Satirical news publication The Onion has bought Infowars, the media organisation headed by right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, for an undisclosed price at a court-ordered auction.
The Onion said that the bid was secured with the backing of families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, who won a $1.5bn (£1.18bn) defamation lawsuit against Jones for spreading false rumours about the massacre.
[…] The Onion plans to rebuild the website and feature well-known internet humour writers and content creators.
“We are planning on making it a very funny, very stupid website,” said Ben Collins, a former NBC News journalist who is chief executive of The Onion’s parent company, in a statement.
The website also posted a jokey article, saying that Infowars “has shown an unswerving commitment to manufacturing anger and radicalizing the most vulnerable members of society".
[…] No price would be too high for such a cornucopia of malleable assets and minds. And yet, in a stroke of good fortune, a formidable special interest group has outwitted the hapless owner of InfoWars (a forgettable man with an already-forgotten name) and forced him to sell it at a steep bargain: less than one trillion dollars.
Make no mistake: This is a coup for our company and a well-deserved victory for multinational elites the world over.
What’s next for InfoWars remains a live issue. The excess funds initially allocated for the purchase will be reinvested into our philanthropic efforts that include business school scholarships for promising cult leaders, a charity that donates elections to at-risk third world dictators, and a new pro bono program pairing orphans with stable factory jobs at no cost to the factories.
As for the vitamins and supplements, we are halting their sale immediately. Utilitarian logic dictates that if we can extend even one CEO’s life by 10 minutes, diluting these miracle elixirs for public consumption is an unethical waste. Instead, we plan to collect the entire stock of the InfoWars warehouses into a large vat and boil the contents down into a single candy bar–sized omnivitamin that one executive (I will not name names) may eat in order to increase his power and perhaps become immortal.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N.’s most powerful body must support governments seeking to legally declare the intensifying crackdown by Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers on women and girls “gender apartheid,” the head of the U.N. agency promoting gender equality said Tuesday. Sima Bahous, executive director of UN Women, told the Security Council that more than 50 increasingly dire Taliban edicts are being enforced with more severity, including by male family members. That is exacerbating mental health issues and suicidal thoughts especially among young women and is shrinking women’s decision-making even in their own homes. “They tell us that they are prisoners living in darkness, confined to their homes without hope or future,” she said. Under international law, apartheid is defined as a system of legalized racial segregation that originated in South Africa. But a growing consensus among international experts, officials and activists says apartheid can also apply to gender in cases like that of Afghanistan, where women and girls face systematic discrimination. “We ask you to lend your full support to an intergovernmental process to explicitly codify gender apartheid in international law,” Bahous urged the 15-member council, including its five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France. There is no existing international law to respond to “mass, state-sponsored gender oppression,” Bahous said. But she said the Taliban’s “systemic and planned assault on women’s rights … must be named, defined and proscribed in our global norms so that we can respond appropriately.” The Taliban took power in August 2021 during the final weeks of the U.S. and NATO forces’ pullout from Afghanistan after 20 years of war. As they did during their previous rule of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban gradually reimposed their harsh interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia, barring girls from school beyond the sixth grade and women from almost all jobs, public spaces, gyms and recently closing beauty salons. The Security Council meeting on U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ latest report on Afghanistan took place on the final day of the annual meeting of world leaders at the 193-member U.N. General Assembly.
Males oppress female human beings on the axis of sex. The Taliban commits mass rape and genocide of women and girls, bars them from obtaining an education and treats them as domestic and sexual property. Yet despite what research and scholarship has been published across disciplines, despite what investigative journalists have reported, despite the lived experiences of these women and girls being described, despite video and photographic documentation, despite both the data and the grossly inhuman rules and religious code written in policy and holy books, the immense global pattern of the oppression of female human beings by males is dismissed, justified, willfully ignored, or just plainly not prioritized. Male supremacy goes unchallenged.

Asking because I don’t know how to tag properly/don’t have enough tlt brainrot followers on my own blog: I had this revelation that New Rho Could be short for “New Rhodesia” which would say a LOT about the original colonists of the planet (the trillionaires(?))
ooh this is juicy! For context: "Rhodesia" was the name given to Zimbabwe and Zambia by the British, after Cecil Rhodes (you may know him from the Rhodes scholarship. also the imperialism)
I started replying to this and it went horribly long so I'm gonna put it under a cut. My tldr is that I don't think it's a direct reference, both because of naming patterns in TLT and because I don't think the trillionaires who escaped earth would be referencing Cecil Rhodes on purpose, but I also don't think it's a wild leap to make.
