(Own poets and officers that even the Universe has got under work so today *selber auch besitzt!).

Review #24
Schwarzbier is a bridge between my favorite styles (dark ales) and my least favorite styles (lagers) a sweeter and roastier take on a normally light and crisp beer is just interesting enough to keep me around. Köstritzer’s Schwarzbier is no exception. 7/10

The Jäger Battalion
The journey from Helsinki to Königsberg had been long.
Finland has joined several other young and determined Finns from Liisankatu 17 in Helsinki, over to Turku, the boats to Sweden, down to Kalmar and finally the last boat to the Prussian capital of Königsberg. Where he was brought to the Lockstedter Lager.
He remembers sneaking past Sweden in Stockholm, after they nearly ran into each other.
But Sweden was not allowed to know of this. Nighter was Russia, Estonia or anyone for that matter.
The only other Nation that knew of his travel was the one, who will take over his training the next years. The war forged iron eagle of Europe. The one who has started on a storm through central Europe. The one who united the German lands into the Kaiserreich Germany.
Finland has hoped to be personally trained by Prussia, but hasn't seen the nation ever since coming.
For a year now the Lockstedter Lager has hosted him and the other Finnish soldiers.
The first 3 months, Finland hasn't gotten any special treatment for being a fellow nation. He got thrown into the same base training as all the other Finns. Which meant no actual military training but scout training, Pfadfinder, as the Germans called it.
But one day, thier scouts trainer went to Berlin, leaving the Finns hidden as scouts behind. An idea sparked within him and his citizens. They gathered military uniforms and sneaked over to the prussians and thier military drills.
Finally after month of being hidden, the Kaiser finally gave his blessings for the Finnish battalion!
They formed into the Royal Prussian 27th Jäger Battalion.
Finland was proud of his people. Now more than 1000 young men, from all courses of live have joined the movement. He could hear Finnish and Swedish being spoken around thier barracks. The lake used as a leisure time for cold dips, a reminder of home.
After all, Finland was the land of the thousand lakes.
A message reached the Finnish battalion and Finland at the end of April 1916. Prussia himself will come to oversee thier progress.
Finland knew this was his chance, his chance to gain more training. To really learn from another nation!
May 1st, 1916, the high general Prussia, or Oberbefehlsgeneral Preußen as he was called in German, entered the grounds of the Lockstedter Lager.
The 27th Jäger Battalion proudly stands still in the military salute.
Finland sneaked a look at Prussia. His white hair stood out, just as his red eyes... wait, was that a scar?
Just in that moment, Prussia stepped out of his sight.
He had hoped that after the assembly, he'd get called to Prussia, but that didn't happen. He was ordered into the presentation drills with the rest of the battalion.
One drill after another was performed. Finland got dragged into the rush of the moment, forgetting that Prussia was right there. He and his men only had one goal, fight Russia, gain independence. And this was their chance of proving their fighting spirit.
When running from one successfully finished drill to the other one, he saw Prussia.
The nation had stepped down from his horse and started to inspect the troops closely.
Finlands steps became slower, his view zeroing in on the other one.
This stance screamed authority, the uniform perfectly crisp, not a hair out of order and a scar running across his face. The affected eye has turned a milky colour.
Still that presence....
"Are we getting tired?"
The comments came suddenly, pulling Finland out of his trance.
"N-No, Sir!"
Prussia's face did not change as he raised his eyebrow and questioned further:
"Then why are we slowing down?!"
Finland was unsure what to say. He knew just the right word, but there was no translation. He didn't know a translation into Swedish, Russian, English, or German that would fit the word.
"You have Sisu, Sir." He answered.
Prussia seems to lose his face: "Did you just call me a Sisi?!"
"No, no! Not Sisi! SISU!"
Prussia's face became stern. "Didn't we say that you Finns were supposed to speak German?! And what the heck is a Sisu?"
Finland braced himself. This was his moment to get recognition!
He moved into a military salute, looking Prussia directly into the eye.
"I am Finland, the personification of my people. Rather, they speak Finnish, Swedish, or German! We don't want to speak Russian, I don't want to be Russia's territory anymore. I am Suomi! And Sisu is a word in my language. It's untranslatable and means things like perseverance, strength of will, determination, and the will to fight."
