“But to the BatFam? That is just Some Guy. A random dude - if you will.”

“Don’t worry about it, I’m missing my spleen.”

“Oh cool, yeah, missing organs suck. I’m missing a kidney and part of my liver. Oh! And my gallbladder but that was more of a necessary evil, it was like, poisoning me or something.” Danny was so focused on applying pressure to his wound (and maybe being a bit too light headed) that he didn’t notice how silent his friend had gotten. Like-wise the comms had gone equally quiet as Gotham’s vigilante family realized that they knew very little about this kid.

It was concerning how quickly they all started to see him as a friend considering it was them as vigilantes he interacted with the most. Tim was the only one who saw him frequently when out of the suit because he was a regular at Danny’s day job. (He worked as a barista in the coffee shop Tim favored.) The others saw him occasionally but more often than not it was just in passing. Steph, Duke, and Dick had to stop themselves from approaching him on the street.

It was odd, one day he had just moved to Gotham, seeming to appear out of nowhere, and then the next he was a constant presence in their lives. Usually armed and ready with a concerning or odd quip, it had started with him being another victim of the city’s petty criminals and had snowballed from there.

Now it wasn’t like the bats saw Danny everyday, but it was expected that he would cross paths with at least three of them before the end of the week. They ran into him more often than any other Gothamite, including the criminals and rouges they fought.

At first the constant meetings by “coincidence” was suspicious. If he wasn’t the one being saved from a mugging, kidnapping, or city wide villain assault, then he was near by and trying to help.

(“Trying to help” usually meant drawing attention to himself so the original victim could escape. Once it had meant Danny armed with a baseball bat against four grown men. Bruce and Dick have tried to talk to him about putting himself in harms way but the kid is surprisingly elusive when he wants to be. Yet, even when avoiding Batman and his eldest, Danny could be found on the patrol route of another family member.)

But honestly? The guy seemed just as exhausted as they were of seeing each other. By the twelfth time in a month, Danny had accused them of stalking him.

The background check Bruce and Tim had run came back clean and he never seemed to be involved in the various criminal activities. He was just there, a weirdly unlucky bystander. So as far as Dick and the others could see, Danny was a completely normal dude. He just said strange things and wasn’t intimidated by them, he actually made it a point to be unhelpful sometimes. When trying to learn his name he gave them the run around for two months. (“I know about stranger danger. I don’t care how often you say you’re the ‘good guys.’ I’m not falling for it.”)

On one memorable occasion Danny had disappeared for a week and a half. When they started to assume the worse, he popped back up behind the counter at work. Tim had relaxed significantly when he entered the shop to Danny organizing pastries in the display case. Once he’d placed his order, the young CEO asked Danny if he’d been on vacation. To which Danny had just sighed and told Tim “I wish, but no I was called to court to handle some affairs I couldn’t get out of.” (After a check to see if Danny had gotten charged with something and coming back empty, Tim had concluded that it was an odd way to say he had had jury duty.)

Thinking about it now, outside a stray comment or two, Danny didn’t talk about himself or his life. They knew he didn’t have a good relationship with his parents, “they were much more goal oriented than that joke of a kidnapper, but I think drugs do that to a person.” (It was still unclear if he meant his parents were kidnappers themselves or on drugs.) They knew he had an older sister who would “kill me again if she finds out I was in another bank robbery.” They also knew he was, possibly, depressed after last week’s comment of “is it considered murder if you’re already dead but, like, still alive?” (Damian had saved him from a drug ring but after another “baby ninja” comment the young Robin had threatened to give Danny back to his would-be murderers.)

Dick knew Danny was a weird guy who never wanted to elaborate on the things he said. (Jason was still confused on what he meant by “rotted milk soul.”) That didn’t mean the comments themselves didn’t say a lot about him. And tonight’s comment, accompanied by the prominent and jagged autopsy scars, said more than Danny was probably willing to share.

Any recommendations for a rules-lite mecha game?

THEME: Rules-Lite Mechs.

Hello friend, I sure do! I had a really fun time putting this recommendation list together, so I hope you also find something fun in here!