I'm throwing this in the tags and I'm 👀 to know what people think.
On the name
I always assumed that New Rho was a reference to the greek word / letter Rho (ρ). This would fit both the naming patterns of the Houses (which are partly inspired by classical mythology) AND what little we see of the naming patterns of BoE, who apparently like to name places after ancient or mythological locations on Earth — see also: Lemuria, Ctesiphon wing, Troia cell.
Note that we actually don't know for sure whether "New Rho" is the name given to the planet by the locals or by the Houses — the only person who actually uses that name is Ianthe during her speech, so it may very well be the case that the Empire renamed New Rho unilaterally, and the name doesn't reflect what its actual inhabitants call it. I don't believe that's the case (because, again, it fits with other naming patterns BoE seem to have + to a lesser extent, I think there would have been hints in the text if that had been the case, extra jeerings from the crowd or whatever if they felt strongly that their planet had another name) I'm just bringing this up here for completion's sake.
About the trillionaires:
I've given a lot of thought to the demographic of the TLT fleet. Although IDK how widespread of an opinion this is in the fandom but, personally, I feel pretty strongly that the bunch of ultra-rich people who would have fleed Earth leaving everyone to die would NOT have been the kind of demographic keen to reference British colonialism.
Like, I think it's important to note that the "first wave" of ships that launched from Earth didn't seem to include ANY major politician from a Western country that we know of — they managed until the last moment to keep up the pretence that it was "just" the first of many trips, and to me the lack of panic points to the fact that many public figures weren't on board. The world leader John puppeteers is heavily implied to be the US president, and even he wouldn't have been on board. John's flashback arc pits him very strongly against the global north, but more than that — imo, it's telling that the only sympathetic governments he could get to listen to him were the NZ government and parts of Oceania. It wasn't just John vs. the West, or John vs. OECD countries. It was John vs. the uber-wealthy, and those exist all over the world.
What I'm getting at is: that the trillionaires weren't overwhelmingly white. Many of them would have been USamerican or British or European, but so many people on board those ships would have been Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, Russian, Thai etc. I'm thinking about 2024 data on List of countries by share of income of the richest one percent and List of cities by # of billionaires (keeping in mind also that in the NtN flashback arc, the stock market has crashed and the economy is in shambles. I would also assume that many Silicon Valley / tech fortunes have dramatically shrunk, and most "trillionaires" would be people who materially control access to resources.)
Basically what I'm getting at is that, TO ME, the TFL fleet was an escape pod put together by a group of people who had the means to decide they should save themselves and fuck everyone else, rather than a colonising project, and that most of them wouldn't be in a rush to identify themselves with the British empire. Many of them, maybe even a majority, wouldn't be white. They're the scifi equivalent of French noblemen fleeing the revolution. Uber-privileged people who became refugees.
Anyway. This is a book.
Everything I've written above explains why, TO ME, whoever on those ships made it out alive + successfully colonised a plane wouldn't be thinking about the British Empire in an especially positive light. However! TLT as a story doesn't exist in a vacuum, and Taz Muir (who exists in the world, and lives in Oxford) would 100% know who Cecil Rhodes is. I can absolutely believe that she settled on a Greek-mythology-inspired naming pattern and then, out of all the available options, decided to reference the colonialist whose statue got removed while she was writing the book.

Brown University students call for divestment from their pro-Palestinian encampment on the campus' Main Green in Providence, Rhode Island, April 24, 2024. (Anibal Martel/Anadolu via Getty Images)
Brown University rejects pro-Palestinian protesters’ demand to divest from Israel
BY ANDREW LAPIN OCTOBER 9, 2024 5:16 PM
Brown University’s board of governors has rejected a closely scrutinized, student-led proposal to divest from companies with business in Israel.
The rejection allays concerns expressed by some pro-Israel groups that the divestment movement was gaining momentum after the pro-Palestinian student encampments at universities across the country last spring.
“Baruch Hashem,” Rabbi Josh Bolton, executive director of Brown/RISD Hillel, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, using a Hebrew term akin to “Thank God.”
