Pitch Perfect (2012) by Jason Moore

What are the social aspects within the film's narrative that align with the film's songs?
The film’s setting in a college aligns with the songs and narrative, as this enhances themes of social institution structures in regards to race, gender, and status. As Beca enters college with no friends, she tries to find a community through clubs that are rooted in the cliques and established ties. But, once she was discovered by Chloe, a member of the Bellas, she asks to audition for the acapella group due to the lack of members, leading Beca to audition and join the group. Through the Bellas', we see a mixed group of people with different backgrounds and personalities, leading Aubrey to try to change the groups differences to oneness. This brings Beca and Aubrey to be in constant division of each other, effecting the group's dynamic. These disagreements pass the borders of the off-stage and on-stage narrative, as quarrels that are based on their differing personalities are placed during their performances. But, as the narrative continues, they find community in each other through their love of music and singing together as a group. The film's focus on diversity and popular culture of the time through the connected genre of satirical comedy that is shown through both the characters and group relationships that connect to their college environment.
youtube
How do historiographies of previously recorded songs inform audience relationships with the musical's narrative and performers?
We see the different acapella groups use songs that correlate to their identities, as the TroubleMakers use songs that exert romance and desire through a male perspective that connects to their “bad boy” personalities and the Barden Bellas use songs that have been sung throughout the group's generations, which matches with their traditional looks that are expressed through their stage outfits, dance, and stuck-up personalities of some members. But, throughout the film, the relationship between the groups develops, and the final performances show a change in group dynamic that is expressed through song. We see these changes through their amping of their stage outfits, choreography, and choice of songs that range from "Price Tag" by Jessie J and "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull, Ne-yo, and Afrojack. Specifically, Beca's choice of singing "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds to send a message to Jessie, a member of the troublemakers, for a second chance, as the song is based off their time watching The Breakfast Club (1985). The chosen songs within the film are not merely to connect to the narrative, but rather the relationships of characters that are intertwined with songs that represent their growth individually and together as a group.
youtube
What musical genre/style drives the film's score, and how does the genre/style (re)define the film as a musical?
Through Beca's help, the group decides to ditch the songs of tradition and mix songs of different genres that reflects on Beca's background of DJing and aspirations of music production. This reflects the film's intentions of performing songs that are based on mixing of songs in the form of acapella. This comes with different stylistic sounds within each group and the creation of a refreshing take on the expanding genre of musical. A particular scene of the film known as the "Riff Off" is a game played by the acapella groups, as a chosen genre is picked and groups must sing songs in the genre and find a flow within each song that is sung through continuation of lyrics and beat. This game mirrors the idea of mixing songs, whilst using acapella as a way to create melody. This shows a modern take on musicals, as these genres were gaining popularity during this time.

Daily Devotionals for November 22, 2024
Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living
Devotional Scripture:
Proverbs 28:21-22 (KJV): 21 To have respect of persons is not good: for a piece of bread that man will transgress. 22 He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him. Proverbs 28:21-22 (AMP): 21 To have respect of persons and to show partiality is not good, neither is it good that man should transgress for a piece of bread. 22 He who has an evil and covetous eye hastens to be rich and knows not that want will come upon him.
Thought for the Day
Verse 21 - Our heavenly Father is always loving and just. He desires us to be like Him. In the Bible, one notices that God blesses some people more than others. He does not show favoritism, but His blessing is determined by how much of His Word we apply to our lives. He always blesses His Word, upholds His Word, and favors those who obey it. God is no respecter of men, but He does respect His Word (Acts 10:34-36). What He will do for one He will do for another when there is a response of faith to Him and His Word. If we are to be like Him, we must not treat anyone with prejudice because of their social status, position of authority, race, age, or gender. We must treat everyone fairly, as God does. "...If there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor...If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors" (James 2:2,7-9).
The "royal law" of James 2:8 which says, "If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well" and the "golden rule" of Luke 6:31 instruct us to love all people as we love ourselves: "And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise."
