soljae | one shot, established relationship, death, grief | prompt: dead
Sol gripped onto her mother's hand with an iron grip, so tight her knuckles turned as white as the snow that dotted the ground. At her mother's other side, Geum was sniffling from a cold that had been going on for months. It certainly wouldn't go away now.
Sol's eyes began to water as her gaze flitted to the ground. It was wrong to cry when the chief mourner was talking, she should be focusing, but…
God, why couldn't Geum be the chief mourner as that was his role as the oldest son and only grandson?! Why did it have to an uncle that didn't know halmeoni like they did? Why couldn't Geum be strong for once?!
Hot tears dripped down onto the snowy carpet as their uncle droned on about Jung Malja.
Maybe it was silly, but Sol believed halmeoni would never die. She was too wise, too all-knowing, too omnipresent to ever pass on to the next phase. Death had been beneath her. Dementia, as awful as it was, had allowed their grandmother to live in multiple time periods all at once. She was nineteen and thirty and eighty-five at the same time. She was grandmother and friend and prophet and lover. The mere concept of death would wither away in front of halmeoni. That was what Sol thought.
And yet.
JUNG MAL-JA
BELOVED DAUGHTER, SISTER, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER & MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY
1929 - 2024
Angry at her emotions getting the best of her, Sol's gloved hand rubbed at her cheek. Tears and foundation were smeared along the fabric. Sol huffed.
Mom squeezed her hand, tightening the grip even more. "No comments," she muttered, stern, her face schooled into a cold expression.
Someone looking in on the outside wouldn't be able to tell that mom just lost her own mother. But Sol knew how devastated she felt. For the past week that she has been living at home, she heard her mother cry herself to sleep each night.
The uncle finished his lame, uninspired speech and gestured at everyone to crouch down and bow. Regular funerals happened inside, but Malja was an adventurer at heart. It wouldn't have made sense to do it inside.
Sol sunk to her knees with no complaints then. Behind her, she felt Sunjae do the same. His dark boots crunched under his weight, his thick wool coat pooling around him. Everyone bowed twice.
And then it just… ended. The funeral guests thanked and expressed their condolences to the chief mourner. They scurried to the small bistro at the top of the dunes. They rented it out for the day. Sunjae pulled some strings.
Finally, Geum and Hyun-Joo moved. Geum was slobbering into a handkerchief as Hyun-Joo dragged him along.
"Sol," Mom uttered. "My hand."
"Oh," she croaked out. "Right." Sol let go, yet the imprint of her mother's hand still lingered.
Mom's lips tutted as she noticed Sol's face. With a swipe of her hand, she wiped away the remaining wetness. "We've cried for a week now."
Sol nodded, swallowing the bile in her throat. "Yes."
Mom's gaze drifted to the man behind Sol. "You make sure she doesn't freeze, yeah?"
"Of course, jangmo." Sunjae's voice was low and solemn.
Mom followed the rest of the funeral party, her footsteps the final pair on the snowy patch of beach. Sol watched her go. More tears streamed down her cheeks. She couldn't help it. She cried for a week and Sol knew she would cry many more. That was where she differed from her family. Maybe because she and halmeoni were the only ones that really knew what happened to Sol. Sol and Sunjae.
"Sol-ah…" Sunjae whispered. He stepped beside her and curled an arm around her shoulder. Just like that, the tears turned into sobs. "Sol-ah… she's still with you."
"She's gone," Sol whimpered. Burrowing her face into his chest, she clung onto his coat and allowed him to carry all her weight. Her heart felt heavy.
"You really think Jung Malja isn't living in another timeline? Meeting your grandfather, moving to Seoul, seeing you get born?" Sunjae soothed. He caressed her hair, slow and tender. "She's not gone. People… memories… never leave, even after death."
Looking up, she saw he was already fixed on her. He always was. A wry smile ticked on his lips. "She's here."
Sol swallowed away another batch of tears, humming. "She's here," she repeated. "Thank you for reminding me."
Sunjae kissed her forehead in response. "What do you want to do? Stay out here for a bit longer, or…?"
"Let's join the others." She took a steadying breath and grabbed his hand. "I could use a coffee. Do I look okay?"
Sunjae bit his lip as he assessed her. Then, almost bashful as though not her husband of several years, did he rub his thumb under her eyes. "You've got some, uh, mascara, but…"
For the first time today, Sol let out a laugh. "That's okay."

My old Sageuk script, revised! ----- Madam Jung : Where is Yoo-hwa? She should have been here by afternoon. Myeong Ae: She's in the palace today I think the Prince has taken a liking to her. Madam Jung : I see. I hope she doesn't get swayed by the Prince to stay at the court. Mi Hee : Why? If the Prince likes her, she might receive a lot of money. And maybe she will become his concubine! Madam Jung : Not every gisaeng's path leads to the court. Yoo-hwa is too naive to get into politics, and is too skilled to be an entertainment to the Royal family. Jin Yi : I've heard that the Consort Hee of the Jang family is a very greedy woman. Yoo-hwa would suffer a lot if she gets in that woman's way. As someone who has seen her since she was young, I am worried. Jang Sook : Consorts are always greedy. I don't understand why. The court is splitting like a watermelon, the nation is being attacked on the shores, and these women give birth to four of five babies for what? For the land they receive? For their son to be the next king? So they can be the Queen Dowager and order their own son and the court around? Madam Jung : (raises hand) We are no one to judge someone else's situation and decisions in life. All we can do is live with it and give the children an example of how to,nor how not to, lead life.