Bolton said the vote “is a definitive and powerful rejection of divestment on every level.” Coming so soon after the first anniversary of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel was also significant, he said: “After a year of insanity, antisemitic sloganeering, maligning of Jewish students, this is a day that we can be proud of our institutions.”
The vote was in the works and debated for months before taking place on Tuesday, months before it was expected, by secret ballot. The Brown Corporation agreed with an internal committee that had voted 8-2, with one abstention, to recommend rejecting divestment.
“The Corporation reaffirmed that Brown’s mission is to discover, communicate and preserve knowledge. It is not to adjudicate or resolve global conflicts,” the board wrote in a lengthy statement Wednesday explaining its vote.
The Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island was among the first this past spring to agree to hold a vote on divestment in exchange for a peaceful end to its student encampment. The encampments often pushed for divestment, while Jewish students reported being antagonized by the pro-Palestinian activists. Protesters at Brown were motivated by, among other factors, a Palestinian student who was shot in Vermont in November in an apparent hate crime.
After dismantling their encampment, Brown student activist leaders were permitted to make their formal case for divestment to the board; similar deals were also struck at Northwestern University, the University of Minnesota and elsewhere. An internal committee then considered the case but kept its report private until Wednesday, after the formal vote was announced. Leading up to the vote, Brown would only confirm that it was scheduled for October but provided no other details on timing.
Among its chief rationales for rejecting divestment, the committee determined that Brown was not heavily nor directly invested in the 10 companies included in the proposal “and that any indirect exposure for Brown in these companies is so small that it could not be directly responsible for social harm.” Those 10 companies included Boeing, General Electric, Motorola, Volvo and Northrop Grumman, all of which the divestment proposal said “facilitate the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.”
The school’s leadership declared it was satisfied with the process and the results of the divestment vote.
“Brown’s mission doesn’t encompass influencing or adjudicating global conflict,” Christina Paxson, the school’s Jewish president, and chancellor Brian Moynihan said in a joint statement shared with the school, alumni and press. “Our greatest contribution to the cause of peace for which so many members of the community have advocated is to continue to educate future leaders and produce scholarship that informs and supports their work. A decision to divest would greatly jeopardize our ability to continue to make this contribution.”
Paxson and Moynihan continued, “If the Corporation were to divest, it would signal to our students and scholars that there are ‘approved’ points of view to which members of the community are expected to conform. This would be wholly inconsistent with the principles of academic freedom and free inquiry, and would undermine our mission of serving the community, the nation and the world.”
Some Jews had been angry that the vote was happening at all. One Jewish member of the Brown Corporation resigned in protest over it, saying the school had capitulated to extremists. He was rebuked by Paxson, who has long argued that the vote was happening in accordance with Brown’s usual procedures for considering divestment-related proposals.
At least 100 Brown faculty members publicly supported divestment, while the Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish groups have ardently argued against college Israel divestments in general. Dozens of Republican state attorneys general had warned Brown that any move toward divestment could result in pushback from their states.
The Rhode Island chapter of the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace, which had advocated for divestment alongside other pro-Palestinian groups, did not immediately return a request for comment. The Brown Divest Coalition, together with the national Students for Justice in Palestine movement, posted a profane message on Instagram directed at the Corporation and Paxson, concluding with “Free Palestine” and, in all caps, “All settler colonial institutions will fail.”
Paxson and Moynihan concluded their communication on the vote with a plea that the university community maintain civility even in disagreement.
“Whether you support, oppose or have no opinion on the decision of the Corporation, we hope you will do so with a commitment to sustaining, nurturing and strengthening the principles that have long been at the core of our teaching and learning community,” they said.

It’s bad enough that the presidents tolerated takeovers of university properties, harassment of students and nonstop noise leading to canceled classes and threats to disrupt graduations.
Many school leaders also foolishly offered concessions during negotiations even though most protests included violations of rules and criminal laws.

Some presidents essentially capitulated, with Brown agreeing to vote on the antisemitic divest demand.
Northwestern agreed to a quota system by setting aside five scholarships for Palestinian students each year and giving Muslim groups special spaces on campus for “community building.”
Columbia, the epicenter of the outbreak, is a textbook case of a weak leader allowing her campus to be held hostage for more than two weeks as she negotiated with ringleaders.
The Ivy League school’s president, Minouche Shafik, also twice called in the NYPD to arrest resisters who occupied university property and refused to leave.
