Note
i'm designing a character based on mythical salamanders and want to spice up their look a little bit, may we get some newts and salamanders with fun appearances or unique adaptation? the first ones to come to mind are things like sirens, olms, mudpuppies, ribbed newts, and giant salamanders, but i'd love to learn about some more funky amphibians!
Might I suggest some of the following salamanders...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia), family Sirenidae, found in freshwater habitats in the SE United States, lower midwest, and NW Mexico
This eel-like aquatic salamander retains its gills. They only have 2 tiny front limbs.
They grow to a length of up to 69 cm (27 in).

Three-toed Amphiuma (Amphiuma tridactylum), family Amphiumidae, found in the SE United States
Amphiumas are large eel-like aquatic salamanders. The three-toed can grow up to 41 inches long. It has 4 tiny legs with 3 toes on each limb.

Red-tailed Knobby Newt aka Kweichow Crocodile Newt (Tylototriton kweichowensis), family Salamandridae, endemic to NE Yunnan, China
Poisonous.
Some species within this genus are capable of poking the tips of their ribs through the orange bumps on the back, which secrete poison. The ribs can effectively become venomous spines that can puncture the potential predator’s skin!

Jackson’s Climbing Salamander (Bolitoglossa jacksoni), family Plethodontidae, endemic to Guatemala
CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
This species had not been seen since 1975, but was refound in 2017.

Arboreal Salamander (Aneides lugubris), family Plethodontidae, Pinnacles National Park, California, USA
Arboreal, these salamanders have prehensile tails, and will use their limbs to glide or “parachute” from trees, if they need to.
They can deliver a nasty bite.
