"An estimated six million tonnes of used coffee grounds are created annually. Most go to landfill, generating methane and CO2, or are incinerated for energy.
It’s an obvious waste of a byproduct still rich in compounds (if not flavour). On a domestic level, try directing your cafetiere contents to your garden, not your bin: used coffee grounds are excellent as an addition to home compost bins and wormeries, a mulch for roses and a deterrent to snails. And on a global scale, science might have the answer.
A new study in the Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology suggests that used coffee could hold the key to a pressing environmental problem: agricultural contamination.
How could old coffee grounds solve agricultural pollution?
Scientists from Brazil’s Federal Technological University of Paraná found that leftover coffee can absorb bentazone, a herbicide frequently used in agriculture.
When old coffee grounds are activated with zinc chloride, their carbon content becomes 70 per cent more efficient in removing the herbicide.
The study’s tests involved bentazone dissolved in liquid and treated with activated carbon from used coffee grounds, to see how it affected onion root tissues called meristems. All plants grow from meristem tissue and a plant’s development is disrupted when its meristems are damaged.
If the test can be replicated on an industrial scale, it would be an environmental double whammy: diverting coffee waste from landfill and preventing damage to wildlife and nature from herbicides.
Why is bentazone a problem?
...The UK’s Environment Agency cites bentazone as having the potential to affect long-term water quality and lead to an increased need to treat the UK’s drinking water sources. The herbicide has been shown to impact human health if it is inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.
While this is only preliminary research and more studies are needed to determine efficacy of activated coffee grounds on a global scale, it’s a promising start. The authors of the study say their results “suggest a circular economy solution for spent coffee grounds that are currently discarded without any recycling or reuse system”. We can all drink to that."

The National Nuclear Safety Administration’s permit authorises scientists at the Shanghai Institute to operate the reactor for 10 years, during which time they will test its capabilities and limitations. The reactor has an output of only 2MW, however once its technology matures, it will have a number of advantages over conventional uranium-fuelled designs.
For example, thorium is less radioactive than uranium or plutonium, produces less toxic waste and cannot be used to create nuclear weapons. And because it is in liquid form, it solidifies in the event of a disaster, which would limit environmental damage.
The reactor also has advantages that are more specific to China, since the country is thought to have several hundred thousand tonnes of the element, or enough to meet its total energy needs for more than 20,000 years.[...]
As well as their inherent safety advantages, thorium molten salt SMRs can be located in many types of environments, including remote, desert or off-grid areas. This may have benefits for industries such as mining, which often require reliable power sources far from water or conventional utilities. It may also help power infrastructure on the “belt and road” programme in central Asia.

Hello, Mr. Haitch
You mentioned before in one of your answers that "climate and social justice are inextricably linked." Do you mind saying how so?
Thank you!
Tumblr media
Our current geological age - the Anthropocene - is inextricably linked to the history of capitalism, no matter how you date it. The three main theories are that it began in 1945 at the close of the second world war and the international trade agreements and advent of nuclear testing; that it began with the industrial revolution; or (and this is the theory I subscribe to) it began between 1492 and 1610 with European colonialism in the Americas.
The anthropocene is defined as an age of globalised human control and impact on the earth's environment, ranging from climate change to biodiversity, and the early history of Europe's colonisation of the Americas fits the bill pretty well. Beginning in 1492 the indigenous population of the Americas collapsed by 95% (population estimates run from 60 million to 120+, the loss represents about a 10% global population loss), along with vast amounts of infrastructure including cities, towns, trading outposts, road networks, irrigation systems, and so on - all in an area (especially equatorial America) where the local flora grows rapidly. The deaths of so many with so few colonisers to replace them saw a rapacious period of reforestation, creating a massive carbon sink which drew down an estimated 13 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, ushering in The Little Ice Age. Global temperatures fell for the first time since the agricultural revolution, and put huge stress on an already fracturing feudal system. Over the course of 200 years Europe went through fits of social and political revolution, where the aristocracy were (sometimes violently) deposed by an ascendant merchant class ushering in our current age of liberal democracy, the enshrining of private property, and fixation on trade and prosperity.
The population collapse also provided a rationale for the Atlantic slave trade, as the enslaved workforce the Europeans had been using up until then were pretty much all dead.