Madam Jung : Cheon-geum-ah? Cheon-geum : Yes, mother 네, 어머님 Madam Jung : You are the closest to the age of 16 among the training gisaengs. Am I right? Cheon-geum : True, mother. Madam Jung : Then, have you decided on a gisaeng name yet? Cheon-geum : No, mother. Madam Jung : Why so, when I have reminded you mamy times? Cheon-geum : (stutters slightly, in a quieter voice) I- I intend not to take on a gisaeng name, mother. Wol-hyang : (looks at Eui-hye with a look of worry) Madam Jung : May I know the reason? Cheon-geum : (voice becoming more firm) My mother gave me a name that I think is fitting to me. I want to be a heavenly lyre player even when I'm a gisaeng. Please understand this young girl's wish, mother. Soon-ryeon : (leans over to Wol-hyang and whispers) when is her birthday? In how many months? Wol-hyang : ( noticing that Madam Jung jas noticed Soonryeon whispering, signals with her hand, 2 fingers. SR gives a look of "well, whatever" and continues eating.) Madam Jung : (slightly angry) So you think these reasons give you the freedom that your friends don't have? What makes you think you have a choice? Cheon-geum : (quiet but firm) None of the other girls were born to a gisaeng and raised to be one. I have never known anything else but being a gisaeng. How can I change my name? Madam Jung : (breathes in sharply) Listen here, child... Mi-hee : (signals to Madam Jung to let her deal with it) Cheon-geum-ah, think again. All of us have gisaeng names. Hwa-myeong : I am also the daughter of a gisaeng. I know that you're proud of your name, but I'm sure your mother would appreciate it if you followed the tradition. Myeong-ae : ... it is, in the end, what she did too. It wouldn't be wrong to do so. Hwa-myeong : You think it would be disrespectful to your mother, isn't it? Cheon-geum : (nods timidly) Mi-hee : I can assure you, it isn't. In fact, I'm sure your mother, if she were here, would tell you to leave your pride behind and do the same as all your seniors, and be a honourable gisaeng. You understand? Cheon-geum : (lowers her head at the sudden interjection of the seniors, embarrassed) I understand. I will think about it. Madam Jung : Lift your head up. I will give you time until the day before your 17th birthday. Have you understood? Cheon-geum : Yes, mother.
Jang Sook : Madam, isn't it commonplace to name the girls as soon as they enter the gyobang? Madam Jung : You are right, Mrs. Jang. But I feel like a child should be able to enjoy her name before having it taken away from her. Jin-yi : This gyobang really seems like the only one in the kingdom to do so. Jang Sook : I have heard of another gyobang in the Pyongyang region, where they allow the girls to choose which field they study in, isn't that good too, madam? Madam Jung : I disagree with that. I know that some of the best gisaengs especially in dancing and singing have come from that gyobang, but the gisaengs there lack an all-round education. A gisaeng should be able to do anything. Myeong-ae : I agree, mother. There is no reason a gisaeng who excels at poetry would also excel at dancing. Soon-ryeon, Eui-hye and Hwa-jung : (look at Wol-hyang with a smile, almost as if taunting her for her two left feet. Wol-hyang lets out a sigh and stuffs her mouth with rice) Mi-hee : (notices Wol-hyang, smiles) Mi-soon-ah (referring to Myeong-ae by her gisaeng name) , to realise you're wrong, you don't need to look far. Wol-hyang : (even more embarrassed, she cowers and keeps on stuffing rice into her mouth) Mi-hee : I'm sitting right here, am I not, mother? Wol-hyang : (surprised at the sudden relevation, looks up) Madam Jung : I remember. Mi-hee : (continues) There were days I practiced until my legs bruised, and I thought of Yoo-hwa (Yi-rin's gisaeng name) and cried, because I wasn't even as good as her toenail when it came to dancing. Myeong-ae : (laughs) And weren't there days I made the floor wet with my tears, as my voice cracked at all the songs, Geum-wol? Hwa-myeong : I remember crying while playing the drums - I hit my head with a drumstick. (laughter erupts across the room) . I got a big red boil on my head like an egg. It's practice, practice and again practice, that made us to be as skilled as we are. (turns to Wolhyang) There's no need to worry at all. If there is a will, there is a way. (Wolhyang : bends her head, half in shame, half in relief. The seniors and Madam Jung smile, and everyone continues eating)

3 K-drama moments (January edition)
1. Kim Hae-sook expressing her rage at a young Japanese officer in full satoori and banmal in Gyeongseong Creature. Until this point she has been a capable right hand to Park Seo-joon, restrained, deadly efficient and completely unshakeable. But long-simmering fears and frustrations are boiling over everywhere in Gyeongseong and elsewhere, resulting in this atypical, shocking conversation with a junior officer who sympathises with them but cannot bridge the colonial gap. Language is so significant in this genre, and it’s so visceral when Kim Hae-sook openly vents to this man in her own language, in her own dialect.
