Information
Harold Gilman 1916
Mrs Mounter
Harold Gilman was a post-impressionist, he loved patterns and while he still showed the big colours and real people (this was his housekeeper) of classic impressionism, the brush strokes were much smaller and neater, more a return to the smoother brush work common in naturalism and earlier works.

A very interesting book from 1965 published by Little, Brown and Company. 'A Chamber of Horrors unlocked by John Hadfield'. The volume contains important examples of grotesque literature and art from some of the greatest names in the field. Lovecraft's work does not appear, but several of the authors discussed in his, SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE, are featured. THE YELLOW WALLPAPER, a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is included along with various illustrations and artworks representing macabre themes. Gilman of course was an important surname featured in several of HPL's tales. Gilman is a common and important name in New England history, so it is doubtful that Ms. Gilman's last name was particularly or primarily an inspiration for Lovecraft using it. I have no evidence that there were any Gilmans in HPL's family tree, or among the noted citizens of Providence, RI. (Exhibit 277)