Reactors & Romance, by JP Bergamo.

Reactors & Romance is a rules-light, narrative-focused, one-shot-oriented RPG featuring mechs and flirting.

Players take on the role of a hot-shot mech pilot with only two ways of problem solving: flirt your way through with your romantic charm, or fight your way out with your mech. Your ability to do either is measured with one stat, your HEAT. Your HEAT measures both how hot your mech’s reactor is getting, and how hot of a pilot you are. Your mech will get less and less reliable as it builds up heat and takes on damage. Fortunately, you have always done your best flirting under pressure.

Say hello to a beautiful, quick game that focuses on the emotions that sizzle inside the gigantic battle machines, as well as the fights that might make those relationships complicated. With a nod to Lasers & Feelings, Reactors & Romance has some additional bits and pieces to play with, such as heat, which both propels you into the danger zone and also makes you very attractive. You also have Keepsakes, which are meant to represent romantic connections that help you clear your Heat. The author references Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Promare, and Gurren Lagann, which all make me super excited about this game.

Mech and Kaiju, by Minbot.

You are the pilot and crew of the Dominator, an advanced bio-mechanical skyscraper sized battle suit designed and built to fight the Kaiju, gigantic leviathan creatures from beyond the depths of space.

Based on the popular Lasers and Feeling RPG by John Harper and created for the Minimalist TTRPG Jam 3.

Simple and descriptive, Mech & Kaiju asks you to determine a few traits of your characters, a few traits of the mech you pilot, and a few truths about the Alien Overlord and the Kaiju you're going up against. When it comes to rolling, it's typical Lasers & Feelings: roll under your target if the situation is related to logic, reason or technology, and roll over if your approach is related to emotion, reasoning, or biological understanding. If you want a contrast between flesh and metal, you might like this game.

Resonance, by Foolhardy Press.

You and your team are Pilots; called upon as a team to control a single Mech capable of defeating the Intelligence

With your skills combined, your party alone can pilot the mech via Resonance, a state of understanding acquired through intense training and compatibility.

Each of you has an individual role to be expressed through your control of the Mech; the Captain, the Gunner, the Engineer, the Hacker, or the Muscle.

You must defeat the enemy Intelligence within a constricted amount of rounds or fail your mission.

Resonance feels very much inspired by Pacific Rim, what with the idea that all of your team is responsible for piloting a single mech, and the fact that the game defines success as relative to a target called The Drift. I like the idea that success here is related to how aligned the crew is in regards to the goal; it's an excellent example of a game that tries to weave the themes of the story into the mechanics.

Mechers, by Jason Pickering.

Welcome to Odin Corp new employee. You get to start your exciting new career as a Mecher working with our resource gathering facilities on the planet Sif 11. Your exciting career will see you wearing an Odin Corp Mech Suit as you transport cargo and supplies between our many different planetary stations as well as light resource gathering duties. In your journey you will see the wondrous sights, flora, and fauna this planet has to offer. Yes! It’s dangerous work, but your hard work will allow the facilities to keep operating so we can supply Odin Corp products to families galaxy wide.

Mechers is a rules-lite ttrpg that uses a 2D6 system, to determine outcomes for player actions. Players pilot a mech equipped with gear and adventure across an alien planet dealing with wild flora and fauna and an overbearing corporation. So grab your Dice, Load your tools, and head out into danger.

If you love mechs but you want to do something other than fight, Mechers is probably where you'll feel most at home. Your players are using mechs as tools to help them explore planets, rather than fight battles, although I wouldn't be surprised if you have to get a little bit physical to get yourself out of some tricky situations. Getting past obstacles requires filling tracks to represent the effort it takes to work through difficult situations.

Attempting to overcome an obstacle involves rolling 2d6 and trying to get a 7 or higher, with results of 10 or higher being without any consequences. It feels very akin to PbtA in terms of result range, but I think the ethos is a little less about generating interesting results and more about using what resources you have to improve your rolls and reduce any damage you take.

Immortal Gambit, by TitanomachyRPG.