With me so far?
Since the industrial revolution our economic system has been reliant on exponential growth, leading to an ever increasing appetite for raw materials, land, and cheap (or free) labour. The environmental and human costs have increased in lock step with one another - both crises borne of the same root. We cannot address one without addressing the other.
This is a very condensed version of the argument and I'm glossing over a lot here. If you're interested I'd recommend tracking down the following texts (usually available at libraries, particularly University ones):
The American Holocaust, David Stannard
The Human Planet, Lewis and Maslin
The Problem of Nature, David Arnold
The Sixth Extinction, Elizabeth Kolbert

The Carbon Footprint of Amazon, Google, and Facebook Is Growing. (Sierra Club)
Excerpt from this story from Sierra Club:
IN MARCH The Information reported that Microsoft was in talks with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, about spending an eye-popping $100 billion on a gargantuan data center in Wisconsin dedicated to running artificial intelligence software. Code-named “Stargate,” the data center would, at full operation, consume five gigawatts of electricity, enough to power 3.7 million homes. For comparison purposes, that’s roughly the same amount of power produced by Plant Vogtle, the big nuclear power station in Georgia that cost $30 billion to build.
Stargate is in the earliest of planning stages, but the sheer scale of the proposal reflects a truth about artificial intelligence: AI is an energy hog. That’s an embarrassing about-face for the technology industry. For at least 20 years, American electricity consumption has hardly grown at all—owing in part, say computer scientists, to steady advances in energy efficiency that have percolated out of the tech industry into the larger economy. In 2023, according to the US Energy Information Administration, total electricity consumption fell slightly from 2022 levels.
But according to a report published last December by Grid Strategies, a consultancy that advises on energy policy, multiple electric utilities now predict that US energy demand will rise by up to 5 percent over the next five years. One of the chief culprits responsible for the surge, say the utilities, are new data centers designed to run AI. To meet the growing demand for power, those utilities want to build new fossil fuel power plants and to dismantle climate legislation that stands in their way.
For environmentalists, this represents a giant step backward. Artificial intelligence was supposed to help us solve problems. What good are ChatGPT and its ilk if using them worsens global warming?
This is a relatively new story—the AI gold rush is still in its infancy, ChatGPT only having debuted in fall 2022. But computing’s energy demands have been growing for decades, ever since the internet became an indispensable part of daily life. Every Zoom call, Netflix binge, Google search, YouTube video, and TikTok dance is processed in a windowless, warehouse-like building filled with thousands of pieces of computer hardware. These data centers are where the internet happens, the physical manifestation of the so-called cloud—perhaps as far away from ethereality as you can get.
In the popular mind, the cloud is often thought of in the simple sense of storage. This is where we back up our photos, our videos, our Google Docs. But that’s just a small slice of it: For the past 20 years, computation itself has increasingly been outsourced to data centers. Corporations, governments, research institutions, and others have discovered that it is cheaper and more efficient to rent computing services from Big Tech.
The crucial point, writes anthropologist Steven Gonzalez Monserrate in his case study The Cloud Is Material: On the Environmental Impacts of Computation and Data Storage, is that “heat is the waste product of computation.” Data centers consume so much energy because computer chips produce large amounts of heat. Roughly 40 percent of a data center’s electricity bill is the result of just keeping things cool. And the new generation of AI software is far more processor intensive and power hungry than just about anything—with the notable exception of cryptocurrency—that has come before.
The energy cost of AI and its perverse, climate-unfriendly incentives for electric utilities are a gut check for a tech industry that likes to think of itself as changing the world for the better. Michelle Solomon, an analyst at the nonprofit think tank Energy Innovation, calls the AI power crunch “a litmus test” for a society threatened by climate change.

In July, the local government of the Italian region of Sardinia suspended the construction of hundreds of new wind turbines, claiming that it would destroy the island’s beautiful landscape. In October, the government then announced its intention to stop the construction of new wind farms altogether, also adding solar panels to the ban.
These decisions followed mounting protests by large groups of activists who opposed these renewable energy developments, advocating instead for the use of natural gas to produce electricity. In August, unknown people set fire to two wind farms that were due to be installed in the north of the island. Similar attacks destroyed solar panels destined to be constructed on local farmland.