Gyeongseong Creature is a pretty dark take on human experimentation, the last gasp of colonial horrors in a dying empire and the endurance of community. Park Seo-joon (and Han So-hee to a lesser extent) have to be the heroes; nonetheless the story understands that liberation is won not by strong-jawed men who talk pretty, but by community, by ordinary people doing extraordinary things together.
Kdrama has a wealth of supporting actors and it's no different here, with Jo Han-cheol, Kang Mal-geum, the aforementioned Kim Hae-sook, Claudia Kim and lovely, lovely Kim Yoon-woo in an affecting subplot (you might have seen him as Ryang Eum in My Dearest). Hate that Netflix made this one a cliffhanger, but they got me. Now, please give us a grown up romance with Jo Han-cheol in it. Our man's earned it.
2. Jung Jin-young’s vividly joyous sex life with his partner played by Yang Mal-bok in LTNS. The astonishing tenderness of their meeting, their love story and the joy he has brought to her arid, parched life are all so well-done that I had a lump in my throat throughout the episode.
This show took atypical love and affair stories, the sort we tend to mock or criticise - the plain girl sleeping with the married colleague, the fiftysomethings rediscovering their zest for life in each other’s bodies, the married lipstick lesbian who keeps coming back into her ex’s life - and offered so much kindness and love in the writing and the framing of those stories. @drivingsideways remarked that it was so different from anything Kdrama has given us, and that is completely correct.
Esom and Ahn Jae-hong were beyond excellent as a troubled couple that maybe shouldn't have married all those years ago - people who were maybe always a little too different, and then papered over their differences with the routines of matrimony. I suspect this was all too real to appeal to the general audience and I don't think this is going to be nomination-heavy. But it deserves to be.
3. Hwa-rok running from the handsome Officer Jeong in the brilliantly written The Matchmakers. The youngest sister in the famously unmarried trio of Namsan, Hwa-rok is a very relatable babe who really wants to get married! Get a husband! Have SEX! - and manifests this through her popular erotica series. The bond between Hwa-rok and the shy, upright officer whose first introduction to her is all the erotica she writes is one of the most adorable plots on this incredibly cute show.
I have several feelings about The Matchmakers, namely that it is the rare romance I respect despite the minimal chemistry between the leads. The writing was top-notch and the lead acting didn't quite live up to it - this is not a criticism of Cho Yi-hyun or Rowoon, but rather a testament to the sheer wealth of talent in Kdrama and how accustomed we've become to actors elevating material. Rowoon surprisingly grew on me in this, with his physicality and his looks somehow making Gyeongwoonjae indelible despite his iPhone-knowing face. I might do a separate post on this yet, but it was absolutely worth the watch, and all of you were right, especially @haraxvati who bravely advocated for Rowoon's talents.

Immortal Being that Still Somehow has Parent Issues: Myul Mang/Doom (Doom at your Service) Lee Yeon & Lee Rang (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Jeong Gu-won (My Demon)
Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal, alive parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids) Baek Hyun-woo (Queen of Tears, nothing wrong with them out of the ordinary and they are in the drama a significant amount.) Ha Eun-gyeol (Twinkling Watermelon, very loving parents and the deafness and their reliance on him is not anyone's fault)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned. ***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. ****This character is tricky because he was explicitly raised as an orphan by his grandma, his father didn't sign his birth certificate (Korean equivalent of this), and he's registered as the child of his grandmother, not his actual mom. His grandma is dead by the beginning of the series and he is living alone without family, so I think he counts as an orphan.
Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness
#kdramas#so many orphans#you would think that Korean children never have parents who make it to 60#if they manage to be alive they are the worst

I'm dying to know the conversation that happened between this scene, when Dong-sik is laying out the reasons why Han Ki-hwan could be guilty and Joo-won doesn't want to hear it:
and this scene, a little later in the episode when Dong-sik is clearly in the know about Joo-won investigating his father and they are working together again:
I'm imaging something like this:
Joo-won has spent hours staring at the photographs, dates, and details linking Han Ki-hwan, Do Hae-hwan, and Lee Chang-jin, hoping to find nothing more than coincidence to convince himself that Dong-sik's conclusions are wrong; but the longer he stares, the more a dreadful pictures comes into focus. One where his father has spent twenty years manipulating the police force for his own purposes and concealing a crime he may or may not be guilty of, but is definitely complicit in delaying justice for. He spends another hour staring at a glass of whiskey and his cell phone, his thumb hovering over Dong-sik's name in his contact list. When he finally clicks on it, he expects the line to ring and ring, Dong-sik keeping him waiting, playing his games, testing Joo-won's resilience. Instead, he picks up right away. Joo-won could have said a number of the things that have been echoing through his head since he left Dong-sik's basement , such as, "You could be right" or "He is my father but I can't ignore the evidence for the sake of family" Eventually, he just points out the fact that the last time Dong-sik was at his place and he cooked, their meal went unfinished; they should remedy that. When Dong-sik arrives the next afternoon, Joo-won is in the middle of cooking. From the kitchen, he watches as Dong-sik looks over the board Joo-won compiled linking all the players together. The old board, with Dong-sik's - and Min-jeong's and Lee Geum-hwa's - pictures is gone. While the oven does its job, Joo-won brings him a glass of wine. Neither of them are working today. The Chianti is dry and Joo-won's throat aches enough to regret the choice, no matter how well it pairs with the meal. "What we need," Dong-sik says, at length, "is a loose thread." "A thread?" "To pull on. The three of them together are a strong unit. But there's always a weak link." Joo-won has spent years wondering if he is the weak link in the Han family legacy, a fear that this situation is proving to be true. But Dong-sik is talking about Jung Cheol-mun, and despite yesterday's floundering questions, he bears no hesitation in resting all of their plans on Joo-won's future interactions with Han Ki-hwan. His trust, no matter how oppressed, is still somehow intact. Joo-won will have to contend with wrapping his mind around that fact later, after they've pulled every last thread they can find.

She's so tiny in his arms.
His manager is too funny 🤣. Always shading Sun Jae's love life. And where Sun Jae is, In Hyuk will call it home lmaooo.
Breakfast looks so good? This domestic ish is my jam. I loved it in Destined With You when Hong Jo would end up at Shin Yu's place.
Look at this lady trying to keep her man out of scandals while trying to never interact with him 🤣.
Okay, I absolutely get what we say when we call Sun Jae a loser and he's absolutely about to enter his loser era in this lifetime (I approve). But he's just a guy in love who doesn't try to stoically stomp it down, as most male leads do. So, is he a loser? Or refreshingly authentic?
"Why are you two acting crazy as a set this morning?" Gosh, this cast. I even like Madam CEO, she's a doll.
Sun Jae's dad does not know the meaning of a humble brag. As he should, his son is the gold standard. Get ready to witness your son chase this woman for the rest of their lives.
I love Jung Young-Joo, she's so beautiful. One of my fave ahjumma actresses.
Why did he come down the slide like that, I'm-
He would follow her anywhere if she led him by the hand.
I adore when he's scandalized by his own memories, that hand to the mouth in shock just tickles me.
Im Geum! You- well, maybe this balances the scales??
Bless you Tae Sung, you took care of the killer subplot and gave us an ENTIRE episode of fanservice.
The scene in the library!!! She's always turning him into her older brother LOL. But this is why they're so good in this rom com. She's just as much of a loser as he is 😂😂😂.
I could just watch a slice-of-life version of the families. I live for their family meetings. It's wonderful how much Sun Jae's dad loves him.
There goes my comfort show these past weeks. I truly enjoyed it all.

2022 roundup
Watched less tv this year than probably any other year in my life because I was mostly pregnant and queasy beyond belief, but here’s a roundup of the stuff I did manage to cram. Not only kdramas, though mostly that. (I’m probably forgetting some but these are all that come to mind rn.)
The Red Sleeve: Didn’t actually finish this because of the pain, but it was so well-made. Ambitious cinematography, great storytelling and acting. Lee Se-young really gave us the range; having only seen her poised and regal in The Crowned Clown before, I loved watching her goof off in between the angsty bits. A serve.
Hyena: I normally dislike law dramas, but the leads are so mesmerizing (and so attractive) that you root for them even when they do objectively evil work. Have never seen such palpable yearning between two characters. Jung Geum-ja is the Most.
Into the Ring: Goo Se-ra my beloved! I want more romances like this: haggard social worker and the social justice gremlin whose daily complaints he has to resolve. Enjoyed every second.
Rewatch of Kingdom and Ashin of the North: Just as brilliant as the first time around. Come on Netflix, now that HBO Max is collapsing in on itself, get with that blood and gore and get to work on season 3 already. I want to see Ashin go apeshit!!
Jodhaa Akbar: Seven months later and I still get tingly thinking about this romance. Akbar dueling Jodhaa to win her back, and showering her with jasmine petals mid-fight. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai both looking so hot it should be illegal. A soundtrack to make the sun rise even in the bleak midwinter. This was my first visit to Mughal India but not my last! (Thank you @rain-hat for the recs, you are a gift to tumblrkind!)
My Liberation Notes: Okay I was so into the first half that I cannot even tell you. It burrowed into the darkest, weariest part of me and lit a match. But I did not care for Mr. Gu’s backstory and the ensuing foray into the criminal underworld, and somewhere around there it lost its heart.
Love Between Fairy and Devil: Jam packed with tropes. A surprisingly touching and very entertaining fantasy for the Hades/Persephone girlies. Great visuals, too!
