This collective of writers was carefully selected from an extensive submission and outreach process to honor the mission of JCTC, and to realize the goals of The GSNPF: Community, Festivity, Advocacy, Sustainability, and Artistic Equity.
As artistic institutions in a rapidly changing world, it is incumbent upon us to constantly question whether our work is truly being created, developed, and produced in service of our community, and assess whether or not our work is reaching audiences in a meaningful, impactful manner.
The GSNPF was conceived around a new strategy of blending community and artistic development in which community members are given access to create art not just consume art, resulting in an understanding and celebration of the opportunity for individual and collective growth inherent in the process of new play development.
The Collective of Playwrights participating in the GSNPF include both emerging and early career playwrights, Jersey City Community Members working in the non-profit and advocacy sector, International Artists both from abroad and from our local immigrant communities, college students, and high school students. Each of their plays focuses around an aspect of social justice.
The Garden State New Play Festival will take place on May 1st-4th and 8th-11th, 2025 at Jersey City Theatre Center.
Over the course of the six months leading up to the Festival, each writer will embark on an individualized dramaturgical track to further develop their play for presentation at the Festival. Woven into each track will be an interactive forum with a local community group or organization selected according to the lens of social justice through which the play has been conceived.
Concurrently to the individualized play development tracks, a schedule of workshops, exchanges, classroom visits, play readings, and public events, will take place between November and May, and be open to all Festival participants, including writers, actors, dramaturgs, directors, and community leaders.
The goal is that by the time the Festival itself opens, hundreds of artists and community members will have collaborated and contributed to this process of new play development, and personally experienced the power of the written word for the stage.
The GSNPF offers a new model for a new play festival that brings together artists of all career levels without barriers of hierarchy, and blurs the lines between artist and audience, all while respecting the integrity of each individual artist's craft and experience. This model frames the art of playmaking as a means of expression and advocacy, and as a tool for deeper understanding of self and one's community, and dismantles barriers to producing full productions of new plays by cultivating a vibrant ecosystem that values and champions the power of playmaking.
The Garden State New Play Festival is supported by a grant from the NJ State Council on the Arts, Project Serving Artists grant.

Sweet Innocence

Summary: Princess Y/N’s kingdom is falling apart, and her family’s only hope is her marriage to a cruel, old king. Desperate, she makes a reckless choice one night—and wakes up in Niji Vinsmoke’s bed. Now, caught between a dangerous engagement and Niji’s growing interest, Y/N must navigate a deadly game of survival where one wrong move could cost her everything.
Note: A new story? Yes, sorry. But I had the idea while playing Bounty Rush and had to write it. Bare with me. ;-; Already wrote 3 chapters of this one, but it will get slow updates. Also trying to make the read-flow better with some bold Highlights. Long chapters! I used Google as help for fancy names, hit me up if you know where they're from.
Third-person pov. Female Reader. Sensitive topics. Hard language. Slight Gore. Slow Updates. Enemies to lovers. Sex mentioned. Forced marriage. Death mentioned.