Under its new plans, Sardinia is betting instead on developing its natural gas infrastructure while delaying the shutdown of its coal-fired power plants, which now produce more than 60 percent of the electricity needed by the island of 1.6 million people.
The opposition to renewables in Sardinia is a blow not only to other Italian local governments, which are facing tough decisions on how to curb greenhouse gas emissions. It is also a major setback for the central government in Rome and especially for the European Union and its European Green Deal, the ambitious climate plan for the entire continent.
The ongoing battle in Sardinia is the latest example of the struggle European countries are facing in reaching their ambitious decarbonization plans in the continent. Countries such as France, Germany, and Spain have been facing opposition to these projects over the past few years, raising questions about the attainability of a central element of the EU’s green strategy.
The ability and political will of each European country to translate Europe’s plans and goals into actual national laws and policies will be crucial in reaching the continent’s ambitious climate targets. But the risk that a two-speed—or even multispeed—Europe could ultimately derail the overall plans is growing, and it will test the new European Commission’s determination to achieve sufficient progress during its upcoming mandate.
“The commission’s legacy will depend on its ability to push forward vital green policies within a maelstrom of political and domestic discontent,” said Mats Engström, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. “The climate team’s members must also bridge political divides within the commission to deliver on its Green Deal promises. Whether it succeeds in this task will be closely scrutinized over the upcoming five-year term.”
The European Green Deal, a policy framework to achieve climate neutrality—meaning full decarbonization—by 2050, was approved in 2020. Subsequent legislation set a 55 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. EU institutions are currently assessing the feasibility of an intermediate goal of a reduction of 90 percent by 2040, which has also been proposed by the commission.
Replacing fossil fuel energy production with renewables is just one aspect of the bloc’s goals. Others include recovering Europe’s biodiversity, making its food system more sustainable, and creating a well-functioning circular economy, all while making its industries greener.
These policies will affect all sectors of the bloc’s economy—households, industry, services, and agriculture—with the aim of also making it more competitive globally.
Analysts at Brussels-based think tank Bruegel published a report in October that identified four areas of risk that may derail the achievement of the EU’s climate goals, which also appear to be intertwined: geoeconomic instability, technological progress, exacerbated inequality, and policy credibility.
“A global economy with more trade disputes and greater risk of conflict endangers the massive capital investment needed for the transition, while the cost of clean technologies is a primary determinant of the economic viability of decarbonisation,” the analysts wrote. They added: “Climate policies will affect people’s everyday lives in disruptive ways, meaning that regressive outcomes must be guarded against, balanced with a concrete commitment to the established climate policy pillars.”
In a September report, the European Commission—the executive arm of the EU—listed a number of key achievements already reached. EU’s greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 32.5 percent from the 1990 baseline, while the European economy has grown by 67 percent over the same period, demonstrating the decoupling of growth from emissions.
However, the commission warned that although the installation of renewable power plants has been at a record high over the past few years, the pace toward EU energy efficiency and renewable targets must be further increased to ensure their achievement.
The bloc’s executive also warned about the significant challenge to the continent’s competitiveness due to rising competition with China, high energy price differentials compared to industrial competitors such as the United States, and potential strategic dependencies on clean energy technologies.
At the same time, European citizens still face high energy bills, which—combined with the rising cost of living—further reduce their purchasing power.
“The sectors in which it goes pretty well are the sectors where the economic case is there,” said Linda Kalcher, the executive director at Strategic Perspectives, another Brussels-based think-tank. “For instance, as long as there are schemes that actually support households to buy heat pumps or electric vehicles, we see that there is high uptake on them. The areas where it’s still not economically beneficial, like renovating the building stock, are obviously very slow.”
This September’s Eurobarometer, a survey conducted over the previous few months on behalf of European institutions, found that 81 percent of the sample agree that implementing a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target will contribute to Europe’s fight against climate change and to the protection of the environment.
Yet, 53 percent said the EU should encourage member states to make their first or second energy priority enacting measures to support households in energy poverty, while 50 percent said that member states should prioritize focusing on measures to reduce energy consumption or that help citizens to produce or consume energy from renewable sources.