The first time was on April 18, when New York’s Finest rousted people who set up a tent camp in the middle of the campus.
Police later said just 38 of those arrested were students, CNN reported.
During the second crackdown, 80 students were arrested, along with 32 outsiders, including James Carlson.
Combined, that means just 118 students were allegedly committing violations serious enough to be arrested in the two raids.
It’s a drop in the Columbia bucket.
Across its undergraduate and graduate programs, the university enrolls nearly 37,000 students.
Coddling troublemakers
Even if the scope is limited to the undergraduate programs at Columbia and Barnard colleges, the total number of enrolled students is about 10,000.
And just 118 of them were arrested.
Of course, more students than that participated in some demonstrations and no doubt others supported the demands or just their friends.
But the small number of hardcore disruptors illustrates how badly Shafik and Columbia’s board bungled the responses.
Had they firmly enforced existing policies against disturbances from the outset, they might have been able to stop the harassment and threats before they metastasized into full-fledged disasters.
By coddling the troublemakers, administrators encouraged them and turned them into campus leaders.
The result was a lost spring semester for serious students and more turbulence for the institution, which will suffer serious reputational damage.
Civil rights probes by Congress and the Department of Education, combined with class-action lawsuits over threats to Jewish students, promise expensive problems for years.
Alumni donations already are falling.

[22:40], Seungcheol, requested by anon
╰┈➤ FF10 "Even if we don't talk for days, I'll always be your best friend" & F20 "everything about you is amazing to me."
summary: your best friend comes by to see why you've been ignoring his messages and calls and you wonder why he hasn't been texting you
wc: 1.7k
warnings: miscommunication, sad feelings, maybe some adult dialogue? I think that's it though
a/n: I hope you like this! It was fun to write and try to figure out how Y/N would get notifications but not from Seungcheol so I figured DND mode would work pretty well! Thank you for your request!
════════════════════════════════
You let out a sad sigh, checking your phone to see several notifications but not from the one person you wanted them from.
You were well aware that your best friend had a life of his own, a demanding career as an idol, and 12 other members to look after but damn it all if you didn't miss Choi Seungcheol.
The two of you had been friends ever since you transferred school, after moving to Daegu with your family. You were nine years old and at that age, boys and girls started to divide, thinking the other had cooties.
But Seungcheol was different. He introduced himself on your first day and stuck by you the whole time.
He'd been by your side ever since. Best friends for always.
And that's how it had always been. Even in junior high when your classmates started showing interest in each other, you and Cheol never found ant romantic interest in you nor you in him, despite what your friends and family said.
Everyone was determined you'd end up dating at some point but it was never like that. You were just best friends.
You were always there for each other and when Cheol auditioned for and got accepted by Pledis Entertainment, you were the first to congratulate him.
Of course, this meant he had to leave Daegu, and unfortunately you, behind to move to Seoul.
His words the day he left were some you'd never forget.
You'd spent half the day crying, claiming he'd forget you in the first year and in true fashion, he hugged you tightly, remind you that you had six years of friendship with you.
"You are my most favorite person in the entire universe, Y/N," he said softly, holding your hands while standing at the KTA station with his parents and your own.
His hands released yours and moved to cup your cheeks. "Everything about you is amazing to me, I couldn't find a new best friend if I tried," he added, gently squishing your cheeks before pulling you into a tight hug, the only kind he ever gave you.
Five years later, Cheol finally debuted in a group called SEVENTEEN with twelve other boys. You graduated high school in Daegu and moved to Seoul on scholarship to SNU* to study veterinary medicine. Moving to Seoul meant a new chapter in your life.
And it meant you were closer to your best friend.
At first, it was difficult for Cheol to meet you but eventually he managed to find some time. As SEVENTEEN continued to grow and find more and more success, Cheol had less and less free time to meet with you in between your classes.
But you always managed to make it work.
Now, being the leader of a globally recognized k-pop group, Seungcheol wasn't as busy as before, trying to help make a name for his group, he was able to have a bit more freedom and also to see you more.
Of course, when you weren't busy with your own career.
After graduating, you managed to snatch a position at one of the busiest vet clinics in Hongdae. You were on a team of three vets, each with three of their own techs. It had a rather large client base but you weren't complaining. It paid the bills of your nice flat near Hongdae, overlooking the river.
