Ngl I don't particularly want to get into the animation industry since it looks so stressful and too much for me, but part of me wants to get into it JUST to make animated shows of my favourite books series.
Like, could you imagine this fluid animated battle scene of Xingyin where she's battling demon realm soldiers with the Jade Dragon Bow, stylised sky-fire raining down and using camera angles to accentuate her skill and technique with the bow??? Or a slow motion scene of Lovisa walking through the snow as she wonders what to do about her parents and her growing suspicions?? Katsa moving in the shadows as she works alongside Giddon??
The art direction that could be done for designing the cities and towns?? Like could you imagine Graceling, Winterkeep, Daughter of the Moon Goddess, etc all getting the Castlevania treatment with beautiful art and cinematography??
It'd be so cool...

I heard you’re reading the graceling series? Which one are you on and do you like them? I’m on winterkeep (when I eventually get to it)
Im on winterkeep as well! Tbh im not entirely sure how I feel. They just seem really... long? For not much happening. Bitterblues def been my favorite so far! :)
#Theres also just some weird stuff#Like in fire the king idk his name and mila#Why. Why did the author do that.#And i think the series is heading towards a giddon/bitterblue relationship with i dont like too much either#Hes like 8 years older than her and it just feels more like a sibling dynamic ya know?#There are some things i like though!!#Katsa and po are very fun#Absolutely unhinged couple in the best way possible#And saf my beloved <3 complete loser#Love that his grace was slightly hyped up to be some big reveal and then it was like 'lol he can give good dreams'#My least favorite book has def been fire#For one i just. Didnt care much about any of the characters#And after about 300 pages fires problems just became a bit repetitive? If you get what i mean#It got interesting in the last few chapters#But that thing did not have to be like 600 pages#Ig it didnt help that my hopes were high for it#Everything i saw online was like 'omg fire absolitely ripped my heart out' and 'better than the first book'#And maybe its just me but i just? Didnt have much of a reaction to it?#Anyway i would love to know your thoughts on the series!#Im about 60 pages into winterkeep and its fun so far

“What gives Southern music its distinctive sound is it’s combination of music from the British Isles with the music from Africa.” D. Holt Brief Interview with Rhiannon Giddens on origins of the banjo as a plantation instrument, minstrel shows as the foundation for Broadway, and two songs performed.
One day in my cross-cultural psychology class at my HCBU my (Black) professor got into a mild disagreement with a (Black) student (and later the class lol) about Black Americans not liking country music. My professes let the student know bluegrass has its roots and creation in African music, so we should be proud of it. The student said nah. He just don’t like and doesn’t ever want to listen to bluegrass or country shit. Most of the class agreed that they too weren’t interested in country aka White Pride music. I, as someone who had been listening to country and bluegrass since middle school, remained silent. Class went on, and I think it ended well for everyone. Days and class discussions like this were normal. I love this interview.as Giddens is not only talented in her craft, but in a way shares how Black people have a right to claim, perform, and enjoy country and bluegrass music. It’s our pride and history just as much as we can claim hip-hop, rap, jazz, and the blues. In my household I was the only one who watched GAC and CMT, and listened to Backporch (Bluegrass) Music on weekend NPR. Aaaand, my family hated it LOL When I travel and feel homesick I listen to 1) Black gospel, and 2) country and bluegrass and 3) a reggae rendition of “Take Me Home Country Road” until I’ve bawled enough.
Besides the lovely art of personal storytelling country and bluegrass have, there’s just something unpretentious, gritty, deep, sweet, warming and comforting hearing someone sing about lives native to where you live. I can relate to a lot of small details and I like the pride that’s there. It always saddens me to know bluegrass, folk, and country aren’t as well-listened/or liked in the Black community and even more that the genres are labeled/monopolized as “White culture” when the core elements are muuuuch more multicultural/Black than many want to admit. or know
Hopefully the future will have more BPOC embracing these genres as they are our part of our proud and diverse history, too =)

I haven't finished the re-read yet but in the beginning of the book it struck me how katsa was portrayed as so incredibly disinterested in everything she "should" be interested in; doesn't care about her clothes, hates her hair, doesn't like baths and doesnt care if she's dirty, doesn't care what her living space looks like but thinks the bathroom is practical, doesn't want to fall in love and marry anyone. It feels like this is how Katsa views herself. I've read this book already so this didn't bother me, but I didn't remember the details in the book but I did think about how limiting it felt, like she was stuck in a world where she was "wrong". But she isn't. As the story progresses Katsa does fall in love (and she could very well marry him without anything changing in their relationship but whatever and I can't remember if they marry or not but I have a hunch) because she finds someone who actually attracts her, we find out more about what she finda visually appealing in her environment like how she likes the forests and mountains, she seems to love baths especially in cold water, she does indeed appreciate being clean, and the problem she had with baths were all related to her hair being hard to take care of, doesn't hate her hair just finds it extremely impractical, and she just doesn't care to wear dresses because she's not interested in those events.
She's portrayed in the beginning as just not caring about things like that. Giddon is very handsome, but Katsa doesn't care about beauty. But she does care because she thinks Po is handsome! Katsa lives in a castle but she doesn't care, she could live in a dirty old hut for all she cares.. except she loves the view from Pos humble castle ?? just cause she doesn't care for the things she grew up with doesn't mean she would never care for any kind of beauty. If she built her own house would she not care? maybe at the beginning of the book. At the end, she would choose a nice location and the decorations that she thinks are nice
She's discovering what she likes instead of being told by others what she should like. Just like all of us do when we turn into adults!

