it's more Osmosis Jones than Inside Out); the set design and dome projections are next level. This has instantly become one of my favourite seasons. Brennan's fact about diners originating from dining cars is one of my personal favourites—that style would go on to become the Googie architectural and design style, probably most famously found in the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.)
I love how much Freddie enjoys being at the table. He really has a fun time. It's evident in Dungeons & Daddies and D&D Chaos too and I'm glad to see him having so much fun. Exploding twice was an amazing moment and really helped make it feel like a finale where the stakes are high. The fact he managed to succeed felt earned. His commitment to his character's vaguely Laszlo Cravensworth voice was so wonderful.
Siobhan is so incredible. She's so funny. She's been killing it with this unhinged impulsive (sorta Rowan Berry-esque) character and she's looked amazing all season long. Everything she does is iconic.
Alex's play style is really sorta chill and subdued. Not that they don't make big moves but it all seems somehow understated in their performance. Also 57 being their favourite number because of Heinz was so funny and they really wrecked everyone with that one.
I loved Hank as The Fix. He was such a sensitive tough guy and he dropped some very wonderful nuggets of wisdom. I'm so happy he got to be on D20 and I'm even happier his cancer is in remission. I know he was nervous because while he spends a lot of time talking this is a different medium and he isn't an improv actor or pro ttrpg player. But he does very well. The fish monologue at the end was bad ass. His line when Pasha N. comes and he can't think of any facts is flawless.
Danielle had her big moment last episode but she has really knocked it outta the park all season. I didn't know her before Misfits & Magic and she continues to be impressive.
Trapp was so funny all the time. Whether he was doing his own bits or just tacking on a stinger to the end of other players' bits, he was a master at humour. Hunch was such a good character. I love a gumshoe and he really falls into the classic film noir trope of a detective who basically tumbles through a mystery getting beat up and having misfortune befall him. His joke about foot stuff at the end is such a good call back.

In March 2022, Anaheim City officials shut down the Covered Wagon Motel because of “inhumane” and “deplorable” conditions. Some reported concerns involved human trafficking, prostitution, illegal drug use, and criminality. The city also cited safety violations including, open electrical wiring, water leaks, sewage problems, no smoke detectors, mold, filth, and squalor.
The Covered Wagon opened in 1961 as the Bahia Motel, a Polynesian and Googie-style lodging site. It is pictured here in the 1960s, 2000 and 2022.