It had been several weeks since you'd heard from and even longer since you'd seen Cheol at this point. You never tried to let it bother you before because you were adults now, not children. He had his own circle of friends and colleagues as did you.
But it hurt nonetheless when your notification would ping and it wasn't your best friend texting you or sending you some dumb meme. Your own messages to him had been left on read and of course that didn't mean anything with Cheol and you knew that. He was notorious for checking but not answering his messages.
You just tried to ignore the sad sinking feeling inside you as best as you could but sometimes, your brain got the better of you.
Like today for instance. It was a day like any other, nice weather, the city below your balcony was teeming with life, preparing for Seollal, but you couldn't be bothered to join them, even as the day turned into night and the city really came alive. You just sat wrapped up in your favorite blanket and your own self wallowing.
Your phone pinged again but you'd given up looking at it, instead engrossed in a small pint of Ben & Jerry's you'd saved in your freezer for your next inevitable breakup but decided to indulge a little sooner. And the fact that the expiration date was drawing nearer was not a deciding factor in your indulgence at all.
None whatsoever.
It was just after ten in the evening and you were about halfway through your pint of Chubby Hubby, ignoring the sporadic pings of your phone for the peanut buttery swirls of the frozen treat in your hands when there was a loud pounding knock at your front door.
You almost hadn't heard it but upon hearing it, you turned in your place on your balcony sofa and peered through the glass door.into your apartment. It was silent only for a moment before another loud banging could be heard.
You got up carefully, carrying your ice cream and spoon, blanket still draped over your shoulders as you crossed the floor quickly to see who had disturbed your date with Ben and Jerry.
Pressing the camera button on your intercom system revealed none other than your best friend, standing outside your door looking all sorts of worried and panicked.
Confused and bewildered, you set your ice cream and spoon down and unlocked the door, pulling it open enough to peer through the crack and into the hallway.
The expression on Seungcheol's face morphed from worry to relief upon seeing you. He pushed past the door, wrapping his arms around you, blanket and all, and engulfing you in a tight hug.
"Oh My God I was so worried!" he said, his words muffled by your blanket as he buried his face in your shoulder.
Still just as confused, you hugged him back, uncertain why he was acting as if you had died or something.
When he pulled back, he held you at arms length, looking over you quickly. "Why are you wearing a blanket?" he asked, eyebrows furrowing. "Are you cold? Do you have a fever? What's wrong?"
His words were all over the place, hands moving quickly as he felt your forehead, cheek, and checked to make sure you weren't physically ill.
"Cheol," you whined as he pulled you over to the kitchen island and made you sit down, readjusting your blanket. His eyes fell on the half eaten pint of Ben & Jerry's and the spoon lying beside it before they flitted back to you.
"Who is he?" he demanded. "I'm gonna hurt him."
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. "Calm down Rambo," you snorted. "There is no he," you added. Seungcheol pointed accusatively at the pint sitting on the white countertop, to which you shook your head.
"I'm not eating it cause I got dumped," you explained.
"Then why are you eating ice cream at ten-forty at night?" your best friend demanded.
You shrugged your shoulders. "I'm just a little sad," you replied softly. The stern expression on Seungcheol's face melted away as he took your hands in his. "Why are you sad?" he whispered, sitting across from you in the other bar stool at your kitchen island.
You shrugged your shoulders again, not meeting his gaze.
"Y/N," Seungcheol said, his voice a little louder and more demanding.
"It's nothing," you said, trying to pull away from your best friend but he was much stronger, having been in and out of the gym daily the past few years while you hadn't touched anything heavier than a house cat lately. Seriously, when did he get so strong?
"Y/N, you aren't going anywhere until you tell me why you're sad and why you've been ignoring me."
Wait… what? Ignoring him?
You looked up to meet his gaze finally.
"Ignoring you? I haven't been ignoring you," you replied.
Seungcheol looked around your apartment. "Where's your phone?" he asked. You nodded towards your balcony, lamenting the loss of his warmth as Seungcheol got up and walked over to the sliding glass door, opened it, and picked up your phone.
He returned, unlocking it with your pass code before checking your notifications. As he searched, he let out a groan and rolled his eyes.
"Did you mean to turn on 'Do Not Disturb' mode?" he asked, turning your phone towards you.
The notifications that you received earlier only came in from your boss and your mother. How had you not noticed that?? Oh, because you weren't looking at your phone the whole time.