Neither are we to give the rich special attention nor to despise and ignore the poor. Rich or poor, we are all created in God's image, and every believer is an heir to the promises in His Word. In the Spirit, there are no races, social levels, or gender distinctions; we are all one in Christ (Galatians 3:26-29). Since we have different assignments from God, we fill different roles in life. Some positions, such as those of church or state government which affect and influence many lives are more important than others. However, the people filling those positions are no more important to God than the poorest men. God highly values the lives of all men and women.
Verse 22 - People who are driven to get rich quickly often use any means of pursuing wealth. This will eventually leave them impoverished. One can be poor in more than finances; for a man who has no peace, who cannot sleep at night and is in a constant state of stress is a poor man indeed.
Prayer Devotional for the Day Dear heavenly Father, I am grateful that You are a fair and just God and that You love all of us equally. I am amazed at Your love for each of us as individuals. You are wonderful! Lord, may we be like You, and treat all people with the same love and respect. Lord, deliver Your people from any prejudicial attitudes and actions. May we lift one another up and be kind to one another, as You are kind to us. Grace us so that we can do unto others as we would have them do unto us. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Democratic Party has very slowly seen their grip on Asian, Hispanic and Black voters slipping as of late. There are many nuanced, complex reasons for this. Here’s some fascinating data from Pew Research:
66% of Black Democrats believe sex is immutable and assigned at birth.
62% of Black Americans believe race should NOT be a factor in college admissions.
38% of Black Americans believe police funding should be INCREASED; 38% believe funding should remain as is; only 23% want it decreased.
In 2021, 65% of Black Americans believed that increased attention given to inequality had NOT led to changes for the better for Black Americans.
64% of Black adults feel that the ‘racial reckoning’ and focus on identity has NOT led to positive changes.
Only 29% of Black Democrats identify as ‘liberal’ within the party. (Compared with 55% of Whites.)
Currently, there has been a roughly 11% drop in Black voter support of the Democratic Party, dropping from 90% to 79%.
55% of Black Americans believe Democrats should work hard to find common ground with Republicans, versus only 41% who feel Democrats should proceed with their agenda no matter what.
***All this data seems to make one thing clear: White lefties are turning Black voters off, big time. If white liberals keep being paternalistic and keep ignoring what Black voters actually want, and how these voters think and feel, Dems are going to be in trouble.
Of course what I’m presenting here is only one angle on a complicated story. 63% of Black adults, according to Pew (source #9 below) still feel that racism is a major problem, and 60% feel that police brutality is. And there’s more in this vein. I’m not trying to oversimplify the case or cherry-pick or be one-sided. In general, Black Americans still vastly favor the Democratic Party broadly (though they’re generally more moderate).
I’m simply pointing out that this demographic seems to clearly *not* like the direction the Democratic Party is moving. We should pay attention to this.

People forget that black Americans tend to be more conservative on average, slower to leave religion, less likely to subscribe to the fashionable, postmodern ramblings of the privileged, elite class.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora Ideas(Needs):
•Romance Options for all genders and sexualities. Adoption
• Houses, Pens, Animal Taming of all the animals: Viperwolves, Thanators, Cloaked Panthers, Zeswa(regional), keeping a herd of direhorses, Ikran Rooksry, etc
•Gardening and Plant genetic engineering(maybe using Eywa instead of technology - for animals too). Being able to plant stuff
• Way more Ikran skills: we should have one where we can attack people on the ground with the Ikran. Another one where the Ikran will help us fighting enemies if we’re not on it - helicopters, Amp Suits, etc. They should have skills for all the animals to do. Like retrieving spare parts, hunting, and stuff. We should also be able to have custom names and skins for them - like the warframe systems.
•more communal stuff: maybe some religious modes - going to the underworld or Eywa, and visiting your sister, mother, etc. Making murals, cave paintings, making totems, weaving/dyeing, more cooking and cooking with more than 2 ingredients. Festivals, Hunts, foraging events, Ikran/direhorse races with clans, etc.
•New enemies: Some of them should be Avatars
•Seeing animals being birthed; infant and juvenile animals. An animal birthing mechanic like the gathering mechanic could be interesting - if not gross.
•Alma and some other resistance members teach Na’vi human braiding styles.