Prussia was taken a back. Thus little nation had more backbone than many other big and established countries.
He would even say the he's impressed....
"Well then! Let's see what you have in store for me, Suomi."
~~~~~~~
Inspired by @nordickies picture of Prussia training a Jäger Finland!
I hope I did you justice and managed to get the meaning of sisu right.
Historical background as always!
The Finnish Jäger Movement. Basically, about 200 Finnish students went to Germany, Prussia, to be exact, to train for their independence movement. The Germans wanted to hide the Finns at first, hence why they were not trained as soldiers but as Pathfinders/Scouts first. They were also ask to not speak Finnish or Swedish.
Bc at the beginning of WW1, Russia was not involved in a war with Germany... yet. That changes later on, and more Finns got actively recruited. Kaiser Wilhelm also then officially recognised the Finnish battalion and made them the 27th Jäger Battalion.
Sisu. That is a Finnish only word. The rough translation is strength of will, determination, or a straight mind in a fight and perseverance.
The Admiral's Toaster
“If I recall you like a Märzen the color of your uniform.” Jim held up a bottle. Pike’s light flashed once for yes. Before Kirk could pour for him, the chair moved sideways, gently bumping into Spock’s side. Spock’s fingers once more sought out his friend’s psi points. “He says it’s the color of your uniform, now.” Spock stared into Pike’s good eye, then sighed wearily, “ Son. They dolled me up in that god awful red monstrosity with a built in bib.” The corner of Spock’s mouth ticked up in a faint smile. “Don’t let them promote you until the next uniform change.” Jim laughed as he filled both glasses attached to Pike’s beer hat with golden German lager. Pike took the long drink of a man who hadn’t been allowed any vices in all too long. He sighed contentedly, shoulders visibly relaxing in his chair.
Ruth Ben-Ghiat at Lucid:
"Should I leave the country now for somewhere safer?” “How do you know when it's time to move?" “Where should I go?” Almost every day now, as the inauguration of Donald Trump approaches, I receive queries like these from fellow Americans. The personalized nature of the decision to go into exile means that it is very difficult to counsel people. However, we can learn from the history of such fateful choices, which also teaches us that exile is not a linear path, nor an irreversible one. I have been engaging with the history of émigrés from dictatorships for decades. My interest in studying Fascism was sparked by growing up in Pacific Palisades, California, where the writer Thomas Mann and other famous exiles had sought refuge from Nazism. Over the next century, America became a destination for so many others fleeing dictatorship. Now it may be our turn to experience some form of autocracy. The title of this essay sums up the eternal dilemma of the anti-authoritarian: do I stay and resist, or go into exile? In reality, there is a third option, and as everywhere in the world, it is likely to be the most popular one. You stay put, and keep your head down and your criticism of the government private. That way you and your loved ones can minimize any adverse consequences while you “wait it out.” Only a small percentage of the population leaves the country, or stays and actively resists, not least because these choices pose financial, legal, physical, and other challenges. And yet it is often these minorities who make history, whether by leading the opposition from abroad (as Belarusian politician Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is doing from Lithuania) or from inside the country, organizing protests or other resistance actions. And in our age of transnational repression, being abroad can still be dangerous for dissidents who persist with political activities.
Yet the questions that the politically active have grappled with have changed little since the dawn of authoritarianism. If all the resisters leave, who is left to fight for freedom? How can I turn my back on my country? “Guilt is exile’s eternal companion,” reflects the writer Hisham Matar, who, as the son of Jaballa Matar, an opponent of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was forced to follow his compatriots’ fates from abroad and had no information about his imprisoned relatives back home. And if the resisters who stay are silenced, who is left to lead the struggle, document the abuses, and counter the propaganda? Isn’t it more pragmatic to leave and be able to work for freedom rather than sit in jail? Alexi Navalny’s death in a Siberian lager is an example of what can happen to high-profile opponents of the dictator when they do not leave. Navalny could have easily remained abroad after his stay in Germany to recover from a Kremlin poisoning, but he refused to remove himself voluntarily and make it easier for the “thieving little man in his bunker,” as he memorably referred to Vladimir Putin during his 2021 Moscow sentencing, to claim victory over him and his anti-corruption work.