You quickly grabbed your phone from Seungcheol and opened your chat thread with him to find many unread messages and even a few missed calls.
You let out a laugh, setting your phone on the counter and shook your head. "I think I accidentally switched it on at work the other day," you said as Seungcheol sat across from you again.
"I thought you were mad at me," he said, hanging his head and you shook yours. "I'm not," you replied. "Honestly, I thought maybe you were mad at me or something," you added, causing Seungcheol to snap his head up to look at you.
"You've been a little distant lately," you continued to explain but stopped when your best friend took your hands in his again.
"I promise I'm not mad or upset either. Work the last few weeks has been… intense to say the least. I've been so tired and stressed that I haven't been able to focus on anything else. I'm so sorry," he said softly, offering you a sincere smile and apology.
"Even if we don't talk for days, I’ll always be your best friend, Y/N," he added, squeezing your hands gently.
You returned the smile and nodded. Of course you'll always be best friends. Seungcheol said it himself. He'd never be able to find a better best friend than you and you'd never be able to find a better best friend than him.
"Now that we got that out of the way," Seungcheol said before dropping his smile and giving you a stern but bewildered look.
"Why the hell am I not included in your 'Do Not Disturb' exceptions list?"

Today we celebrate a new addition to the Global Tetrahedron LLC family of brands. And let me say, I really do see it as a family. Much like family members, our brands are abstract nodes of wealth, interchangeable assets for their patriarch to absorb and discard according to the opaque whims of the market. And just like family members, our brands regard one another with mutual suspicion and malice.
All told, the decision to acquire InfoWars was an easy one for the Global Tetrahedron executive board.
Founded in 1999 on the heels of the Satanic “panic” and growing steadily ever since, InfoWars has distinguished itself as an invaluable tool for brainwashing and controlling the masses. With a shrewd mix of delusional paranoia and dubious anti-aging nutrition hacks, they strive to make life both scarier and longer for everyone, a commendable goal. They are a true unicorn, capable of simultaneously inspiring public support for billionaires and stoking outrage at an inept federal state that can assassinate JFK but can’t even put a man on the Moon.
Through it all, InfoWars has shown an unswerving commitment to manufacturing anger and radicalizing the most vulnerable members of society—values that resonate deeply with all of us at Global Tetrahedron.
No price would be too high for such a cornucopia of malleable assets and minds.
All will be revealed in due time. For now, let’s enjoy this win and toast to the continued consolidation of power and capital.
Infinite Growth Forever,
Bryce P. Tetraeder, Global Tetrahedron CEO

I am funding classes for Palestinian refugee kids via our Outschool.org non-profit in partnership with local organizations. I'm proud of this work and invite you to join me by making a donation of $1K or more if you are able (comment for details).
This work is also shaping my thinking of Outschool's vision. Here's some more context:
So far we're helping a little over 100 Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Egypt, US and Gaza with English language and AP classes. We have to be selective given funding constraints, and are focused on talented kids most likely to get scholarships to continue their studies. These kids may be the Palestinian leaders of the future and we are giving them hope in a desperate situation.
Here are a few quotes from kids we're supporting:
"My internet has allowed me to attend two classes till now, a calculus class and an IELTS class, both of which were fun. I loved the new way of learning for me."
"It is a very enjoyable experience and the teachers are very kind, but I was very nervous on my first day and I was not completely ready for the lecture "
"The Calculus teacher is very kind, I really enjoy her classes. The level is good for me because math is my love language."
💙
One thing I have learned through this work is that people in war zones yearn for some semblance of normal humanity. The delightful quotes above are from human teenagers who must be compartmentalizing their ongoing trauma. Integration and healing of this mass trauma will be multi-generational work and is part of the job to be done by the future education system.
Outschool's vision of The Global School is more relevant than ever. We are building an ecosystem of organizations that can deliver far more dynamic and flexible learning than in the past, and so contribute to a path towards hope and healing for more and more people.
I am both daunted by the scale of the task ahead and grateful for the role we can play. We have a duty to the future.
Let's get to it. ✊

No price would be too high for such a cornucopia of malleable assets and minds. All will be revealed in due time. For now, let’s enjoy this win and toast to the continued consolidation of power and capital.