IMMORTAL GAMBIT is a pick up and play 1-page mecha TTRPG you can start as soon as everyone has arrived to the session. Every player picks a different role (Pilot//Pilot’s Mech//Battleship Captain// Faction Leader//Rival//Rival’s Mech) and their own goal. Try to accomplish your goal while deducing who you can trust--and who is working against you!

Immortal Gambit looks to be about pitting children against each-other in gigantic mechs, all for political gain. I think it's interesting that a character and a character's mech are two different roles that are played by different people. Each character has a personal goal, one that is hidden from the rest of the table. You take turns trying to turn the tides of battle in your direction, using a d20 and a coin. I think it's interesting that this game is very competitive, and encourages your characters to work against each-other. It's a little bit like a hidden role game, so if you like keeping secrets, I think you might like this.

Big Robots, Big Feelings, by RentAThug.

Prime your laser cannons, draw your energy sword, and pilot your mech to glorious victory the only way you know how: how by feeling more feelings than anyone has ever felt! Battle enemy mecha and your own raging emotions in BIG ROBOTS, BIG FEELINGS!

Big Robots, Big Feelings is a one page RPG designed for the 2024 One Page RPG Jam! The game uses a simplified version of the Powered by the Apocalypse system, with Action Rolls determining outcome. Inspired by mecha anime, these Action Rolls are influenced by your character's emotions and relationships with other characters, allowing you to literally use the power of friendship to destroy your enemies.

This game feels very in tune with the color-coded superhero genre, with bright colors and themes that really double down on tropes. Your character has a background, three emotions, and a Mech that's designed to reflect their personality. When you try to do something, you use 2d6, as per a typical PbtA game, with modifiers related to your emotions and your relationships. In Big Robots, Big Feelings, you truly do win fights with the power of friendship!

INCOMING TRANSMISSION….

Over twenty years ago, the first Demon attacked. Humanity fought back, but suffered great losses in the process.

In the decades since, a secretive program was initiated to build monstrous bio-mechanical mechas to fight the Demons, and to train the young pilots who control them.

You are those pilots.

Sad Teen Mecha Pilots is a collaborative story-telling RPG about the lives of young people faced with the impossible task of saving the world, and the strain it puts on them and their relationships.

A simple one-page game, this is all about the motivations behind a war, and the strain of trying to hold off Doomsday. The lose state of the clock is represented in a Doomsday clock, which looks like it's already partially filled when you start to play the game, although I'm not entirely sure if that's the intention. When the clock hits the Eleventh Hour, your characters are pulled away from their teenage lives for a nearly-hopeless battle.

The bulk of the game is definitely focused on the daily lives of your characters; their family relationships, their struggles with school or friendships, and recovering from wounds. I'd be interested in seeing how this game might combine with a more mechanically complex mech game to provide a lot of pathos in between high-combat scenes - although you as a group would have to be OK with going up against pretty impossible odds.

Nagi Seishiro

At the beginning, Nagi would likely treat sexual encounters as more of a physical experience than an emotional or intimate one. He tends to be carefree and not very emotionally invested, so his approach would be relatively relaxed. In this stage, he would likely be more receptive, allowing his partner to take the lead while he simply follows along without much active participation. For Nagi, sex could be more about pleasure and comfort than any emotional connection

His attitude at this stage would reflect his tendency to remain passive, not necessarily avoiding intimacy but rather responding to his partner's actions without actively initiating or creating emotional depth. He wouldn't be particularly invested in making the experience more profound or meaningful

In a long-term relationship, Nagi's approach to intimacy could gradually evolve, especially if his emotional connection to his partner deepens. While he may still maintain his relaxed and emotionally distant nature, he might begin to take on more active roles in the relationship, though he would not force emotional intensity. Instead, Nagi would approach it with comfort and ease, ensuring that things flow naturally

Bachira Meguru

Bachira loves making others happy, and his playful nature would make him enthusiastic about creating enjoyable experiences for his partner.He thrives on connection and understanding, so he might take the lead to ensure his partner feels comfortable and fulfilled