Conall Heussaff, a research analyst at Bruegel, said the biggest risk that could hamper the achievement of the EU’s 2030 decarbonization targets is what the think tank called the “policy credibility risk.”
“There’s a danger for divisive politics to use the energy transition as a wedge, as a way to divide the public and push against the sort of ‘elite imposition’ on people’s lives,” he said.
Political disputes about climate policy were evident in the run-up to European Parliament elections in June in relation to several policy measures, including the phaseout of internal combustion engines, the so-called nature restoration law, and gas boiler sales bans in Germany. These laid bare the divisive nature of policies with a direct impact on households, businesses, and agriculture.
Experience suggests the European Green Deal policies will likely face postponements and even rollbacks in the coming years, analysts warn. These rollbacks, in turn, could stall planned investments and trigger a rise in cost for businesses and citizens that have already made investments in clean technologies.
Achieving the intermediate 90 percent emission reduction target by 2040 largely relies on replacing the current expenditure on fossil fuel with capital investments in clean technologies. According to the European Commission, the annual investment required would be around 700 billion euros ($760 billion) from 2031 to 2040.
But geoeconomic risk looms large on these plans. The disruption of clean technology supply chains potentially emerging from simmering trade tensions between the major trading blocs could derail the continent’s energy transition. So too could broader economic shocks, which might destabilize the macroeconomic situation by driving up interest rates or limiting fiscal space of European countries.
Trade tensions—particularly with China, which dominates the market for critical raw materials and many green technologies, such as solar panels and batteries—could slow down the energy transition and increase its costs.
At the same time, the initial capital investment for technologies such as wind, solar, and batteries comprises the largest share of the total cost of their implementation. Rising interest rates could therefore slow down such investments.
Increased geopolitical instability—and the possible reelection of former U.S. President Donald Trump, some argue—could also trigger higher defense spending by European countries, limiting their fiscal space to finance the energy transition. The slower development of technologies could also have a negative impact. All pathways to a net-zero economy partially rely on technologies which are so far unproven on a large scale.
In particular, progress on carbon removal technologies will be key, because if it proved to be insufficient, other sectors such as agriculture or industry could be required to reduce emissions more quickly. “To succeed, the 2040 climate and energy policy framework needs to be designed to be resilient to such risks,” Bruegel’s analysts said in their October report.
The green transition envisaged by the EU will need to have the buy-in of all the bloc’s governments as well as its citizens to overcome the risks to its success. It will require European leaders to ensure the timely and thorough implementation of existing EU legislation, while limiting political concessions to the many different groups opposing the changes needed.

One of the first classes we had to take in highschool as freshmen was AP Human Geography. And the fact that is not a required course everywhere really explains a lot about why international politics becomes so heated in America.
We had to go over:
Population, population theories, population growth and decline, immigration policies, and the cause and effects of migration
Types of maps, scales, patterns regions, space, to properties and patterns in where humans choose to live
Cultures, in depth analysis on languages, religions, ethnicity, and gender roles, and diffusion of cultures and patterns
Political Regions and policies, including organization of territories, countries, states, types of borders, political conflicts, conflicts related to political borders vs cultural borders, explanations of historic political conflicts, and categorization of geopolitics and international relations
Agricultural history, types, patterns, regions, agricultural revolutions, settlements, production of food, and agricultural practices and things such as chemicals and labor
Industrial and Economic development, types of economies, types of trade, patterns and processes of industrialization and production, and globalization and economic issues
Cities and Urban land usage, geography, development and organization of cities, models of urban structure and land use, and city problems and planning
Environment and Society, including human interaction and sustainability, environmental policies and challenges, and the impact of humans on the environment
We had to go over issues like modern day occupied territories and conflicts, which came in very handy once the war in Ukraine and later Palestine started; as we had gone in depth into the history and politics of both.
Part of the section on population went over why policies on birth control and abortion is so important in society and in women's health. We went over how an areas policies about access to healthcare for women greatly affects mortality rates and population sizes, as well as how women are treated. The main take away from this section was how women are one of the most important demographics, and reflect the larger status of society through how they are treated.
We went over cultural patterns such as how racism and prejudice can shape where people choose to live, and how cultural pockets can form within a broader society; as well as current and historic forms of segregation and prejudice.