Some people escape one dictatorship by going to another. That might seem strange, and yet geographical proximity or the ability to get residence papers make it a not uncommon choice. Chileans who fled Augusto Pinochet’s military regime after the 1973 coup settled in Brazil’s military regime, or (if they were Communists) in East Germany. Germans found refuge from Nazism in Fascist Italy, and Syrians crossed the border to Turkey as they fled the Assad regime. Some exiles also return home, thinking maybe it won’t be that bad, before leaving again for good. Many people want to know the right time to leave, and history is full of stories of people who did not leave their countries in time to escape persecution. There are good reasons for this. Dictators are impulsive, and love “shock events,” as I refer to them in Strongmen (which has exile as a theme). What is fine today may be grounds for persecution tomorrow, and all bets are off if a state of emergency is declared.
Going into exile also requires money and other things that many individuals do not have: a job offer, the right connections, entry papers, a way to care for loved ones who cannot leave, or a place to stay in another country. Those at elite institutions or multinational/global companies might have more possibilities to move abroad than activists or politicians rooted in local contexts. That’s why we should not assume that those who stay in dictatorships are in denial. The Jewish linguist Viktor Klemperer is a case in point. He remained in Nazi Germany because he could not find a university position abroad (unlike his famous conductor cousin, Otto Klemperer, who moved to Los Angeles). “Don’t think about it, live one’s life, bury oneself in the most private matters!" he wrote in late September 1938, hoping, like other Jews who stayed in Germany, that each new round of persecution would be the last. "Fine resolution, but so difficult to keep.”
As we prepare for some form of autocracy in America, it is no comfort to know that Trump and his zealous and unscrupulous associates have advertised their desire to go after groups of people perennially targeted by authoritarians: immigrants, Muslims, Jews, opposition politicians, the unhoused, LGBTQ+ people, activists, journalists, scientists, and educators. It will be especially dangerous to be a transgender person in America, or anyone involved with reproductive and immigrant rights. American movements in response to autocracy may differ from those of other populations due to the strength of states’ rights here. We are likely to see internal migration instead of exile, with people leaving states where voting, reproductive, LGBTQ+ and other rights are being extinguished.
There's also a history of regional movement in search of freedom in our country that we can build on. The Jim Crow South was a regional authoritarianism in many respects. That’s why the former CEO and President of the NAACP, Cornell William Brooks, states in our 2021 Lucid interview that we might begin to see “Black Southerners who came to New York and Chicago and Detroit” as “refugees; they were fleeing terrorism. And so Black folk are the descendants of these refugees, as well as of enslaved people." While every person contemplating exile has their own unique situation and resources, there is one constant among such departures: when you exit your homeland, you enter into a state of waiting. Waiting for things to get better; waiting for the tyrant to die or, if elections still exist, be voted out; waiting for freedom to arrive so you can return to beloved places and people.
Ruth Ben-Ghiat wrote a solid piece on the tough decision for those opposed to tyrannical regimes as to whether to stay and fight back or leave for exile.
I stared at the little children. It was not right. I had never believed in the war until I had gone into Germany and seen what the Germans had in mind for the world: the slave-labor lagers, the broken families, the men from Dachau; old women and little children worked to death in Ruhr factories. To me the Germans were a nation of barbarous psychopaths responsible for the first-degree murder of ten to fifteen million Poles, Russians, and Jews, innocent civilians whose only crime was to have been born—Poles, Russians, or Jews. They had filled hundreds and hundreds of tank ditches with the bodies of men, women, and children, had denied God and Christ to follow a satanic Messiah who promised them only murder on the vilest and vastest scale in history. A nation of animal lovers who had never understood people, the Germans had set out deliberately to exterminate the Slav, to annihilate the Jew, to murder all whom they disliked or who would not love them as animals loved them that had been taught to obey and beg for food. I wanted the Germans to be thoroughly punished, to help seek out those responsible for the mass murders—if I could ever catch Himmler or Hitler or Goering, I would take the greatest delight in making them die slowly—but I did not blame all the Germans, I did not think it right to return barbarism with injustice, to take out on little children the crimes of sadistic countrymen.
~ David Kenyon Webster
