I might be onto nothing here but I’m going insane over canon Kou being so consumed with saving everybody that his selflessness leaves him useless, unable to accomplish any of the things he wants vs. Kou in the AUs seemingly finding happiness AND actually being able to save the one he loves through selfishness

In the HKOTO au, Kou literally could not have given less of a fuck what happened to the rest of the opera house; he left them all there to deal with the Phantoms while he and Mitsuba ran away together. He saved Mitsuba (the one thing he’s never been able to do in canon) and found true happiness for himself (the one thing he subconsciously wants in canon) through being selfish. Not to mention he had to hurt Mitsuba in order to keep him safe

Hell, I’ll even include the Ghost Hotel in this. Kou’s shown to be living his best life at the expense of Mitsuba who gets partially cannibalized on full moons. Once again, he chooses to live selfishly and ends up happy

I think my point here is that Kou’s inability to do anything progressive in canon, be it for himself or his friends, comes from him repressing his own needs. This was all but outright stated in the Red House arc so idk if I’d call it a hot take but yeah. Let that kid be selfish

Digital illustration work as of recent! Ghost hotel shenanigans!

The general plot is Cassidy (pictured above) recently moved to a new part of town, framed by a creepy old manor that has laid abandoned. One day, while trying to figure out why her attic door won’t open, she finds a skeleton key that doesn’t seem to work anywhere. She finds out it’s a key to the manor, and using it she enters a dingy, but far less abandoned, hotel!