The Kingdom of Velderis had always been a jewel among the southern realms—a land of rich history, golden coastlines, and a proud naval fleet that commanded both respect and fear across the seas. Nestled between towering, mist-kissed cliffs and sprawling fields of wildflowers, the kingdom’s capital, Eldoria, stood as a monument to centuries of wealth and power. At sunrise, the city’s marble domes and copper spires gleamed like fire against the sky, and the scent of salt and citrus drifted through its cobbled streets.
For generations, Velderis had thrived under the rule of King Eldric and Queen Selene, their governance blessed with prosperity and an unshakable alliance with the great naval forces of the region. The people of Velderis lived well; merchants boasted of the finest silks and spices from distant lands, and the harbors were always bustling with trade ships. Knights patrolled the city with pride, and even the poorest citizens rarely went hungry. It was a kingdom built on strength and diplomacy, and for years, it had seemed untouchable.
But gold does not last forever.
Princess Y/N had spent most of her childhood blissfully unaware of the slow decay creeping through her family’s empire. She had lived as any princess should—dancing barefoot through the palace gardens, racing horses along the sea cliffs, and sneaking away from her lessons whenever the opportunity arose. The world had felt endless in those days, filled with color and warmth, and she had never once thought to question the security of her home.
She and her sister, Hitomi, had been raised in privilege but not in cruelty. Their parents were not the kind to lock them away in gilded cages or deny them the joys of youth. Queen Selene, ever graceful and wise, had taught them kindness before etiquette, while King Eldric, though impulsive at times, was a man who adored his daughters fiercely. His booming laughter could shake the very halls of the palace, and when he wasn’t tangled in matters of state, he was lifting them onto his shoulders or telling them stories of battles fought and won.
Yet even the strongest of men cannot stop the tide of time.
Y/N had first begun to notice the shift in the kingdom’s fortune when the feasts grew smaller. At first, it was subtle—certain dishes missing from the banquet tables, a quiet decrease in the servants attending them. The once-lavish festivals of Eldoria became less extravagant, and the royal family made fewer appearances outside the castle walls.
Then came the rumors.
She would hear them whispered among the maids as they folded linens, spoken in hushed tones by the palace guards when they thought no one was listening. The kingdom was in debt. The once-mighty fleet of Velderis had weakened, unable to keep up with the growing military power of rival nations. Trade agreements were failing. Coin was slipping through the cracks faster than it could be replenished.
By the time Y/N was sixteen, she could no longer ignore it. She had seen her mother’s quiet worry, the way her father’s temper had grown shorter. She had watched Hitomi’s perfect composure falter when their parents sat them down and explained the truth—Velderis was on the verge of collapse. Their noble status meant nothing without wealth, and if they did not act soon, their family’s legacy would crumble into dust.
And so, a decision was made.
Hitomi, the elder daughter, the beauty of the family, was to be wed to a prince of GERMA—a powerful and militaristic empire whose name alone struck both admiration and fear across the seas. It was an advantageous match, a way to secure an alliance that could restore Velderis’ strength. The engagement was arranged swiftly, and while Hitomi had not protested, Y/N had seen the sharp glint of resentment in her sister’s usually calm eyes.
But Y/N’s fate was far worse.
Her marriage was not to be a political alliance of status, nor a romantic tale of duty and love. No, her betrothal had been arranged to a widowed king, a man of great wealth and military strength but of no charm, no youth, and no kindness. He was known across the region for his cold nature and calculating mind, a man who had already buried two wives and sought a new, young bride to bear him heirs.
The worst part? It was not her beauty that had sealed the deal.
No one compared her to Hitomi, whose face was a thing of delicate, sculpted perfection. Y/N was neither as poised nor as graceful; her hands were calloused from climbing trees and handling horses, her laughter too loud for the refinement expected of a princess.
But that was exactly why she had been chosen. Because she was innocent.
Because her father, desperate to secure Velderis' survival, had gambled with her very life.
And he had lost.
One week after her twenty-first birthday, Y/N arrived at GERMA, a floating fortress that defied the very laws of nature.
It was not a kingdom in the traditional sense—no lush valleys, no grand palaces carved into the hillsides, no gentle rivers winding through quaint villages. GERMA was a nation built atop warships, a fleet so massive it could swallow entire naval forces whole. It moved across the sea like a living thing, an ever-shifting empire of steel and thunder, where politics were decided by power, and alliances were sealed in blood.
The royal vessel from Velderis docked at one of GERMA’s sprawling platforms, an expanse of blackened metal and towering, gold-plated buildings that shimmered beneath the midday sun. It was eerily quiet, save for the low hum of machinery and the rhythmic crash of waves against the hull. There were no bustling markets, no street performers filling the air with song—only the constant movement of soldiers in crisp uniforms, their faces unreadable beneath their helmets.
For the first time in a long time, Y/N felt small.
She had traveled before, seen neighboring kingdoms with their own unique beauty, but GERMA was something else entirely. It was a war machine, a kingdom of conquest, and its people lived under a different set of rules—ones dictated by strength, not diplomacy.
It was also where her sister’s fate would be sealed.
The entire reason for their visit was to finalize Hitomi’s engagement. Their father, ever the tactician, had insisted on traveling with them to ensure that the arrangements were to his liking. Their mother had gone to serve as a mediator, while Hitomi… well, Hitomi had no choice but to follow.
Y/N had been invited to the political gathering as well—her presence was expected, after all—but she had refused.
Not openly, of course. She hadn’t thrown a fit or dramatically stormed away. She had simply declined in the same quiet way she always did when something made her uncomfortable. "I’ll just get in the way," she had said, offering a small smile, though no one believed that was the reason.
Her father had sighed but hadn't pushed. Her mother had given her a knowing look but had said nothing. And Hitomi—perfect, elegant Hitomi—had simply nodded as if she understood.
So while her family disappeared into the depths of GERMA’s grand warship, where political discussions and marital negotiations were being handled behind closed doors, Y/N stayed behind.
And she fed the seagulls.
She sat on the edge of the docking platform, legs swinging over the side as she absentmindedly tossed bits of stale bread to the hungry birds. The seagulls were fearless here, darting dangerously close, their sharp beaks snapping at the crumbs before they could hit the water.
The sea was calmer than she had expected—an endless stretch of deep blue, reflecting the golden light of the late afternoon. From this vantage point, she could see the rest of GERMA's fleet scattered across the horizon, each massive warship interconnected by thick metal. It was a floating empire unlike any other, but Y/N found no beauty in it. It was cold, unyielding, built for battle rather than for life.
She sighed, tearing off another piece of bread and flicking it toward the birds.
She was delaying the inevitable.
Once Hitomi’s engagement was settled, her family would return to Velderis, and she would not be going with them. Instead, she would be sent to another kingdom, one far less impressive than GERMA but no less powerful. A kingdom where her future husband was waiting.
She still hadn't said his name out loud.
A chill ran through her despite the warmth of the sun. The very thought of him, a man she had never met, made her stomach twist. She knew only the whispers—the rumors of his ruthlessness, the cold efficiency with which he had ruled. He was rich beyond reason, his army unmatched, his kingdom fortified and untouchable. But that wealth and power had come at a cost, and it was said that the women he married did not live long enough to enjoy it.
Her fingers tightened around the last piece of bread.
She could still run.
It was a foolish thought, a childish fantasy, but it lingered in the back of her mind all the same. She had never been a coward, but this was different. This was her life being sold away like some political bargaining chip, her freedom exchanged for a kingdom’s survival.
But if she ran, Velderis would fall.
Her father had been clear—without her marriage, their kingdom would collapse under the weight of its debt. Their enemies would seize the opportunity to strike, their allies would turn their backs, and soon, Velderis would be nothing more than a fading memory in history books.
And so, she would marry him.
Not because she wanted to.
But because she had no choice.
She exhaled slowly, finally throwing the last piece of bread into the sea. The seagulls fought over it, screeching and snapping, and she watched them without really seeing them. Her fate was sealed. There was no escape.
But still…
A voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Hmmmm..?”
Y/N blinked, turning her head sharply. She hadn’t heard anyone approach, but now, standing just a few feet away, was a man she instantly recognized—Niji Vinsmoke.
His posture was almost lazily arrogant, hands in his pockets, head tilted slightly as he studied her with an expression caught somewhere between boredom and mild curiosity.
Y/N swallowed, suddenly aware of how alone they were. She wasn’t sure if he had been sent to fetch her, or if he had stumbled upon her by accident, but she had a sinking feeling that it didn’t matter.
Because unlike her, Niji Vinsmoke was not trapped.
He was free.
And for the first time in a long time, Y/N felt something dangerously close to jealousy.
For a long moment, Y/N said nothing.
She simply stared at Niji, taking in the sharp, effortless confidence in the way he stood, the glint of amusement hidden just beneath the surface of his smirk.
He looked every bit the prince of GERMA—tailored suit, pristine and likely worth more than most people’s yearly income, the dark fabric perfectly fitted to his broad frame. A high-collared cape draped over one shoulder, fastened with gold accents that caught the light. His signature sunglasses rested on the bridge of his nose, hiding his eyes completely. Even so, she could feel him watching her, assessing her with the same cool detachment one might have for a mildly interesting insect.
And yet, despite all of that, despite the unmistakable weight of his presence—she didn’t feel the need to bow.
Instead, she let out a slow breath and looked back at the sea. “You’re not very polite.”
The corners of his mouth twitched, a near-smirk that didn’t quite form. “And you’re not very subtle,” he replied. “But I think we’ve already established that.”
Y/N ignored him, focusing instead on the distant waves, her fingers brushing absentmindedly against the cool metal of the platform beneath her. It was easier than looking at him, easier than acknowledging the fact that she was speaking so freely to someone she probably shouldn’t.
GERMA was dangerous.
Everyone knew that.
Its princes were dangerous—weapons first, men second. Raised for war, hardened by battle, with no need for sentiment or mercy. She had heard the stories, knew what kind of people the Vinsmokes were. And yet, here she was, trading words with one of them like it was the most natural thing in the world.
She should have been afraid.
But instead, she found herself irritated.
He was still standing there, still watching her with that air of detached amusement, as if waiting for her to crack first.
So she turned back to him, arms crossing over her chest. “Shouldn’t you be at the meeting?” she asked, lifting an eyebrow. “Or do Germa princes get to skip out on their royal duties?”
Niji huffed out something that might have been a laugh. “The trial ended ten minutes ago,” he said, slipping one hand into his pocket. “But I’ll be sure to let my father know you’re so concerned about our political affairs.”
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “You don’t need to.”
“Oh?” He tilted his head slightly, as if studying her through the tinted glass of his sunglasses. “And what exactly are you doing out here, then? Feeding the seagulls? Hiding from something?”
Her fingers twitched, but she didn’t react. She wouldn’t give him that satisfaction.
Instead, she reached for the last remaining crumbs of bread, tossing it toward the water with deliberate ease. “Not everyone enjoys sitting through hours of royal negotiations,” she said. “Some of us prefer fresh air.”
His smirk widened just a fraction.
“You talk much for a servant.”
She froze for half a second.
Then, slowly, she turned to face him fully. “Excuse me?”
He shrugged, as if the matter was of no real importance. “You’re dressed plain,” he said, gesturing lazily at her attire. “And you’re out here alone, wasting time with birds while everyone else is inside doing something actually productive. Not exactly a princess-like image, is it?”
She clenched her jaw.
Of course. Of course he would make such an assumption.
Unlike Hitomi, she had never cared much for the delicate, embroidered gowns or elaborate hairstyles their station demanded. She preferred practicality—a simple yet elegant tunic, high boots built for movement, and a cloak that shielded her from the ocean breeze. And now, apparently, that was enough for him to assume she was beneath him.
Her pride flared like a spark catching fire.
“I am Princess Y/N of Velderis,” she said coolly, her chin lifting just slightly. “The second daughter of King Eldric and Queen Selene.”
She expected shock, or maybe a hint of embarrassment.
Instead, Niji merely raised an eyebrow, adjusting his sunglasses. “Huh,” he said, as if it was the most unimpressive thing he had ever heard.
She grit her teeth.
“And,” she continued, voice clipped, “what I wear is none of your business.”
That, at least, earned her a short chuckle.
“Well,” Niji said, taking a slow step forward, just enough to lean in slightly, his voice dropping into something mockingly conspiratorial. “If you don’t want people mistaking you for a servant, maybe don’t dress like one.”
She stiffened.
A low, simmering frustration burned in her chest, but she bit her tongue, forcing herself to stay composed. He wanted a reaction—expected one, even. But she wouldn’t give him that satisfaction.
Instead, she turned on her heel, stepping away from the platform’s edge.
“I should go,” she muttered under her breath.
“Good idea,” Niji said smoothly, watching her with that same infuriating smirk. “Wouldn’t want your future husband to think you’ve gone missing.”
That made her pause.
Just for a fraction of a second.
He didn’t know who she was engaged to. He was only poking, testing—but the fact that he even mentioned it at all sent a wave of cold realization through her.
She wasn’t free.
Not like him. Not like any of the people walking around this kingdom built on steel and war.
Her fingers curled into fists, but she didn’t turn back. She simply kept walking, her steps quick and purposeful as she made her way back toward the ship where her family was waiting.
Behind her, Niji let out a soft laugh—one that carried just enough amusement to let her know he had won this round.
Y/N didn’t stop walking until she reached the ship.
Her heart was still beating faster than she’d like, her frustration from her exchange with Niji lingering like an unwelcome guest in her chest. She had half a mind to throw something overboard—maybe one of those expensive, gold-plated goblets the GERMA royal family probably drank out of, just to watch it sink into the abyss.
But that wouldn’t change anything.
Her fate was sealed, and no amount of frustration could undo the chains her family had wrapped around her wrists.
She stepped onto the deck of their royal ship, brushing past a few familiar guards who offered quick bows as she made her way to the cabins. She needed to see Hitomi. Needed to know how things had gone, what decisions had been made behind closed doors, how much longer she would have her sister by her side before they were both married off to men they barely knew.
She found Hitomi in her cabin, seated by the large, ornately carved vanity table near the window. The room was filled with the soft golden glow of the evening sun, casting a warm light over the space, but Y/N felt no comfort in it.
Hitomi glanced up as she entered. “Oh, you’re back,” she noted, voice light.
Y/N wasted no time. “Well?” she demanded, shutting the door behind her. “What happened? What was decided?”
Hitomi let out a small hum, tilting her head slightly as she picked up a silver hairbrush, running it through the long, sleek strands of her dark hair. She looked... calm. Even pleased.
Y/N narrowed her eyes.
“Well,” Hitomi said at last, “the wedding is scheduled for two weeks from now.”
Y/N’s stomach dropped slightly. Two weeks. That was fast.
Too fast.
“But,” Hitomi continued, “it seems they haven’t decided who I should marry yet.”
Y/N frowned, stepping further into the room. “What do you mean?”
Hitomi set her brush down, turning in her chair to face her fully. “Father and Mr. Vinsmoke couldn’t come to an agreement,” she said, a faint, knowing smile curving her lips. “Father wants me to marry Ichiji, but Mr. Vinsmoke isn’t ready to give up his eldest son so easily. They’re still… negotiating.”
Y/N stared at her. “And you’re fine with that?”
Hitomi shrugged one delicate shoulder. “I suppose,” she said airily. “I’ll be married to one of them regardless.”
Y/N clenched her jaw. “And you’re okay with that?”
That earned her a small, amused glance. “They’re more attractive than I expected,” Hitomi admitted, leaning back against her seat. “I don’t suppose it really matters which one I end up with, as long as he’s not a bore.”
Y/N’s hands curled into fists. How? How could she be so calm about this? How could she act as though she were picking out a new gown instead of a husband?
“This is a marriage, Hitomi,” she said sharply. “Not some game.”
Hitomi’s faint smile faltered for the first time.
For a brief second, something flickered in her dark eyes—something that looked almost like sadness. But it was gone as quickly as it came, replaced once more with that same calm, unreadable expression.
“It is a game, Y/N,” she said softly. “We just don’t get to make the rules.”
Y/N swallowed hard.
She hated that answer.
She hated that it was true.
Hitomi sighed, shifting slightly in her seat, her gaze drifting toward the open window. The sea stretched endlessly before them, shimmering in the fading sunlight. “But we’re not here to talk about me, are we?” she mused. “I suppose you’d rather talk about your upcoming wedding, hm?”
Y/N went rigid.
Hitomi tilted her head slightly, her voice turning almost too casual. “To King Zeang of Malvera.”
Y/N’s stomach twisted at the sound of his name.
Zeang.
Y/N turned away, gripping the back of a nearby chair. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
But Hitomi only studied her, expression thoughtful. “You should,” she said. “You should talk about it.”
Y/N squeezed her eyes shut. “There’s nothing to talk about,” she muttered. “The decision has been made.”
Hitomi’s voice turned quiet. “You don’t have to go through with it.”
Y/N let out a bitter laugh, turning back to her. “And what do you suggest?” she asked, voice dripping with sarcasm. “That I run away and doom our kingdom to collapse?”
Hitomi’s gaze was steady. “No,” she said. “I’m suggesting that maybe, just maybe, we could find someone else to marry instead.”
Y/N frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Hitomi exhaled slowly, rising to her feet. She walked over to the window, fingers resting lightly against the frame as she stared out at the vast expanse of the ocean.
“You know,” she said after a moment, “Zeang never kept his previous wives for long.”
Y/N stiffened. “I’m aware.”
Hitomi’s fingers curled slightly. “And do you know what they all had in common?”
Silence.
Y/N’s heart thumped loudly in her chest.
Hitomi turned to her, eyes dark and serious. “They were all innocent.”
A heavy, suffocating silence filled the space between them.
Y/N’s breath caught.
Hitomi watched her closely, as if waiting for something to click.
And then, softly—almost gently—she repeated it.
“If you weren’t innocent, he wouldn’t marry you either.”
Y/N’s hands went cold.
She stared at her sister, trying to understand exactly what she was implying, exactly what she was suggesting. But her mind was moving too fast, emotions crashing into each other like waves in a storm.
“That’s—” she began, but she didn’t even know what she was trying to say.
Hitomi sighed, stepping closer, placing a delicate hand on her shoulder. “Think about it,” she said, voice softer now. “Our kingdom needs this marriage, yes. But if you were… disqualified, they’d simply have to find someone else, wouldn’t they?”
Y/N swallowed hard.
Her mind reeled.
She had spent so long believing that she had no choice, that she was trapped in a fate she couldn’t escape. But now, for the first time, there was something else.
Something dangerous.
Something…possible.
Hitomi gave her shoulder a light squeeze before stepping back. “Just something to consider,” she murmured.
And with that, she returned to her seat, picking up her brush once more as if the conversation had never happened.
But Y/N?
Y/N stood frozen, her world suddenly spinning in an entirely new direction.
The party was louder than expected.
Y/N had thought it would be a simple gathering, something dignified and restrained, given that it was meant to honor the unity of two powerful nations. But of course, this was GERMA 66—a kingdom that was anything but dignified.
It was a riot of noise and movement, filled with the clatter of gold-rimmed goblets, the occasional sound of shattering glass, and the boisterous laughter of men who lived without fear. The scent of roasting meat, sweat, and expensive liquor thickened the air, and all around her, nobles and warriors alike indulged with reckless abandon.
Her father was at the center of it all, already deep into his cups, his booming laughter rising above the din as he slapped Judge on the back like they were old friends instead of two kings negotiating their children’s futures.
Y/N barely acknowledged any of it.
Her hands were tight fists at her sides, her breath short and uneven as she stood near one of the long banquet tables, staring blankly at the bottles of alcohol lined up before her.
She had spent the entire evening thinking.
Thinking about Hitomi’s words.
"If you weren’t innocent, he wouldn’t marry you either."
The sentence had lodged itself deep in her mind, replaying over and over like a cruel taunt.
It was simple. Blatantly simple.
A way out.
She had never been particularly sentimental about her purity. It wasn’t something she clung to with any great sense of importance. But now—now it had become a bargaining chip.
A key to her own freedom.
Her throat felt tight, her palms slightly damp as she finally reached forward, her fingers brushing over the bottles. Her gaze scanned the labels, searching for the one with the highest proof.
She wasn’t foolish.
She knew herself well enough to understand that she wouldn’t have the courage to go through with it if she were sober.
So she wouldn’t be.
The bottle she selected was strong—stronger than anything she had ever dared to drink before.
She poured herself a glass. Downed it in one go.
It burned.
A hot, fiery path down her throat, sharp enough to bring tears to her eyes.
She coughed, her body immediately rejecting the intensity, but she forced herself to keep going.
Another glass.
Then another.
The world around her began to blur at the edges, the sounds of laughter and clinking goblets dulling into an indistinct hum.
She could feel it now—the warmth spreading through her limbs, the soft fuzziness settling into her brain, numbing everything it touched.
Good.
This was what she needed.
She stumbled away from the table, barely aware of her surroundings anymore. Her vision was unfocused, her thoughts hazy, but she had one goal in mind.
A man.
Any man.
Someone to make sure she could never be married off to Zeang.
Her steps were unsteady as she wove through the crowd, her body light, her mind floating somewhere between awareness and unconsciousness.
Then—she bumped into someone.
A firm, solid figure.
Strong.
Warm.
The scent of something clean and expensive filled her senses—subtle cologne mixed with the lingering sharpness of the sea and sweat.
She barely looked up.
Didn’t care who it was.
Instead, she stood on her tiptoes, swaying slightly, and pressed her lips against his.
The touch was brief, barely more than a soft press of warmth, before darkness swallowed her whole.
...
Y/N awoke to noise.
Loud. Jarring.
The clash of metal against metal, the distant sounds of shouted orders, the rhythmic pounding of boots against the floorboards.
For a brief moment, she didn’t register anything at all.
Her mind was still wrapped in a thick, alcohol-induced haze, her body heavy and warm, nestled against something soft and unfamiliar.
She blinked groggily, her lashes fluttering as she stretched—
Only to feel cool air against her bare skin.
Her bare skin.
A strange, creeping feeling crawled up her spine.
Slowly, she sat up, the sheets sliding down her body. The moment she saw herself, the moment she saw the way her naked form was tangled in silk covers, her heart stopped cold.
She felt her breath hitch, her fingers clutching the sheets tightly, dragging them up to her chest as panic rose like bile in her throat.
This…
This wasn’t her bed.
Her pulse pounded in her ears as she darted her gaze around the room.
The space was larger than hers, the walls lined with neatly arranged weapons, the faint scent of steel and cologne lingering in the air.
This wasn’t her cabin.
This wasn’t even her ship.
Her mind raced, piecing together what had happened.
The party.
The drinking.
The kiss.
Then—blackness.
Her stomach twisted violently.
Who?
How?
Her thoughts were still sluggish, her memory a hazy void, but before she could dwell on it any further, the door creaked open.
Footsteps.
She snapped her head up, her grip on the sheets tightening like a vice.
And then—
Her entire body went still.
Niji Vinsmoke stood in the doorway.
Still in his training gear, a towel draped lazily over his shoulders. His blue hair was slightly damp, strands falling across his forehead in a way that should have looked casual, but instead sent a sharp, sinking dread straight into her gut.
He took one look at her.
And grinned.
A slow, amused smirk that curled at the edges, sharp and mocking, as his gaze flickered down to where she sat clutching the sheets to her chest.
Y/N felt her face drain of all color.
Oh.
Oh no.
Niji clicked his tongue, crossing his arms as he leaned against the doorframe.
“Well,” he drawled, his voice thick with amusement. “You sure know how to pick ‘em, Princess.”

