On November 7, Curator Dot Porter will bring out Ms. Codex 1604, a manuscript collection of texts of hymns and prayers bound with slightly later printed pastoral works appropriate for a priest. The main languages used in both printed and manuscript are German and Latin, and the manuscript section was written in Germany in the late 15th century. It's a fascinating example of the interplay between print and manuscript through the 15th century.
Coffee With A Codex is an informal lunch or coffee time to meet virtually with Kislak curators and talk about one of the manuscripts from Penn's collections. Each week we'll feature a different manuscript and the expertise of one of our curators. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Discussing the long s with a historian professor friend of mine and we were looking at the grammar rules for usage and couldn’t stop laughing.
We just invented a new example sentence of the use of the long s that he’s going to use in class this semester, so you’re all welcome, students.
“That certainly is a fuccefs of a word” (the round s is always used as the final letter in words that end with s)
Yes we are just repeating Fuck Efs at each other. Mature adults, us.
#we got onto the topic via German-language newspapers on Trove and amusing ourself at the Gothic typeface#then disappeared down a rabbithole of ‘was the long s discontinued in different languages at different times’#as the papers were late for an English long s#answer: yes and we can thank Hitler for FINALLY getting German off Gothic and onto Antiqua with the rest of Euro languages#Latin lettering supremacy!#(for a good time read about how Otto von Bismarck refused to accept any book gifts printed in Latin and returned them!#absolute mad lad areas)

It's #NationalAardvarkWeek! Besides being one of my favorite mammals, it's also the most evolutionarily distinct one (more on that below). Stay tuned for more aardvark art and info all week long! 😎 #AardvarksAareAawesome

#DYK the Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) is the only living representative of an entire ORDER of mammals, Tubulidentata? This helped it score as the #1 most evolutionarily distinctive (ED) mammal on ZSL's EDGE of Existence list:
[FYI the only other mammal order with a single living member is Microbiotheria, represented by the Monito del Monte (Dromiciops gliroides) - however they have more living relatives one step out in superorder Australidelphia than the Aardvark does in the Afrotheria.]

"It's on the internet archives" "You can just buy the eBook" "there's probably a pdf somewhere out there you can pirate" those are all very valid and very good options and alternatives but have you considered I don't want to spend hours upon hours looking at a screen until my vision gets blurry because the eye strain gives me headaches and it's also bad for the eyes in general because the blue rays damage your retina and also it gives me headaches and makes my eyes hurt
#not a criticism of like. online books or wjatever one would call that#realistically speaking I know it's probably the economically better alternative because less paper and sooo much cheaper and more accessible#in theory the accessibility part is in theory#it's more accessible when we're talking about english literature try finding good German translations online for free that's a hassle#i imagine it's not better for languages like...italian or something thats not as widely spoken as English french or spanish I suppose#I'm just a little annoyed because I have the option of spending money to read comfortably with an actual book in hand#or saving money and storage space but instead damaging my eyes and getting myself a pretty little headache as a treat#reading for relaxation just doesn't really work when your head starts to hurt after half an hour of staring at this bright thing#because a lot of pdfs also don't have an option to reverse the colours#black background and white letters I mean#and paper doesn't glow so thats not an issue there. there the problem is just if it's printed well#idk I'm just tired and annoyed that books cost money when you want to read them in a way that doesn't make your head and eyes hurt

BAM.
BIBICALLY ACCURATE MARINE CRYPTID
siphonophores will never not freak me out. stop doing that its SCARY but also please don't ever stop doing that you ethereal marine cryptid
#the drawings make them seem more angel like than they actually truly are#like that last print is of a hula skirt siphonophore#search it up and you'll see#but this says something about Haeckel's view of siphonophores or just certain marine animals in general#because it's said his book isn't just drawings of nature no#its the world from the way he sees it but thats about how it works with so many forms of art and media#but anyways thats a different conversation#bottomline is german biologist dude sees smth religious in cnidarians for sure#DID MORE RESEARCH AND I WAS RIGHT#turns out this dude is known for advocating monism in germany too#he wrote a thing on it saying the monistic idea of god sees the divine spirit in all things#“It can never recognise in God a ”personal being“ or in other words an individual of limited extension in space or even of human form.”#“God is everywhere.” GODDAMN#yeah dont blame the dude for seeing smth divine in these incredible creatures of the deep#do blame him for being a racist fuck though. Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, published and printed 1790 by Thomas von Trattern. This edition is a collection of selected letters, several wormholes are decorating this book.
Presenting Christian Fürchtegott Gellert - Moral philosopher, poet of Enlightment, narrator of fables and valued for his clear and prosaic style. The first time I read from him in praisings of my beloved Wieland & Lessing and later read of the correspondence with C. K. Schlegel. In the Transition Epoch of so many wonderful genre of literature, Gellert is one of the most read writers.
The printing procedure is also very interesting and highlighting the problems of censorship in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation at that time. Throughout human history books were be banned, because of (political) content.
In Habsburg Royal Hungary Thomas von Trattern could not only elude censorship, but also print cost-effective, so that even famous poets and writers (Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Lessing, Wieland, Gellert ...) could be re-printed and were therefore more accessable to the public.
The current legal situation in Austria allowed a freer form of expression, but Thomas von Trattern saw himself walled in hostility by German printing offices, especially by Grant Printers of Leipzig (cf. Philipp Erasmus Reich).
It is a huge luck that so many great books survived censorship and withstand over different political systems. It is hard enough, that so many works are lost or just passed on in extract... After prayers, books are my favourite medium of conversation.
It gives me the strenght to survive the life, words are soothing balm, I lacked consulation throughout my childhood. I am so thankfull, that I can read and escape from physical circumstances and transcend into eternal fields.
"Der, den der Tod nicht weiser macht, hat nie ihm Ernst an ihn gedacht."