•Apple Music/Spotify plugin to the walkie talkie. Idk. I want Blaque and 702 playing in game while I’m grinding, and the Na’vi going “what is that amazing sound?!”
•A Way of Water update! Hello?!
•More storage space all around. Honestly if we could just have the ability to switch between ALL of our weapons in combat, and have a much bigger weapon wheel, the game would be less tedious.
• humane traps for hunting.
Quests:
•Eetu: he saves an orphaned Ikran or a trapped Ikran and that becomes his new Ikran.
•Adoption: We find an RDA storage of empty avatars. The bodies lack consciousness and are still infantile to childlike, as the RDA had to evacuate before they could finish growing them. We take them and give them to Eywa. She imbeds them with consciousness and we have to either ask the clans to take some in as their own, or they become the new members of the Sarentu Clan. This would play into the romance mechanic. Ooh like your child being a reincarnation of Aha’ri the way they did with Grace.
•The Sarentu Clan: Alma manages to get the resources and tech to create avatars for the Resistance. Giving them a huge advantage over the RDA. Considering that they have no way of getting home, many decide to permanently take up Avatar bodies and put their human bodies on Ice - using them infrequently in the labs. Or the Resistance is attacked and many are killed but Eywa transfers their consciousnesses into Avatars - ones she’s absorbed due to us overtaking Avatar bases and whatnot. Many of the Resistance Members become new members of the Sarentu. The Sarentu kids and the ancestors teach them our ways, but we also don’t feel so alone anymore because the people we know are now family, and share our blend of human and Na’vi culture. They end up Repopulating the Sarentu Grounds too.
•Being able to introduce our clan members to stuff and take them on first experiences would be cool. Like me being able to take Nor, Ri’nela, Teylan,(and other resistance members), on their first flight, hunt, etc, would be so cute. This could be cool as a co-op option too.
•Some quest where we meet Jake Sully and call him out for being a white savior.

this is an indie & extremely private ZANT from LEGEND OF ZELDA: TWILIGHT PRINCESS. portrayal is more canon divergent, playing on dark themes. i write zant as MUCH more unhinged and delusional. there will be topics such as: obsession, madness, and forms of political repression, hunger for power, narcissism. WRITER: nelinha, 27, she/her. ** blog is slow activity, please be patient!
blog heavily affiliated with: @trireign & @lordghira ( * please note that for the most part those who are my affiliates are exclusives for me, in rare cases i make exceptions. )
TEMPT RULES AND ABOUT BELOW. carrd is a work in progress.
01. i'm going to be very picky with who i follow / follow back. i plan to only be following those that i desire to write with, if you follow me and i don't see us writing together then i'll softblock. don't take this personally, i'm a busy person irl so i prefer a clean and slow dash.
02. i don't consider myself a LOZ expert, in fact i'm really not. much of my lore knowledge doesn't extend far beyond twilight princess! so when it comes to writing with canon LOZ characters that aren't within twilight princess i may require some plotting! i'm a work in progress with any lore beyond twilight princess, i just really love zant & always have. i also write zant as neurodivergent.
03. i'm not holding back with my portrayal of zant. i'm amping up the dark themes, really expanding on his personality as well! he's delusional, absolutely consumed with madness and a hunger for power.
04. i'm 25+ so it makes me BEYOND uncomfortable when people below 18 follow me. for the sake of my comfort? i won't be following anyone under the age of 18.
05. SHIPPING? yes. WILL IT BE EASY? no. i'm very open to the idea of shipping zant, and it's possible just... not going to be easy, and will more than likely be very toxic. i don't see any "fluff" coming fron zant, and any ship with him will certainly be dark. he's emotionally a disaster, and very self absorbed in his goals and desire for power. DO NOT FORCE ME TO SHIP. i'm open to it but respect my wishes if i don't think the ship with your muses is meant to be. SHIPPING IS NOT MY GOAL HERE, I DON'T PLAN TO FOCUS ON SHIPS.

According to the exit polls I found from NBC, 78% of black men voted for Harris while 52% of white women voted for Trump.
Patriarchy and male privilege exist, but so does intersectionality. Ignoring factors like race and other marginalizations to single in on gender and justify treating men as a monolith is the opposite of acknowledging reality. It’s ignoring the nuance of reality to make extreme ideologies and fundamentalist ideology more appealing.