Being a moon goddess isn’t easy. You have to deal with many gods, deities, mortals and the lunarians, aka the inhabitants of the moon. Usually the council helps with major decisions and choices. Yet it once again fell into your own hands as the Greek pantheon was a ruckus and the moon god from the Egyptian pantheon was busy challenging Ra. Luckily the Moon god from the Japanese pantheon, Tsukuyomi was there to help you at the moment.
Even though you did a lot for the moon, many were terrified of you, that was because of your strong opinions. Many thought you were too harsh and too confident. Others thought you had too much charisma and power. Yet all of those traits is what also made you popular among various marriage candidates. They all asked your hand or tries to make a move, but for you it was no use. After all, you had seen the ancient worlds with your own two eyes. Men ruled the word, not all ofcourse. Yet the kind ones were seen unmanly while the barbarians were seen as the real men. They held unrealistic expectations for women and often saw them as lessers. Hence why you have refused all the proposes and offers.
Making Tsukuyomi aware of your exhausted state, you decided to go for a walk on the moon. You blended well with it’s pale yet bright look. Despite the fact many thought of your personality as ‘manly’ it was no secret that you looked like a noble woman out the renaissance. The chains and jewelry on your body making soft ringing sounds as you stride over the moon surface, deep in thought about your work. There was so much to worry and care about…until the sudden sounds of an instrument filled your ears. It was soft and distant, judging from the little sound you had you assumed it to be the sitar of Saraswati. The Hindu goddess often played it when there was a festival or just for her husband Brahma. Seeing her always brought you comfort as most Hindu goddess had always been very motherly or sisterly to you. So why not take a quick trip down to the heavens?
Landing on Valhalla you took a deep breath of oxygen, even if you didn’t need it as you’re an immortal being. It was still a pleasant experience to finally breathe air on earth. Following the sound of the sitar, you were eventually let to the Valhalla garden. The sitar increased in sound, yet there were no lotus’ in sight. No matter where Saraswati went, there were always lotuses and waters….was this on the sound of Saraswati’s sitar? Now that you thought about it, it wasn’t the same melody she usually played…who in the name of the moon could be here playing the sitar? Stepping inside the green house you walked past many flowers in the colors red, pink and purple. The green complimenting them elegantly and the plants were kept neat. The sight and of the woman playing became more clear.
Being now almost a meter or two away from her you were facing her back. She had purple hair, and the sitar was resting in her lap. You spoke to her in a stern voice. ‘What are you doing here?’ You asked the woman, walking a little closer, making her turn her head. ‘Well hello there~ i’m Bemzaiten, goddess of fortune, music and arts.’ Benzaiten? That wasn’t a name you had heard among the other gods. Ever. Was she perhaps new? But even if she was. Why is she holding the Sitar, a hindu instrument? ‘The sitar is a hindu instrument…are you from the same pantheon?’ You asked Benzaiten with narrowed eyes, she instead smiled and giggles at you. ‘I suppose you could say i’m Involved in the east asian pantheons.’ Benzaiten told you, her lips twisted into a smirk as she looked you up and down, taking in the many features you had that resembles the moon itself. She herself wasn’t that bad looking. She had a slender body, deep purple hair, yet looking at her form she had a more masculine look.
‘You’re eyeing me, lady moon. Are you perhaps interested?’ Benzaiten said in a voice laced with interest and mocking intention. This made you raise an eyebrow. You were used to many men being like this, yet never met a woman so…bold and daring before. At least not in this flirty way. ‘Is that a challenge?’ You asked her back, amused by her behavior. Benzaiten gave you a challenging smile back, her eyes holding mixed with confidence. ‘Perhaps.’ She said in a sly tone laced with arrogance. Her eyes half lidded and seductive. You narrowed your eyes once again at the daring words. But before you could say anything you gelt a hand on your shoulder, Turing around you could see Tsukuyomi who held a face full of worry and conflict. ‘My lady…Poseidon is trying to conquer the moon because his daughter said she wants it…’ typical. When is the greek pantheon not causing trouble. You said your goodbyes to Bentaizen and left for the moon once again to stop Poseidon from conquering the Moon. Once again. Cause it aint the first time he pulled stuff like this.
Benzaiten herself just snickered in amusement. Hoping you will visit her every time she plays the Sitar.
Thank you for reading! 🩵🤍

