Lesson 048: The Firstborn Isn’t Always the First Born

Genesis 48:19 - But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”

Jacob blessed both of Joseph’s sons and gave them each an equal share of his children’s inheritance.  In essence, Joseph received the blessing of the firstborn - a double share.  Why didn’t this blessing go to Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn son

Let’s read together Genesis 34:25; Genesis 35:22.

Reuben had sex with Jacob’s concubine Bilhah.  Even though Reuben was technically Jacob’s firstborn son, his immoral action disqualified him from receiving the blessing of the firstborn.

Simeon and Levi slaughtered the men of Shechem against the wishes of Jacob.  Even though they were the second- and third-born sons, they were disqualified from receiving the blessing of the firstborn.

Let’s read together 1 Samuel 16:11-13; Psalm 89:27; and Colossians 1:15.

The blessing of the firstborn does not always have to go to the firstborn son.  It is a blessing of preeminence.  David was the youngest of his brothers, but he was chosen to be the next king of Israel.  Jesus was not born or created because He is God.  However, the Bible calls Him the firstborn over creation because of His peerless superiority.

Let’s read together Genesis 48:14-18; Exodus 15:6; Psalm 16:11; Psalm 20:6; and Mark 14:62.

Why was Joseph unhappy with his father placing his right hand over Ephraim?  The right hand symbolized preeminence.  Joseph wanted the blessing of the firstborn to go to his firstborn son.  Manasseh was Joseph’s firstborn, so Joseph thought his father made a senile mistake.  

Let’s read together Genesis 25:13; Genesis 27:1-40; Deuteronomy 33:17; Isaiah 7:8, 7:17, 11:13; and Jeremiah 31:9.

Jacob had a prophetic vision that the tribe of Ephraim will eventually become greater than the tribe of Manasseh.  This is why he gave the greater blessing to Ephraim, despite Joseph’s protestations.

We do not have to be literally the firstborn child in our family or even descended from Abraham.  We can all receive God’s blessing as His children and become a spiritual child of Abraham.

The biblical story of Noah’s ark, depicted here, is found in the book of Genesis (6:9–9:28). To punish people for their wicked and violent ways, God decided to send heavy rains to earth for forty days and forty nights. First, however, he instructed Noah, a righteous man, to build an ark for his family and two of every kind of animal. After the rains stopped, a dove sent out by Noah returned to the ark with an olive branch, proof that the floodwater had receded and plants could grow again. Then God created a beautiful rainbow in the sky as a symbol of his promise to never destroy the earth again.

This painting by Edward Hicks shows a long, curving line of animals approaching Noah’s huge boat. Prancing horses and a serious-looking lion stare out at us, while pairs of elegant, black-and-white-striped zebras, giraffes, camels, tigers, and hippopotamuses stand patiently. In the distance, tiny black birds fly down from the dark, rain-filled clouds overhead.

Edward Hicks learned to paint decorative motifs when he was apprenticed to a coach maker at the age of thirteen. Later he became a successful sign painter and a devout Quaker preacher. Although his business conflicted with Quaker beliefs-that art is a distraction and a needless luxury-Hicks considered his art to be an expression of his faith and created paintings that told religious stories. This is the only painting he made of the story of Noah’s ark.

Lesson 040: Dealing with Disappointment

Genesis 40:23 - Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Joseph had dealt with so many trials and troubles in his young life.  He was abandoned by his brothers and sold into slavery.  He tried to make the best of his situation and live honorably for God.  Yet he was falsely accused of a crime and thrown into prison.

Despite all this, Joseph was still faithful to God and believed he would be delivered.  Joseph must have been excited to hear the chief butler was restored to his former position.  

Let’s read together Genesis 40:1-13.

The chief butler did not put in a good word to Pharaoh for Joseph.  The chief butler actually forgot about Joseph for two years.  

Joseph must have been very discouraged during that time.  Perhaps he thought God was going to deliver him using the chief butler, but nothing happened for two years.

Let’s read together Proverbs 3:5; Psalm 42:11; and Colossians 3:23-24.

Despite this setback, Joseph still believed in God.  Joseph knew God did not forsake him.  God blessed Joseph when he was in Potiphar’s household.  God even blessed Joseph in prison.

Let’s read together Psalm 27:14 and Galatians 6:9.

Just like Joseph, we need to learn how to wait on the Lord.

Numbers 13:25-33 (NLT). [25] “After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned [26] to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land. [27] This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces. [28] But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak! [29] The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.” [30] But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!” [31] But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!” [32] So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. [33] We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”

[2] All the Israelites went and complained to Moses and Aaron, telling them, “If only we'd died in Egypt, or here in this desert! [3] Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to get us killed? Our wives and children will be captured and taken away as slaves! Wouldn't we be better off going back to Egypt?” [4] They said to one another, “Let's choose a new leader and go back to Egypt.” [5] Moses and Aaron fell facedown on the ground in front of all the assembled Israelites. [6] Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, were there. They had been part of the group who had gone to spy out the land. They ripped their clothes, [7] and told the Israelites, “The country we traveled through and explored has very good land. [8] If the Lord is happy with us, he will take us there and give it to us, a land that's so productive it's like flowing with milk and honey. [9] Don't rebel and fight against the Lord. You don't need to be afraid of the people living there in the country—we can take them easily! They're defenseless and the Lord is with us. Don't be frightened of them!” [10] In reply all the people shouted out, “Stone them!” But the glory of the Lord suddenly appeared in the Tent of Meeting, right in the middle of the Israelites.”

“God is able to overcome any problem we face.”

“God told the Israelites to go and possess the land of Canaan. The people needed a place to thrive as a nation, and He chose an exceptionally good land for them.

So at the Lord’s direction, Moses sent 12 men to survey and spy out the area. What a surprise when 10 of them returned with unfavorable, alarming stories. Most of them could see only the obstacles. However, Caleb and Joshua were positive they’d “surely overcome” (Num. 13:30)—that was because they were focused on God’s promises rather than obvious difficulties. Their confidence was based on the Lord’s words to Abraham: “To your descendants I will give this land” (Genesis 12:7).

The rest of the Israelites didn’t share the two men’s faith—tales of giants and fortified cities scared them. Ordinarily, those would’ve been obstacles worth fearing. But their omnipotent God had proven He could overcome anything: He’d parted the Red Sea to facilitate their escape and fed them in the desert.

Focusing on obstacles distorts our vision. Then problems loom so large we can’t see to take the next step in faith. But if God has called us to do something, the reality we need to see is this: He’s already planned a way around, over, or through any barriers that might lie on the path to fulfilling His purpose for our life.”
