The first chapter contains a character death and the whole story is quite dark. It begins at the beginning of Prisoner of Azkaban and is AU thereafter. Also note: this story is a "Snape is Harry's biological dad" story. This is not supposed to be the central theme of the story, but people have gotten annoyed that I didn't tell them at the beginning.

Remember Your Grandpa Mod Idea

Working on Immersive NPC Phone Calls mod, and when I got to Evelyn's phone calls, I started remembering my grandmother's stories of the olden days when she was a child. And Lilac and I have been brainstorming an idea for a mod that features Evelyn and George reminiscing about their childhood and teenage years growing up with the farmer's grandparents.

My grandparents were farmers during the Great Depression of the U.S. And my grandmother would tell me all kinds of stories about their parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles about how life was between 1890-1930. Her father built shrimp boats and her grandmother used to hand make fishing nets out of old parachutes.

Lilac and I would like to see a mod where the farmer is more of a part of a community. And where the farmer feels more of a connection to her grandfather. And where the farmer hears stories of the olden days where people sat on their front porches and the kids built forts in the woods.

Willie could talk about remembering his grandparents, etc.

This mod would not be started until I finish my Vampire Sebastian mod. But I will start collecting authentic anecdotes about how life was like for a poor farmer in the South of the U.S. to help the farmer remember his or her roots.

Practically all the previous chapter commentaries were made in preparation for the pivotal scene in chapter 10, so it is fitting that we return to having chapter commentaries now.

This chapter is an emotionally intense one for sure, and so it feels a little unfitting to cap it off with some more homework, but it is also really important to me to try and explain or portray these topics as best as possible, to give the readers as good of an understanding as I can.

Ultimately, I don't have any illusions to teach modern Chinese history. Who am I to teach it? What do I know? I only know bits and pieces here and there, told over late night peanut shells. But my goal in these notes, and this story, isn't to make scholars out of you. What I want most out of these commentaries is for you to understand Ye Ci.

Ye Ci, or Sun Yihan, is the antagonist in this story. No doubt about it. You lot picked up on that by now. But I don't want him to be a villain. Do you see what difference I'm drawing? He is not evil. I do not want to portray him as evil. Most of all, I do not want to write him as just 'the baddie.'

The fact of the matter is that, Ye Ci's childhood story is neither fiction nor rare. During that period, many young people were manipulated to turn in their parents to the authorities. Have you read 1984 by George Orwell? He mentions it there as well, about regimes where the children are taught that spying and turning in their parents was the right thing to do, encouraged. That was the case for China during the Revolution period as well. What were the children's motives for spying and turning in their parents? I think it could be a myriad of things, and not the same for each case. But for sure, it was something that the adults, the leaders, encouraged and ennobled.

And yes, in many cases, it led to the death of their parents. Sometimes by being beaten/lynched, but honestly, a lot of times by suicide. And the kids have to carry that for the rest of their lives.

In Ye Ci's flashback, the Four Olds are mentioned as something to be abolished. During the CR, anything that seemed remotely like the 'olden ways' of dynasty were encouraged to be destroyed. They were categorized in the 'four olds'--old customs, old culture, old ideas, and old habits. That's why Ye Ci's mother's classics had to be banned (fun fact, MZD loved some of the old classics, and kept reading them even though it was severely banned and destroyed elsewhere in the country. funny how that happens). That's why, if you have read up on modern history, many old temples and Buddha statues and graves were destroyed or desecrated. Old graves of emperors were dug up and desecrated. Several pieces of old art were destroyed. That's why you'll find that Taiwan has a really substantial collection of old Chinese art compared to China--some of the people who fled carried those pieces with them, else they would be destroyed.

How this campaign came to be, who was responsible, and where the line was drawn is not something I entirely understand so I cannot speak on it. Considering China still has a great expanse of ancient relics and architecture, it was evidently not so sweeping that everything was destroyed.

I want to also talking about the struggle session. The struggle session is the public spectacle that Ye Ci's mother was basically kangaroo court'ed in, before ultimately being beaten to death. Have any of you watched Netflix's Three Body Problem? The opening scene to that show is what a struggle session is. Basically, an open accusation of an undesirable person, often an intellectual but not limited to, where they are bound painfully and forced to wear demeaning accusations on their heads. Their spouses or family will then be called up to the stage and forced to denounce their loved one. Then they will get beaten, or further humiliated. Many people died by suicide afterward, because of the shame and suffering it wrought upon them.

