Take a tour through the Rat’s Nest Cave and enjoy the beauty of it. It is an archaeological site with ancient paintings and beautiful cave formations. It is one of the longest caves in Canada. 

Gondola ride on Sulphur mountain

The Sulphur Mountain houses hot springs on its lower slopes. The gondola goes up to the summit ridge on the eastern slope, which has two restaurants, a gift shop and observation decks. You can see a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains, the Bow Valley and the town of Banff. The Gondola car holds four people and it is glass enclosed, offering a 360 degree view throughout the ride. There are various boardwalk trails leading to scenic mountain views in every direction. 

The ammonite factory

  Ammolite is a rare gemstone found in southeastern Alberta that comes from the shells of fossilized ammonites. It is special for its full spectrum of colours and pearly sheen and is the gemstone of Alberta. The Ammonite Factory gets its ammonite from the Red Dragon Mine and has a yield that surpasses any other ammonite mine. MEET THE TEAM: MARTINE AND BENEDICTE LAVOIE OF PIERRES DE CHARME INC. 

After working in real estate for thirty years, Martine Lavoie decided to change course and pursue an entirely new career—gemmology. After completing her classes at The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), the world's longest established provider of gem and jewellery education, Martine founded Pierres de charme Inc., specializing in the sales of gems and precious stones, in 2012.

"In the beginning, the gem market in Montreal wasn't quite as important so I spent a year building my customer base in Halifax, Vancouver, and Calgary. It happened one brick at a time. Slowly you meet people, you give great service, and you get good reviews. I eventually began reaching out of Montreal, I moved my business out of my home and into an office, and then my daughter joined the team."

Bénédicte Lavoie pursued her studies in gemmology after completing a Bachelor's degree in HR management and was awarded the internationally recognized title of FGA-Merit (Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain). She joined Pierres de charme Inc. 2015 and has been working in the industry full-time for the past six years.

"Our interests are very complimentary. I love travelling and the business side of the industry, whereas my daughter is very interested in mining and cutting. We try to know everything about our gems, from beginning to end."

Every six months, the mother-daughter gem dealers visit their clients in Quebec City, Halifax, Fredericton, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver; and eight jewellery schools in Canada. They also travel the world to continue forging and strengthening ties with respected suppliers in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Burma, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and East Africa.

"It's a strong and active community of people. We all share, rather than compete, to make it work. It's a world of gratefulness and honour. You don't see a stone the same way when you see all the work that goes into finding it. These are not manufactured gems, they take millions of years to create and are so rare to find. It's like a piece of art from the earth."

WORK WE LOVE: A BIRD’S NEST RING FOR LOUISE LACEY-ROKOSH 

Louise Lacey-Rokosh first met Ellinor at the Calgary Rowing Club, almost seven years ago, which is how she discovered EVStenroos signature design — the Bird's Nest Ring.

"I had been collecting rings from relatives for a while. My Great Aunt Ruby, Aunt Phillis, Aunt Gladys, and Great Uncle Bill all left me solitaires in their wills that I wanted to make into something special. Since each diamond is a different shape and cut, I knew combining them into one ring would make the design quite random but it's perfect for Ellinor's Bird's Nest Ring."

After their initial meeting, Ellinor sent Louise four designs. With a few modifications and help from family, she chose the first rendering.

"I call it my wrinkly love ring, and I think Ruby, Phillis, Gladys, and Bill would be pleased to see me wearing it. I understand why Ellinor has won awards for this design. It's beautiful, and unique and working with her is so easy."

Not only is Louise an avid rower, who competed in the 2019 World Rowing Masters Regatta in Hungary, but she is also an artist with a BFA in painting and a double master's in Architecture and Architectural Technology.

"I had a dream job, I was living in London and working as a Senior Design Architect with some of the best architects in the world but, in 2005, I knew it was time to leave and paint full-time instead."

Although her inspiration is always changing, Louise looks to artists, like Edmond Praybe, Zoey Frank, and Maggie Siner, who leave their "handwriting", their personal, identifiable brushwork on their paintings.

"The power of their mark-making is what stands them apart from other artists. You can tell their work anywhere, anytime."

Louise has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows, and her paintings reside in private collections across Canada, the USA, and England. WORK WE LOVE: KING, A 20TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY COMMISSION

When a client approached EVStenroos to commission a silver sculpture for his 20th wedding anniversary, Ellinor couldn't say no, especially since she was given total control over the project. After learning that the couple lived by a lake in Calgary, in a cape-code inspired home, Ellinor drafted 10 different design proposals — three of which are pictured above. "While all the designs are based around a marine theme, the final version of King is inspired by the reflection of canoes that are always tied to a dock I see when I am out rowing. I imagined what it would look like to view the bottom of a canoe, submerged in water, from the bottom of a lake."

To elevate the sculpture, but keep it organic and abstract, Ellinor added a wheat-like stem to the bottom which then connects to a wooden base, complete with an engraved plaque.

"While I designed the entire piece, I didn't physically make it. My studio is not large enough to handle this type of project nor is it equipped with all the necessary tools. MEET THE TEAM: BAYOT HEER, INTERNATIONAL AWARD-WINNING GOLDSMITH

In 1992, after studying furniture-making and architectural design, Bayot switched his focus to jewellery design and had the privilege of training and working with a goldsmith in Europe before coming to Canada.

"I had originally wanted to learn the trade so I could incorporate metalsmithing and stonework into my furniture designs, but I instantly liked jewellery-making more because of the control it gave me over my work."

Bayot’s jewellery is characterized by clean lines, unexpected shapes, textures and dazzling colours. Each piece is individually designed and hand crafted from the finest gemstones and precious metals, with a focus on 18 karat gold.

Bayot began working with Ellinor twelve years ago, before she even launched her own brand.

"I met Ellinor when she was the general manager of a jewellery store and have been working with her ever since. She has great, fun and challenging ideas and is very inspiring on a personal and professional level. We always have a good laugh when we are together. Working with EVStenroos also allows me to work on different designs than my own, and experience more of the retail side of the industry since I primarily work with galleries."