Alchemy of Souls: Speaking of great visuals! I will admit that I hop skipped my way through much of part 1. The world-building is claustrophobically boring, which is a shame because it is so charmingly costumed. I adore the premise of a villain body-swapping into a nobody. There is some good acting in this and there is also some very bad acting. I am upset with part 2 for filing the fangs off my darling Naksu, but I do admit that the dark fairytale vibe has got me hooked. (Evil mothers sewing golden thread into the bare skin of their daughters! Our hero tormented by the furies of hell! A marriage of convenience to the resident goth! I am eating it up by the spoonful.)
Stranger Things: I feel like I am in the minority here so this is probably on me, but I thought this was the least scary and also least emotionally engaging season. I think the problem horror-wise was Vecna and that they showed him too soon and too often in his campy monster makeup. All the Russia stuff was boring af, and I didn’t like that the kids were separated all season. Eddie was however a most delightful addition to the gang. Rest in power, babygirl.
First Love/Hatsukoi: I hate amnesia plots, and I don’t understand why the characters deal with it the way they do here, or why it is never resolved or even treated as something in need of resolving. However, the leads are delightful together and their chemistry is out of this world. Would happily have watched many, many more episodes of this. (I ragged on the color-coded families to my husband, before we realized we both wore the exact same shade of burgundy. So now I’ve decided that it’s cute and not weird at all.)
Things I didn’t finish, but might pick back up some day:
Business Proposal: Chaebol heirs are such a turn off that I couldn’t even finish it for my girls.
Bloody Heart: I only saw a few episodes of this because it was so difficult to find a good stream anywhere online. Goddamn Mouse gatekeeping Jang Hyuk from me!!
Under The Queen’s Umbrella: Too many princes.

Drama rec masterlist | Drama rant thread (beware of spoilers)
This drama is unsurprisingly a lot like its "prequel" which is, of course, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Which is both a good and a bad thing, because I like the original drama a lot, but it also means that I kept comparing the two. And honestly, the original is better if you ask me.
Both dramas have this thing where it's a comedy drama overall, but it has these really dark themes and scenes that just feel so out of place because they keep undermining it with something funny. The balance just isn't there for me - I had the same problem with Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, but I still feel that they handled it a bit better. A drama that handles that balance really well, though it may be hard to compare with these two, is Vincenzo. -> this does not mean it's a bad drama or anything, it is just not my thing.
Overall, it was a very decent drama. The actors all gave it their all, but sometimes the writing just didn't really hit what they were trying to. Some of the drama came off feeling almost two-dimensional, if that makes sense? It just never really got deep enough for me to actually truly care what happened to any of the characters, which doesn't really make for an amazing viewing experience.
And I can't talk about this drama, without talking about the shipping wars, because oh boy did it get heated at some points. The viewers who found Hee-sik boring (which... I can kind of see, but he's just as "stereotypical" of his character as any of the other characters in this drama, so by that logic all the characters are boring) started shipping Nam-soon with Shi-oh. And yes, these two did have pretty good chemistry on screen, but guys with giant red banners waving behind them just really aren't my thing. And while I did think that Nam-soon and Hee-sik were cute, their chemistry wasn't off the charts like you would want in a romance (neither was her chemistry with Shi-oh, just saying).
The single best scene in this drama was the cameo from Bong-soon and Min-hyuk. And that says a lot about this drama, I think.
In the end... this was a drama that did what it wanted - it copied and somewhat successfully made a second drama to the "classic" that was Bong-soon. It was generally cute and kinda fun, and I didn't have the worst time watching it. Did this drama need to be made? Not if you ask me. Does it need a second season / spin-off like they're teasing? Definitely not. Will I still give it a watch? Probably.

List of series about revenge, justice, revenge-justice and solving mysteries (Warning: Spoilers)
If you're as vindictive as I am but still like a happy ending, these maybe for you. (Don't worry, I've never actively tried to ruin someone's life irl...yet)
Also, if you're like me, once you get hooked on one genre or type of series/movie, you'll probably want to watch more similar items.
So, whether you want to kick back with a relaxing series about revenge/murder or you want to take notes for your own revenge, here's a list of series about revenge/solving mysteries that I've watched recently:
1. Taxi Driver (2021-) starring Lee Je-hoon, Kim Eui-sung, Pyo Ye-jin, Jang Hyuk-jin, Bae Yoo-ram
I mean, it's starring Lee Je-hoon. Need I say more? Ok fine. He's an ex-militant that had a loved one murdered. He groups together with like-minded people that seek revenge but for other people who are experiencing similar pain as they are. It's thrilling but also ridiculous, funny, goofy, and very satisfying. i.e. The good justice-seekers always win. I mean, what they're doing to get justice puts them in a gray area at best. But still better than the soulless that they go after.
