Super Meat Boy, Mega-Man, and Super Mario Brothers. Classic platformers, solid inspiration. Will Super Red-Hot Hero be next?
Super Red-Hot Hero is a 2D platformer being Kickstarted by Strangelight Games. It focuses on recreating the challenging experiences introduced to us through platforming classics such as Super Mario Brothers and Mega Man. Instead of just copying and pasting these ideas, Strangelight intends to innovate upon them by bringing in new mechanics to breathe life into the standard ones.
In this video, I go over my thoughts on my short time with Super Red-Hot Hero.

Ba2b- Final touch ups
Something about the shadow of the character bothered me, I think it was the fact all the other shapes had hard lines to their shadows. I very quickly threw together a few frames for a shadow to match the art style. It was such a simple thing but it really helped bring things together.

We all got together on the Tuesday to decide on how we wanted our post processing to look, we also started adding in the facades. We all agreed the facades made the game feel more complete, giving them a slight glowing effect gave atmosphere.  We wanted the cave to have a nostalgic and mysterious feel, I suggested a slight blurred edge as often seen in old video, animations and photographs. We couldn’t figure out a way to do this in the time we had, but we all agreed that a Vignetting asds the same feelings. Becca walked us all through how the post processing works and what each thing does.
Becca needed me to create a texture to hide the seams the ball-cube. They’d made a smokey material in UE4 which we all agreed on for the ball design. I created two different versions so the ball could have more signifiers depending on which room it would be used in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also created the texture for the doors in our game. As we’re relatively simple design wise It wasn’t too hard to create the door.
Tumblr media
Seeing everything come together art wise, with cracks, post processing, and facades really brings our the atmosphere of the game.

The Travelling Hand is a coop multi-narrative investigation that traces a specific archaeological and historical event across various geographical zones over the course of about four centuries. Found in Old Goa and central to the investigation are the remains of the hand of Queen Ketevan of Georgia, around which a wave of transhistorical events got mobilized, The narratives unravel a ludic journey, encountering an assemblage of oral discourses, state records, scientific tests, found footage, immersive sound that connect people and stories across Georgia, Persia,Portugal, Germany and India collected and made by the artist. The multi-media game installation has an analogue board and a custom-made digital console that opens up film molecules projected on a surface. Film molecules are fragmented biological recordings that have decayed from the decaying hand or relic. The player/s must excavate for time, memory and stone and resurrect ruins which are submerged in the giant mangroves on the shape-shifting island of Old Goa. Each play through reveals a new story thread, opening up a complex political and historical narratives emerging through chance and friendships. The search becomes playful revealing the possibility of a 'presence'; furthering the interrogation of the self and the place. This is the true story of a ghost, the residue that takes effect on the space it inhabits. Despite so many traceable and decisive acts, the central element (of the hand) is so outlandishly displaced. Gayatri chose the medium of game because the sense of discovery, the rhizome like, non linear structure to emergent historical narratives fit perfectly. The work explores dissonance, displacement, superimposition, the actual and cruel, the decolonial, the mystical and eery.

When Indie developer Tale Of Tales announced that it would be closing its virtual doors, it sounded fairly permanent: "We really did our best with Sunset, our very best. And we failed." Founders Michaël Samyn and Auriea Harvey certainly weren't mincing words this previous June, which is understandable. It's difficult to be optimistic about the future when [...]

Figured I start of this blog with a response to an article that is responding to another article and kind of go over how I personally feel about the points and ideas of the author.  Having read Roger Ebert's article on why games aren't considered Art, I am already aware as to what Grant Travinor, the responding author, is talking about. In summary, Roger Ebert's article discussed his opinions over why games aren't to be considered Art and how no game, as of yet, can be cited on the same level as that of poets, sculptors, etc. I personally find this rather astounding. When it comes down to games that are mainly seen in the public eye, and often for the worst reasons (Gran Theft Auto for example), they wouldn't be considered forms of "Art" but they can definitely be called "art".
The distinction between Art, big A, and art, little a, and how I'm using them in this post is actually a small discussion within itself. When I'm saying Art, I mean society's accepted and approved art that is often of a "higher class" or used for philosophical / emotional discussion as to what they portray. Whereas art, in my opinion, is a work that somebody has created that can initiate feelings or thoughts of some sort to the viewer.
In my opinion, there are games that could absolutely be considered Art. However a great deal of them are just art. An Art example being more provocative games such as Journey or Flower, art examples being games more along the lines of Call of Duty (which, depending by game, may have story elements or scenes that could be considered Art to different people) or Super Mario. In many ways video games being seen as Art vs art is really a matter of perspective and taste. But isn't that how the categories of Art are already seen? What is it that makes Super Mario 1000x less Art-sy compared to Final Fantasy (IMHO)? Is it the more detailed graphics? The clichéd but provoking stories? Or is it something completely different, who's to say that because I feel Final Fantasy is really pretty damn Art-sy that someone else can't disagree and say that Minecraft is on a completely different level in comparison? People's personal tastes affect how they react and absorb a game. In just the same manner that different people have different reactions to Art.
In a summary rounding up a bit about some of these thoughts, I wanted to call out to the article above. Towards the beginning, Travinor says, "Of course, many people see the debate as entirely pointless, and there is the separate question of why we should want to establish that video games are art". I would like to question how legitimate it truly is of gamers and game designs to debate on the topic. Is it pointless? Maybe so. Things change over the course of time, and I feel that not everybody is ready for Art to become a digital experience that one physically becomes absorbed into. At some point, they very well may and the technology may make it easier so that many people may have the same experience out of a game that everybody else does. However as games are at the moment they are a very spread out genre of art that hasn't yet reached a steady rise to the name of Art. Games have mounted the steps of what may be ten flights of stairs, while many people were expecting there to be an elevator.

