me at my bookstore job to the 27th young adult straight edgy fantasy romance to come in this month
#full disclosure in case this blows up somehow because of booktok or something - IT'S NOT JUST BOOKTOK CRITICISM OR HET ROMANCE CRITICISM#this is me getting annoyed about the fact that the genre itself is oversaturated with too many of the same cookie cutter plot#girl in magic land meets guy and they hate each other but they don't really!!! but their love grows over the tides of the kingdom's war.....#<- THIS PLOT RIGHT HERE. I'VE SEEN FIVE SEPARATE AUTHORS DO THIS#and again - to clarify - it is NOT just booktok with this oversaturation issue#regular fiction is oversaturated with WW2/victorian era romance dramas - where the plot is good! but then A GUY SHOWS UP#AND THE WOMAN MUST MAKE A CHOICE..... TO SUPPORT HER CHILD OR LEAVE BEHIND HER OLD LIFE etc etc WE GET IT. FUCK.#and it's not just fiction too!!! the charts are oversaturated with crime novels in general right now#granted - most of them are good and try to be original - however there's just too many in the main chart#i won't list all of them to prevent drama - but in two past 'six new chart topper' deals - four were crime#and they haven't sold well. even bringing in popular authors didn't help them sell well#there needs to be a shake up. i don't want to be elitish or snobbish - PEOPLE CAN 100% WRITE WHAT THEY WANT#everyone's art is unique and beautiful because they did it#and they have the freedom to do so#but writers nowadays are falling too much into keeping with trends that it's actively tiring out consistent readers#write your fantasy novel - but lean into the worldbuilding. write your world war novel - but elaborate outside the characters.#write your fiction or crime - but try to vary up the beats of the plot to surprise readers more#stop trying to cater to what you l they want and what works - try and surprise them with something new and unexpected.#anyways rant over. i can talk about this for ages but i won't. but i could#spark talks about nothing of relevance#clip from the shadow the hedgehog rtfd 👍 thank you devil. from bible.

If I were in a crime drama or some sort of detective piece of media, I don’t want to be the main character, or even a side character… I want to own an Evil Boat. You know the one, the boat where shady men and women in various styles of black suits and dresses get together to discuss their various schemes whilst sipping from comically tiny champagne flutes, I want to own the boat they’re having those discussions on, particularly at dusk where sinister lighting frames their faces. They’ll be discussing their stuff and I’ll be somewhere in the far distance eating from a cheeseboard, and life would be good. I’d like to reiterate that I don’t endorse or support crime, but Evil Boat owner is my dream role.

Ever felt the pull of a shadowy city street? Noir fiction wraps readers in mystery and moral complexity. Check out this piece to learn why these tales still captivate:
Unmasking the Secrets of Noir and Hardboiled Fiction
By Lothar Tuppan
It’s Noirvember! Time to enjoy all things Film Noir, Roman Noir, Chocolat Noir, and Pinot Noir. Silly as that last sentence was, it does make plain that the French word “noir” just translates into English as “black.” So what exactly is “noir” in relation to cinematic (“Film Noir”) and literary (“Roman Noir”) fiction? What is its relationship with the, often associated, term “Hardboiled,” and what is its connections and relationship to Existentialism, Nihilism, and Philosophical Pessimism? This short essay is just a very brief introduction to a, surprisingly, complex topic. Whole books have been written on the subject (see bibliography below for some examples) and I encourage those who find the topic as fascinating as I do to pick them up.

Have a crackpot theory: the people who enjoy most of the new police procedurals that have been coming out recently just secretly wanna watch soap operas but don’t have the Guts
#this brought to you by my mother being physically pained by that new fbi show#I dunno what it’s called#she really liked the first seasons of Bones and Criminal Minds and the old CSIs#but the interpersonal drama in the new stuff physically repels her#and also me#I don’t watch them you see because I know they will not fulfill my desire to watch little guys quip and Solve a Problem anymore#I’m sure many show still do this!!#don’t get me wrong#but the amount of shows that ratchet up tension with Cheating Spouses and Personal Vendettas and such is SUSPICIOUS#guys just write the soap opera you so dearly desire to#leave me with the silly little dregs#I know they’ve gotta make the show interesting but there’s a line#once the drama starts coming from extraneous sources beyond the main Crime Solving Squadbyoi have gone too far for your genre#BaffledOcto#I was told to release this theory upon the internet#please don’t hurt me police procedural squad#basic police procedural: Evil Occurs and is Thwarted/Arrested/Avenged—End Scene#Soap Opera Police Procedural: Evil Occurs—Evil Occurs—Someones Wife leaves them—Morality crisis—the entire season has one continuous plot#both can be fun#but you can see the issue if you’re going in for a lil bit of Cathartic Justice and you accidentally trip into Seinfield Lite#you ever take a bite of pizza and accidentlaly drag off all the toppings at once? it’s like that#I will now cast an evil spell and summon the police procedural people so they can kick my teeth in#csi#bones#ncis#fbi#blue bloods#criminal minds

