The Last Years of Julius Caesar’s Life in Five Coins
Tumblr media
Written by Sebastian L. Harris
Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 BCE) is considered one of history’s greatest generals and statesmen, who famously defeated the Germanic king Vercingetorix during the Gallic Wars (58-50 BCE) and his former ally Pompey during the Civil War (49-45 BCE). However, he might also be described as one of the best self-promoters, as seen through his and the Caesarians’ coins. Coinage provides a wealth of knowledge on the history and motivations behind the individuals who minted or authorised them, so let us examine a sample of five coins from the final years of Julius Caesar’s life.
CIVIL WAR. After Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 BCE (both literally and figuratively), his ally-turned-enemy and senatorial champion, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, fled from Brundisium to the East, leaving Rome and the Roman Senate exposed, both of which offered little opposition. While fighting Pompey over the next two years, he established a moving mint where he minted the first coinage to bear his name. The denarius (RRC 443/1) depicts symbols of the pontifex maximus (“chief high priest”) on the obverse, a position he used to emphasise his connection with the gods. The reverse represents the perpetua discordia between elephants and snakes, where a cornered snake (Caesar) will triumph over the larger elephant (Pompey). SPOILER: Caesar did win and was given his most prominent title as a result.
Tumblr media
Silver Denarius of C. Julius Caesar (49 BCE) [RRC 443/1]
DICTATOR. Although declared dictator (traditional Republican magistrate) for eleven days in early 48 BCE, he was later named dictator for one year, then ten further years after successfully ending the Civil War that year. During his time as dictator (48-44 BCE), he changed the number of magistracies and reformed the state, minting a coin portraying himself as dictator for the first time, an aureus in 47 BCE (RRC 456/1). It depicts an axe, culullus (ritual vessel), jug and lituus (military trumpet), all symbols of the pontifex maximus, and the legend DICT ITER (“Dictator for the second time”). While he also held other positions (consul, augur, pontifex maximus) [RRC 467/1], he advertised his dictator position most frequently on coins (17 times). There is, however, a more peculiar title he gave himself.
Tumblr media
Gold Aureus of C. Julius Caesar (47 BCE) [RRC 456/1]
MORALS. In 46 BCE, Julius Caesar established a new office that was very similar to the censors'. This office was known as prefect of the morals. He added this position so he could wield the censorial powers and not be constrained by limitations, using this prefecture to fill the Senate with his own faction and minimise opposition. Although minted by the moneyer Publius Sepullius Macer after Caesar’s death in 44 BCE (RRC 480/21), the denarius depicts the image of Caesar as moralistic. The coin features a tetrastyle temple with the legend CLEMENTIAE CAESARIS (“Caesar the Clement”) on the obverse, with a desultor (skilled horsemen who lept from one horse or chariot to another) and moneyer’s name on the reverse (a reference to Caesar’s Games at the Parilia). He does, however, go from being moral to being authoritarian in two years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silver Denarius of P. Sepullius Macer (44 BCE) [RRC 480/21]
PERPETUO. Dictator is a word with a negative connotation, as someone who has complete and absolute power, and we can trace this use back to when Julius Caesar was named dictator perpetuo (“dictator for life”) in 44 BCE. He chose every representative in Rome, strengthening his support, so it is no surprise most coins minted in 44 BCE are pro-Caesar, including a range of silver denarii with the DICT·PERPETVO legend by the same Macer above. This coin (RRC 480/10) depicts the wreathed head of Caesar, matched by Venus (holding Victory, sceptre and shield) on the reverse; Venus being the mythical ancestor of the Julii (see RRC 458/1). It would, however, only be a matter of time before Caesar would be ‘stabbed in the back.’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silver Denarius of P. Sepullius Macer (47 BCE) [RRC 480/10]
EID OF MAR. A day marked by several religious observations and notable as a deadline for settling debts (ironically), March 15th has become synonymous with Julius Caesar’s assassination. Ignoring a warning by the seer Spurinna to “beware the Ides of March,” Caesar entered the Curia of Pompey and was stabbed 23 times by 60 senators, led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. To celebrate the death of Caesar, the conspirator Brutus authorised the moneyer L. Plaetorius Cestianus to mint a denarius in 43 BCE (RRC 508/3). The coin depicts the head of Brutus, and the reverse features a pileus (“cap of freedom”) between two daggers with the legend EID MAR. As to whether killing Caesar benefitted Rome or not is still debated, but arguably it was crucial for Rome’s development as an Empire.