He Might Be Giver And Receiver

His adventurous spirit means he wouldn't shy away from taking control and adding excitement to the dynamic. He appreciates spontaneity and the unexpected, so being in a more passive role could be just as fun and exciting for him. For him, the emotional and playful connection is more important than specific roles, so he's happy to go with the flow

Bachira is likely to be a flexible partner who adapts to the situation and the person he's with. He's not one to limit himself to a specific role, instead focusing on making the relationship fun, creative, and deeply enjoyable. Whether giving or receiving, his goal would always be to foster a genuine connection

Rin Itoshi

Rin Itoshi's natural tendencies lean toward being a giver, as it aligns with his personality traits of control, focus, and dedication. However, with the right partner who can break through his emotional walls, Rin might also enjoy being a receiver, especially as a way to let go of his constant need for control. Ultimately, his approach in a relationship would reflect his growth and the trust he shares with his partner

Itoshi Rin's personality is much more serious, intense, and goal-oriented compared to someone like Bachira. This would also influence how he approaches relationships. Rin is likely to be a bit reserved and emotionally distant at first, but once he feels comfortable, his true self -full of passion and depth-would emerge

When it comes to dynamics in a relationship, Rin's personality hints at him being more inclined toward a giver, but his need for control and perfectionism might also make him less flexible than someone like Bachira

How to Write a Character

For creative writing to have as deep an impact as possible, you need to give the reader strong characters they can relate to on a personal level.

By borrowing from tried-and-true character archetypes and giving them your personal spin, you can create heroes, villains, and sidekicks that will affect your readers as if they were real people they knew.

Come up with a backstory

Crafting a backstory can help you flesh out an interesting character profile.

“When I’m dealing with characters,” says legal thriller author David Baldacci, “and I’m trying to explain somebody's situation and motivations, you have to look into their past, because [the] past always drives motivations.”

Ask what experiences your character had in elementary school or high school that shaped who they are today. Your character’s backstory can greatly inform your plot.

Develop a character arc

A character must evolve throughout a story.

“The character has to change,” insists crime fiction writer Walter Mosley. “The character doesn’t have to become better. The character doesn’t have to become good. It could be the opposite. He could start good and become bad. He could start off hopeful and end up a pessimist. But he has to be impacted by this world that we’re reading about.”

Plan out your storyline based on your character's goals and how achieving or not achieving them will change them as people. This sort of template can help anchor your narrative.

Do research

If you plan to set your story in a specific locale or period, do enough research to make your characters seem true to life and believable.

“What does it mean, for instance, in the Tudor era to be a male person?” asks Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale. “What does it mean to be a female person? What do those things mean when they’re at different social levels?”

Empathize with your characters

No matter what the type of character you’re developing, try to find some reason you and your reader can relate to their internal conflict.

“You’re living with these people every single day for months at a time—in some cases, years at a time,” says acclaimed children’s author Judy Blume. “You had better feel for them. So, for me, yes, I have great empathy for them.”

When people can empathize with characters, they’re more likely to find them compelling.

Experiment with different approaches

If you usually write characters from a particular point of view (or POV), change things up to challenge yourself.

“Write about someone entirely through the eyes of their friends and family,” suggests journalist Malcolm Gladwell. “So do a profile of someone where you deliberately never talk to the person that you’re profiling.”

There are plenty of ways to craft compelling character descriptions—free yourself up to try new alternatives.

Give your characters flaws

To craft believable characters, you need to give them flaws.

“One, it makes the characters human, just by default, because everybody recognizes that we all have flaws and mistakes,” David says. “But two, it gives you plot elements and plot opportunities because somebody makes a mistake. Why? Because they’re flawed.”

Learn from real people

Pay attention to real people’s mannerisms, personality traits, body language, and physical appearances.

Do research, and be respectful, when you want to write characters with backgrounds that you are not familiar with. Become familiar with different people's cultures, sexual orientations etc.

Talking to people about their experiences will help form your character’s personality.

Let your characters surprise you

Character development can proceed down a host of different avenues.

