2023 in television
Last year, I spent a third of the year sick, a third of it overextending myself, and a third of it put upon by a swarm of little indignities that would have been nothing on their own but, all together, oooh boy. Throughout it all, I watched a lot of television.
These are the three TV-viewing experiences that defined the year for me:
Call My Agent!
I've watched the first season of Call My Agent! many times, but the occasion of having covid, food poisoning, and strep back-to-back in the spring presented me with the opportunity to take in the whole series. It took me away! I loved every minute of it, even the ones that baffled me (it is the sort of show I wish terribly had no stakes, but it does have stakes, and luckily I was maximally aware of my powerlessness while they happened to me, so I did not get as upset as I might have if I watched it in fighting shape and gotten FURIOUS about Gabriel and Sofia!!!). I hope I can watch it again someday but I need to put some distance between myself and everything that I associate with that time because it was BRUTAL.
American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Something true about me: I loved The People vs. OJ Simpson and I rewatch Impeachment on a regular basis. I was saving The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and since there was no point throughout the year when I did not need a little treat, I finally watched this. It was not what I was expecting! And for that, I respect it in a way that I do not necessarily respect every property associated with the creator of this series. I think the critique of American-society-as-hostile-to-queer-lives, which enabled most of the victims to be shunted into the killer's path, was lost—I'd say substantially lost—but it is a gnarly, feel-bad masterpiece and feels almost void of the pandering that comprises a lot of other TV in its entirety.
Fellow Travelers
Finishing Fellow Travelers was a pyrrhic victory. I maintain that the sex scenes are a work of art, and it comes close to being worth watching on their strength alone, which is of real significance. But it is mostly horrifying to watch fine actors caught in the bear trap of a miserable script. Every line is agony (I haven't read the source material yet but I have a feeling that the agony is not wholly the result of adaptational accommodations). It is a bummer but no surprise at all that there is no parsing for contemporary audiences what the red scare was really about (although airing headcannon about McCarthy—a choice so wild, I might respect it). Between this and Maestro, I am going to need someone to do right by Matt Bomer.
(For the record, the second season of Yellowjackets was my favorite television event of 2023, but it was one of pure pleasure and, thus, not characteristic of 2023, hence its exclusion here.)

How Broadway’s ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ Star Darren Criss Makes Robots Human by Embracing the ‘Beep-o-Boop-Bop’
In his latest Broadway project, Emmy winner Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) and his co-star, Helen J. Shen, play retired, robotic “helperbots” in the near-future love story “Maybe Happy Ending.” And although it might seem like a challenge to find the emotion in an android, Criss is finding that more he plays with the artifice of it, the more relatable his robot becomes.
“The trepidation I had was: Well, how do we do this without it being too cartoony? You know, like ‘beep-o-boop-bop,’ for lack of a better description,” Criss said in a conversation with Shen on the latest episode of “Stagecraft,” Variety’s theater podcast. “The irony of all this is that the more ‘cartoony’ — the more you lean into this heightened beep-o-boop-bop — the more believable it is. … I’m almost playing this commedia dell’arte character. There’s a level of theatricality that exists within these robots that actually helps us understand the story quicker.”
“The wonderment is something that I’m really resonating with in both of these characters,” Shen added. “They’re living in these helperbot yards and they have been isolated for decades, so to be able to connect with each other, connect with the world, and see that the world is bigger than just this one window is something that I feel like we all can relate to.”
Written by the crosscultural duo of the Korean writer Hue Park and his American collaborator Will Aronson, “Maybe Happy Ending” first premiered in Korean in Seoul, where the show has become a successful staple since it premiered in 2016. Now the musical has arrived Stateside — in an English language version also by Aronson and Park — in a technologically ambitious staging featuring intricate projections and a highly mobile, automated set.
But both Criss and Shen said that the high-tech surroundings and A.I. protagonists are just the means to telling a story about love and loss in an accessible way. “They’ve made this about robots, but obviously it’s a very, very human story,” Criss said.

Unrelated to MASH, but outside of BJ, what is your favorite character that Mike has done? You don't have to consider the movie/show he was in to be good, but like what other character(s) that he's played do you like the most?
Bard, you are such a joy for asking me this. You know me. I love any and all opportunities to ramble on and on about Mike and anything he has ever done outside of MASH.
For those of you who don't know, Mike Farrell is absolutely my favorite "celebrity," and has been since... forever. I've followed his career for years and years and years and I've seen probably 93% of the things he has a credit for. There's a few items that I've never been able to get my hands on, but slowly but surely I will. ANYWAY.
I have a few that I just love him in.
1.) Al Socconis in The Bill Cosby Show. He's not even in this for very long, but he really shines when he does comedy. Plus LOOK AT HIM?
2.) Jack in "Love and the Hot Spell" (Love, American Style). HOLY SHIT IS HE FUNNY IN THIS. Honestly, Mike really shines in comedy. This is just... it's so funny.
3.) Jonah Malcom in "Persona" (Law and Order SVU). He's the sweetest old man in this episode, and ugh. Breaks my heart.
4.) Finally, Lee Miglin in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Admittedly, I have only watched this twice because... it hurts too much. It's not for the faint of heart. I had no idea about this story, and when I heard Mike was in it - I just...latched on. I watched because I love Mike and watched anything he was in. I was not prepared, but he's so good in it. It's one of the only things he's been in (since MASH) that he has made me cry in. I cried at Providence, but that's from laughter and secondhand embarrassment so it doesn't count.
#bardengarde#mike farrell#honestly just watch his entire imdb#there's some bangers and some that make you go ??? really???#but it's all okay

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: delusions of grandeur & an incredible sense of entitlement land Andrew Cunanan on the FBI’s most wanted list. His self destructive descent from freeloader to spree killer is chronicled perfectly in Ryan Murphy’s American crime story!