garden variety conservative transphobia is going to get worse but radical feminism is also going to get worse. if youre a cis women terfs are going to try to recruit you and make you believe that the reason your rights are at stake is because of trans people. they're going to tell you that all men are your violent oppressors and they're going to include trans women in that category. they're gonna tell you about women who are gender traitors and joined the enemy and they're going to point to trans men. don't believe them. trans people are not your enemy, we have no power over you, and we desperately need your support and your solidarity.
be aware of radfem pipelines and dog whistles too. be skeptical of anyone that talks about the divine feminine or correlates birthing, menstruating, or female reproductive organs with womanhood. be especially skeptical of people who use those biological things as reasons to why women are more spiritual, or more in tune with nature, or just that they're better than men (read: anyone they decide is a man)
radical feminism is an expected reactionary outcome from cis women who are being oppressed by conservatives, especially when all they practice is ciscentric, liberal, white feminism. they feel the need to be radicalized but don't have the experience and information to pinpoint the true source of their suffering. trans people are not your enemy, AMAB people are not your enemy, anyone who identifies as a man is not your enemy. we're all being crushed under the same stone

Week 9
youtube
"Summer of Soul" is a documentary directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, which delves into the vibrant and culturally significant 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Despite featuring legendary performances by icons like Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and Sly and the Family Stone, the festival remained largely overshadowed by Woodstock, which occurred the same summer.
This documentary tackles the pressing social issue of historical erasure, particularly within Black communities. It questions why the Harlem Cultural Festival, a monumental event celebrating Black music and culture, received scant attention compared to its contemporaries like Woodstock.
"Summer of Soul" employs a multifaceted storytelling approach, combining archival footage, interviews with attendees and performers, and compelling musical performances to shed light on this issue. Through its narrative, the film reveals systemic biases and sheds light on the overlooked cultural contributions of Black Americans, serving as both a historical documentary and a celebration of Black excellence.
"Summer of Soul" unveils a previously obscured narrative in American cultural history, exposing the dynamic artistic and political energy of the Harlem Cultural Festival. This revelation has sparked widespread discourse about the erasure of Black cultural achievements and the necessity of acknowledging and preserving them. By bringing this story to light, the documentary has prompted critical discussions about historical neglect and the importance of recognizing and honoring Black cultural heritage. Its impact extends beyond the film itself, contributing to a broader reevaluation of the historical narratives that shape our understanding of American culture.
Personally, "Summer of Soul" was a profound experience that deepened my appreciation for the richness of Black cultural history. The performances were not only electrifying but also served as poignant expressions of resilience and defiance in the face of systemic oppression. I was shocked by the extent to which such a significant cultural event had been overlooked and inspired by the resilience and creativity of the artists and organizers involved. This film has fundamentally changed my perspective, highlighting the importance of amplifying marginalized voices and challenging dominant narratives.
"Summer of Soul" has elevated the reputation of the Harlem Cultural Festival, positioning it alongside other iconic music festivals of the era. By centering Black cultural contributions and showcasing the significance of events like the Harlem Cultural Festival, the documentary has played a vital role in reshaping perceptions of American cultural history. Furthermore, the film has reignited conversations about the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equity, reinforcing the importance of acknowledging and celebrating Black heritage.
"Summer of Soul" proved to be a transformative moment for director Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's career, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and talented storyteller. The documentary also marked a milestone in expanding gender and racial representation in storytelling, amplifying the voices and experiences of Black artists and communities on a mainstream platform. Through its groundbreaking approach to storytelling, "Summer of Soul" has set a new standard for inclusive and authentic representation in documentary filmmaking.
Reviews and Quotes
The Guardian: Mark Kermode, an Observer film critic, hails it as “an absolute joy”. The film showcases pulse-racing, heart-stopping live music footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural festival, which had remained largely unseen for half a century. While iconic documentaries like Woodstock and Gimme Shelter have long been celebrated, Summer of Soul surpasses them, revealing a festival that was somehow written out of the history books. The festival featured luminaries like Stevie Wonder, Mavis Staples, and Nina Simone at the height of their performing powers. Director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson masterfully intertwines music and politics, creating one of the best concert movies of all time. The festival took place in Mount Morris Park, Harlem, during a time of profound cultural re-evaluation, just a year after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. The film blends wry laughter with piercing insight, exploring how the term “Black” shifted from a fighting-talk term of abuse to one of self-determination and pride. It’s a must-watch for anyone interested in music history and Black culture.