2. Bulgasal: Immortal souls starring Lee Jin-wook, Kwon Nara, Lee Joon, Gong Seung-yeon, Jung Jin-young, Park Myung-shin, and Kim Woo-seok
I did a review for this once (with spoilers). I wouldn't say this is entirely about revenge per say but it's in the mix. Here's the review if you're interested: https://www.tumblr.com/nostalgiqueajamais/681321371629944832/bulgasal-on-netflix?source=share
3. The Untamed starring Xiao Zhan, Wang Yibo
Based on the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian's spirit is summoned 16 years after his death to seek revenge for the summoner. On his quest, he unravels the common enemy that was responsible for his own demise. The theme starts with revenge but it's so much more than that. If you love slow-burn love and chemistry bursting through the screen without uttering a single word, this is for you.
4. Birth of a beauty starring Han Ye-seul, Joo Sang-wook, Jung Gyu-woon, Wang Ji-hye and Ha Jae-Sook
Sa Geum-ra, played by Ha Jae-Sook, is kindhearted and overweight (this is a plot point) housewife that's married to Jung Gyu-woon's character, Kang Joon. The latter is cheating on the former with Wang Ji-Hye's character. Long story short, she loses weight to win back her husband's affections but ends up seeking revenge because... find out for yourself. It's funny, ridiculous and goofy and the plot kept me at the edge of my seat. The series does drag a little during the last three or so episodes. The plot is mainly based on revenge, infidelity, and fat-shaming. As someone who grew up being dubbed "fat," "pig" etc. even when I wasn't and later when I eventually was, Sa Geum-ra's pain of feeling unlovable simply because of her size was something I related to greatly. Which leads me to my next recommendation:
5. Switched starring Kaya Kiyohara and Megumi Seki
Kaya Kiyohara is Ayume whose body gets switched with that of Megumi Seki's character. The latter is the "invisible" archetype while the former is the popular, pretty girl. This series explores an interesting perspective (mindset) that challenges that of Birth of a Beauty.
6. Cafe Minamdang
I loved the goofy satire elements of this series. And the ending was satifisfying but admittedly, sometimes the episodes had a tendency to drag the plot on and I had moments when my attention was elsewhere. But I still recommend it.
7. Girl from Nowhere starring Chicha "Kitty" Amatayakul as Nanno
Nanno seems to be an entity of some sort (think Eris, Goddess of Chaos) that infiltrates school after school after school while seeking "social justice." Nanno doesn't pick sides but it has a righteous tone "holding up the mirror to hypocrites." The overall theme isn't evident until about 3 episodes later. Kitty gives a truly enchanting performance as Nanno.
8. The Glory starring Song Hye-Kyo, Lim Ji-yeon
How could I possibly forget the Glory? But I did while writing this list. However, it is one of the best series I've watched. I've liked Lim Ji-Yeon since her movie Obsessed starring opposite Song Seung-Hyeon. She was so natural and convincing that as much as I liked Lim Ji-Yeon, I hated her character so much. Unpopular opinion: While I really like the actor Lee Do-hyun as well as his character, I feel like I could've done without the latter in the movie. His character was really sweet towards Song Hye-Kyo's Dong-eun and very supportive. Bf material, he accepted her with all her flaws. That's all a girl can ask for. However, I feel like his character had nothing to do with the main story and that I would have been fine if he weren't in it.
9. Celebrity
The revenge plotline comes much later. But each episode was so enticing and left me at the edge of my seat. However, they dragged the plotline in the later episodes and the ending was a bit disappointing. So this is on my recommendation list but with a grain of salt.
10. Flower of Evil
The last one is more or less about revenge. But it is about solving a mystery and clearing up one's name. This one made me hella confused and got me hooked. I really like the characters' chemistry. The ending could've been better but great series overall albeit very bittersweet.

[TRANS] 230328 Kwon Yuri Star News Interview (Part 1)
Tears after three-wins in AAA, rewarding feeling after arduous activities
People say that, "If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.", but Kwon Yuri have done it. Through Girls' Generation 15th anniversary activities, she looked familiar as 'singer Kwon Yuri'. Then she stood as 'actor Kwon Yuri' through dramas. At this point, it seems like she does not need any other modifiers. Kwon Yuri, who completed her career solely through her own name, stood in front of the camera again.
Kwon Yuri, who debuted as a member of Girls' Generation in August 2007, rose to prominence as a main actress after appearing in supporting roles and special appearances in dramas such as <Unstoppable Marriage> and <Fashion King> while also promoting as a singer. She later appeared in OCN <Neighborhood Hero>, SBS <Defendant>, MBC <Dae Jang Geum is Watching>, MBN <Bossam>, ENA <Good Job>, and many more. In particular, she met actor Jung Ilwoo in <Bossam> and <Good Job> in 2021 and 2022, and they showcased a strong acting cooperation.
Since she has a solid acting career, it has become natural for her to receive awards as an actor. Kwon Yuri, who won the Best Acting Award at the 6th Asian Artist Awards (AAA) in 2021, received three awards in the 7th Asian Artist Awards in Japan (AAA) in 2022 for ‘Best Asia Celebrity-Television’, ‘Best Actor’, and ‘AAA Best Achievement’ categories. Kwon Yuri, who has been doing personal schedules since 2022 AAA, recently spoke with Star News about the award.