Tumblr media
Silver Denarius of L. Plaetorius Cestianus (43 BCE) [RRC 508/3]
Coins are sometimes the overlooked keys that are crucial to understanding history. These artefacts support the narrative presented in written sources (both ancient and modern), and it is through these coins that we can see the changing “face” of Caesar. We see what he stood for and how he effectively used his titles and honours to promote himself to Roman society. As to whether he was the good stateman or bad tyrant in the last years of his life, I will leave that up to you to decide.

rachel berenson headcanons bc i love that girl.
loves loves loves cassie. would die for cassie. (they have been known to make out on occasion)
they met when they were 8 at a summer camp in santa monica; cassie had just moved from virginia and and rachel had just moved from los angeles. coincidentally, they would be going to the same school in the fall. rachel started off thinking cassie was pretty weird, but she defended her from some bullies (like a champ) and spent a bit of time watching her poke around in the dirt, water the flowers and talk to the birds and the butterflies. by the end of the week, cassie had asked rachel to be her best friend by making little friendship bracelets for the two of them.
rachel ALWAYS wore her bracelet, and i mean ALWAYS. it's just plain beads, leftover accessories from when cassie had braids to decorate, but rachel never cared if it didn't match her outfit. she ALWAYS wore that thing. eventually they had grown so much that the bracelet was too small to be worn on the wrist, so rachel switched to wearing hers around her ankle and has been doing so ever since. it's so old and worn that it has snapped (she tied it back together haphazardly) and lost beads (she didn't mind), but she refuses to let it go.
she's actually left-handed!
big 3 battle morphs: grizzly bear, elephant and bald eagle.
favourite morphs (aside from big 3): cheetah, cat, german shepherd.
no pets, but she wouldn't mind a cat or a large dog like a husky. she isn’t big on either, though.
she doesn't want kids bc she feels like she's already had that experience with her little sisters. and it's true; especially since the divorce, rachel's been like a second mom to jordan (two years younger) and sara (five years younger).
she wants to drive a sports car or a motorcycle when she's older and honestly she'll probably do both.
guaranteed weak spots: her little sisters, cassie.
even mean rachel never snapped at cassie not ONCE! the most she did was glower and grumble in her direction tbh.
light golden-blonde hair, lower back length.
her eyes are like, fuckin electric ice-blue. please get her brown contacts
she is 6′0 and the tallest of the animorphs.
her ears are pierced yes BUT she ALSO has a silver nose ring. idk the backstory behind that one but it's there.
she was so overjoyed when cassie got faux locs. "girl finally you're doing something with your hair." of course, cassie proceeded to keep them tied back 24/7. "it's so they don't get in the way when i work!" "you work around the clock?" "pretty much...?"
she does like how cassie uses her own bracelet, the one matching with rachel's, to tie the locs back, tho. she took special notice of that.
this girl is a femme lesbian !! i know it when i see it. she and cassie are like a textbook example of femme4butch.
she's an aries.
she was born just a month before jake. throughout the war they came to see each other as brother and sister really
usually she HATES physical touch. like "get off me or in three seconds i will vaporize you." she can stand it with cassie who is a big fan of cuddling and being vulnerable and all that. but most of the time hell nah. her love language is quality time alll the way.
rachel is a BIG FAN of cass as a nickname for cassie. she tends to save it for when they’re alone together tho.