Pick a Card: Messages for More Peace and Well-being. [Goddess Salus]

Top Left to Right -> Pile 1, Pile 2.
Bottom Left to Right -> Pile 3, Pile 4.
[Feel free to pick more than one pile]. [Bonus: Practical Action Steps]
================================================================================================
Introduction
Goddess Salus, an important deity in Roman mythology, is the personification of health, well-being, and prosperity. She is often equated with the Greek goddess Hygieia, who is associated with hygiene and preventive health. Salus was highly revered in ancient Rome, symbolizing both personal health and the overall well-being of the state. Her role extended beyond physical health to encompass a broader sense of safety, welfare, and public health. Temples and altars dedicated to Salus were common, and her worship included rituals aimed at ensuring the health and stability of both individuals and the community at large.
Salus was frequently depicted in Roman art holding a serpent, a symbol of renewal and healing, often accompanied by a patera (a shallow dish used in religious ceremonies) or a scepter. These attributes underline her association with medicinal practices and protective qualities. The worship of Salus illustrates the ancient Romans' understanding of the interconnectedness between individual health and the state's prosperity. Festivals and offerings in her honor were part of the public and private religious practices, reflecting the high value placed on health and well-being in Roman society.
================================================================================================
Pile 1
Message: Healing through Nature Salus advises you to spend more time in nature. The healing energies of the earth, trees, and fresh air will help soothe your mind and bring clarity. Whether it's a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting in your garden, connecting with the natural world can significantly reduce stress and promote inner peace. Make it a habit to regularly immerse yourself in natural surroundings.
Actions to Take for Pile 1.
Daily Walks: Schedule at least 15-30 minutes each day for a walk in a park or natural setting.
Weekend Hikes: Plan a hiking trip once a month to explore new trails and immerse yourself in different natural environments.
Outdoor Activities: Incorporate outdoor activities like gardening, cycling, or picnicking into your routine.
Nature Sounds: Use apps or YouTube to play nature sounds (like rain, ocean waves, or forest ambiance) during meditation or relaxation time.
Sunlight Exposure: Spend at least 10-15 minutes daily in direct sunlight to boost your mood and vitamin D levels.
================================================================================================
Pile 2
Message: Healing through Self-Care Salus encourages you to prioritize self-care. This involves more than just physical health; it includes emotional and mental well-being. Establish a daily routine that includes time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading, meditating, taking a warm bath, or practicing yoga. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, and listen to your body's needs. Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury, but a necessity for maintaining peace of mind.
Actions to Take for Pile 2.
Create a Self-Care Routine: Dedicate at least 30 minutes a day to activities that relax and rejuvenate you, such as reading, journaling, or taking a bath.
Healthy Lifestyle: Focus on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep to maintain physical health, which supports mental well-being.
Mindful Breaks: Take short breaks throughout the day to practice deep breathing, stretching, or simply resting your mind.
Digital Detox: Set aside time each day to unplug from digital devices to reduce stress and increase mindfulness.
Gratitude Practice: Keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you’re thankful for each day to cultivate a positive mindset.
================================================================================================
Pile 3
Message: Healing through Connection Salus suggests that you seek healing through connection with others. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family who uplift you. Open up about your feelings and allow others to support you. Sometimes, sharing your burdens can significantly lighten them. Additionally, consider joining a community or group that shares your interests and values. Human connection and the sense of belonging can profoundly impact your mental well-being and peace of mind.
Actions to Take Pile 3.
Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular calls or meet-ups with friends and family to maintain strong, supportive relationships.
Join a Group: Find and join a local club, group, or community organization that aligns with your interests, such as a book club, fitness class, or volunteer group.
Share Your Feelings: Practice open and honest communication with trusted loved ones about your thoughts and feelings.
Social Media Detox: Limit time spent on social media and focus on real-life interactions to build deeper connections.
Acts of Kindness: Engage in small acts of kindness, such as helping a neighbor or volunteering, to foster a sense of community and fulfillment.
================================================================================================
Pile 4
Message: Healing through Mindfulness Salus recommends incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily life. Mindfulness involves being present in the moment and fully experiencing it without judgment. Practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful walking can help you stay grounded and reduce anxiety. By focusing on the present rather than worrying about the past or future, you can achieve a greater sense of peace and balance. Start with a few minutes each day and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.
Action Steps to take Pile 4.
Daily Meditation: Start with 5-10 minutes of meditation each morning, using guided meditation apps like Headspace or Calm.
Mindful Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises multiple times a day, especially during stressful moments.
Mindful Eating: Pay attention to the taste, texture, and aroma of your food. Eat slowly and savor each bite.
Body Scan: Perform a daily body scan meditation to check in with how your body feels and release any tension.
Mindful Walking: Take short walks where you focus on the sensation of your feet touching the ground, the sights, and sounds around you.

hi, so i'm new to gvf (yes, i know i'm very behind the times, my bad) so i'm wondering if you can give me any lore on the boys that are obvious need to knows in the fandom (idk like eg best gig, most unhinged moment, sluttiest moment, why jake likes to dress piratical so much, the social media post that everyone lost their minds over, you know that kinda thing) and maybe give me some fun people to follow on here so i can get some more gvf love on my dash? x
Idk if I can give you a comprehensive, complete history of all the lore and running bits, that would be quite the endeavor 😅. And I'm not the arbiter of lore here, so definitely keep talking to others and interacting with their content. But here's what I can offer:
my best suggestion is to watch any interviews you can find on youtube and read the ones in online articles, a lot of the memes and one liners come from those and their own silly video posts(all their tiktoks and ig posts, and the Q&C/masterclass youtube vids.) Melissa Hager(though the fandom has since disowned her for her dodgy political takes and cringy interview style,) has some interviews with their parents that have some interesting lore.
General band career history: Jake, Josh, & Sam are siblings who started their little garage band in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Danny is Sam's long-term best friend, who joined because he filled in when their old drummer couldn't make it, and they liked him a lot better. They blew up and they've played some Iconic venues and festivals; The Troubador, SNL(a clip of josh being awkward went viral on tiktok and a bunch of people were being super rude about it), Lalapalooza, Coachella, Red Rocks(they uploaded the entire show on YT), Madison Square Garden (we cried) (by we I mean me and Jake.), Royal Albert Hall, and the list goes on.
etiquette: I think it's important to mention the twins' mom has stated they both have ADHD, and Jake is dyslexic. So whenever there are typos, or awkward phrasings in their posts, or they're seen "spacing out" or stimming, you'll see many people making ableist/mocking jokes about it. Don't be those people. And put your age in your bio, most 18+ blogs are responsible and don't want underage people interacting with their 18+ content.
Content is a bit sparse rn, since we're between albums/tours, so a lot of people are posting other fandom stuff, butI can recommend a few mutuals: @holdingup-fallingsky @hearts-hunger @readyforthegarden @joshsindigostreak @tripthelightfandomtastic @malenaintheskywithdiamonds @andtherestishistory13 @runwayblues @oliwright @sing-against-the-sky @hailthegodsong