Kwon Yuri, who shed tears after winning the Best Acting Award at 2021 AAA, said, "I cried a lot again this time. This award wasn't just for me; it was for our entire team. I was grateful because it was an honorable award given to the actors (on the projects), company employees, and management teams who worked hard," she explained. "I'm just thankful that there are people who support me and that I can enjoy this moment of honor."
When being asked if she is used to winning trophies as she receives awards every time as a singer or actor, Kwon Yuri said, "The feeling is always new because each award and the timing of receiving it are different." She said, "Especially last year, we did a lot of activities in a tight schedule. So it was physically very tasking. The weight of Girls' Generation's 15th anniversary activities and the responsibility of leading the drama <Good Job> felt heavy. I felt like I was being rewarded by such a big award.”
In particular, <Good Job> is a work that has been filmed for quite a long time. The script was changed in the middle, and there were also difficult shooting sessions. "Honestly, everyone who shoots the drama has one heart and one mind," Kwon Yuri said. “We hoped that this drama would go well, and while the pre-production process can be difficult, we want (the drama) to be well-conveyed in some way. We all discussed a lot fiercely. I am grateful that the writer, director, and production company all completed it well.”

CRYSTALLIS MISSION 006
SCHEDULE TYPE: TRIMESTER ( PART 1 OUT OF 1 ) SCHEDULE RESTRICTIONS: cannot be paired with another trimester schedule, unless stated otherwise. for reference as to whether your muse is eligible for this event, please click over HERE.
despite crystallis’ busy schedules, JUNG NAHEE, HWANG EUNJO, and SEO YEWON gather all of the crystallis members together before they would resume practicing for their comeback. “it’s that time again, so let’s start with our upcoming schedules.” YEWON begins speaking first as she shows the girls their schedules for the next few months.
CRYSTALLIS JAPANESE DEBUT
“a while back i told you a little bit about the japanese debut and the coaches are happy to say that you’ve listened to the feedback and worked on your language skills during that time.” YEWON smiles at the girls before looking back down at her files. she then tells NAHEE and EUNJO to help her hand the lyrics sheet for their japanese debut.
for this, CRYSTALLIS will be having their japanese debut on MAY 29. the list below is their album tracklist for this debut:
TARGET ( TITLE TRACK )
MELTY ( JAEHWA SOLO )
lyrics distributions for this can be found over HERE. because the debut is happening soon, during APRIL the girls will be spending any free time they have in between their promotions and gigs preparing and recording the songs. then starting MAY 1, they will start filming their title track music video. information about this will be listed in the Q2 2023 schedules posts, which will be revealed after all of the career missions have been posted.
CF GIGS
“there are two brands that are interested in doing a commercial with you. however, since ICHIKA will be busy with her other gigs we’ve decided to accept both of the brands and split the remaining six of you into smaller groups.” YEWON explains to the girls as she shows them the brands and the group arrangement.
TEAM MLB
MEMBERS: AHN JAEHWA, MOON SOMIN, SEO YURA
CF INSPO: HERE ( it won’t be exactly like this, but the video is to give you a feel of how it would turn out )
INFO: after filming the cf and photoshoot for the brand, the staff will ask JAEHWA, SOMIN, and YURA to create their own outfit using the MLB products. they will take photos of their complete outfit to post on MLB’s instagram account and list which ones the girls wore.
TEAM 8X4
MEMBERS: GEUM DANBI, GONG HYEJOO, MIN SOYOUN
CF INSPO: HERE ( it won’t be exactly like this, but the video is to give you a feel of how it would turn out )
INFO: after filming the cf and photoshoot for the brand, the staff will ask DANBI, HYEJOO, and SOYOUN to pick their favorite 8x4 deo perfume scent and be asked to pose with it ( similar to this ) for their instagram account.
the CRYSTALLIS members will be working on the photoshoot and cf sometime around MAY.
( IMPORTANT NOTE: this will also count as one slot in the modeling contracts for the CRYSTALLIS members. )
POSSIBLE KOREAN COMEBACK & SUBUNITS
“i think the next bit i’m going to tell you might be a bit of a surprise…” YEWON turned her head slightly towards NAHEE and EUNJO who were already aware of what she’s about to tell them. “legacy is planning on giving you another comeback after your japanese debut but there were some things that we had to negotiate on. legacy is planning on announcing a big project in the next few months, but unfortunately CRYSTALLIS will not be a part of it.” she believes that in due time the girls would understand what she is implying, but for now YEWON does her best to focus on the positive aspects of it.