cassie’s nickname for rachel is rach. it was their special thing but marco didn’t gaf and started calling her rach too. so did jake (he picked it up from marco)
rachel and marco were actually quite close before he transitioned. they grew apart, then grew back together during the war. they are an Unstoppable duo. their chemistry could blow up the world.
she is jewish yes this is canon but i feel like it's not touched upon enough. it's very important to her! she is ethnically and culturally jewish, but an atheist!
rachel’s last words, “i love you”, were directed to ALL of the animorphs. cassie, tobias, jake, marco and ax. i just think it feels right.
please someone bring this girl back to life so she can go home and marry cassie with jake as best man Thanks.
i do have an au where the ellimist stopping time for rachel at the moment of her death actually meant something (he rewound the tapes a bit and let her live). thumbs up

[violence mention tw; Parkinson’s mention tw]
Fletcher Van Hall is an SF native and only child to older parents who couldn’t really do much with him, because he was a mouthy wild child and got into a lot of fights in his adolescence. His parents tried various forms of discipline and punishment but Fletcher continued to act out–fueled further by his parents quickly giving up on him and sometimes insulting him. When his parents really couldn’t take anymore of his behavior and the consequences that came with it, they made him go live with his uncle–who wasn’t drastically younger than his parents but connected with Fletcher and could level his bone-headedness.
His uncle Drew owned The Ink Tank–the tattoo parlor that Fletcher now runs and works at. His uncle has 2 kids of his own but they’re ungrateful, greedy jackasses (there’s really no polite way of describing how they are, more often than not). Nearly everything Fletcher learned about tattoo artistry, he learned from his uncle and he’s been really proud to keep the shop open and successful. Prior to getting to actually work on body art, Fletcher had been working as a bouncer at a local club–an apprenticeship at The Ink Tank during the day, and monitoring a Castro club at night. Art, particularly drawing and tattoo design gave Fletcher an outlet and purpose, which grew to be his passion. This helped him calm down significantly, even though his lack of filter and combative nature still get him caught up in conflicts from time to time.
His uncle Drew was running and working in the shop until he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He still hangs around the shop and is very much the father-figure Fletcher’s needed in his life. Drew’s own children don’t have the best relationship with him and have been pushing for him to close the shop–essentially putting Fletcher out of income–ever since his diagnosis. He’s refused, having seen Fletcher’s success with the shop, on top of his own pride in the shop’s long-standing legacy in SF.
Today, Fletcher has relationships with his crew at The Ink Tank, his uncle, and a handful of people he actually considers friends. He can’t stand his cousins but occasionally puts up with them (as much as he can manage) for his uncle’s sake whenever they come around. As far his parents go, he has next-to-no relationship with them. They’ve called to wish him Happy Birthday, and inconsistently contact him around the holidays, but that’s about it. When it comes to romantic relationships, Fletcher identifies as panseuxal and has had romantic relationships of varying kinds–from casual hookups and dating, to a few serious relationships over the year with people of different genders, but mostly women. His last relationship ended August 2022 after almost a year of being together with his ex. He hasn’t been actively looking but hasn’t closed himself off from relationships either. Most of his focus these days has been on the shop and his uncle.