This is the kind of woman who "breaks free from male order to dance freely, go hunting and eat raw meat in the mountains and the woods," - Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of Pompeii Archaeological Park.
A view into the newly excavated House of Thiasus at Pompeii. The walls are decorated with a fresco depicting the initiation rites of an ancient mystery cult. (Image credit: Parco archeologico di Pompei)
Archaeologists at Pompeii have discovered an enormous, extremely rare wall painting depicting an ancient mystery cult, at the center of which is a woman being initiated under the cover of night. The find was announced by the Pompeii Archaeological Park on Wednesday (Feb. 26) as they revealed the newly excavated House of Thiasus.
The wall painting, which is nearly life-size, runs the length of three walls along a large banquet hall, while the fourth wall opens onto a garden. Against a bright red background, there are numerous figures of maenads — female followers of Dionysus, the god of wine — who are depicted as hunters, carrying swords in their hands and slaughtered goats on their shoulders. The fresco also depicts young satyrs, part-goat and part-human creatures, playing the flute and performing a sacrifice of wine.
At the center of the fresco is an old satyr with a young woman who is about to be initiated into the Dionysian mystery cult. The ancient cult, which dates back at least to the classical Greeks of the fifth century B.C., is called a "mystery" because the initiation and practices were kept secret from outsiders. But the fresco has given experts a new clue to what went on in the rites: Roman initiates may have hunted like the Greek ones before them. The murals suggest these mystery rites echoed that ancient connection between Dionysus and wild animals.
Although many aspects of the Dionysian mysteries have been lost due to secrecy, historical accounts suggest that they involved heavy use of wine and other intoxicating substances, like opium, to induce trance-like states in followers. Dionysus was also known as a re-born god and became associated with resurrection, something that may have been promised to those initiated into the mysteries.
The only other example of a large fresco depicting the Dionysian rites was discovered in 1909 in a house in the suburbs of Pompeii known as the Villa of the Mysteries. These murals also depict satyrs, maenads and a woman being initiated into the cult in preparation for marriage, but they lack any hunting imagery.

A close-up of part of the fresco showing shellfish and butchered animals (Image credit: Parco archeologico di Pompei)
Both examples of Dionysus-themed frescoes, however, reveal the "wild, untameable side of women," Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of Pompeii Archaeological Park, said in the statement. This is the kind of woman who "breaks free from male order to dance freely, go hunting and eat raw meat in the mountains and the woods," he said.
The murals of the Dionysian mysteries in both the Villa of the Mysteries and the newly discovered House of Thiasus date to the middle of the first century B.C., meaning they were over a century old when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, preserving the paintings for two millennia. They also suggest a growing religious crisis, Zuchtriegel said, as festivals celebrating Dionysus were ostensibly banned as part of a clamp down on secret rituals in Italy in 186 B.C. The two murals suggest that the ban was widely ignored — at least in the region.
"The discovery we are showing is historic," Italian Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli said in the statement. The fresco "is an exceptional historical document and, together with the fresco of the Villa of the Mysteries, is one-of-a-kind, making Pompeii an extraordinary testament to an aspect of classical Mediterranean life that is largely unknown."
The House of Thiasus, named after the word for a group of Dionysian revelers, is now on display as part of the tours of the ongoing excavations at Pompeii.

A3! Event Story Translation “NEW ERA GARDEN” [Chapter 4]
An episode dedicated to Kasumi's feelings about his role and his past as a leader.
Kasumi
“Toshi-san, there’s this interesting rumor I’ve heard from an older lady.”
It’s hard to get the intonation right… The emphasis should be here…
“Kondo-san, I’ll stand guard here! I won’t let anyone escape!”
Kaede
Papa, are you playing as a woman?
Tsubaki
Or are you playing a guy?
Sakura
Which is it~?
Kasumi
Uh… Actually…
Kasumi
…Y-Yukio-san, this… is a mistake, right…?
Yukio
It’s not.
Kasumi
Eeh!? B-but I can’t believe I’m the only double cast…
Yukio
As for you, I wanted to see you play as both Kimigiku and Todo Heisuke.
You played Lady Shizuka in “Traces of a Dream” already, and just playing the beautiful Kimigiku is boring, isn’t it?
And I also want as many people as possible for the Ikedaya incident scene.
Kasumi
No, no, no, no way! I wouldn’t care much if it’s just a female only role, but I’ve been blank for too long and yet you already want me in the Ikedaya fight…!
It’s like a neighborhood kid getting caught in a gang leader fight!
Yukio
It’ll be fine. Yuzo said he’ll teach you.
Yuzo
…Yeah. Leave it to me. I’ll put you through the Shinsengumi hazing process.
Kasumi
!!!
Kasumi
(...Yuzo looked like a complete bully that time.)
This time, papa will play as two people, two roles at once, it’ll be a lot of work.
Kaede
You should practice a lot, then. Kaede and her friends always practice a lot of dances at the nursery.
Tsubaki
Do it everyday. You have to get it right.
Sakura
You’ll be able to do it after enough practice.
Kaede
Let’s play over there so we don’t get in the way.
Tsubaki
Okie!
Sakura
Good luck, papa~.
Kasumi
T-thanks…
…Sigh.
*He flips the page*
…
(In the other play I acted as Lady Shizuka after a long while of not playing female characters, and I got a lot of compliments from a lot of people. I'm looking forward to playing Kimigiku.)
(The only problem is Todo Heisuke… Hopefully… I’ll get the hang of it after some practice.)
(Now that I think about it, I remember the first time I was on stage there were three sword fights, it was a mess…)
“...Haah, haah, my bad…”
I’d be on my knees at first, it was hard to get up.
My body ached everywhere and my body felt heavy like steel.
It was as if the gravity only changed around me and pulled me down.
“...If the leader’s gonna be like this, there’s nothing to discuss, shouldn’t we just replace this guy?”
Syu-san’s bluntness and arrogance was nothing out of the ordinary, but it struck my heart this time.
I was pathetic and remorseful, I couldn’t even get myself to face them.
It was the first time I was assigned a role where I had to fight.
No matter how much I practiced, no matter how slow I took my time, I couldn’t reenact the movements properly at all.
I looked like I was doing a Lantern festival dance instead of having the form of a swordsman.
It’s no wonder that Syu-san, who taught it, was dismayed.
“Alright well, let’s leave the fight scene at that for today before you get hurt.”
I heard Yukio-san’s gentle voice interrupt and just bowed my head, devastated by my own shortcomings.
“...”
Yuzo looked at me like he wanted to tell me something, but with the state of my mind, I couldn't take another word, I left the rehearsal room as if to escape.
“...Today’s the day I’ll get it right.”
The next morning, I was determined and went to the rehearsal room early.
“Well, aren't you early?” “Eh, Yuzo? Why are you…”
Immediately after that, he threw a wooden sword at me and Yuzo told me to prepare myself.
“Get in form.”
Subconsciously, I handled the wooden sword as Syu-san had taught me.
“Try to move the same way as I do.”
“But, Yuzo, your role…”
“I already got your movements memorized in my head. Try to keep up the pace.”
“—T-thanks.”
Repeating it over and over and adjusting the speed, eventually I got it right for the first time.
“Yes! Finally!”
I was able to keep up with the other members at the same pace.
The joy of being able to do something I couldn’t before welled up deep inside me.
“This is just the beginning. Go show Syu-san, that this role is yours alone.”
“...Yeah!”
Yuzo usually only smacktalks me, but he helps me out so casually like this when I’m going through something difficult.
He really is a reliable childhood friend.
As a way to show my gratitude for being helped like this,
I definitely made that role mine, and mine alone.
I made up my mind and got back into the flow of things.
Kasumi
(Back then, I felt like I had to do my absolute best as the leader of the Spring Troupe.)
(...I wonder if Sakuya-kun also had a tough time with fight scenes.)
Rather, the upcoming play, Sakuya-kun might come to see it…!?
(He adores me as the first Spring Troupe leader, I can’t just show Sakuya-kun an unseemly sword fight.)
Sigh…
(I got no choice, I’ll just have to suck it up and ask Yuzo for help.)
(In the story, Kimigiku supports the Shinsengumi from the shadows, meanwhile Todo Heisuke leaves the Shinsengumi later.)
(It overlaps with my desire to support MANKAI Company in the shadows in different ways despite my departure from the theater.)
…You really are amazing, Yukio-san.
(Honestly, you’re like a wizard.)

excerpt of my essay "Crosby, Stills & Nixon: The Symbiotic Relationship between Anti-Vietnam War Protest and American Popular Music in the early 1970s"
on joni mitchell’s song “Woodstock” + more
while Joni Mitchell herself was not explicitly at Woodstock, she watched the event from her hotel room in New York City. the song details the walk to Woodstock, comparing it to walking to the biblical Garden of Eden - a popular hippie symbol for reclaiming innocence and nature. innocence, in this case, pointed towards the loss of innocence that soldiers experience from going to war. loss of innocence in war was a very common theme in anti-Vietnam War thought - in the Vietnam War specifically, the thought that these men shouldn’t have to experience the brutalities of war for a conflict that wasn’t strictly necessary for the United States to fight.
while Mitchell’s version of the song is a slow and ballad-like reflection on the Woodstock festival, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young’s 1970 cover of the song provides us with a much different mood. keeping the same lyrics and song structure, CSNY’s version contains a forward moving bass-line, interjecting ‘amped-up’ guitar solos, and a heroic mood. the mood change makes the band come across as heroes in this conflict - putting on a historic event for political change, using peace and love. the song urges the listener to stand up, go to protests, and help enact this political change by embodying the same attitude. the bass-line itself keeps the song constantly moving forward and forward, like the song is constantly speeding up. this is symbolic of the conflict that was at hand - the anti-war movements that were rolling and rolling forwards at the same time that the war was quickly becoming more and more intense. the difference in moods of the two versions very accurately represents how the two artists experienced the event - Mitchell, from a safe and reflective perspective, and CSNY, from the event itself and enacting the change in real time.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash weren’t entirely separate from retrospective, reflective anti-war thought however. in another standard of the era, band members David Crosby and Stephen Stills collaborated with Paul Kantner, a member of the popular band Jefferson Airplane, to produce the song “Wooden Ships.” this song analyzes the aspect of a ‘forever war’ - a war that is perceived to the public as unending, with no clear sign of what the future will look like. this was an issue that many anti-war protesters had with the Vietnam War, because there was no clear goal besides taking out communism. many believed the war would end rather violently; the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union still on the public’s mind. this song addresses and supports those concerns, detailing a futuristic world in which the narrator tries to make his way around a nuclear wasteland, eating only berries as sustenance. this plays to the ethos of the listeners - rather than discussing current events, it shows what the world will look like if the conflict continues. in the second verse of the song, the narrator says to another survivor he has found “I can see by your coat, my friend / You're from the other side / There's just one thing I got to know / Can you tell me please, who won?” the lyrics implies that while one (or both) sides dropped nuclear weapons, it’s still unclear in the end who the ‘winner’ was, and therefore didn’t change anything. if the narrator himself is unable to tell who won the war, what was it all for?

