This post is inspired by @romancedream, who makes really good points about psychic powers on this post: https://www.tumblr.com/romancedream/744561229253705728/so-psychic-abilities-it-is-strongly-hinted-in
I hope they explore Xavier’s and Wednesday’s psychic powers in S2, and the idea that their powers are unreliable.
I don’t see the visions as objective vs. subjective, more confirmed and unconfirmed to be psychic visions. Wednesday’s visions are confirmed visions because other people can conveniently confirm the visions are of the past (Goody and Pugsly). She also has future visions come to pass.
If she didn’t have Goody, Pugsly, or her parents to confirm her visions of the past and give context, then she’d have no clue what she was looking at or what any of it meant. If Weems had happened to take an alternate route to avoid the accident, then Wednesday wouldn’t have gotten confirmation of her vision of the grocer. Without that confirmation, could she have simply thought his broken neck was wishful thinking or an intrusive thought?
She also knows they’re for sure visions because they happen during waking hours. Unless she has PTSD, then there’s a clear delineation between a vision and reality. Not only does she mentally go somewhere else, she describes a feeling of electroshock. She has a physical manifestation of her powers.
I think Xavier is correct as psychic visions are unreliable in either situation, the unreliability comes from their limited POV, and both instances are subject to their interpretation of what they think they’re seeing and if they happen to have corroborative evidence.
He correctly points out the severe limits to their powers.
Regardless of if it’s a vision of the past, future, or a link to someone, each only has a) a few seconds of one moment in time and b) from their own POV. This is naturally limiting, because neither has any context in the moment of the vision, and they only get context once the vision has come to pass, or they have someone to further explain or confirm.
With Wednesday, she appears to be pre and post cognitive, she sees events of the past (Goody, Pugsly, Garret’s real cause of death, and Tyler attacking Kinbott) and future (death of the grocer and Rowan). Sometimes she has context, such as with the Pugsly’s bullies, other times she does not: the grocer who she sees gets a broken neck. She has no idea when this event will happen or what causes it. The same with Rowan’s death.
In both cases, the vision came to pass regardless of if she tried to prevent it or not.
We see she did absolutely nothing to warn the grocer, probably because he was rude and she didn’t know him. He died absent any intervention from her.
She did, however, try to save Rowan from his fate. She ran into the woods to warn him of the vision she had. But the question is, if she hadn’t followed Rowan into the woods and given Tyler a chance to turn into the Hyde, would Rowan still have died? Did she doom Rowan because she tried to save him? Because if she had stuck to her plan to run away, then Tyler would have driven her to the train station and possibly would have tried to kill her given what we know, but Rowan would have been left alone in the woods.
This is another aspect of unreliability, because there's no way to tell if their actions have any meaningful impact.
With Xavier, it is less confirmed because his visions happen in a dream, and we don’t know if he knows the monster in his dream is real, or if he’s just having a nightmare. This could be a new aspect of his powers that he is also just discovering. We also don’t know what his dreams consisted of. Is he seeing the monster attack its victims as they happened or before they happened, like Wednesday’s waking visions? Or is he simply seeing the monster in the dreamscape separate from anything that happened in reality? Does he see scattered images and have a nebulous feeling or vibe from the dream? Or are they like Wednesday’s where you’re more or less dropped into a scene and watch it play out? We as the audience are not given this information.
Yes, Xavier drew the monster because it was a reoccurring dream, but he also had a really bad run in with Tyler and Xavier expresses himself through art. With Kinbott as his therapist and who had shown herself to be dismissive of Outcast powers and utterly incompetent as an Outcast therapist, she herself could have convinced Xavier his dreams were just dreams. Visions might not have occurred to her at all. Xavier might not know psychics can have more than one ability. Perhaps he thought the monster was a manifestation of his fears and humiliation at the hands of Normies.
Also, if Xavier never witnesses the events in his dream or the images in real life, then he can’t compare them to his dream and realize they’re visions. We have no evidence that Xavier has had any other dream vision, nor that he has ever been confronted by one of his visions.
Xavier never comes face to face with the Hyde, does he ever find out the monster he drew is real?
I don’t want to say both of their vision powers are useless, but they definitely have a Cassandra’s Curse kind of flavor to them. lol

Just had to post this again because yanno what...it's a good soundtrack as a whole for what it will encompass in the future for the Afterburn Universe/story and the Gates Family background. I really can't wait to get fucking 8 done so I can write something that isn't harnessed by canon.
Plus my baby (🐶) chose this one over the regular Afterburn soundtrack to listen to during our adventure outside yesterday. She's hardcore, despite her cute n' fluffy appearance.

✨Star Atlas✨
Ch. 3: Saw Lightning (Wednesday + Tyler)
.
.
The Trifid was currently a moving "sitting duck." In the prone position miles from our launch pad, the shuttle was filled with liquid hydrogen which--if struck by a meteor--would ignite blowing us all into oblivion. There was also the possibility that something could strike close enough that the impact wave would throw the shuttle onto its side.
"Trifid, this is Houston. Do you copy?"
"This is Trifid, go for Houston," Garrett answered immediately.
"Trifid, we are redirecting you to launch pad A-1. Projected arrival time to platform is fifteen minutes."
"Copy Houston. Redirecting to launch pad A-1. Initiating turn maneuver now."