Rotten Tomatoes: "Critics and audiences alike appreciate how Summer of Soul deftly interweaves incredible live footage with revealing interviews. The film captures the spirit and context of a watershed moment while firmly tying it to the present. It’s not just music history; it’s Black history. The invitation to “come home” resonates with viewers who want to relive the coming of age of Black music."
That Shelf: "The film is a powerful reclaiming of lost history. When watching, one feels as if they are experiencing something magical and transcendent. By drawing parallels to today’s racial reckoning, Summer of Soul serves as a necessary reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the perseverance of a community."

Required reading for anyone who uses "learn intersectionality" in their arguments, maybe first *you* should learn intersectionality directly from the woman who coined the term in the first place and understand black theory and CRT before opening your mouths.
I'm taking the word "intersectionality" away from internet discourse and putting it on the shelf until people learn that the meaning is "the sum of your identity can not be split into pieces and sorted neatly into easy-to-understand boxes because each piece influences the rest" and not "these people are The Most Oppressed"

Daily Devotionals for November 22, 2023
Proverbs: God's Wisdom for the Day
Devotional Scripture:
Proverbs 28:21-22 (KJV):
21 To have the respect of persons is not good: for a piece of bread that man will transgress.
22 He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.
Proverbs 28:21-22 (AMP):
21 To have respect for persons and to show partiality is not good, neither is it good that man should transgress for a piece of bread.
22 He who has an evil and covetous eye hastens to be rich and knows not that want will come upon him.
Thought for the Day
Verse 21—Our heavenly Father is always loving and just. What He will do for one, He will do for another when there is a response of faith to Him and His Word. If we are to be like Him, we must not treat anyone with prejudice because of their social status, position of authority, race, age, or gender. We must treat everyone fairly, as God does. “… If there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath, not God chose the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor… If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors” (James 2:2,7-9).
The “royal law” of James 2:8 says, “If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well” and the “golden rule” of Luke 6:31 instructs us to love all people as we love ourselves: “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”
Some positions, such as those of church or state government, which affect and influence many lives, are more important than others. However, the people filling those positions are no more important to God than the poorest men. God highly values the lives of all men and women.
Verse 22—People who are driven to get rich quickly often use any means of pursuing wealth. This will eventually leave them impoverished. One can be poor in more than finances; for a man who has no peace, who cannot sleep at night, and is in a constant state of stress is a poor man indeed.
Prayer Devotional for the Day
Dear heavenly Father, I am grateful that You are a fair and just God and that You love all of us equally. I am amazed at Your love for each of us as individuals. You are wonderful! Lord, may we be like You, and treat all people with the same love and respect. Lord, deliver Your people from any prejudicial attitudes and actions. May we lift one another and be kind to one another, as You are kind to us. Grace us so that we can do unto others as we would have them do unto us. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

If one is a Christian & a Republican is being "progressive" even possible for them?? Be 100% honest via /r/atheism
If one is a Christian & a Republican, is being "progressive" even possible for them?? Be 100% honest So I've known this person for a few months now. They write fan fiction and are very active on Tumblr. But their writing has always rubbed me the wrong way. Especially when it comes to depictions of men and women, Japanese people, familial relations and friendships. I tried to brush it off, telling myself it was "just fiction," but something never sat right with me. I did some digging and it turns out they're both Republican and a Christian. But online they act like they're so supportive and "open minded." Is it all just a facade? And in case you're wondering, no they're not a teenager or a young adult. They are well into their 30s and have a stable job, unlikely to be using this as an "escape." What do y'all think?? And have you met somebody who thought they could bring religion to everyone through writing, by hiding their rhetorics in stories?? What I mean by progressive is not having backwards or outdated views on sexuality, gender, races, equality, abortion, immigration, relationships, etc Thank you for reading & responding in advance! 1. Current state of social media ethics and two related cases:
⁃ Two current states of social media ethics are the issues with users privacy settings, fake news/misinformation,and online bullying like people getting canceled.