Friedrichshafen to Füssen
We awoke and went on a run, then packed and had breakfast before boarding the train for our first leg of the trip, a short hop to Lindau. We then went to the platform to board our train to Munich to again find it was “cancelled due to bad weather”. The next train wasn’t until 2 hours later and seemed to running as scheduled (at least per google maps) so we made a split second decision to walk to a fancy spa/hot springs Matt remembered from 2006 and hoofed it over there with all our gear. We ended up with about 45 min of splashing around in the water to get kid energy out. It remains a very fancy place! Matt did not recall it previously having waterslides, but it now does and these were a big hit. There was a smaller one that you rode with no tube that was similar to Shoshone chutes at Glenwood hot springs (but without a tube so you definitely got beat up a bit and the exit into deep water really tumbled you under the water for a bit). The other was a big tube slide that you could ride in single or double tubes and was faster but felt less scary to Matt as a parent as water was not too deep or powerful. Interestingly, there was no lifeguard on duty at the top or bottom of either slide, which definitely would not have flown in the US. We rushed to dry off and hurried back to the station only to find that the next train towards Munich was…also cancelled 🙁….At this point we decided to investigate a bit more and looked into rental car options (nothing available that would seat 6). We briefly considered cramming all of us into a 5 person car but then found on the German railway website an “alternate route” that involved a 1 hour bus ride then 2 other trains. We opted for this, with a silver lining being the kids got some time at a cool elephant themed playground on the island part of Lindau while waiting for the bus. Overall, the alternate route worked out fairly smoothly. We even lucked out and made a very tight (2 min) connection which made us get to Füssen 1 hour earlier than the website thought we could. Becca read more about the reason for cancellations and it turns out a section of tracks and buildings on the line between Lindau and Munich had been damaged by the storms overnight (apparently the damage was severe enough they initially though a tornado had come through). In Füssen we were pleased to see it was a short walk to our hostel and our room was nice and clean with well designed bunk beds (and a taxidermied pheasant that freaked Emily and Becca out to the point they refused to sleep under it and Matt had to). We had initially planned to check out Neuschwanstein castle this afternoon, but due to arriving about 4 hours later than planned, we opted to just explore the town and move the castle to the next morning. Füssen turned out to be a very cool little touristy town and we walked around a bit then had a tasty dinner in a German/Italian themed restaurant: Biem Olivenbauer. The waiter was very kind to our children but also told Becca she could not have a fried egg added to her salad because that was gross. We then grabbed ice cream and called it a night, glad we had made it through another day of travel woes thanks to the storms.

Different Pieces Of Oxidised Jewellery Online For Retro Look
Tumblr media
Fashion is evolving these days quickly. Different kinds of fashion jewellery are becoming more popular. As a result, women are increasingly experimenting with jewellery in addition to their clothing. Jewellery gives you a complete, rich personality that also helps you appear fashionable. Earlier, there were no other choices than gold or silver jewellery for women. At the same time, it is not the case currently. If we talk about current jewellery trends, oxidised jewellery is on-trend. You appear more sober since it seems to be silver. It also sparkles and maintains its colour for a very long period of time. These days, many reputable jewellery brands offer the best quality oxidised jewellery online.
In the past, heavy oxidised jewellery was exclusively worn by tribal women during their cultural explorations, and oxidised jewellery was connected with the Indian hippy culture. But as time went on, people began to recognise the elegance of this specific jewellery and how it enhanced a woman's overall look and outfit. Today, oxidised jewellery is widely used in everyday life as well as during weddings, festivals, fashion shows, and other events.
Different Pieces Of Oxidised Jewellery
Currently, the hottest trend is oxidised jewellery. We've put up a list of the must-have oxidised accessories for all you fashionistas.
Oxidised Necklace
Oxidized necklaces offer you the ideal vintage look. You may add a gorgeous oxidised jewellery necklace set to your plain shirt and long skirt to make it appear more classy. With its fashionable appearance, you will feel lovely and comfortable. These come in a variety of styles, including high-neck chokers, long necklaces, daily wear chain with pendant, and even plain chains. The intricate lockets and pendants are set with additional coloured semi-precious stones. Some are even painted to draw attention to the intricate details of the design. These little design elements make them even more attractive and adaptable to be worn with both Western and Indian-style dresses.
Oxidised Bangles
These days bangles are quite popular among modern girls. The wonderful thing about oxidised jewellery is that it complements both classic and contemporary attire. Some of the most popular metal shade variants in oxidised fashion jewellery are dull gold, pale silver, black metal silver, and German silver. Women typically enjoy stacking a few coloured bangles in between thin, oxidised bangles. You may also show off the Indo-Western mood that they give off by wearing your jeans with a white kurta, oxidised fashion jewellery, and vibrant juttis. Miss Highness offers the best quality oxidised bangles for every occasion.