Holy Water, Sacred Flame
The holidays of Imbolc and Brigid may have something to tell us about courage, creativity, and commitment in these difficult times. This sermon was delivered to The Unitarian Society in East Brunswick on February 2, 2025, by Rev. Lyn Cox.
The Celtic Pagan calendar is rooted in the seasons of light and dark of the northern hemisphere and the agricultural cycles of western Europe. There are other calendars and festivals for earth-centered cultures all over the world, but this is the one we’re talking about today. At approximately the same time of year in Ireland and the United Kingdom and the northeastern United States, the middle of winter means that we can start to perceive the time of sunrise and sunset reaching toward spring, just a little more daylight each day. Yet, even as the daylight increases, February can be one of the coldest months of the year. It’s a both/and situation. Winter is still here, yet we know that change is coming.
February into March is the time of year when lambs start to be born, vulnerable and full of promise for the coming spring. They need to be kept warm. There’s some suggestion that one word for this early February holiday, Imbolc, comes from a word that means sheep’s milk. I have never kept sheep myself, but my impression is that lambs have more agility than common sense, and so Imbolc is a time when we tend patiently and carefully, even when we know we will be frustrated.
There is a holiday coming up later this month on the Jewish calendar, Tu B’Shevat, the New Year of Trees. It’s not the same holiday, each culture brings its own meaning to its own holidays, yet there are some similar themes when we’re observing Tu B’Shevat in a northern climate. We appreciate the trees as they are, and we commit to their health and growth. It’s a traditional time to plant something, if you can.
Early February, when we can imagine the next season’s arrival, is a time of initiation and starting new projects. Gardeners in climates like ours have their heads full of ideas, gathering seeds, starting a few indoors, and figuring out how to make the most of the soil and sun that will be available later. It’s hard to know how things will turn out. Making plans at this in-between time of year takes courage.
The Irish goddess Brigit and her later incarnation, St. Brigid of Kildare, are associated with this early February holiday. In the legends, Brigit protects access to clean, healing water. Her sacred well continues to be a place of healing and inspiration. In the book, Circle Round, Raising Children in Goddess Traditions, the authors suggest honoring Brigit with a “waters of the world” ritual, similar to our Water Ceremony in September. Brigit is also a figure of light and flame. When you put fire and water together, you can make entirely new things out of what you had before. You can forge iron, cook food, sculpt clay and fire it into ceramics. Maybe this transformative potential is why Bridget is also associated with childbirth, poetry, healing, song, and art.
There is one thing that newborn lambs, vegetable seeds, soup ingredients, raw iron, and future poetry all have in common: They don’t look at the beginning the way they are going to look at the end. You have to have some hope and imagination to believe in the transformation that is coming. You have to keep doing what you are doing, when the evidence for success has not yet appeared. We need to hold on through the long term, through step-by-step processes, through the discomfort of growth and change. And so another thing we learn at Brigit’s holiday is the need for commitment.
Has anyone here ever had to practice something? Have you gone to sports or dance practice, or been in a play? Has anyone here ever had to work on a project that took more than a day to complete? Big things take a lot of time to get ready for, and it can be discouraging to work on something before you can know for sure how it will turn out. Imbolc is the holiday where we decide to stick to those projects anyway. Commitment.
If we’re paying attention to a legendary figure of generosity, art, and transformation, it’s a good idea to listen to the voices of poets who figured out how to sustain themselves and their families and communities through difficult times. During Black History Month, we are reminded of many examples of poets and artists who showed and inspired perseverance as they provided hope and imagination about a better world that was not yet visible.
Lucille Clifton wrote in 1993 in her poem, “won’t you celebrate with me”:
won't you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my other hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.
Going back further in time to the 1800s, our UU ancestor Frances Ellen Watkins Harper wrote at the end of her poem “Songs for the People”:
Our world, so worn and weary,
Needs music, pure and strong,
To hush the jangle and discords
Of sorrow, pain, and wrong.
Music to soothe all its sorrow,
Till war and crime shall cease;
And the hearts of men grown tender
Girdle the world with peace.
Both poems articulate a place in the middle, in between what is difficult or dangerous and the better world that is possible. Both poems find reasons for song and celebration, even in this in-between place. And perhaps the joy we find amidst the challenges is part of what will bring us closer to the world we dream about.
Ancestors and prophets speak to us through poetry, especially in these times when we need to hear from those who have gone before us and faced great challenges. They teach us not only to go forward one breath at a time, one stanza at a time, but to sustain our minds and souls with enthusiasm for the smallest details and the biggest dreams. Poems can be quite short, and yet their evocative words plant seeds, growing into thoughts and conversations and relationships. Brigit’s holiday is a good time for tapping into the creativity that sustains commitment.
Brigit is a goddess of fire and inspiration as well as clean water, healing, and creativity. Both holy water and sacred flame are her symbols. When we act on it, inspiration is a form of courage. We risk the vulnerability to manifest our hopes, dreams, and visions. Being open to the spark of a new idea can be dangerous. In these times when faithful public servants are facing retaliation for enforcing the law, when there is a widespread hunt to punish those who seek to end bias and discrimination in employment, when major news outlets are submitting to the pressure to repeating the liar’s version of events, we are aware that inspiration that is born from truth and creativity requires courage.
Let’s be refreshed by the holy water of our connection and let us be guided by the sacred flame of truth. The sacred well denotes healing. Everything we do to heal and care for ourselves and each other honors the sacred and is a form of resistance. Brigit’s forge calls us to creativity. Everything we make with our minds, voices, hearts, and hands helps us to imagine a better world, to process our grief and rage, and to connect with others. Creativity simultaneously grounds us and shows us possibility. We must create courageously. When we love our families fiercely, whether families of origin or choice, we honor the generativity of the holy water and the sacred flame. Let us gather the courage to rise up in solidarity with all of our siblings, especially those who are targeted by those who would build their power on a foundation of oppression.
In the cycle of the year in this part of the world, winter is a necessary and natural part of the order. As I said earlier, there are certain seeds that will only sprout in the warmer months if they first experience cold. Without winter, there are insects that overpopulate, and there are native plants and trees that don’t do as well. Winter has its own gifts of beauty, of a change of pace, and of our ability to see the sky. That being said, there are some difficult things about surviving through the winter. Some people find themselves less resilient in the months that have less daylight. While we can appreciate the gifts of winter in their own time, there is also something to look forward to about the spring.
In our human lives, we are living through difficult times. The metaphor of winter for our times is true in the sense of challenge, but without the serenity and natural cycles. The current federal administration is issuing grave threats to human rights, economic justice, world peace, and basic science. I don’t believe that there is anything beautiful or necessary about that. But the spiritual lessons of these February holidays -- the lessons of commitment, creativity, and courage – are useful as we strategize about how to hold on to our values and survive, and how to help as many of our neighbors as possible to do the same.
The world is calling us to be innovative, strong, resilient, and practical. Those are some of the values that are highlighted at Imbolc and Brigit. May we be inspired to shape the future with courage, creativity, and commitment. May we create a meeting place for fire and water, past and future, winter and spring, celebration and potential.
So be it. Blessed be. Amen.