Too Sweet: March’s Backstory
March Starling and his brothers Reese Starling and Dorian Starling are triplets born to loving parents Emma and Charles Starling. Emma stayed home with the boys while Charles worked as the founder and CEO of “Wuthering Reads” a book publishing company. They were wealthy due to family money and lived in a lavish home near the woods. March was always the smartest of his brothers, Dorian was the most athletic, and Reese was the silliest. March was the leader of the group. He was always in charge of what they would play and what activities they would obsess over for the next week.
When they were twelve, a forest fire spread to their home and burned it to ashes. Luckily, the boys were away at summer camp. Unfortunately, their parents were and died due to smoke inhalation. He and his brothers were to be raised by their aunt on his mother’s side, Hannah Crane, a few towns over. Soon after, they moved to New Jersey to escape the increasing forest fires in California.
The boy's parents had left them a considerable amount of money in a trust fund that would be available to them when they turned eighteen. Their aunt was permitted to open the fund to pay for their care, but she never abused that privilege. The boys were left with all the money they could ever need.
In high school, he took an AP Environmental Science course and concluded that global warming was to blame for his parents' deaths. He vowed to always be an environmental advocate and fight climate change. He focused even harder on his grades because he aimed to become an environmental scientist to solve climate change issues.
He moved into the dorms at college, and his brothers followed him and rented an apartment 5 blocks away. Their bond is powerful, and they couldn’t bear living far away from each other. His brothers never went to college. Instead, Reese started a clothing brand called Vanilia Flame, and Dorian took on their father's publishing company from home. March graduated with highest honors and earned a bachelor's in environmental science. Soon after, he decided to earn his master's degree. He applied to Redwood University and was offered a scholarship he didn’t need, as well as his dream internship at the most prestigious climate change research lab in the United States. The catch is that Redwood University is 14 hours away from New Jersey and his brothers. He makes the move anyway. He meets Cricket St. James on his way there.

Mexican biologist Yuliana Bedolla
Off Mexico's west coast, the Baja California Pacific Islands are key global nesting sites for 23 seabird species and Natividad Island shelters 90 percent of the breeding population of the Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus opisthomelas).
Mexican conservation biologist Yuliana Rocío Bedolla Guzmán, Director of the Marine Birds Project at Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas (GECI) says that invasive mammals like cats and rats wiped out at least 27 seabird colonies in the past.
The researchers have been working with fishing cooperatives to decrease the likelihood of reintroductions that would lead to expensive eradication efforts.
"In 2021, we created the local community group “Líderes Comunitarios'' formed by enthusiastic and committed women who have received formal training on island biosecurity and bird identification, and are becoming agents of change in their communities," Bedolla says.
Recently, Bedolla won a 2023 Whitley Award from UK charity Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) and will use the funding to boost the role of local women and fishing cooperative.
"The goal is to continue preventing the accidental introduction of invasive mammals on Natividad and San Benito Oeste islands by actively involving local leaders and fishing cooperatives in biosecurity protocols," she says.
"My Grain of Sand"
Bedolla grew up far from the sea in Moroleón, a small town in central Mexico, where she enjoyed being out in nature.
"But I had my Eureka moment when I learned to snorkel when I was 12 years old at a beach in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, in the Mexican Pacific," she says adding that she remembered a feeling of amazement, wonder and a new sense of connection to nature.
"That experience was life-changing for me and marked the beginning of my journey as a conservationist," Bedolla says, "From that moment on, I knew I wanted to become a marine biologist and contribute with my grain of sand."
She would go on to study Marine Biology at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, learning to dive and study coral reefs and associated invertebrates on several islands in the Gulf of California.
Bedolla would contact GECI in the course of her masters degree and years later, after a Phd in Germany, GECI offered her the directorship of the Marine Birds Project.
Bedolla says that being from the Global South helps her to bring diverse perspectives and approaches to scientific research, which can lead to more innovative and creative solutions.
The San Benito Islands, which is among the islands Yuliana Bedolla is trying to protect from invasive species
Yuliana is a marine biologist, graduated with honors from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS).
She is a Master in Coastal Oceanography from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) and a PhD candidate from the Justus Liebig University of Giessen in Germany. For her doctorate, she obtained a scholarship in Germany. Yuliana speaks Spanish and English and has basic knowledge of the German language. Her doctoral research focuses on the foraging ecology of three petrel species that nest in the San Benito Archipelago, in the Pacific of Baja California.