Most if not all of the sections focused heavily on historic and modern circumstances as examples -most of which most history curriculums probably skip over. The tests for the maps section was made up of memorizing specific continents and then having to locate countries and their capitals from memory on the day of the test. Essentially, filling in blank maps. Most of the homework was about seven pages of fill in the blank questions from the textbooks.
All in all, while my experience with it at the time was hindered by the fact that our teacher often copied homework straight from the internet, and would not admit some of the questions had no answers because of that, I think the class in general was probably one of the best I've had as far as actual education. It really throughly explained a lot of concepts and patterns that maybe you've noticed before, but didn't have a name for until now. It also broke down a lot of issues that most history curriculums don't cover, and cleared up a lot of blind spots that we had before.
I would say anyone who has the chance to take it definitely should. And in general, I think if more of the subjects of the course were talked about in schools, a lot of the debates and issues we have would be less heated and more productive. I think if anyone wanted to learn the same things but didn't have access to the course itself, a lot of John Oliver's videos cover the same subjects in a way that doesn't leave you breaking down at 11:00 pm because your sadistic teacher included a question that has no answer in the homework again.

World Wilderness Congress Focuses on Indigenous Knowledge
Tumblr media
"Humanity stands at a crossroads and must come together to realize dramatically different and supportive relationships with one another, the Earth, and all life on the planet, if we are to surmount cascading ecological and social crises now underway."
That was the message of Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples, who on Sunday welcomed hundreds of attendees to the 12th World Wilderness Congress convening this week in the Black Hills, or He Sapa in the Lakota language. Though these gatherings, dedicated to assessing and often resetting global conservation work, date back to the 1970s, this is the first such congress being convened by a tribal authority. The agenda is dedicated heavily to centering Indigenous perspectives in the global struggle to protect wild lands and waters.
Indigenous peoples articulate alternative environmental perspectives and relationships to the natural world. Indigenous mythologies and oral traditions express a non-anthropocentric environmental ethic. Indigenous groups offer ancient tried-and-tested knowledge and wisdom based on their own locally developed practices of resource use. And, as Native peoples themselves have insisted for centuries, they often understand and exhibit a holistic, interconnected and interdependent relationship to particular landscapes and all of the life forms found there. Despite making up a tiny fraction of the world's population, Indigenous peoples hold ancestral rights to some 65 percent of the planet. This poignant fact conveys the enormous role that Native peoples play not only as environmental stewards, but as political actors on the global stage.
All over the world, Native peoples are engaged in battles with hostile corporations and governments that claim the right to set aside small reserves for Native people, and then to seize the rest of their traditional territory. They are confronting the destructive practices of industry and leading the charge against climate change while defending the rivers, forests and food systems that we all depend on. At the same time, they are blocking governments from eroding basic rights and freedoms and turning to the courts of the world to remedy 500 years of historical wrongs. Native peoples are putting their lives on the line and fighting back for political autonomy and land rights. And all the while, they are breathing new life into the biocultural heritage that has the potential to sustain the entire human race.
Looking Horse, the 19th Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and Bundle, is as revered among the original people of this land as the Dalai Lama is by the people of Tibet or the Pope for Catholics around the world.
"We warned that some day you would not be able to control what you had created. And that day is here. Mother Earth is sick and has a fever," Looking Horse told the group assembled from nations, tribes, and communities across the world.
The chills of that "fever"--the accelerating shocks of climate destabilization caused by centuries of colonial extraction, fossil fuel combustion, and ecological destruction--rocked communities around the world in 2023, with 2024 continuing to break heat records. A "State of the Climate" report that drew on the work of nearly 600 scientists pointed to unprecedented levels of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere as the cause of Earth's overheating. Records were similarly broken for ocean heat, sea-ice loss, and sea-level rise. In all, industrially-driven global warming exposed nearly 80 percent of the people on the planet to at least 31 days of extreme heat, another study found. This level of heat was virtually impossible if not for the burning of fossil fuels and development-driven deforestation, Climate Central researchers have reminded us.