⁃ Two recents cases include facebooks mishandling of users dates and twitter trying to ban political figures like former president Donald Trump from their platform.
2. Brands/professionals with strong social media ethical codes:
- Best Buy- any race, ethnics, sex, gender, religion, disability comments are not allowed .
⁃ Walmart-doesn’t discourage employees from sharing their own opinions whether politics or religion but do it politely.
⁃ Ford-ford tells everyone from co-workers to suppliers to competitors to “mind your manners” and treat everyone with respect.
3. Key concepts for personal conduct online:
Respect- be nice to anyone and everyone especially in the online world because once you post or say something it stays forever.
Empathy- think about how something could affect an individual or anyone in general and think about what they maybe going through.
Privacy- always keep work life and social media separate. Don’t post about work be mindful of information you share online and think will this hurt or affect someone?
Critical thinking- before posting or sharing something always double check and verify that you have the correct information before you post to avoid spreading false information.
- Integrity: Always be honest and transparent about what you are saying and take responsibility for your actions and words that could affect or offend someone.
4. Concepts to avoid on social media:
Hate speech- don’t say anything that could be offensive such as racial comments, discrimination or anything in a hateful manor.
Trolling- don’t engage in behavior that can be considered offensive, disrespectful, ignorant.
Misinformation- try and double check or fact check your information before you post to make sure it’s accurate so it doesn’t show misinformation or inaccurate information especially if it’s important.
Cyberbullying- don’t engage or support in any form of online harassment or bullying.
5. Core concepts for practicing social media professionals:
1. Be yourself- I think it’s important for online influencers to be their true and 100% authentic self. It helps fans connect and relate to your connect rather than faking and trying to act perfect it helps gain trust.
2. Avoid talking about certain topics- this is a difficult one because on one hand you wanna be honest with your fans but at the same time not everyone agrees with what people say. Depending on your platform try and avoid talking about certain topics such as politics or keep it mutual because if people find out you support certain people like trump you can get canceled, and people are nasty with their comments so be careful about what you say when it comes to certain topics.
3. Don’t be problematic or engage in bullying behavior. No one wants to support someone who doesn’t support or uplift others.
4. Be active on your media platforms. Always update and post on platforms to make sure all your audiences can watch you and not just on one specific app.
5. Engagement- try and engage with your fans it makes them feel heard and seen and makes them feel like you care for them.
6. Planning- plan a set time to when you post content so fans can be updated instead of randomly posting it won’t get that much of an audience unless you plan when you post so others can follow.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M University announced Friday that its president has resigned after a Black journalist’s celebrated hiring at one of the nation’s largest campuses unraveled following pushback over her diversity and inclusion work.
Banks has told The Texas Tribune this month that pushback had surfaced over her hiring at A&M because of her work on race and diversity in newsrooms.
McElroy’s 20-year career at the New York Times included research into the relationship between news media and race, notably in newsroom practices, Pulitzers, obituaries and sports.
McElroy did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday, but she told the Tribune that she felt, “damaged by this entire process” and that she believed she was “being judged by race, maybe gender. And I don’t think other folks would face the same bars or challenges.”
The Rudder Association, which describes itself as a collection of Texas A&M students, former students, faculty and staff who are “dedicated Aggies committed to preserving and perpetuating the core values and unique spirit of Texas A&M,” has acknowledged complaining about McElroy’s hiring to the school administrators.
“TRA believes that a department head should embrace the egalitarian and merit-based traditions that characterize Texas A&M’s values, rather than the divisive ideology of identity politics,” the group wrote last week.
McEloy’s original job offer to revive Texas A&M’s journalism program, which was celebrated on campus with a “signing party,” was later changed from a tenure-track position, to a five-year role, then to a one-year job from which she could be fired at any time.
McElroy, a 1981 Texas A&M graduate, declined the changes and the job offer, deciding instead to stay on as a professor at the University of Texas.