This was a painful time in modern Chinese history. I did get nervous about taking the story into this direction when I was first planning it. I did not write Sun Yihan to be the antagonist that he was to sensationalize or vilify. I especially did not want to exploit history for the sake of entertainment. Without getting into the weeds of my inspiration, from the beginning and to the end of this story I cannot and will not vilify Ye Ci, and while you have the right to your opinions and reactions to the story, I can only ask that you do not either.

Frankly, George seems like he'd get along with a lot of the characters from canon. Bella, Emmett, Garrett, James, the Denali if he's cute, the newborns in The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, all come to mind right away as people who'd think George is a riot.

The Romanians would love him as well, I'm sure, and talk his ears full about how in the olden days, there was no notion of thrones belonging to anyone but vampires. Those were the days, George, and damn the Volturi!

Compton Business Encounters Social Justice

As local police are marginalized, the “marginalized” become ever more entitled. In the Los Angeles area, liberal utopia has been achieved. Good luck to capitalist oppressors trying to run a business:

A mob of over 100 looters purposefully crashed a Kia into a small bakery in Compton, Calif., before they flooded in and ransacked the store during a night of rampage on the streets earlier this week.

This same means of entry has been used in Chicago, which now has a mayor who sides with mobs of looters openly, instead of implicitly like most Democrats.

The thieves had gathered in the area for an illegal street takeover around 3 a.m. Tuesday before making the mile-long trek to Ruben’s Bakery & Mexican Food.

This could be why in the olden days the streets were policed rather than left to mobs of lowlife. But that was found to be racist.

Police had received two calls about a car on fire and a street takeover outside the bakery just before the looting occurred.

Maybe they thought better of intervening, lest an officer end up getting the Derek Chauvin treatment. It’s not as if any of the looters would be prosecuted anyway. Los Angeles County DA George Gascon was installed by George Soros, #1 bankroller of the Democratic Party.

No injuries or arrests were reported in Tuesday’s looting.

What are your thoughts on genderbending characters, particularly in regards to Umineko?

It's one of my favorite tropes, but I know that a lot of people don't feel comfortable with it, whether they find it disrepectful to the lgbtq+ communities or some other reason. Likewise, though, if not done with care in regards to a character's personality and circumstances, the opposite - making an au where a character (who isn't canonically, or it isn't known) is transgender - can be equally offensive.

Considering the matter of a person's physical sex, the interpretation of gender in Umineko, I'm curious how you would perceive it - especially since both 'tropes' can be used in tandem - and 1) I really really liked the way you portrayed Jessie and Yukari's situation in the story carries on' and 2) the fem Black Battler fic. Poor Battler, but Still. It was good!

I figured if anyone knew how to handle the matter tactfully, and in respect to the characters personality's and the situation, and the topic of being transgender vs outright genderbending, it would be you.

With genderbending I feel like it depends on context, what you want to do with it, and what you do with it. (Also I'm glad you liked those fics!)

In a lot of WTC works, characters have interesting relationships with gender (and sometimes sexuality) that can make genderbending more complicated. For example, genderbending Jessica to be a guy can be interesting. She feels pressured to get a boyfriend, but also feels like the reason why she doesn't have one is because she's too tomboyish and abrasive. She also has to deal with her mother wanting her to be a proper lady and find a nice (read: wealthy and powerful) husband for her. If Jessica was a man, 'he' may have more similar experiences to George - the looming prospect of an arranged marriage, the expectation to be the family Head rather than to marry man to be the Head, etc. His attitude may be construed as general laziness or lack of interest rather than tomboyish behavior. If someone is just drawing art of what they think a genderbent Jessica would look like, they don't need to delve into these aspects, but if someone wanted to write about Jessica, they'd need to consider these things.

This also becomes more complicated when you want to do ship content with a genderbend, because how the characters may be different would interact with how they see each other and potentially affect their dynamic. For example, Beatrice/Sayo's attraction to Battler may take on new rich connotations if Battler is a woman and not a man, or if Sayo conceptualized Beatrice as a male sorcerer rather than a female witch.

With regards to genderbends, I really like seeing art of them! And it would be nice to see more writing, too. I think people become worried about them because of how they can be used to erase the queerness of mlm or wlw ships, but I've known friends who like genderswapping their wlw ships to wlm from time to time. In the end I think we can't toss the trope out in general, or even when it's a mlm/wlw -> wlm swap, because sometimes people just want to explore things. Something being wlm can mean that they're still queer - bisexual, pan, etc. - but maybe in a different way.

...People also probably remember the "what if the story was all the same except this character was a GIRL" stories that had a lot of self-insert action, stereotypes, and poor writing from the olden days of fandom. But I think that's a quality and writing issue, not a general genderbend issue.