“Spend a lot of time with your characters and getting to know them,” Judy suggests. “And the way that you get to know them can be different from the way I get to know them. But my way is: They don’t come alive until I write about them, until I put them down on paper.”

As you write, your character’s motivation or perspective might change from what you originally planned.

Play characters off each other

Ask yourself how a secondary character’s personality might thwart the main character’s motivation.

“One of the best ways, as I said, to develop a character is to put that character in relationship to another person,” Walter says. “So as they talk, as they fight, as they work together, we find out more about who they are and what they are.”

The character’s close friends, adversaries, and acquaintances might all have different effects on their behavior.

Take an organic approach

Over the course of the story, be ready for your characters to surprise you as much as the people you know in real life might, too.

Your characters may take on a life of their own.

Avoid static characters by letting yours have their own lives and personalities. Let their stories take you where they lead.

more sylus vs caleb thoughts

random little musings i jotted down during my workday lol. just my personal ramblings and interpretations, not proofread

preface: i don't think that caleb has an approach to life that sylus can appreciate. and i think that no matter their similarities, their dislike for each other ultimately stems from the fundamentals, which are what lengths are they willing to go to—what boundaries that sylus respects above all is caleb willing to cross. they have been traumatized and persecuted in similar ways but developed clashing ideologies after the fact

appearance: caleb doesn’t worry too much about his appearance as long as you like it. he’ll let you pick out his clothes and dress him like a doll. he keeps himself fit and well-groomed, both for pilot reasons and because he thinks it’s the best shape for him to be in, but that’s about as much attention he spares his own looks. it’s not that he doesn’t care, but as someone with little self-worth, it’s just not in his nature to ~waste his energy thinking about it. if you’re happy, he’s happy. sylus isn’t vain, but he’s more concerned with how he looks and more interested in fashion. caleb will wear whatever uniform he has at that stage in life—aerospace academy, daa, fleet, etc.— with indifference, but i’d like to think that sylus sees clothes as a way to express himself after years of not having the freedom to and is meticulous about his wardrobe. 

spending: now that i think about it, sylus’s clothes and other expensive tastes may be 1) a way to compensate for the lack of access he had to those things as a persecuted youth and 2) just. a reflection of his willingness to spend money on himself. he can surround himself with the finer things without hesitation or issue, without questioning if he deserves it. i feel like caleb is more reluctant to do so, e.g., when mc sent him safety tips because his hair dryer was damaged to the point of being hazardous and he hadn’t bought a new one yet. he’ll lay money at mc’s feet, for sure, but the concept of spending it on himself just isn’t something that really occurs to him. it doesn’t cross his mind much, but when it does, he might even find it wasteful

decision-making: caleb is happy to make choices for you. sylus will leave it up to you, question if you really want his opinion, and subtly give you his preference when you say yes

working together?: they’re both ambitious and goal-oriented. sylus is used to working with people he doesn’t like, and caleb is unwilling to be seen as, and feel like, the lesser man. so i think they could overcome their differences and work together quite well potentially, if they shared a common interest 

how their dislike manifests: sylus’s dislike is more muted, mainly because he’s a more emotionally secure character. he doesn’t actively hate caleb without a specific reason, and he’s too self-assured to feel jealous, really. he wouldn’t trade his life or appearance for caleb’s, but it would be nice for mc to view him with the same outright trust and comfort she views caleb with. caleb actively dislikes sylus (though he may conceal it). he sees sylus as a threat to his relationship with mc (it’s less that he doesn’t trust her and more of his own thought that he doesn’t deserve her), but also to his capacity to provide for her and his duty to keep her safe. because even if he thinks himself undeserving, her satisfaction and wellbeing are still his to facilitate, just as he thinks they’ve always been. which is why i am interested in how he’d react to knowing that sylus was pulling strings and protecting her when they were both children. because imagine the person you think you’ve kept safe for years and your reason for existing is only alive because of another man’s care

thrill-seeking: someone mentioned that sylus and caleb are both thrill-seekers, and definitely yes. in my head though i make the distinction that sylus's approach is more typical in that does it for the actual adrenaline, e.g., when he backflips out of the plane in freefall gambit just for the hell of it. but caleb does it to feel alive—because otherwise he does not. in one of his texts from when the player doesn’t log in for 30 days, he says he was critically ambushed by a wanderer but ended up being glad about it because battle is the only he still feels alive in mc’s absence. 

