Same thing with physics. You want to do anything with physics? You need a master's and PhD. Help someone else do their research? PhD. Help someone in the lab? Five years experience with the specific lab equipment for each advertised job. "Just go teach", you need a teaching degree. Science communication? No one will take you unless you have a journalism degree. "What if you just did other sciences, you did a science degree". Water quality? Chemical testing? Environmental science? You need to have studied that exact topic as a major to get those jobs. "Surely the maths you learnt in physics can go towards getting a job as a data scientist or something?" Yeah so, they've started a new degree all for the management and manipulation of data.
They said getting a degree will help us get a job but to get one is so difficult I'm beginning to think something has changed in the job market environment and it no longer supports us.
