another big stowaway goldfish popped up at my job FUUUUUUCK!! this time from us harvesting all the fish. its safe for now in a sorting tank with some sunfish and another mystery carp. i know its technically no more special than the other fish but i dont wanna feed it to a bass 💔 i wish i had a pond so i could yoink all the stowaways SO BAD!!!!!!

Painted Anthias [or Painted Goldies] are very temperamental fish. They can grow up to 15cm long [6 inches] and are part of the family Serranidae, like groupers and sea basses.

They eat plankton and can be found in reefs worldwide. They live in groups called harems, with one dominant male, up to two subdominant males and two to twelve females.

Like clownfish, if there is no male around, the largest female will become one.

Came across a paper on domestic goldfish that showed the same thing I've been saying this whole time - these short bodied breeds have been bred to extremes, causing disfigurements that impair them. This study (Le Verger et al, 2024) showed reductions in brain size, modification of weberian ossicles (used for hearing in otophysan fishes), and reductions of the swim bladder (including near or complete loss of the posterior chamber in some breeds). But it also had citations I want to go back and read about things like lack of space for organs, propencity for infections, and loss of vertebrae.

I'll have to read up and do a longer writeup with full citations sometime, after things settle down. If I remember. ^^;;

Anyways, in the mean time:

Science agrees - "fancy" shortbodied goldfish breeds push their morphology to extremes at the expense of their health and ability to behave naturally.

favourite salmonid- ok this is hard bc they keep making bangers, ive always loved goldies tho!! but horrorboros.... hes so cool

favourite grizzco weapon- ROLLER ALL THE WAY!! im a flingza main so i love heavy(ish) rollers and this one is SO FAST!! SO POWERFUL!! i love running around like an absolute maniac, its literally the perfect weapon. just dont vertical fling ever

favourite night mode- it used to be goldie hunting, but now that they have tornadoes? i love that one its always a fun time for me. mudmouth comes close to, especially if someone has explosher/gslosher