detachment and experiencing pleasure: i personally think there is something…hollow about caleb. and i’m not saying he doesn’t have the right to be with all that’s happened to him, but there’s this numbness and detachment in the back of his mind (even before the chip, imo). there are certain things he just doesn’t care about, certain social courtesies he doesn’t entertain. he sees an old friend whose name he didn’t care to remember, he speaks a little too harshly to non-mc people, he’ll sabotage others with no remorse if he sees fit. i think sylus is just able to derive joy out of more things, which is impressive considering all that’s happened to him. like watching animals in the park/on tv, reveling in the nightlife of the n109 zone, playing games with luke and kieran—he gets genuine happiness/enjoyment from those non-mc things, while caleb’s pleasure from the same activities would be a bit…stilted? there’s just something missing.

self-worth and motivation: sylus values himself outside of mc, caleb doesn’t. going back to the 30 days text, i truly think that if mc were ever to leave, sylus would recover because he has the intrinsic motivation to. he has hobbies, he has passions, he has onychinus, and he finds those things personally rewarding. it’s nice to share them with mc, but he doesn’t do them because of her. but caleb’s motivation is more extrinsic—he does things primarily because of mc, to win her smiles and avoid her tears. he might have so little intrinsic motivation that the lines kind of blur and his extrinsic motivation becomes that. mc’s smiles become personally rewarding. her happiness and safety become his own because, going back to what i touched on in my white blood cell comparison, he finds it hard to have an identity outside of her. he questions why he needs to. he thinks about himself in relation to her. so without her presence, without an adequate amount of any kind of motivation, without any kind of self-worth, i don’t think he’d last

pity: this one is interesting. going back to the hollowness—the extent to which they can feel and enjoy non-mc things—i think that if sylus and caleb sat down and shared their life stories with one another—gladiating, experiments, explosions, persecution—sylus would pity caleb. be genuinely sorry that he’s lived such a sad life. but i’m not sure that caleb would do the same. i think he’s so jaded from his life never really being his own that he hears about sylus’s misfortunes and he’s just like yeah, that happens. doesn’t even blink. that’s just the way the world is for him. and combined with the resentment and jealousy he already feels toward him i think pity would just be salt in the wound lol, he’d hate it

class differences, ethics, and the origins of power: caleb resents sylus for the ease with which & the extent to which he can provide for mc. but i’m wondering if he’d also look down on the way sylus amassed his wealth & power: crime and killing and illegal dealings. obviously with caleb being installed as the fleet colonel his hands aren’t clean either, but that wasn’t exactly his decision. pre-fleet, caleb was working summer jobs in high school just so he could buy gifts for mc. he also went through a rigorous flight school and excelled in it—which was because of his own love for flying and desire to be a pilot, but also fed by his need to be able to fly mc to safety if something were to happen. so sylus and caleb both spent their lives preparing for potential threats to mc, both dedicated time to learning skills and building what wealth they could to eventually make her happy, but there’s that difference in how they went about it. i feel like, at least internally, caleb would kind of scorn and delegitimize sylus’s success—not because he actually cares about the ethics of it, he couldn’t care less about sylus breaking the law (he’ll do the same if necessary)—but because that success is being used to provide for and protect mc. pre-fleet caleb was trying to make an earnest living and do everything by the book so he could give mc a sense of normalcy, and then sylus just swoops in with his motorbike and blood money and thinks he has the right to do the same? he’s busting his ass every day, but one shady deal and sylus has already exceeded everything he’s worked to attain? he resents that. he is somewhat jealous. but he resents it

hm. they both dream of a world where they can live peacefully with mc. but sylus’s world would have more than 2 people in it