She began collaborating with the Ecology and Conservation of Islands Group, A.C., (GECI), in 2009 as a field biologist, and is currently the director of the Seabird Project, which aims to restore and conserve seabirds through the use of social attraction systems in conjunction with systematic monitoring, research and environmental education. She has carried out numerous research studies with national and international institutions. Her scientific publications in international journals focus on the response of seabirds to environmental conditions, the parasites that infect seabirds and the response of native fauna to the eradication of invasive mammals.
She has collaborated with several national seabird conservation programs and has been directly involved in environmental restoration projects in Isla Isabel, San Benito Archipelago, Banco Chinchorro and Arrecife Alacranes, related to the eradication of invasive rodents for the benefit of seabird colonies, among other island species. Her activities at GECI include project planning, staff coordination and supervision, applied research and monitoring, environmental education with local communities and dissemination of information in conferences and scientific reports and publications.

Have You Heard Of?
“A man who would be intimidated by me is exactly the kind of man I would have no interest in.”
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie b.September 15, 1977
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an award-winning author and an influential advocate of feminism. She has captivated people worldwide with her powerful storytelling and her outspoken campaign for gender equality. She was born in Enugu, Nigeria, and was raised in an academic environment that surely nurtured her passion for writing. As one of six siblings she grew up in the university town of Nsukka, her Mother was the first female registrar at University of Masuka and her father was Nigeria's first professor of statistics, and later became Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the same university. She attributes her success in part to her parents for, encouraging her self-confidence and being supportive by always showing that they had confidence in her. She began studying medicine and pharmacy at the university school her parents worked at; though, writing seems to have called to her, as she also edited the magazine created by the medical students. She left her medical studies after a year and a half when at nineteen she gained a scholarship to Eastern Connecticut State University in America, where she graduated summa cum laude (with highest honours) with a degree in communication and political science and continued her passion for writing by producing articles for the university journal. She went on to gain her master’s degree in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University, become a Hodder Fellow at Princeton University, earned an MA in African Studies from Yale University, and she was awarded a fellowship by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University. During this time, she has released numerous novels, including A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions. She holds strong feelings regarding gender equality and is proud of her femininity, taking pleasure in fashion whilst grappling with the knowledge that she will be judged for the way she chooses to dress. Her belief is that you should be happy to be who you are, without being forced into a mould society has decided fits your gender. Refusing to conform to a female academic stereotype, she loves make-up and has been the face of Boots No7 cosmetics. Now married with a daughter, she splits her time between Nigeria, where she teaches writing workshops, and the United States. All in all, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a world-renowned writer, acclaimed academic, fashion icon, beauty queen and a feminist warrior we all should have heard of.

CHURCH MUSIC AROUND THE GLOBE: Launch Event on Zoom, Nov 14
From my friend Dr. Monique Ingalls:
We are excited to announce the launch of two website projects on November 14th! In collaboration with the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, the third edition of the Nigerian Christian Songbook will be updated with new songs and content. In addition, a new project, the Global Church Music Bibliography highlights underrepresented voices in church music scholarship. This is an interactive dashboard and map that features church music scholars writing about their own traditions outside of North America.
JOIN US:
Where: Online via Zoom
When: November 14th at 9am CDT
We hope you will join us in celebrating the launch of these two projects!
+++
First, we are excited to release the third edition of the Nigerian Christian Songs project. This project began in 2021 with the first class of doctoral students from the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary (NBTS). While the content is housed on our website, it is created by the students in Nigeria. What would it look like to build a church songbook from the bottom up, rather than the top down? How would a songbook look (and sound) if it were built around the perspectives of lay church members and leaders?
The collaboration between Baylor and NBTS has occurred three times, as each class has added new material to the website. This year, Drs. Ingalls, Baker, and Ayanyinka guided the class in their new additions, expanding this vital resource.
The website is here: Nigerian Christian Songs: A Digital Songbook for Christian Worship https://ccms.music.baylor.edu/resources/nigerian-christian-songs-website
+++
Second, we are excited to announce the launch of our new project: The Global Church Music Bibliography. This project responds to the struggle to find research by church music scholars writing about their own traditions outside North America. While research exists about church music in different parts of the world, it is most often done by outsiders to that community. (In many cases, an American scholar travels to those places and then writes about what they observed.). This project intentionally and exclusively consists of English-language research by non-Western scholars. This project provides various ways to engage with the material, including an interactive map.