YEWON continued on, “i did a bit of negotiating with the higher ups about this and suggested that we could let you have a little bit more control over the next album as a trade off for that. while they won’t allow you full control of that yet, you will probably be the first group of this generation that gets to do this. so depending on the outcome, this might influence the company to do it for the other groups as well.”
later on in the conversation, YEWON will reveal to the girls that their next korean comeback is planned for AUGUST. to give the admin team some time to finalize the album list, we’ve decided to let the CRYSTALLIS muns decide the subunit and b-sides. while they won’t have all of the control deciding the b-sides, they will be allowed to suggest to the admin team the subunit concept and arrangement!
here are some stipulations regarding this idea that would need to be taken into consideration:
there can only be 2-3 people in the unit — it’s up to the group to decide how they would like to arrange this, but as seen from above, since JAEHWA has a solo song for the japanese debut, she will be excluded in this activity.
when suggesting your unit ideas, you must include the following: name of the unit, members in the unit, concept ( you can make this simple when describing it / ex. retro and quirky ), and 3 songs references that best match the unit’s concept.
SUBUNITS: you can submit multiple suggestions ( ex. subunit 1 - danbi + soyoun + yura / subunit 2 - hyejoo + somin + ichika / subunit 3 - danbi + hyejoo + yura, etc. ) but do note that you can only submit one entry per unit.
SUBUNIT NAMES: make sure they are appropriate. they do not necessarily have to have crystallis in the unit name, but if you want to take the extra step, you can also provide a reason behind the subunit’s name!
CONCEPT: you do not have to make it similar to what crystallis is known for. however, the best advice for this is to take into account the sounds of the other groups ( this includes lgc girls ) that legacy has at the moment and think of one that wouldn’t overlap too much with their sound.
SONG REFERENCE: they must be korean b-sides released from JULY 1, 2021 to MAY 13, 2023. drama osts will not be counted for this. it is advised that the irl group reference ( for the song ) is close to or matches the number of people in the subunit ( ex. if the crystallis unit has 3 people, you could use a song that has 2-4 people ). this is mostly to make it easier when doing the lyrics distribution for the song, but if you cannot find a suitable song that follows that, it’s fine too.
please send all of your suggestions to admin *! only the suggestions received by her will be the ones that we receive and review through.
to give the admin team ample time to finalize the album list, you have until MAY 13, 2023 11:59PM EDT to complete this.

due to crystallis’ schedule for the next few months, they will be allowed to participate in the MAY cycle of the NOTORIETY TIERS but will not be able to do the JULY cycle.
YOUTUBE LIVESTREAMS
since SOYOUN and SOMIN’s birthdays will be happening this month, they will be given a chance to do a solo livestream on their birthday to interact with the fans. given that they have busy schedules, this will be done in their dorms at night. the livestream will last around 30-45 minutes depending if there are any schedules that they have to attend to the following day.
LANGUAGE POINTS REWARDS
for completing the point requirements, all of the CRYSTALLIS members will be rewarded +10 SKILL POINTS that can be distributed anywhere! this bit will be added in the crystallis mission form.
ONE LAST THING…
before ending their meeting, YEWON tells the members in a stern tone, “and as a reminder from our meeting last time, please be careful of who you are spending time with, especially when you’re outside of legacy. the fact that we’ve been receiving so many offers and gigs as of late means that all of you are popular to the general public in some way or another. but as idols become more popular, there are more people watching over you and your actions.” the head manager let out a sigh as she added, “and as HARU’s JAMES said recently on a variety show, ‘don’t go outside, or else you’ll get caught no matter what.’ and to be frank, he’s right. after all, look what happened to him after that one scandal…”
NAHEE turned her head to look at YEWON with a smirk on her face, wanting to tease YEWON for her warning. YEWON stopped her as she dismissed the CRYSTALLIS members hastily. “okay, the meeting is done so go get ready for your comeback!”

SBS Hyena, episode 1 rewatch (part 5)
LEE JI EUN, BEST GIRL. With a haircut and savagery to match her boss.
Jung Geum-ja straight up tells Yoon Hee-jae that she did the con for money. We know the building is important, but not yet why (why that particular building, anyway, if you just wanted to be rich?). But here, with Lee Seo-u, we see the Ends with which she justified her Means (and HOW mean, honestly), and that is Geum-ja's Achilles' heel: hurting kids.
(DUE DILIGENCE, YOON HEE-JAE. DO IT NEXT TIME, YOU SUPPOSED ACE. Although even if he had, what was he going to have done about it?)
(I think this should read - “he’s impatient with women who nag for attention.”)
Of course he hates women who nag for his attention. Of course he will also be the one begging, in no short order, for hers.
I love her tracksuits. They're very different from the dresses she wore as Kim Hee-sun, but she wears everything with the same air of insouciance. A tracksuit is apropos for a woman who will never sit still; who's always running, either towards her next goal or away from her feelings.
As @thefeastandthefast would say: she's always driving away first.
What follows, in a genius bit, is the deconstruction of the romantic convention we saw earlier. The right hair, the right look (that oversized shirt was no accident, was it?), the right place, positioning herself in just the right spot, even the gag with the power going out - happenstance and fate, as far as Hee-jae is concerned, because that’s how everything in his life has shaken out thus far - but in reality it’s the result of a three-person team working round the clock and their tireless choreography.
It looked like a romance film because it was one, and entirely (or not?) fictional.
No commentary required. This dress. HER. Mother.
Up next: the most audaciously sexy line in all of Kdrama.