I still don't get the argument that Morticia and Gomez are "innocent" of killing Garrett, just because he was already dying. That's just... not how murder works? You could be actively dying from heart failure, given just hours or days to live, but if someone stabs you with a knife on your way home from the doctor, the cause of death is still homicide, not heart failure...?
Tumblr media
I think the much better argument for Morticia's innocence was self-defense, and in fact, I think that is the only argument that would hold up in court, if this series was actually governed by Vermont's/United States' laws in reality. The fact that Garrett accidentally poisoned himself is largely irrelevant to the fact that Morticia stabbed him with a sword...? (well, if we're being technical, it was more like she held the sword up as Garrett walked right into it and impaled himself). Regardless, Garrett didn't die from nightshade poisoning; he died from a stab wound to stomach, followed by a fall from the second story balcony...?
It just bothers me, because I would've much preferred Morticia Gomez to be declared innocent based on self-defense, rather than the technicality that Garrett poisoned himself and was already dying. Garret still chose to attack Gomez with the sword before the vial of nightshade broke in his pocket.
Tumblr media
I feel like we also don't talk about that distinction enough: Garrett Gates was still mentally aware and in control of his actions when he started violently attacking Gomez, with the intent to kill him. The vial broke in his pocket during the fight. When Morticia first sees Gomez "fighting for his life," the poisoning hasn't even happened yet. Self-defense is a valid argument, and it baffles me that Gomez, as someone who was planning to be a lawyer, and was fully ready to take the blame for Morticia, didn't argue that angle for both of their sakes', especially when they'd already made reports to the police about Garrett's stalking behavior...?
So, when Gomez was "cleared of any wrongdoing" back in 1990, Walker claims that that was because Ansel Gates confessed to him that his son planned to kill all of the kids at the dance, and Walker didn't want that information to become public through a trial, so he thought the best political move was to let Gomez go free... but how much time passed between Gomez being arrested and Ansel Gates confessing...? How long was Gomez in prison before Sheriff Walker found out about the poison? Dr. Anwar would've known about it, because of the toxicology report, but I repeat: a stab wound is what killed him, not the poison. So, did Walker go out drinking that very night, knowing the truth about the autopsy, and then ran into Ansel, who immediately confessed...? I'm so confused!! Especially because the police file on Garrett's death was still ultimately labeled "homicide," and Sheriff Galpin was clearly never brought into the loop as to why Gomez was released.
Ugh! For a show that has a huge budget and can afford the best writers in the 'biz, there are so many logical fallacies in this episode alone.

Like I said, yes, "30 years" may well have been a ballpark figure, which as you say is common usage, but we don't know for sure.
It's possible that the normie who died and was the reason for the Nighthades losing their charter was Garrett Gates - after all, it does seem unlikely for Nightshade members to be involved in the death of two normies within a few years. But it was never actually confirmed. There was no "the Nightshades lost their charter because of us" hint from Gomez or Morticia. Morticia expected Wednesday to be a member when she joined her in their chambers. So either the group did lose their charter after Garrett's death, but was allowed to continue on unofficially right from the word go, or she didn't know that they were officially disbanded, and therefore it happened after she, Gomez, and Weems graduated. Weems would know about it either way, as the current Principal. (Yoko had added to Xavier's statement, "But we have a lot of wealthy alumni, so Weems looks the other way as long as nobody makes any waves.")
It doesn't help that the entry from Rowan's mother was supposed to have been from 25 years ago, but the last sentence on the page was, "Mason wondered if the Nightshades should be effecting a greater influence on the [Bradbury] tower’s utility," as if the group (still) had any official capacity/influence at the school...
ISTG they did not really think this through, or they made late changes to the whole backstory but didn't update all the related tidbits.
I wonder how many hydes are there in the world and how they're treated. Seeing how tyler was treated im guessing it'ssss not good :/ I wonder if there'll be other hydes in willowhill or if they are just extremely rare. I want tyler to meet another hyde maybe an older hyde so they could help him control his hyde and be his sort of mentor. Tho after seeing how hydes are banned in nevermore i doubt any of them will come out willingly due to how society views hydes and fear them
Im also wondering if hydes are the only outcasts who are destructive by nature- if so then thats a pretty sad fate. And i just cant wait to know the origins of hydes and how they came to be like i think its a very interesting plot point to delve into

I don’t understand why people don’t think that Wyler couldn’t be endgame. They had a meet cute in coffee shop, whereupon Wednesday fixes Tyler’s ‘temperamental beast’ because she could read the directions. With that, you cannot convince me that the writers do not already have the theoretical marriage license drawn up, merely awaiting their signatures (in blood of course).