When doing this seemingly simple task I found myself noticing some things. 1st of all, I really like puzzle games. 2nd Most of these games are hard to categorise sections. Example, I put Pokemon, Don't Starve, and Animal Crossing in the 'Alea' section as games relying on chance. Upon further thought I realised those instances of chance have been coded into the game, they are accounted for and balanced out in other areas of the game. The games in 'Mimicry' are there because they are based on mimicking aspects of real life but they don't strictly stick to reality. Life is Strange features time travelling elements; Animal crossing has talking animals. Games seem to be more complex than this grid allows for.

The Sublime Spaces in MMOs
I have a thing for pictures of abandoned things. I follow the /r/abandonedporn subreddit, and various tumblrs that are dedicated to the empty spaces and places that have been left behind by humanity. These pictures show wear, decay, neglect, the passing of time and the fleeting fancies of human beings (such as the abandoned driveway that will show up in this feed shortly.)
My play in Warcraft is always dominated by this feeling of space, because I have always played on low population servers. However, even though I have transferred to the busiest RP server in Warcraft, I am always alone while wandering through the early zones of Mists of Pandaria. Perhaps I do not frequent those parts of Pandaria that give level 90s a reason to revisit, but as I climb Kun-Lai Summit, I think of the depths of Vash'jir, and the loneliness of Icecrown. Icecrown and Grizzly Hills were bleak the second time I levelled through them, for all the people on my realm were already raiding Trial of the Crusader at that time. Now they must feel desolate.
And that feeling of space, that beauty of the abandoned, of the ugly things that wander and rage, forever entrapped by their AI, wandering through a landscape that is bereft of people to enjoy them? Is that the sublime? Are these empty digital lands the closest that a game can come to the truly sublime? The wolves that endlessly kill the same herd animals over and over again, enacting a cycle of simulated death for the enjoyment, the immersion of players that will never pass through again.
Is it really flight, or lack there of, that makes a world feel big? No, I don't think so. Restricting or opening up are two sides of the same coin. What makes a world feel big is scale, and corners to be found (whether on foot or by flight), the idea that the world in it's entirety is unknowable by a single person. That there is more to it than we can explore. Restricting us to foot makes it about what we can explore on foot, but one really need enough breadth of spaces to still make the game feel big. As for flight - the same applies. The Storm Peak are large, dark, and full of terrors masked in a coat of snow, and they felt huge when I was flapping around them on my Proto-drake. Kun-Lai summit has treacherous mountain paths and stormy weather that pushes back at us, the environment is a true presence in this zone, because it also feels (to me) bereft and bleak. It's at a very late stage of the game, and I only see players in that rare gap between one phase and the next.
So I'm in a landscape populated by the ghostly echoes of other players, traversing a land that to everyone else was filled with people when they trod these paths. The difference between these abandoned spaces of the real world, is that the neglect, the decay, only appears at the literal hand of God - when time moves on in that zone.

The first post
Hello tumblr world! I hoping to start this blog as a place to discuss video games as a medium for Art, with a capital A. I decided to try my hand at blogging when I looked for blogs/websites that discussed games as art, but couldn't find any! My current plan to play one game that is often cited as art (usually on Wikipedia, reddit, etc.) a week and then write up my feelings on the game. I plan on calling this section "Is it Art?" and the first one should be up in a couple of days!
Here is the short list of games I'm thinking of playing:
Okami (what I'm playing now!)
Shadow of the Colossus
Journey
Flower
Portal
Hotline Miami
Psychonauts
Spec Ops: The Line
If anyone is actually reading this, please let me know if you'd be interested in this kind of stuff!