Run BTS: 049 | Eve of Episode 50 Festival part 1
Original Air Date: 17 APR 2018 Episode Length: 23:43 Total Parts: 2 YouTube English Subtitles: Yes Title Song: Blood Sweat & Tears
Synopsis: A summary episode - reliving moments from the past 50 episodes
Production: so...it's exceedingly obvious that they intended this to only be one episode but they spilled it over into the next one. Most of the time that will work but when you're making a big deal about it being the 50th, it doesn't really work. Overall, not the worst execution of a 'clips' ep but i think we'd all agree that we'd rather have original content than watch compiled clips. if I want to watch those moments, I'll go watch the actual eps. It's not that I hate the idea of a bottle show via past content but this one just wasn't executed well. It's really nice to see the ceramics complete from a few episodes before.
Here's a weird editing note: pointing out the prod team didn't know the members were hungry and surprised they were eating. I get that sometimes the food is for show (especially on their livestreams) but why did they feel the need to state it in the subs? It just makes the guys and the prod team look ill-prepared.
Another thing, i know most probably won't notice but when they do cut to clips, it's like they've ripped them straight from the internet instead of the original files. The audio is SO disjointed. To do this properly, they should have grabbed the clips without the music and added new music in the compilation. Also the part where they watch their own clips is too long. Don't get me wrong, i actually enjoy watching BTS react to their own content but that's in the context of a reaction livestream or a Bomb, not as an episode of a variety show. A little hint of it would have been sufficient but it does nothing for the pacing of this episode. Final also, is it just me or is there something off about the translation? The quality just seems more lacking than we're used to.
Endearment: Uh, if my above notes didn't give it away, i think this episode does absolutely nothing for the guys. it's vaguely interesting to me to see what moments they remember from past episodes before the clips are played but I wouldn't call it endearing at all. They're put in this hard spot where they know that the audience is infinitely more knowledgeable about their content than they are but they still have to put on this show. oh, it was nice to hear them talk about what they'd like to do for the future, knowing which actually become episodes
Winner/Loser: none
Best Cheater: none
Member Moments:
RM: RM still remembered the names of the dogs. my heart!
JN: Jin confusing the Santa Run ep with when they filmed Bon Voyage at Santa Village.
YG: Yoongi being iconic for playing along with the question asking how Yoonji is doing now.
JH: Savage Hobi! Jimin complimenting everyone's acting and saying he should act, Hobi hits him with the 'not you'
JM: Way to go Jimin with the guessing...it's almost sus...
V: Tae's adorable squashed pottery as a callback to the squirrel garden.
JK: Im glad JK was enjoying the snacks.
Bonus Content: So much more engaging than the actual episode! absolutely worth the watch. (plus you can see Tae drink through a million straws at the same time...slight exaggeration..)

1805

Duchâtel's New Year's Eve soirée surpassed all the festivities he had given in our house up to that point. For days the entrance, the large salon, the small salon, the music room, the dining room, the winter garden and other rooms had been furnished and decorated for the grand fête. In the afternoon, the buffet was delivered by "Véry" and set up together with a champaigne pyramid. "Frascati" provided an ice bomb (whatever that was!), Bengal lights were lit in the garden, and a fire-eater was to perform there later. As darkness fell, a small violin orchestra was set up in the winter garden. The three young men tuned their violins and immediately began to play a few delightful Italian melodies. Camille was beside herself, humming happily while she did my hair. Our servants also got as much champaigne as they wanted tonight. Camille explained to me what was going on in the souterrain. "We've set up a little dance floor in the kitchen. I hope our good Monsieur Copin will ask me to dance! If not, I'll have a look at the waiters from "Véry". There are some strapping garçons there!" She giggled in good humor. Oh, how much I would have preferred to celebrate with her and the other servants in the kitchen, than to present myself in festive silk, with diamonds in my hair, to the curious glances of the Parisian haute volée! Duchâtel had invited many important, influential people whom I either didn't know at all or only knew by sight. Duchâtel wanted to show off with me, his much younger wife, the lady-in-waiting of Empress Joséphine, as well as the Emperor's possible favorite, the future "enfant chérie" of Parisian society. I did him the favor and played along. But only out of indifference! When the house was already filled with guests, I finally allowed myself to appear. I walked slowly and gracefully down the stairs, smiling graciously, and heard Duchâtel say aloud: "Ah, you see! I am not married to a woman...but to a goddess! Mesdames et Messieurs...my wife!" The guests applauded. I took Duchâtel's arm and together we completed the "honneurs". I was very much welcomed. While the ladies looked at me in a friendly manner but with easily recognizable envy, I was met with admiration from all the gentlemen! Smiling mysteriously I gave nothing away. I revealed nothing to what everyone would have loved to see confirmed - my romantic relationship with the Emperor! I was certainly the most beautiful woman that evening, but I was it because I was enveloped in the aura of Napoléon's secret adoration for me! I hardly made any conversation, I listened attentively to other people's chats and talks, smiled, and turned away politely as soon as I noticed the slightest hint. Hearing his name - and actually everyone was only talking about him!- made me and my sensitive heart uneasy. I had anticipated that it would be difficult for me to hide my state of heart in the company of other people, but I had not expected that it would be so tormenting for me!
Well, I had set myself a time limit for the evening; I wanted to endure the whole thing until eleven o'clock, but not a minute longer! Then my "headache" would release me from the obligation. I wanted to be alone. I longed to be alone, to lie in my bed, my hands between my legs, dreaming of Him. I had told the Emperor that I would be in bed at eleven o'clock, with my hands between my thighs. He had nodded and teased me: "I'll look at the clock...at eleven! On time! But woe betide you...push your fingers in your peach! Adèle...l'm warning you!" I laughed at him. "...the best thing, Sire,...is for you to come over and see what I'm doing!" Of course it was just a joke.
But he never joked! I had almost forgotten that. Shortly before eleven I was already in my bedroom and was just taking off my long gloves, Camille came to me. "Madame, the black fiacre is here!" I looked at her as if I hadn't heard correctly. It was impossible! The Emperor spent the evening with the imperial family. He was also committed to the whole of the New Year's Day: mass, parade, reception of the diplomatic corps, lunch with the imperial family, New Year's concert in the Louvre Salon and in the early evening a few hours with me in bed in the Allée des Veuves! It was impossible that he wanted to see me now, this evening! Impossible!
I tried to disappear into the souterrain without being seen, where Camille had already laid out my cape. Our house was swarming with guests and staff, but most of them were tipsy, so no one wondered to see me in my hooded cape. I asked Camille to accompany me to the fiacre. We left the house through the servants entrance. The carriage was further away than usual because the street was full of guests coaches and carriages. There were also festivities in the neighbour villas; a dozen of coachmen met around fire baskets and drank punch together. Duroc met me in the dark, he held the door open and said quietly to me: "....I had imagined the evening to be different!" I didn't immediately understand why he said that. Warm air and the scent of Éau de Cologne hit me from inside the fiacre. A small lantern glowed. The Emperor sat in the corner. At second glance I saw that he was not wearing his uniform jacked. His grey coat lay half on his shoulders. The Emperor was not sitting either, but was lying lasciviously on the cushions. When he saw me, he held out his hand and cried out in a wailing voice: "Adèle...imagine...there was an arguement...I had to get out of there! I had to escape from the palace...from my own palace!" I didn't answer, I was too surprised by the sight of him, his messy hair and his desperate expression. He grabbed my arm and pulled me close to his side. I hugged him as much as I could. "Sire?" I murmured questioningly. The Emperor let out another wailing sound, grabbed my neck and pulled my face to his. I kissed his cold, wet lips. Duroc stood in the open door of the carriage the whole time. I now understood what he meant by his words. The Emperor opened his mouth and kissed me wildly. He didn't care that Duroc was watching us. I didn't care either! The Grand Marshal and I were part of the imperial private sphere, our relationship had become friendly! This made many things easier, especially for the Emperor.

"I would rather spend the evening with my Adèle...and Duroc...than with...these bandits!" He would not tell anyone what had happened. The Emperor never spoke about these family matters, he never let anything get out of it, but his behavior could not hide how much the whole thing affected him. He sounded not only tormented, but also disappointed and sad. It had often happened that the Emperor had clashed with his siblings, especially at the time of the coronation, and everyone who was at court knew about the difficult relationship between the Emperor and his family. The Empress had told us ladies-in-waiting that the Bonapartes never had harmonious family meetings, there were always arguments, disagreements, quarrels, outbursts of anger and tears. The Emperor suffered greatly because of this!
I looked at him tenderly. "My poor darling..." then I looked at Duroc. "...how long can the Emperor stay?" The Grand Marshal answered quite emotionless: "Half an hour, at most!" My gaze went back to my suffering Emperor and I asked carefully and with my sweetest voice: "Shall we let have the Grand Marshal a glass of champaigne, Sire? The New Year is just around the corner!" I wanted to distract him from his grief. I used a method that a mother uses with her beloved child. And it worked, for a moment. The Emperor looked at me uncertainly, a tear ran down his cheek. "Yes?" He pouted. "...can I have a glass too...maybe it'll do me good!" I asked Camille, who was still standing outside, to bring us a bottle of champaigne and glasses. "...and Camille, tell the coachman to go and have a punch!" The Emperor looked at me in the dim light of the lamp, he caressed my breasts unashamed, felt my hard thimbles through the satin silk. Then he said reproachfully to Duroc: "...she takes care of everyone! Adèle has a heart of gold! But I am only surrounded by envy and resentment. Why are they doing this to me? Am I not the benefactor of all? Why this ingratitude?" His face was contorted with pain, he was sobbing loudly and tears were streaming down his face. I had never seen him cry before. I was deeply shocked and put my hand on his cheek. I wanted desperately to comfort him! Duroc was not capable of that. Only I was! Now I used a method necessary to comfort a grown man playing the little boy. My thumb brushed over his lips, then slipped into his mouth. I gently pushed his jaws apart, like he always did to me, and pushed my tongue deep into his mouth. He sighed weakly, whiningly. Although I felt infinitely sorry for him, it was heavenly to see him so powerless like that. "Darling,...please... don't cry! My sweet darling...I'm with you!" I never thought I would ever say something like that to him: "My sweet boy...I would love to take you to my bed right now where I can protect you...my little darling!" Maybe my words sounded too seductive, but I would have really really! liked to have him in my bed in this condition! He sighed again and moaned: "I have to go back to the palace...I don't want to! I want to stay with you...my sweet girl! God, you are so beautiful...Adèle!" His eyes glittered. I was still stroking his face. I leaned close to him, whispered sweet things to him, he sobbed again. Finally Camille came with the champaigne! Duroc took the bottle, I held the glasses and let him pour. I held the Emperor's glass, he had finally stopped crying and blows his nose loudly into his handkerchief. Then he picked up his glass. "Your Excellency, I would like to thank you for bringing the Emperor to me! He needs comfort, understanding and compassion, which I can give him! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to comfort the Emperor!"
Duroc, the Emperor and myself were not a little surprised by my solemn words. But I think the three of us felt better after I said that. However, I had saved the situation. The Grand Marshal bowed and said: "It is an honour, Madame!" Then Duroc gave the Emperor and me five minutes alone. We drank our champaigne in one go, I took his glass from his hand and put it on the floor of the carriage. Then I took my suffering Emperor, my little boy, in my arms. We licked our faces, kissed each other passionately, painfully, and chattered eagerly: "Are you going to bed now?" - "Yes!" - "...and your hands? Then where are your hands?" - "Where your hands should be!" - "Will I see you at the parade tomorrow?" - "Yes! I promised Tanguy to take him to the parade." - "I will see you, Adèle...and tell you that I love you! In front of the whole world!" - "I will do the same, my love!" - "...and tomorrow evening...in the Allée des Veuves, my sweet? Yes...yes?" - "Yeeesss!" We kissed uninhibitedly once more. He sobbed, still tearful, and it broke my heart! Then I pushed him away gently and jumped out of the fiacre. In front of the carriage, Camille had been having a nice conversation with Duroc, even laughing together. I was reluctant to interrupt them. "Your Excellency, take the Emperor back to the palace now! I would like to speak to you about him at the next opportunity! I beg you...!" I didn't wait for his answer, but grabbed Camille's hand and pulled her with me to our house. My heart was pounding!