But organizers and attendees at WILD12 aren't there to haggle over carbon credits or debate the benefits and risks of carbon capture technologies and blue hydrogen, the substance of so many climate gatherings and debates. Instead, The WILD Foundation, through decades of international gatherings, aims to interrupt one driver of climate crisis that gets far less air time than carbon emissions: the global loss of the planet's wild spaces, which for millions of years have served as the planet's lungs and carbon sinks.
Yet even conservation spaces and agendas have offered a shallow understanding of problems and solutions, overlooking the deeper cultural--and thus colonial--roots of ecological collapse. What makes this year's congress so significant is its aim to reformulate the global conservation agenda not only by placing Indigenous leadership at the forefront of conservation action, but more foundationally, by centering Indigenous knowledge and worldviews in understandings of what Western cultures call wilderness.
In other words, the cultural roots of the collapse of our shared biosphere lies not in the make, model, or brand of the tools we use to clearcut forests or fuel plastics production. Rather, it lies in a fundamental misunderstanding that goes all the way to the bottom of Western thought: the hierarchical dualism that imagines the "human" as both separate from and superior to "nature".
Perhaps the most important aspect of Indigenous cosmology is the conception of creation as a living process resulting in a living universe in which a kinship exists between all things. Thus the Mother Earth is a living being, as are the Sun, Stars and the Moon. Hence the Creators are our family, our Grandparents or Parents, and all of their creations are children who are also our relations.
What needs to be understood and challenged, then, is the very basic conceptual groundings of Western culture itself, which gave birth to capitalism as a global economic system for extracting profit both from the bodies of people racialized and gendered as "others" and from land, treated as a dead thing or "resource" to extract from. For it is these philosophical and economic assumptions that--especially from an Indigenous perspective--facilitated colonization and enabled the genocides, slavery, and racial capitalism that followed.
The industrialized West is largely unaware of how Indigenous societies have functioned and the strengths they possess that industrial cultures have lacked. Our notions of progress are based on the idea that high tech means better, and that industrial cultures are somehow more advanced socially. The current state of our threatened environment demands that communication channels be opened for dialogue and engagement with Native environmental ethics. Native people are not only trying to protect water sources, clean up uranium tailings and mount opposition to fossil fuel extraction, they are also continuing their spiritual ways of seeking to celebrate and support all life by means of ceremonies and prayers.

The Importance | Human Rights, Animal Rights, and Environmental Stewardship: A Perspective from Human Rights Ambassador Sean Bardoo
As a Human Rights Ambassador, “I have dedicated my entire life to the service of fighting for the dignity and freedom of all individuals, and in addition to the welfare of animals.” However, the scope of human rights advocacy extends beyond just the rights of people — it encompasses the protection of animals and the stewardship of our environment. These interconnected responsibilities are essential to building a just, sustainable, and compassionate world. The fight for human dignity is deeply intertwined with how we treat the creatures that share our planet and the environment that sustains us all. Human Rights and the Right to Self-Determination: At the heart of human rights is the principle of self-determination — the freedom to make choices about one’s own life and body. This includes the right to reproductive health and the right to self-defense. Both are fundamental to ensuring that individuals can live in safety, autonomy, and dignity. Reproductive rights, for instance, empower women to make critical decisions about their bodies and their futures. When women are denied access to reproductive healthcare, including contraception and safe abortion, they are often forced into cycles of poverty and exploitation. This denial of rights stifles their potential and infringes on their autonomy. It is a violation of the most basic human right — the right to control one’s own destiny.
Similarly, the right to self-defense ensures that individuals can protect themselves and their loved ones from harm. This right, which must be exercised with responsibility, is vital in protecting vulnerable populations from violence and exploitation. Without it, individuals are left powerless to defend their dignity and safety in the face of threats. Ensuring that these rights are upheld is not just about individual freedom, but about creating a society where all people are able to live without fear.
Protecting Animal Rights Human: Dignity extends to the ethical treatment of animals. The way a society treats its animals reflects its values and level of compassion. For too long, animals have been exploited for profit in industries that subject them to cruelty and neglect. From factory farming to animal testing, these practices inflict unnecessary suffering on living beings who, like us, experience pain, fear, and distress. Advocating for animal rights means recognizing that animals, too, deserve protection from exploitation. While animals may not have the same legal status as humans, they are sentient beings, and our moral duty is to ensure they are treated with kindness and respect. The fight against factory farming, where animals are often confined in inhumane conditions, is a fight for a more ethical world. Ensuring animals are treated with dignity is not just an act of compassion, but a reflection of our shared humanity.
