1. Tell me your first memory of Graphic Design/ Animation 

(RR)  I have memories with both mediums so I will share them both. The first memory of graphic design I have was seeing my brother create designs on photoshop Cs2. My first memory of animation has always been Saturday morning cartoons. 

2, Can you recall an early memorable local graphic design moment

(RR) I remember in primary school I placed third in a TSTT nation wide graphic design competition. 

3. What made you chose Animation as a profession

 (RR) I use to do graphic design early on but now I am a Story artist for animation and personal mentor for young artist. 

4. What have been some of your expectations and the reality of working in the field

 (RR) Both my brother and sister did graphic design before I did so I knew what the market place for that looked like.  I never did work for a company. I only did some freelance work. I never had big expectation because graphic design is something I knew I did not want to do long term.

5. What do you wish you were told about working in the field

 (RR)  Probably how to deal with clients effectively and not being taken advantage of and saying No more often.

6. What sort of  future do you see for yourself in animation

(RR) Writing and directing my own animated feature films 

7. What are the best projects and worst you have ever worked on

(RR)The best projects I have worked on are my personal projects, my comics especially. The worst would be any client work.

Highlighting student work: Salisha Gunness

~Galleryyuhself ~ Salisha Gunness, The University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago is a year two BAs in Visual Arts Design student.

She tells Galleryyuhself about her project

After looking through our daily newspapers,  I decided that I wanted to redesign Solo’s current Coconut Flavoured Water advertisement which is located in the front page of our local newspaper for a school project. While doing research on art movements I became interested in pop art and I decided to use pop art characteristics to redesign this advertisement.

Pop art is a movement (1955 - 1970) and it is a style that is based on simple, bold images of everyday items to create designs. The pop art movement aimed to solidify the idea that art can draw from any source and there is no hierarchy of culture to disrupt this. It is easily recognizable due to its vibrancy and unique characteristics that are present in many of the most iconic works of the movement. Some of the characteristics of pop art are recognizable imagery, bright primary colours, innovative techniques, mixed media and collage. I became inspired by famous pop artists where I did a sketch and I used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to design the advertisement for my project.

By contrast their advertising for the Caribbean seems like a complete afterthought from choices of type styles to thrown together photography and photoshopping. Is it possible that advertising in the Caribbean is still hedged in the belief that audiences are simple and unaware of aesthetics? Discuss...

GalleryYuhself~OPINIONS: Why do we use colour in such an unnatural way? Why do we Photoshop so much and why do we have to imitate advertising from a decade ago in America? Can anyone tell me?