unfair that Giddon appears in three books of the series because my ranking of love interests is getting more and more biased towards him and it's making the 17 y/o Brigan lover in me very miffed

Seasparrow by Kristin Cashore
"'I feel a deep sadness,' he said, switching languages, 'except there's a sweetness to it. It's almost like a yearning. I don't want to be there or ever feel anything like that again, ever. I don't want to be hungry, frostbitten, or scared. I want to be here right now, having this life. But that experience is a part of me now, and it would hurt if someone tried to take it away. I would tear apart.'"
Year Read: 2025
Rating: 4/5
Thoughts: [tw: animal death] I didn't like this quite as much as Winterkeep, but I think it's a credit to Cashore's writing that I'm still so invested in this world, long after I've realized fantasy isn't really for me. (Not her fault, but there's a glaring production error in my book: the entire thing is crooked. The top margins are thinner than the bottom margins, and it's distracting as hell.) It's a little slow to start, and I struggled a bit to get into Hava's perspective, specifically in her tendency to list things I don't care about. It kicks up around a hundred pages though, and I came to love her. Though she's distant and acerbic, she's all heart deep down, and also perhaps the most traumatized of all the characters by King Leck. I love the way that the consequences of his rule extend far past his lifetime, and many of the characters are still coming to terms with those.
It gets a little grim after the ship wrecks. Seasparrow seems to be trying to recall some of the adventure/survivalist aspects of Graceling while maintaining the social/political issues of Bitterblue and Winterkeep. For the most part, it works, but without Katsa and her Grace, the characters mostly just suffer (there's also a very sad animal death). It's a good arc for Hava overall, though, and we have the sense that she's changed a great deal over the course of the novel. There are also some fun cameos by Katsa, Po, Fire, Raffin, and Bann, as well as continued development on Bitterblue and Giddon. After coming to love them in Winterkeep, I also absolutely adored all the blue foxes.
The novel develops a number of themes, such as the ethical considerations of weapons of mass destruction and the question of what we're made of: what is a person's essential parts, and is it possible for those to be altered by events or time? Naturally, it also spends a great deal of time dealing with trauma, both past and present, and I like the conclusions it comes to: that even though we'd prefer never to revisit our trauma it is, nevertheless, an essential part of who we are. I've never had a book put it in such clear and relatable terms for me. Like all Graceling Realm books, it's relevant, well-drawn, and more hopeful than not. I highly recommend the series as a whole for fantasy lovers.

Rhiannon Giddons performing “American Tune” with Paul Simon. ____________________________ American Tune Songwriter: Paul Simon
Many's the time I've been mistaken And many times confused Yes, and I've often felt forsaken And certainly misused But I'm all right, I'm all right I'm just weary to my bones Still, you don't expect to be Bright and bon vivant So far away from home, so far away from home
And I don't know a soul who's not been battered I don't have a friend who feels at ease I don't know a dream that's not been shattered or driven to its knees But it's all right, it's all right For we've lived so well so long Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on I wonder what's gone wrong I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly And looking back down at me Smiled reassuringly And I dreamed I was flying And high up above my eyes could clearly see The Statue of Liberty Sailing away to sea And I dreamed I was flying
We come on the ship they call the Mayflower We come on the ship that sailed the moon We come in the age's most uncertain hour and sing an American tune But it's all right, it's all right You can't be forever blessed Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day And I'm trying to get some rest That's all, I'm trying to get some rest

How do you feel about the whole Gideon x Bitterblue thing going on in Winterkeep? I've been apprehensive to read anything past Bitterblue because of it.
Didn't bother me. It's a few years down the line, Bitterblue has had multiple romantic relationships with other people, is fully capable of existing on her own, and is a beloved queen whose advisors and people are fully capable of and willing to do murder if she's actually hurt.
Like. Halva can and will cut a bitch, and the aforementioned bitch will not see it coming or going.
But mostly it's that Bitterblue clearly has a life outside of Giddon and he's also explicitly made a decision to take a supportive/caring role rather than any kind of authority outside of what Bitterblue gives him, and he's actually shown to be doing that rather than just giving lip service.