TAG GAME: FAV SHOWS
"your top 15 favourite tv shows can say a lot about your personality!"
@wangmiao (who is very talented and very kind) tagged me in this lovely thing which gives me an opportunity to list my fav shows and drama of all times! taking inspiration from kun’s system, I’ll put different fonts/colors for different categories:
cdramas, kdramas, jdramas, european dramas, american dramas (with the added bonus of a bold font for queer under/overtones but more often only from yours truly’s pov, so don’t come at me: cut is for mlm & smol is for wlw)
let’s go!
winter begonia (2020)
word of honor (2021)
poirot (1989-2013)
hannibal (2013-2015)
evilive (2023)
couple of mirrors (2021)
killing eve (2018-2022)
beyond evil (2021)
the devil judge (2021)
meet yourself (2023)
little women (2022)
h/ouse of the dragon (2022-?)
good omens (2019-?)
cherry magic (2020)
she loves to cook and she loves to eat (2022-?)
honorable mentions (either because I just started watching them and I really enjoy them so far OR bc I re-watched them frequently as a comfort show to rely on):
three body problem (2023) (just started, but it’s very thrilling so far *-*)
tomorrow (2002) (includes one of the few hetships I will be ride or die for)
my b/rilliant friend (2018-?) (it’s an italian series, very touching. could be gayer)
crash course in romance (ok maybe hets can have 2 spots in my heart alright)
business proposal (2022) (look. it’s not that great. couldn’t finish it. but Kim Se-jeong is amazing here)
fleabag (2016-2019) (it’s fleabag. what else there is to know)
castle (2009-2016) (around season 7 is not great but season 4 smashed)
coffee prince (2007) (can’t rewatch without crying but a classic: it is gay and it isn’t at the same time tho)
under the skin (2021) (Tan Jianci is great in this. some art history is *vague* but the series bangs)
b/erlin station (2016-2019) (i re-watch season 1 from time to time, but it do be triggering sometimes)
gentleman jack (2019-2022) (I just ogle at the pretty dresses most of the time but. neat)
begin again (2020) (in my heart this is about a lesbian woman and a gay man getting fake married for mutual benefits. it is not. it was too long for me to watch. I want Zhou Yutong to kabedon me on the daily. and she’s younger than me. I am fine)
tagging: @goaheadandflysomeplane and @fismoll7secinv and @amethystina (if they want to do it or if they just want smth to read, no pressure whatsoever!)
#didn’t add a couple of italian crime series bc they would be very niche for the rest of you ik#also I forgot to add a couple of kdramas that introduced me to the genre but#aside from that this should be all#I feel so much about dramas lately#maybe bc I won’t have much time to maximize my leisure time until next week most probably#which sucks major balls#I need to wake up in 5 hours oh god#thank you so much for tagging me!#the / is bc I do not need discourse on these shows. let me passively consume them sometimes it’s ok

I feel that acknowledging a piece of media as problematic and finding it worth engaging with are not mutually exclusive. And from that perspective, you know what’s a real fuckin’ interesting movie? Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997).
Like, okay. It was directed by notorious-right-winger Clint Eastwood. But it also features one of the most respectful (for the mainstream) depictions of a trans woman (and like, the actual person—it’s based on a true crime book and they got her to play herself) of its era.
And if that wasn’t enough, the villain is Kevin Spacey, playing a man who’s trying to use the closet as a defense for murder. Which is like… kinda on the nose?
Plus, it stars John Cusack, who gets to say the line “everyone down here is heavily armed and drunk; New York is boring.” And Jude Law is there. It’s a weird ride, but it’s a helluva movie. (It is 2 hours and 35 minutes long, though, so know that going in.)
#personal#midnight in the garden of good and evil#I got a degree in this shit#I might as well put some recs out there#but seriously#it’s a fascinating crime drama#one of the best of its genre/era#cos I love me a ‘90s crime movie