The next morning, January 1. 1805, I awoke with a feeling of anxiety. I immediately remembered the nervous crisis that the Emperor had suffered that evening. Would I see the Emperor later, recovered and healthy, on the military parade? Or would terrible news await us from the palace? I was overcome by a tormenting fear. But I didn't let it show. My children, especially Tanguy, were looking forward to the parade. Of course, my little Napoléon had to be there too. He wore a little white fur suit that made him look like a little ice bear. So cute! Duchâtel sent his excuses; he had been playing "Pharaoh" until five in the morning and intended to sleep the morning away. But Moira unexpectedly came to visit! She had celebrated the New Year's Eve in Paris and took the opportunity to visit me. I was very happy, but didn't mention anything about my experience with the Emperor the day before. There was a possibility that Joseph had been involved in the argument, in which case Moira would certainly want to defend himself and perhaps say something nasty that I didn't want to hear. She always protected Joseph from the Emperor. After all, she loved him!
We had breakfast together and Moira gave me a small New Year's present, a book by Madame de Genlis. "Read it, Adèle,...it's about the love story of Louise de La Vallière and King Louis XIV. You'll be interested!" I must have look doubtfully at Moira, who said: "...even if you know the story, read it anyway!" I thanked her and put the book aside. Then I asked Moira if she would accompany me to the parade with the children. I was afraid that the Emperor might have to cancel the parade for health reasons. I didn't know how I would react, but it would be better to have Moira there, because of the children. She agreed and was especially looking forward to seeing my new promenade costume. It was an apricot-colored velvet dress with a short pelerine, trimmed with darkgray fur, and on my head I wore a darkgrey fur toque. "Oh yes, it's just right for the fashion magazines! And next week all of Paris will be wearing it!" Moira always managed to cheer me up! We packed the children into the carriage and Monsieur Copin took us to the Tuileries Garden on that cold sunny January day. As we approached the Place de la Concorde via the Champs Élysée and I heard the hubbub of a crowd of people, a weight was lifted from my heart! The parade in the Tuileries Garden was taking place, the Emperor would appear! We got out of the carriage, Moira holding Tanguy's hand, I carrying my little Napoléon and Camille was instructed to buy a candy cane for Tanguy from a vendor. As a member of the imperial court, we were allowed to sit in the stands. We stayed in the bottom row, however, because Tanguy wanted to see the Emperor's Mameluke up close. The good Parisians turned up in large numbers, dressed in their Sunday best, braving the cold wind and applauding the jagged marching music! It was a wonderful atmosphere. Moira suddenly looked at me, beaming. "There's Joseph, with his daughter Zenaïde!" I looked over to the imperial stand, which was empty except for Prince Joseph and his daughter. The Emperor once said that he would gladly do without his family at the parades rather than see only "yawning faces". The main attraction of this parade was the Imperial Guard. There were only a few regiments in the city, so it would only be a short spectacle. But what an exciting splendor the spectators were treated to! In the most magnificent uniforms, with shining sabres and armors, leopard-skin-trimmed saddles, and golden helmets that shone in the sun, the dragoons galloped past us. A group of young girls screamed with delight as the proud, death-defying men rode past them. Two military orchestras played the same march and a tambour major shouted orders. Since the coronation, a tall wooden triumphal arch stood in the square of the entrance to the Tuileries Garden. The Emperor had told me that he wanted to have a stone triumphal arch built there. The Emperor wanted triumphal arches to be built everywhere in Paris, including a very high one, that visitors could use as an observation tower. The Emperor wanted to make Paris the most beautiful city in the world - the center of the universe!

The orchestras were now playing the "Chant du Départ" and I knew that my center of the universe was about to appear! And then he came! The Emperor rode through the gate of the triumphal arch on his white Arabian horse and the people cheered! I held my little Napoléon tightly in my arms and stood up. "Vive l'Empereur" shouted hundreds of voices around us. I shouted it too, close to tears of joy. I had a good look at the Emperor, his face was iron, his lips pressed together, deadly serious, as if petrified. He reined in his horse, stopped, had the regiments parade, and saluted them in silence. I held my little son tenderly and said quietly: "The Emperor will make your Maman a sibling for you this year...do you like that?" My little one giggled as if he understood. The Emperor once said: "Nothing would make a young woman look more beautiful than a little boy in her arms!" Well, there I stood with my little boy in my arms and hoped that the Emperor would see me! He saw me!!
Napoléon, who always wanted to demonstrate that he was a sovereign close to the people, rode past the rows of visitors, greeting his Parisians, his beloved French people. He finally stopped in front of our stand, his bright eyes found me immediately. Tanguy called out: "...mon Empereur...mon Empereur!" and swung his candy cane like a sword. I went up to the Emperor's horse and handed him my little Napoléon. The Emperor took my child and held him in his arm. He turned his horse and showed my son to the audience. The crowd cheered again and even louder! It was just a gesture...but I burst into tears! The Emperor smiled as he gave me the little one back. "I think his diapers are full!" he said. I beamed at him with teary eyes and took my son. This was the moment when the great Napoléon told me in front of the whole world that he loved me! And of course, there would be talk again; not only my elegant promenade costume, but also this award given to Madame Duchâtel's son would be read in all the society papers tomorrow. As long as it was just that....
Moira's stern look reminded me of the truth. "The resemblance between your two Napoléons is truly striking!" She picked up Tanguy and together we walked back to our carriage. "Was he the Italian actor that night, Adèle? Was it Bonaparte?" Moira stopped and looked at me intently. Camille also looked at me. "No!" I said quietly. "...stop it, Moira, please don't ruin my day!" We continued walking. "You have to tell him, Adèle. He has a right to know...that he has a son!" Moira did not let go. "Stop it," I said again. When we reached the carriage Moira did not get in. She gave Tanguy and the little boy a kiss. "Think carefully about what you are doing, Adèle. Remember that you are not only lying to yourself, but to him and to all of France!" She kissed me goodbye too. Then she disappeared into the crowd.
The evening came quickly. I could hardly wait to get into the fiacre. My body was shaking from a nervous heat. When I finally arrived at Allée des Veuves, I ran into our house. The candles were burning, warmth pouring from the fireplace. I took off my coat, took off my bonnet, thought for a moment and then took off my panthalons. Just in time, because the front door opened and the Emperor entered. I sank into a deep curtsy. "Sire, please forgive me for the thoughtlessness with which I spoke to you yesterday. I wanted to comfort you...but in doing so I forgot who I am...!" The Emperor came towards me, threw off his hat and cloak, grabbed my arm and pulled me up. He didn't say a word. We kissed almost weak because of our immense desire and it would have been sensible to go to the bedroom. But the way upstairs was just too long and so we only got as far as the staircase. I knew that I would have bruises on my back the next day, because the steps were very hard, but the Emperor's liberating cry of lust and his happy, ecstatic face afterwards were worth it! "Will your sweet boy now get his New Year's gift?" He helped me to stand up. "Yes! Come..." I took his hand and led him into the small salon that was to become his library. The room was dark, however, so I took a candelabra with me. The Emperor followed me, standing next to me as I placed the candles on the desk. Right next to the little dancer.

I watched his face. He looked at the small porcelain figurine with interest, a smile curved his lips. "Is that you, Adèle? It's gorgeous!" His eyes shone with delight. I was very happy! "It's Italian Rococo, when the artist created this figure, I wasn't already born, Sire!" The Emperor looked at the figure closely. "...but he must have known that you and your peach would exist one day! Can you stand like this...?" He had hardly said it when I took off my dress and my bodice. When I was standing next to him in just my stockings, I lifted my leg. "I'm a dancer, Sire!" He looked at me, then at the figure, then at me again. He pushed his jaw out lasciviously for a moment, his cheek muscles moving. "How long can you hold out?" he then asked. I bent my head back slightly, opened my wet lips, smiled: "How long can you hold out, Sire?"