Oxidised Rings
An oxidised ring is the ideal piece of artificial jewellery to make you stand out in a crowd. Pair your oxidised jewellery with your attire to get a daring style for a nighttime party. These rings come in a variety of sizes and styles. Additionally, they are set in a gold and silver mix, making them suitable for clothing with both silver and gold embellishments. It might be difficult to combine gold and silver without seeming garish or overdressed. But these rings both make this a popular match and simplify our lives. These rings are a perfect addition to your jewellery collection.
Oxidised Earrings
A pair of oxidised earrings is a must to complete your classic appearance. If you add a pair of oxidised Jhumkas to your plain kurta, you'll appreciate how youthful this ensemble looks. They frequently appear in floral patterns as well as peacock and elephant themes. The spectacular earrings are rather large and frequently include eye-catching, detailed artistry. They are frequently used in combination with textured stones in the colours magenta and turquoise blue. Oxidized earrings come in a variety of styles that are all lovely and functional, including Jhumkas, Chandbalis, long drop earrings, pearl earrings, and simple earrings.
Oxidised Maang Tikka
Modern girls like playing around with their appearance. If you enjoy playing with your appearance, you should surely try oxidised Maang Tikka. They look gorgeous when worn with lehengas and sarees. A beautiful gown, tank top, indo-western dress, or even a maxi dress looks stunning and dramatic when worn with an oxidised Maang Tikka. A headpiece and a stack of bangles may be used with your dress to create a very chic and current wedding or evening party appearance.

It is quite comfortable to wear for a very long period of time.
Taking Care Of Oxidised Jewellery
Oxidized jewellery may seem extremely sassy when worn casually. It doesn't take much effort to maintain the original colour of oxidised jewellery. We frequently fail to take care of our fashion jewellery and end up giving up on or hiding our favourite items. If you genuinely care about your jewellery, you should store it carefully to maintain its shine. We'll give you some pointers on how to keep your oxidised jewellery safe.
Avoid Using Cleaners: The majority of cleansers are highly harsh on imitation jewellery and are designed for real gold, silver, or platinum-crafted jewellery. Use no dangerous chemical cleaners to clean or restore the surface's original gloss. Keeping them in zippered bags is the ideal method to maintain the shine.
Clean Your Oxidised Jewellery Before Storing It: One of the key steps to take when trying to extend the life of your jewellery is to clean it before storing it. Generally speaking, body sweat alters the colour of jewellery. The brightness and sparkle of the oxidised jewellery react with the salts generated by our sweat.
Keep Them Away From Other Jewellery: The same manner you preserve your gold jewellery is not appropriate for pearl storage. So, in general, you will get separate pouches to store your oxidised jewellery when you buy it from Miss Highness. The best method to save your jewellery items is to keep them wrapped in a really soft cloth. Each piece of your jewellery collection is unique and has unique qualities, so take care of them nicely.
Keep Your Jewellery Safe In The Pouches: You can always store your oxidised accessories in zip lock bags or a travel bag to preserve their classic look if you actually want to wear them for a very long time. Jewellery tarnishes due to oxidisation when exposed to excessive oxygen. Consequently, store them in airtight pouches.
Conclusion
With its sophisticated appearance, oxidised jewellery may drastically enhance the wearer's appearance. The stunning oxidised jewellery is made by fusing two metals and may be worn with confidence by any woman. Miss Highness is currently India’s most trusted artificial jewellery brand, where you can easily get oxidised jewellery of many styles and designs. From Miss Highness, you can get oxidised neckpieces, heavy oxidised jewellery, oxidised jewellery necklace set, Jhumka sets, bangles, and more. At our online store, you can easily buy any type of oxidised jewellery online without giving it any second thought.