Environmental Stewardship: A Collective Responsibility Equally important is the role of environmental stewardship in human rights. The health of our planet is inextricably linked to the well-being of its inhabitants — both human and animal. Environmental degradation, driven by deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable practices, not only destroys ecosystems but also leads to the displacement of vulnerable communities. Climate change, fueled by human activity, has become one of the greatest threats to human rights globally, disproportionately affecting impoverished and marginalized populations. Protecting the environment is not just a matter of preserving natural beauty; it is about safeguarding the fundamental rights to clean air, water, and food.
Environmental degradation has led to a rise in natural disasters, food shortages, and forced migrations, with the poorest and most vulnerable bearing the brunt of these crises. By fighting for environmental stewardship, we are fighting for the future of humanity. As Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of Singapore, once said, “The environment must be preserved for future generations.” This belief underscores the idea that human rights and environmental protection are deeply intertwined. We cannot secure a just future for our children if we do not take bold action to protect the planet they will inherit.
In the end, the fight for human rights is also a fight for the ethical treatment of animals and the preservation of our planet. Together, these causes form the pillars of a just and compassionate world. We must recognize that every decision we make — from how we treat each other to how we care for animals and the environment — has far-reaching consequences. Our shared future depends on our willingness to stand up for the dignity of all living beings and the Earth itself. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that human rights, animal rights, and environmental stewardship are protected and preserved. Only then can we create a society that values life in all its forms, a society where dignity, freedom, and compassion are not just ideals, but realities for all.
Official Crown Ambassador Sean Bardoo appointed by: HER ROYAL HIGHNESS QUEEN MARIA AMOR| THE TRAVELING QUEEN OF THE WORLD. Interview By: Journalist- Fescoda Ruskombski

How to Choose the Right Transformer Bushing for Your Needs
Transformer bushings are critical components in power transformers, providing electrical insulation and mechanical support to the conductors that pass through the grounded transformer tank.  Selecting the right transformer bushing is essential to ensure the reliability and efficiency of your electrical system.  In this article, we will explore the key factors to consider when choosing a transformer bushing, the importance of quality, and the role of transformer bushing manufacturers in India.  Additionally, we will touch upon the global market and the significance of exporting transformer bushings.
Understanding Transformer Bushings
A transformer bushing serves as an insulating device that allows an electrical conductor to pass safely through a grounded barrier, such as a transformer tank or wall.  Bushings are designed to provide insulation between the high-voltage conductor and the grounded transformer tank, preventing electrical faults and ensuring safe operation.
There are several types of transformer bushings, including:
Oil-Impregnated Paper (OIP) Bushings:  These are widely used due to their excellent electrical insulation properties and cost-effectiveness.
Resin-Impregnated Paper (RIP) Bushings:  Known for their superior mechanical strength and reduced fire hazard compared to OIP bushings.
Solid Porcelain Bushings:  Common in lower voltage applications, offering robustness and durability.
Composite Bushings:  Combine various materials to provide enhanced performance in challenging environments.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Transformer Bushings
Voltage Rating:  The voltage rating of the bushing should match the operating voltage of the transformer.  Using a bushing with an inadequate voltage rating can lead to insulation failure and transformer damage.
Current Rating:  The current rating should align with the transformer's operational requirements.  High current ratings ensure that the bushing can handle the electrical load without overheating.
Environmental Conditions:  Consider the environmental conditions where the transformer will be installed.  Factors such as temperature, humidity, pollution levels, and seismic activity can influence the type of bushing suitable for your needs.  Composite bushings, for instance, are often preferred in highly polluted or seismic-prone areas.
Type of Insulation:  The insulation type (OIP, RIP, solid porcelain, composite) should be chosen based on the specific application and environmental factors.  RIP bushings are favored for their fire resistance, while OIP bushings are cost-effective for general use.
Maintenance Requirements:  Different bushing types have varying maintenance needs.  OIP bushings require regular oil testing and maintenance, while RIP and composite bushings offer reduced maintenance demands.