As for a character being transgender, I think it also needs to be done with care and thought put into it, the same way a genderbend might need. If a character is transgender, how will others feel about it? What sort of medical care will they be able to receive in their setting? Will they be closeted, socially transition, etc.? Depending on the setting, it might not be possible for that character to receive gender-affirming care. It might not even be possible for that character to "pass" as the gender they identify as. And that needs to be considered.

For example, if someone has a trans headcanon for an Umineko character, the character may need to leave Japan to receive surgery (I actually found an interesting paper while googling about this). If they're one of the younger characters, like Battler, one needs to consider if their parents will fund or approve, as they would not be able to access gender-affirming care without them. How would other members of the Ushiromiya family - which is shown to hold to strict gender roles and uphold capitalistic, cissexist, patriarchal ideals - react to someone transitioning?

...More specifically with Umineko is if someone wants to genderbend Sayo or one of their personas. I think that can be a difficult task, because of how complex Sayo's gender is, but I don't think it's impossible or should be disallowed, so long as people are willing to delve into the complexities of what it would mean for any particular genderbend. I'm not entirely sure about the idea of CAFAB Sayo transitioning to masculinity, due to how AFAB Sayo was used to make BeaBato and WillLion as cishet as possible in the past, but I think that so long as such a headcanon is coupled with queer exploration it's fine, albeit a bit touchy for me (perhaps a more subjective worry than objective, though).

For an example of a possible Sayo genderbend, bending Beatrice to be a man could be used to delve into more Sayo-Kinzo parallels, or conceptualize a more masc-leaning, or genderfluid, or nonbinary depiction of Sayo.

...In the end it's just about doing what you like, not minimizing the queer aspects as a result, and exploring what would happen if a character was a different gender all along or was transgender. It's about putting the work in to make me believe in you and your respect for the cast.

I realized I currently have three possible au's where Lando runs away. Although the last one isn't really him running away, but it is angst and involves Lando leaving and I have a short drabble about it from dm's with a friend so I'll leave that one out of this post but hmu if people want some werewolf pack angst....

Prince and the Pauper au

High society but olden times. Lando is the youngest child of the wealthy Button-Vettel family who are considered to be the highest of high society in their town. Jenson is a doctor, and Sebastian a philanthropist. They help a lot of the neighboring towns that are struck by poverty or cruel Lords. After Lando comes of age (21), his parents start pressuring him to marry but they won't let him marry for love. Both his older brothers, Charles and George, married for love but Lando had always been the sick child, the quiet one, the wallflower so Jenson decides that the best thing for Lando is for him to marry who they choose.

After he realises that they won't listen to what he wants or support his passions because he isn't scholarly like George or social like Charles, Lando runs away. He feels trapped in his own home and life and would rather go far away with no money to start a life of his chosing.

Pierre is a well known rogue who often steals from or blackmails rich Lords and landlords taking advantage of the less well off. He respects Jenson and Sebastian because they have funded his efforts in helping people before but he doesn't fully trust the rich after how he ended up orphaned. He is asked by Jenson and Sebastian to try find Lando and bring him (or his body if the worst has happened) home

ABO Pack au/ABO Angst au

Lando ran away from the pack he was born into the night he turned eighteen because they believed that omegas were property for marriage and breeding. His parents had arranged a mating for him to a man almost fifteen years older than him, who had put his hands on Lando before he was ever eighteen. They were abusive, and he his only chance at a better life was to run away and with the help of a beta in the pack, Lando escapes with all his documents.

A few years later, when he is twenty and finally gets enough money to go to university, he meets Max and Charles. The two omegas take a liking to Lando, and start to invite him to their pack that is run by unmated pack leaders Lewis and Ferando, and has Alex, George and Daniel as well. Lando slowly accepts them as pack and moves into the pack house but never discloses his full past to any of them....except Daniel who he later starts to secretly court.

When Dan is away, Lando thinks he spots someone from his past and grows anxious. When he attempts to seek out comfort from the pack, they all seem to be having a bad day and snap at Lando. They shove him away, tell him he's annoying or a nuisance, to leave tham alone because "some of us have jobs and aren't burdens to the pack" when Landos the only left in uni. The final straw is Lewis, the pack alpha, looses it when Lando accidentally breaks something and uses his alpha voice on Lando, calling him useless and telling him to get out of their sight because they don't want to look at him.

It just completely sends Lando into a spiral, and when everyone is asleep, he runs away, determined to start again and not hurt the pack anymore than he already has, not knowing that there are things in the dark waiting to hurt him.....