Mechanical Strength:  The mechanical strength of the bushing is crucial, especially for installations in areas prone to mechanical stress or vibrations.  Composite bushings offer superior mechanical robustness.
Cost Considerations:  While cost is always a factor, it should be balanced against the performance and longevity of the bushing.  Investing in high-quality bushings can lead to long-term savings through reduced maintenance and increased transformer reliability.

What is ESG Investing? What is the Best Way to Get Started?
ESG is the next big thing in investing. It offers real-world performance factors that help investors consider how companies impact the regional community when making investment decisions. They also develop strategic thinking to work toward sustainable development goals (SDGs). This post will discuss what matters in ESG investing and to get started.
What Is ESG Investing?
ESG investing means investors utilize the three types of compliance metrics of corporate impact metrics to screen the target companies’ stocks or funds. Moreover, corporations seek to attract such investments through responsible and sustainable business practices.
If investors want data on the beneficial effect of a company’s operations on the local community, they can use ESG services. They can get reports from a data-driven survey concerning the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance standards.
ESG audits enable informed investment decisions and portfolio management strategies. Investors can monitor whether a firm delivers its promised SDG metrics using such inspections. Likewise, consider the investors who invest their capital into the businesses that provide their employees with fair wages and respect.
How to Get Started with ESG Investing?
1| Specify Which Metrics Matter the Most to You
Investors must identify the ESG metrics, like forest preservation or tax transparency, before selecting a stock or asset class. They must also consider how all metrics have a unique significance in several industries. For example, carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission risks will differ across data centers, agricultural businesses, and construction firms.
If an organization wants to attract investors using sustainability performance, it can benefit from ESG consulting. Consultants understand the investors’ conceptualization of an ESG-first enterprise of investors and how companies can work towards improving their operations to fulfill them.
2| Determine Realistic Goals
Depending on the scope of the energy transition, adopting greener resources and production technologies can financially burden a business at the initial stage. So, investors, regulators, and entrepreneurs must use real-world data to estimate the progress rate of compliance improvement initiatives.
An organization or exchange-traded fund (ETF) can fail to retain investors if the compliance milestones remain distant. Accordingly, administrators involved in regulatory policy changes that can impact an industry’s ESG dynamics must consider how long the corporate world will need to modify its operations.
3| Mitigate Greenwashing Risks
Companies might advertise their brand as “eco-friendly” or socially responsible. However, investors must watch out for the greenwashing attempts. Greenwashing refers to magnifying a company’s sustainability commitments with no on-ground implementation.
An enterprise might declare it opposes discriminatory practices while showing inaction when an employee experiences workplace harassment. Another example can be an energy distributor not reducing its usage of coal and petroleum derivatives as fuel.
Therefore, investors and fund managers must cross-verify the “green claims” that a target company makes during press releases or marketing campaigns.
4| Get ESG Ratings Using Multiple Frameworks
To test the legitimacy of a corporation’s SDG commitments, a rating mechanism based on multi-variate performance analytics can help in ESG investing. Today, many sustainability accounting frameworks exist. For example, the global reporting initiative (GRI) allows sectorial modules.
Each GRI criterion addresses a family of interdependent services and products. So, an agricultural business will use a separate GRI standard, differing from the modules used in technology, finance, and manufacturing firms.
How can investors get started with ESG score comparisons? Some online databases offer preliminary insights into how different brands and ETFs compete in this space. However, more extensive data becomes available through paid platforms or experienced consultants.
Conclusion
ESG criteria will empower investors to evaluate the ecological or social risks associated with how an enterprise handles its operations. Fund managers and similar financial institutions can gain a more objective outlook on stock screening using industry-relevant assistance.
Furthermore, combating the greenwashing risks will be challenging if you are a sustainability investor, but extensive analytical models will come to your rescue. Finally, investors must refer to multiple sustainability accounting frameworks or databases to check a firm’s compliance ratings. This approach is how you get started with ESG investing.
Nevertheless, manual inspection is time-consuming, and ESG ratings keep changing due to mergers and new projects. So, collaborating with data partners capable of automating compliance tracking, controversy analytics, and carbon credit assessments is vital.
